Confession. I thought Dirk back in the day looked like a Backstreet Boys and Nsync fill in with that haircut, and he would have a hard time being half the player Detlef was. Well, glad that I'm wrong, as both had long careers, and Dirk ended up being as of now 6th in points.
I wanted Dirk to be a Bear, as it meant that he'd stick it to that school. Had he not been drafted early, he would've been a Wildcat and been teammates with players such Mr. Tayshaun Prince, Scott Padgett and Jamaal Magloire. Oh well.
Wait. As a youngster, he had crushes on Lil' Kim and Foxy? The part Filipina rapper? Yo!

I wrote him in the Summer of 2001 and that October 10th, 2001 one day before school a White envelope with green stripes showed up and it was Dirk posting up in a Autographed picture, signed by him.. two weeks before my birthday.. That was one of the greatest gifts ever. He played a big role in this kid from Cleveland's love for the game, being able to impact the game while being unorthodox was truly groundbreaking and changed the game. Same, so many people were excited for lebron to smack the mavs but when we won, it was something special fr
I talk about that exact “feeling” every time the 2011 Mavs got brought up. Truly something special
It's a shame that area is so obsessed with the Cowboys. I really thought, when I moved there in 2014, that there would be more hype and loyalty towards the Mavs.
I'm from Dallas but I was a student at University of Texas at Austin. Game 6. I made sure to drive my happy ass up here to be in my city when they won lol. I love how Dirk brought up that the one legged shot didn't come to the second half of his career. People try to relegate him to just that shot alone and he was way more than that. He gave your favorite power forward nightmares. His first 10 years he was a slightly slower KD and had some decent athleticism to him believe it or not. He played so many years it's almost like he had two careers. My GOAT FOREVER!!!!!
One of the greatest PF of all time ☝🏾
3rd best
Timmy KG Dirk 😊
2011 mavs title team the best championship run/team I ever watched. So many deserving HOF or former all stars on that roster who got a ring. I remember in that playoff run they'd be down 10-15 points with 6 minutes to go in the 4th vs OKC and Miami and somehow every single possession would go the way they needed offensively and defensively for them to be able to win. OKC had Durant Westbrook and Harden at the time. They were also the first team to sweep Phil Jackson in the playoffs stopping the Lakers and Kobe at their chance at a 3 peat. After that you knew it was destiny for the Mavericks and the torch being passed to Dirk and the team to finally get their long over due ring. The playoff run had the story line of Dirk's whole career being known as a choker due to his past failures in the playoffs to becoming one of the greatest closers of all time. That Mavs team was also the first team in NBA history to go down twice in the NBA finals at 1-0 than down 2-1 and comeback and win it all, against arguably the greatest player of all time and arguably the second greatest SG of all time. When they lost game 1 the Miami Heat looked like the Monstars from space jam dunking all over the Mavs who were always known as having soft defense, so Rick Carlisle switched to a zone defense which proved to be vital in closing off the paint with a DPOY winner Tyson Chandler while also exposing Lebron in the clutch for having no bag except putting his head down and charging to the hoop. Dirk had also lost to this same exact team in the finals in 2006 when the Mavericks were up 2-0 in the series so they already had a history. Down 1-0 in Game 2 of the 2011 NBA finals the Mavs found themselves down 15 points with 7 mins to play in the 4th quarter about to go down 2-0 in the series while also going down that same choker path that always plagued them. The Mavericks then had one of the greatest comebacks in NBA finals history erasing that 15 point lead with 7 minutes to play and won the game on a Dirk Nowitzki layup to tie it 1-1. They lost Game 3 going down 2-1 in the series and in game 4 were trailing in the 4th quarter once again, but the Mavericks rallied a 21-9 run over the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter to win 86-83. Dirk also hit the shot with 14 seconds left in this game as well. The rest is history, the Miami Heat pretty depleted after blowing those huge 4th quarter leads while Lebron's clutch abilities getting exposed in the process combined with Dirk putting together one of the greatest NBA finals performances since Michael Jordan led the Mavericks and the HOFer to their first title in franchise history. One of the most deserving championships of all time and I don't know how anything could top it. The story of dirk's career is amazing, it's almost like he failed so much that nothing could effect him anymore and he became invincible. It was a transition period in the league where the Lakers finally fell off and Lebron had not won a title yet, so these other HOF and former All star players had a chance to finally get their ring. The team also had Jason Kidd, jason Terry, Peja, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler, Caron Butler as former All Stars who all were way more experienced than their competition.
yea i agree Lebron doesnt have a bag. He just rhinosaurus barrels to the basket like the rhino from donkey kong country muscling through like a "freight train" like they call him or he just shoots a long bomb three & drains it. Other than that I cant think of anything else he does.
Exactly - that Mavs team was absolutely loaded. When Caron Butler was healthy even the second team was starting caliber. For example, Brendan Haywood was the Mavs starter for a few years after Tyson left and he was Tyson's backup on that title team. Peja was pretty much broken down at that point but most of the rest of the guys were just a little bit past their respective primes yet still very effective.
Look at Dirk man, so inspirational

I remember the feeling before game 1 against the Lakers. They always got the best of us when it mattered. I couldnt face going into work and hear it from all the Laker fans. That playoffs was surreal. So many games we trailed in those playoffs, supposed to loose and Dirk would just find a way to score in those closing minuets.
You just hit it with „surreal“. I totally agree and feel the same about that run.
I love Dirk man. So much respect for him. 💯
I’m a spurs fan through and through, and will never have a bad thing to say about this legend! The most un-guard-able shot in nba history right next to Kareem’s!
He stayed with the mavs even his salary was cut
Legend
Dirk is a Legend! What a time to be a fan of basketball those 2000's teams and rivalries were so much fun to watch. I was and still am a kobe fan but getting to watch dirk and the mavs. Tim and the spurs. The suns. A.i. with the sixers. Tmac with orlando and Houston. Vince with the raptors! Man i know im missing some but what a time!
My favorite player of all time. He’s the reason I got into Basketball. That team with him, Nash and Finley was great. I wished Nash would have stayed when he was playing at an MVP level. None the less true legend of the game.
My fav player of all time! It’s about time my boy get some love. He made me fall in love with the game of basketball 🏀
Man, congrats for this podcast from Portugal. You guys do an amazing job. It's one of my favourite shows for some time. Hats off to you guys, really... Great stuff. Wish you guys the best, you deserve it.
Legendary interview. Loved listening to him walk through his career
You realize how respected you are in the league when teams put a target on your back when they play you. That was Dirk. Dude was a straight killer on the court and had balls...As a lifelong Laker fan I would watch Dallas just because of Dirk. The first 7+ player shooting 3's and a nice mid-range that you respected, and a player you knew was taking that last shot to win the game. Matt & Cap J, keep doing your thang, this was another outstanding episode.
dirk imo is the best shooting big man ever. he changed the game and he needs to be in the texas hall of fame
Finally y’all got The Tall Baller from the G on here! Y’all still gotta get Duncan, Ray Allen, Ben Wallace, BRoy, S. Francis, & The Matrix on the podcast!
Have they had arrest on? That would be good too.
1 trick pony. 20 years and barely "won" 1 finals against Miami Heat big 3 and 12 minimum salary guys/injured role players.
@@Phoenix-nl2utArtest? Yeah
@@January6thugsyou are a poor man.
@@January6thugs thankfully everyone ignored your dumb comment.
I didn’t like Dirk when he came into the league. I loved old school, big man, back to the basket basketball and his game drove me nuts. I grew to enjoy his style and him as a man. Definition of class and being humble.
HE AND NASH .. THE REASONS WHY I WATCH NBA... WOKE UP IN EARLY MORNING ON THE WEEKEND JUST TO WATCH THE DUO PLAY
This show be having non stop bangers! :…Y’all work too hard! ….thank you guys!
Matt and stak as a dallas guy I appreciate you guys having dirk on yall show it was really good
First of all, I love the show. I've watched all 3 of your careers. I went to Muncie Central HS, graduated and grew up with Bonzi Wells, ask him. I went to Germany in 1994 and moved back to America in 2023. I LOVE Dirk, I've lived in Germany more years than I've lived in America. I was so happy when Germany won the World Championships. But USA is about to shut ALL that shit down.
I think that Dirk revolutionized the game as much as Steph has. ALL of these Euros are here because of Dirk. He opened the door. The original 7 ft, face-up, stretch 4.
Grew up a Mav's fan...I love this guy more than any player ever in Dallas sports. Dirk did so much that didn't get noticed or publicized because he didn't care about the spotlight. He didn't want to win awards for the things he did to support charities and kids. He is such a great human and he is so humble about his approach to life in general. Far to under appreciated for what he did for the game and the people of Dallas.
