I bought a 2006 Nissan XTerra for $750 with a bad transmission. It didn't have the typical radiator cooler failure, but it sure was full of neutrals. Brand new fluid came out of the old transmission but it smelled completely burnt. A friend reached out to me and said I could have the 2wd transmission he had sitting in a corner if I paid the shipping. Now that it's here we're ready to do one of the easiest transmission swaps in the entire world, it only took 2 hours to have the old one out and the new one in.

I have a 2nd Gen that I love...there's certain things to watch out for, but aside from those issues (which were fixed by 2010-2015 models) they're a great vehicle. Mine is lifted on 33's with the rear gutted so I could add a pull out kitchen and sleeping area and storage. I drive it cross country from MN to Moab, UT a couple times a year. I go offroad camping on 4x4 trails on the way down there and back, and do some really epic scenic 4x4 trails while I'm down there camping for a couple weeks. Worth every penny and hour spent for the moments and memories it's given back to me.

@@jacobyo99 On the 1st generation the roof bump with the roof rack made the profile of the truck!
Plus the rear seat is elevated a bit and leverages that bump. The few times I have been riding in the back and not driving it was nice and my nieces and nephews certainly appreciated the boost over the year.
The bulge in the back was Meh - I was always surprised it took them five years to put the logo in the middle of it.

I’m glad you knew about the SMOD. I was going to comment on that and let you know. That is usually the reason those transmissions die.
That Xterra sounds like it has bad timing chain guides too. It’ll run a long time like that but it has that loud whine. It should not whine like that. The fix is replacing the timing chains and guides. There are updated parts available from Nissan that will prevent it from happening again.

Well it sounds like from the opening that this trans was a success. If you have issues down the road you have a ton of parts to swap around or if you want some extra content rebuild the old one on the bench and give it with the truck when you sell it. If not you'll have a ready to go backup. We rebuilt the 727 for my Dart on the driveway in front of it years ago just using a Atra transmission manual and a 50 dollar rebuild master kit plus a new pump and heavy duty cast band.

It has a 3 inch lift with 33s, ARB bumper, Hard Core PA tire carrier, Baja design ditch lights, cali raised LED light bar and this summer a VK56 (Titan V8) goes in. Hey, after the tranny swap you discovered a classic Xterra mystery problem...nothing when you turn the key. My daughter had an '05 that she loved but it developed the same no start issue. Two shops and then the Nissan dealer couldn't find/fix the problem. The dealer said it was fixed but the next morning it had the same problem. She got her money back from the dealer thankfully. She ended up trading the Xterra cuz she couldn't trust it. The Internet didn't offer a definitive answer. But JR found the fix. Way to go.

I can hear the wining sound on your engine, it looks like the timing chain is going, good luck

i recommend changing out the timing chain that's causing that whine that's notorious on the vq40de😁

Yep... that whine is unmistakable. Definitely needs the secondary timing chain guides replaced.

I was about to say the same thing lol I did timing chain guides on two xterras they are a pain. Buy original parts. One truck I worked on had them fail with only 60K miles

Josh...great tutorials on this 2007 Xterra transmission swap..You covered every aspect of what I appear to face on my '05 Xterra 4x4. I bought it used 6 months ago, read all about the 'milkshake' issue with the tranny. Mine recently had a small trans leak last week, the check engine light went off so I pulled off and shut it down. I saw trans fluid dripping near the bell housing but I couldn't locate it.
Now I'm wondering if the trans has been contaminated by the radiator afterall. I havent seen any sign of strawberry milkshake but shifting has a sort of shutter and sometimes it slips into Neutral.. So, I have to ask...what would Josh do?
...a Jayhawk in Portland..my first car..(1970 Datsun 260Z coupe...I'm a Nissan fan to the end.

That has an access cover to get to the converter bolts. I had a frontier at the shop that I had to torch a hole through both covers on the passenger side behind the reinforcement bracket to get to the converter bolts! 34k and they had loosened up. There was no correct way to get to them unless I pulled the transmission.

I just got rid of a 2006 exterra.. it need engine work. I think it spun a bearing because it wouldn't turn over. Oh well now in the junk yard. The body was in great condition. It had about 100k miles. Loved that exterra,it was 4wd..I miss it.

Fixed for free...after I paid for shipping for a transmission that was given in exchange for advertising and used a lift and transmission Jack to install. So for most anyone else it would cost more and be harder to swap.

I just hate it when you do a massive repair job and it doesn't run because of something unforeseen like the shift position in this case. What a good feeling when it does purr and run.

I hear 👂 a noise when turn it on . It’s how humming noise . Like super chargers. Timing chain shoe are worn. There is a Service bulletin . To replace the shoe on secondary chains .
