- On today’s episode of DIYWILLY, we will do a much needed transmission fluid and filter change. The truck has about 170,000 miles on it and we are the second owner and have no idea if it has ever been changed since new. When the fluid drains in to the bucket, the color is near black and well over due for a change. The vehicle owners manual suggest transmission service at every 30k miles interval.
So follow along as we continue to improve and repair our 2008 NISSAN Frontier 4x4 Crew cab.

Yes that would be Spike. He’s about 23yrs old and likes to whistle and talk whenever I filming. I always tell him quite on the set but he doesn’t listen. Thanks for watching!!
Good stuff man. I just completed this on my Frontier. Also used your oil change video. Very helpful. I'll have to look for your video on changing the diff fluid when I get around to that. God bless.
Hello Snake_the Jake, That what all these videos are for, to help people work on the vehicles. Good job man and Thanks for Watching!!!
Very nice tune up. You take your time with style.
Hello DonkeyBizle, Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching!!
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Hello Alex, Glad you liked it.. Thanks for watching!!
Willy.... I love watching your videos for the Nissan Frontier. You make it easy to know how to do Transmission and your stuff you shown. Good job MAN
Hello Ric, so glad you like the videos. Thanks for watching!
Very helpful video ! Thanks for it 👍🏻
Hello Angel, Very happy you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching!!
@@DIYWilly I saw a couple videos about same but only you replaced the filter ! Good job my friend 👍🏻
GREAT VIDEO! THANKS!
Hello Anthony, Glad you liked it!! Thanks for watching!!
Thanks man, appreciate the video. Just something I learned from somebody a while ago which was really helpful - when pouring quart bottles, pour with the side that doesn't have the spout down. It feels counterintuitive, but you can tilt the bottle almost level before fluid comes out. Really helps with hitting the funnel. Thanks again for the video and your time.
Hello Wickate, Great tip!! Thanks for watching!!!
@DIYWilly Thanks mate, you did far better than me hitting the funnel no matter which way I pour, ha ha!
@@Wickate 😂👍
I wish this was a 02 Lincoln ls ima have to do this to mine good vid Man 💯💪💪
Thanks for always taking the time to watch! 👍
Great video. I think I’m going to do this with mine. I want to do it myself to save money and get better at working on vehicles. Out of all the videos I watched this one is the best explained. Subbed
Hello, Glad you liked the video. Just remember to measure the amount of fluid that comes out. It’s very important to put that much of clean fluid back in. Check out my Nissan Frontier Playlist for more great projects.. Good luck!! Thanks for watching and subscribing!!!
Little update here I ended up doing it successfully. I don’t have a garage that fits my truck and there’s hills everywhere here so I had to do it on a little flat-ish spot in my yard and even it out best I could with rocks😂. Anyway I got about 5 quarts out it was a little below that on the bucket but I spilt a good amount on myself so I just put all 5 quarts in. Dip stick looked good on cold and hot. Haven’t had any issues and it is shifting a lot better than it was.
Something I noticed I’m not sure if you did but all those bolts on the screen have numbers on them so I just took a picture on my phone which made it real easy putting back. Those studs with the nuts were a little odd but made reinstalling it easy.
Great tip on the screen bolts. I didn’t notice. Thanks
You can save a lot of money doing fluid changes. The dealer is charging over 100 bucks just for an oil change
Great "How To" video! I was surprised by the number of bolts on the filter. It must be nice to have a drain plug on the transmission pan. I'm used to an armpit full of ATF when I do this on my truck! 🤣
I’m also surprised to have the drain plug.
I’m try to get away from making “ how too” videos and really want to share what I do to my vehicles. If the videos help people then that’s fantastic. But for some reason the videos just turn out to be like how too videos. I’ll keep working on it though.
Hey what mic do you use for your voice overs. I’ve been trying but they haven’t worked out as clear as yours.
@@DIYWilly I think your videos are great! Making these will help a lot of guys learn how to turn a few wrenches on their vehicles. Keep it coming!
I use a Blue Yeti Mic when I do the voiceovers and SquatchD-TV podcast. I don't know much about it but it seems to work ok. Steve gave me this one, I think they're around $100 or so? I tried some of the cheap wireless mics that plug into my phone but they're terrible. I used one of those on the first LCT engine review, never again!
@@KentuckyFriedFixes I’m always happy when I can help.
I just bought a boom mic to help me. It’s an Amazon special to see if I like it than maybe I can invest in a better quantity more expensive one.
This would apply to the 2005-2019 Frontier. The 2020 & up Frontier has the new 3.8L engine and the 9 speed transmission which are different from the previous model.
On the 5speed transmission there is really no need to drop the pan, or mess with the "filter" on a normal service. Regular drain and fill service is all those transmissions should ever need if they are maintained. They don't have a real filter in them, it is really only a screen in there to catch any large debris. I guess if you feel better cleaning out the pan and the magnets, then fine, but I don't see any real value in the extra work during regular maintenance.
I bought my 2019 Frontier new, and I did it's first transmission fluid drain & fill at 20,000 miles (as well as the transfer case and both differentials) and I plan to do that every 20,000 - that is the "severe service" schedule in the manual. I don't do what I would consider severe service usage with my truck, but I feel like following that maintenance schedule is added cheap insurance that will help my truck last a long time. The transmission fluid at 20,000 miles was not noticeably dark. Also, to check the fluid level the truck has to be running & at operating temperature. Cycle through all of the gear shift positions. check the level in park, and you have to rotate the dipstick 180 degrees so that the screw hole in the dipstick is opposite of where it would normally sit - if you don't do that you will not get an accurate reading on the fluid level. The Matic-S fluid is almost clear looking on the dipstick and can be difficult to read at times.
Thanks for clarification and thanks for watching!!
So, can you mention how to do it in a 2020? Thanks in advance
How do you in the fluid en 2020@@ricardoitza8626
Severe service is basically towing.
@@ricardoitza8626 ayes i do it
Dang that's alot of different sized bolts on the filter. The filter looked pretty clean though. I think when I get to this job I'd use the new filter to place the bolts in for reference.
Hello Shaolin, Yes there are a lot of bolts. That’s a great suggestion keeping the bolts organized in the new filter. Thanks for Watching!
They have numbers on them. At least the 2019 does. I just took a picture on my phone and it all worked out.
I bought mine used and the fluid was not changed in years. I did the drain and fill and the transmission did not like it at first. I actually got a code. I waited a few weeks and drained and filled again. The transmission eventually stopped sending codes as it got accustomed to clean fluid.
I drain and fill one a year now regardless of the mileage that was added.
Hello JD, Great information! Thanks for watching!!
What was your mileage?
JD, the mileage is about 150k .
I changed trans fluid and filter last year, and made a mess too, lol. Also put synthetic gear oil in the rear diff. and conventional oil in the front diff. (Don't use 4wd very much, but its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it), btw those ryobi cordless tools work really great! Nice video!👍🇺🇸
Don't forget about the transfer case fluid. I changed the fluid in mine for the first time at 20,000 miles and it was already dark! They only hold around 2 quarts of fluid, Nissan Matic-D.
@Mike.D.843 ...yeah I did change it a few months ago, was pretty dark..thanks.👍🚙
I still need to do that. But I have done both differentials.
I got to do brakes on pilot starter on the g6 alternator on the civic the f450 killed me in fuel this week
Good Stuff willing. I will be doing mine also, but I will be adding the Red Line Synthetic Transmission Fluid "D4" At $17+ a Quart I will be hoping for the best, I'm using Red Line as it is a Superior transmission fluid when it comes to heat and cold a doesn't break down as most conventional Transmission fluids. I'm gong to change the filter while I am at it.
Thanks for sharing.
Hello ELEVOPR, Glad you liked the video.. Sounds like you have a good plan of attack for your drain and refill. Thanks for watching!!!
I wouldn’t bother changing the screen next time. Just do a simple drain and fill. As the fluid was so bad you might want to do it again in a few thousand miles. I do mine every 15-25k miles. It takes me less time than an oil change at this point. I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF as is is significantly cheaper and has been used by many people including myself with excellent results on these trucks.
Hello Brent, Yes I wanted to see inside and check the condition of things. The screens/filters are not expensive but yes agree that next time at 25k-30k will be a drain and refill. I believe the screen can be washed out even. I did see the Maxlife as an alternative but opt for the Magic-S. Thanks for taking the time to watch and offer a great suggestion. 👍
I have a 2012 Frontier Pro4x, just wondering why not change the screen? Haynes manual says change "trans filter" every 30000 miles....is manual incorrect? And hey do have a different looking filter/screen in the pictures from the manual than the one OP removed.
My guess is the manual is being extra cautious. see how clean his screen was at 13:36 when it came out and how dirty the fluid was? That means it's not really filtering the contaminants; it just catches anything really big. If the fluid comes out reasonably clean and there aren't transmission problems, there's no reason to change it. plus, it's a screen so you can just clean with brake cleaner and replace. @@nicholasheuermann9221
You never showed how you tighten those screws up that had nuts (studs) timestamp place 14:15
. I just did mine today and I had to use some super small needle nose pliers to hold the stud while putting on the screw and slowly screw on the nut then I had to grab the stud on top while I finished tightening the bolt.
Hello William, I just held the studs much like you said enough to put on the bolts and then tighten them up. Great to hear how you did it. I’m sure your comment will help someone else. Thanks for watching!!
Dude thank you. I'm currently doing this and was at a loss as to how I could tighten those nuts.
Thanks for the video. Safety suggestion is to wear safety glasses when working under a vehicle. Getting tranny fluid or any other crap in your eyes isn’t safe.
Thanks for the suggestion! 👍 Thanks for watching!!!
You need to check fluid level with engine running
Yes agree and preferably warm.. Thanks for watching!!
Oil change for 2021 model
I have a 2012 4WD SV KC and the pan is rusting out and starting to seep through and drip. Seems local stealership is best way to go for a new pan and gasket. I am considering not bothering with the "filter" as it is just a screen, and if it doesn't appear from the bottom that that screen is not full of debris, just leave it alone and put on the new pan, gasket and fill her back up with fluid. Thoughts?
When i drained mine i got 4qts even out before pan drop
That should be all that goes back. Always check the levels though!!
Quick follow up, did changing it at 170 cause any issues for you often time if you change atf that has never been changed you can introduce slipping and gear loss. Did you expereince any of that?
Hello, Great question!! We haven’t experienced any issues with the transmission. The truck drives amazingly well considering the mileage and abuse it gets. Thanks for watching!!
@@DIYWilly thank you so much for the reply. My father requested I change the fluid on his 90k trans and it had not be changed before, so was doing some research.
Hola a cuántas libras va el torque por favor gracias
The transmission pan bolts torque to 70 in-lbs. Thanks for watching!!
Your gasket has bolt holding holes in it so you don not half to use silicone. My Nissan fluid was dark green out of the containers.
Yes I realized that afterwards.. 😬 Thanks for watching!!
What did you do with the 3 studs that dont grab anything?
Hello Justin, I was able to rethread those studs and tighten every up. Just hold them and put the nut on. Thanks for watching!!
@@DIYWilly yeah thats what I did it just seems sketchy to me. Thanks for the video
Duh. I read the above explanation and had my question answewed.
No worries.. What year is your truck?
How many miles dose your truck have before you changed your transmission fluid I had mine changed by Nissan at 60,000 my truck is a 2017 with 126,000 on it now
Hello Fourtrax, We are the second owner of this truck and I had never changed it before now. The truck has about 170k on it so I know it was well over due. Who knows if the previous owner did the scheduled maintenance on the truck. I will definitely be doing better with my maintenance. Thanks for watching!
So does it have filter or just a screen. Can i do a drain and fill?
Hello, it has a screen and yes you could do a drain and refill. Just measure what comes out so you put the same amount back in. Thanks for watching!!
You should wear eye protection when you are laying under the car like that!
Yes absolutely! Great suggestion!! Thanks for watching!!
It is a Jatco 5 speed Transmission and it has a screen and not a conventional fiber filter!
Hello JD, yes I know I changed the metal screen. I did call it a filter but just a bad use of terminology. Thank for watching!
It is a filter
it’s a screen
@@DIYWillyI did a trans fluid change on my 13 Altima’s cvt. It has both the screen and a paper filter inside a metal cup. The paper filter is so much smaller than a regular engine filter. Not sure, if these AT transmissions on Nissan have a paper filter hiding somewhere.
@@hulong0205that’s good to know. I’ll look in to that. Thanks for watching!!
Lol hello yea I just got cyborg juice all on my face smh dang willy
I barely got out of the way…😆
Did you see a difference in driving after?
Hello Truth, I wanna say the shifts are smoother but that truck runs and drives great anyway it could be my imagination. Either way the service was overdue and is good preventative maintenance. Thanks for watching!
How many miles on the old fluid?
Hello Will, I really couldn’t tell you how many miles or how old the fluid was when I changed. We bought the truck used and put 30k miles on it before the change. Thanks for watching!!
Anyone know if 2019 is the same type of filter?
I believe it depends on what tranny is in your truck.
@@DIYWilly I believe it’s a Re5r05a trans
From what I understand it’s the same transmission. So should be the same.
Type fluid varies. Just cant put anything in there
Hello, Not really.. You should you the recommended type of fluid as per the manufacturer. There are other brand available but the same type… Thanks for watching!!
What size of engine is this?
This truck has the 4.0 V6. Thanks for watching!!!
Mine (178900miles)never has been changed I’m scared that if I do that I will have problems
Hello Michael, with that amount of mile the service is overdue. It’s very similar to changing the engine oil. You do that right? IT’s easy enough. You should consider doing the service. If you’re not confident enough to do it than take it too a “REPUTABLE” service center and have it done. This way you will have a warranty agreement to protect you and avoid costly repairs. Thanks for watching!!
@@DIYWilly I bought a 2007 Frontier a couple of years ago. Immediately after I bought it I took it in for service and check up to see what I had got and what needed fixing. I asked the shop (Nissan of Corona) to change the trans fluid. I swapped the radiator to see and avoid the dreaded SMOD and did not see any sign of transmission fluid in the coolant. The Nissan shop warned me that changing the trans fluid with so many miles on it (about 149k) might actually cause problems. They were right. About 5000 miles later the transmission started slipping and I ended up having it rebuilt. YMMV but my lesson learned was either change the fluid per the service intervals, or leave it alone until the transmission needs overhaul/repair.
@@petereastwood7868 Well that’s one way to look at it. out of sight out of mind I guess. If it works don’t fix it. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a great comment..
@@DIYWilly Now that my trans has been rebuilt I plan on changing the fluid per the book. But the warning the Nissan shop gave me was for a high mileage but never flushed transmission. I don’t put a lot of miles on my truck so it will be a few years before I need to flush the trans.
BTW - I just finished the secondary timing chain tensioner shoe repair and I watched your video on the subject (and others) several times to see what I was getting into. Helped a lot. Thanks. Between cold weather and waiting on parts it took me a ridiculously long time, but it all works well now.
It’s a great little truck.
That’s great new that you replaced the tensioner guides. Sounds like your taking good care of the Frontier?
should be a little extra due to a spill
The 2020-2021 has the ZF 9 speed. The process isn't the same. It has no dipstick.
Great information! Thanks for watching!!
When should you change the Transmission fluid with the 9 speed? I have a 2021 with 57k miles never changed fluid yet..
@@elanfair6752 60k under normal use, 30k if you tow or off road a lot.
Is it really necessary to use Nissan branded ATF?
No but you need to make sure it’s compatible. There are plenty of guys on CZcams using different fluids. Thanks for watching!!
14:40 70 in.lbs is not 8 ft.lbs. It is more like 6 ft.lbs (actually 6 ft.lbs is 72 in.lbs, but that’s a negligible difference).
8 ft.lbs would be 96 in.lbs.
