  • Dive into the world of automotive enhancements with our detailed guide on installing a stage 3 coil conversion kit on your vehicle. Join us in the Metal Tech 4x4 shop as we walk you through each step, from removing the wheels to adjusting the suspension, ensuring your ride gets the upgrade it deserves.
    We invented the Coil Conversion Kit years ago, allowing individuals to replace their air bag suspension on GX470 and GX460 with coil springs. Through the addition of coil spring suspension you achieve a smoother ride while eliminating the air bag suspension which is prone to failure.
    Air bag suspension tends to leak over time, especially with heavy use. With Metal Tech 4x4's Coil Conversion Kit you get more reliability with your suspension while also adding the ability to further customize your rig. We offer this kit in 3 separate packages so you can choose what components you would like. View our kits below

    Question what retains the top of the spring to the frame

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před měsícem

      Gravity! Yup, it's the compression of the weight of the truck that keeps them in. When fully extended suspension-wise, the shocks stop the suspension from opening to the point where the springs fall out. The springs always have some pre-load on them that keeps them in place. Simple and works!

  • @thedetroiters

    Great videos - keep them going - especially the GX470 content!
    I have the opposite issue here. My previous owner removed the OEM airbags and I now need to re-install them - plus add a 2-3" suspension lift. Any advice / videos on that scenario?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 7 měsíci

      Reversing an airbag delete really depends on how the person did the delete. Did they carefully disconnect the airbag airlines or cut them? Did they leave the air compressor in the truck? Did they use a bolt-in kit or weld spacers onto the axle? There are several variables, and it is best to have a mechanic look at it if you are not sure how or what they did to install the coil springs. There may be more than just unbolting and pulling the coil springs.

      @@Metaltech4x4 Thanks guys - I still have the compressor but all the lines from the compressor to the springs were cut and zip-tied. They only pulled the fuse for the air ride to disable it, everything else still in tact.
      My main question was about maintaining some type of air springs with factory controls - but also adding a suspension lift. Do I need different air bags (taller)?, what about the leveling sensors? Just looking for any detailed install of a suspension lift that also retains some type of air springs / oem or not. Because that's what I am looking to do - thanks

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 3 měsíci

      The compressor can stay where it's at; no need to remove it once the air system is disabled. It is located up in the driver's side off the frame, tucked just outside the wheel well in the quarter panel. No real gain in removing it. It is not a usable space and does not create any issues when not in use. And no, it's not strong enough to air tires up.

    Can someone clarify or direct me to install instructions for KDSS models? Without visually seeing the process on KDSS, the brief verbal instruction at 3:58 was unclear to me : "if you have KDSS you're not going to disconnect the sway bar. You're going to put the KDSS in bypass". Further explanation, or preferably demonstration is needed for the laymen.

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 11 měsíci +1

      We do not currently have a truck with KDSS to show this process, but here is an explanation.
      KDSS trucks have the bypass on the driver's side of the frame bolted to the outside of the frame. Find the black steel shield protecting the KDSS pump, it's also where all the hydraulic lines go in behind. Remove the shield, exposing the pump. At the back of the pump you will see two 10mm hex head bolts pointed outward. These are the bypass valves. Open them up 1.5 to 2.0 turns but not all the way out. The system is now in bypass and you can freely move the KDSS rams with some effort. Once the suspension is installed put the truck on the ground at the new ride height, then close the valves. This will set the new ride hight into the KDSS system.

    Great video, thank you. Are the adjustable shock controls maintained AND the dash error light overridden by removing the two fuses pulled in the video? Or just one - or neither?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před rokem +1

      To have the truck no longer look for or power the air suspension system you just pull the one relay and the one fuse under the hood. If you removed the adjustable shocks, even just one you will get the flashing error in the center of your dash. This is common when we lift the truck and remove all 4 shocks! To have the truck forget about the adjustable shocks you pull a single fuse inside the truck. This is the 20A TEMS fuse. If you go to our website we have the printed instructions with color photos showing this exact fuse. www.metaltech4x4.com

    Purchase this kit for my GX470, one question is when installing the puck I did not see you use washers when using the nylon nut? My kit came with two wahsers for each puck, is it neccessary that we use the washers? I decided to go with a regualr bolt so I could use a regualar 19 mm wrench to screw the bolt tight on top of the puck, I was not having any luck finding an allen wrench to tighten the recessed bolt that came with the kit. I had no prblem puting in the springs because I put the springs in first, then the puck and raised the axle on either end to get the lift that I needed to put each spring in. Thanks

      @Metaltech4x4  Před 9 měsíci

      We recently started to include the washers again. However, it works fine w/o. We omitted them for a while since most people were leaving them off due to not wanting to tuck them in during the installation, it can be a tight space. Thank you for running Metal-tech 4x4 parts!

    Quick question. I bought this kit a few years ago and the lower isolator was designed a little differently back then. Since you've redesigned the lower isolator, has the spring ratio changed, or are they the exact same springs from the old stock conversion kit?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The 2.0 CNC machined spring isolator at the axle will not affect the spring ratio. You can run the same stock replacement rear springs. Depending how far back you got the stock rear springs if from us, we updated those to the "Supper stock" by adding a 5% added rate to them to support a little more weight. Same height, just a slightly higher rate spring. To see if you have the Supper stock springs, the model number on them is MT-4010S. metaltech4x4.com/metal-tech-2003-09-lexus-gx470-rear-springs-stock-height-ct/

    Is a 4-post lift required to perform the conversion? My mobile mechanic was wondering if he could do it for me without a lift.

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 6 měsíci +1

      No auto lift is required. Just some good jack stands and a floor jack is all you need. Using a floor jack ift the truck by the rear differential. Once the tires are off the ground, put jack stands under the frame, lower the frame onto the jackstands but keep the tires off the ground. Next take the tires off, now follow the instructions from here as the floor jack will keep the suspension compressed for you to disconnect the sway bar and shocks, then lower the jack to lower the axle allowing the shocks and swaybar to come free of the frame and the stock airbags to extend to be removed.

    Hi buddy, isn't ECU give any alarm if you removed AIR SUS fuses ? as there will be no communication between MAIN ECU and SUS ECU ?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Před 6 měsíci

      Fortunately, the airbag system was never originally designed for the Prado 120. It was the GX470 variant that Toyota/Lexus decided to add it to. Therefore, it's a stand-alone system, not an integrated system. (Like in the GX460). Since it's not integrated once you disable the airbag fuse, taking power from that system, it just turns off in a GX470 or 4th Gen 4 Runner. As opposed to the GX460, where it is integrated, you can't simply unplug it, and the truck forgets about it. In the 460, the main ECU looks for information from the airbag system. This is why, in the GX460, you leave everything plugged in and adjust the rear sensors as needed.

      When you remove the OEM Lexus electric shocks/struts, even one, you will usually get a warning light on the dash for SUS. Following our instructions for the airbag relay then the fuses under the dash will take care of this at the time of an airbag swap.
