    Cheers from Japan.
    0:40~ _Shiratama-ko_ and _mochi-ko_ are made from the same, glutinous rice. The difference is when the rice is ground: _shiratama-ko_ is made by grinding the rice with water (usually the water that was used to wash the rice), while _mochi-ko_ is made from rice that has been dried prior to grinding.
    _Jōshin-ko_ is like _mochi-ko_ , other than the rice used: _mochi-ko_ is powdered glutinous rice, as I mentioned earlier, while _jōshin-ko_ is powdered non-glutinous rice.
    4:37~ 5:03~ I think the _binchō-tan_ was not hot enough, and you used too little. _Binchō-tan_ is usually heated using regular, black charcoal as a primer, and all the pieces should be completely red-hot and ashen when it's ready to use.
    Also, don't forget to make open spaces when you place the charcoal so that air can pass through, and make sure that air is consistently fed into the bottom of the grill.

    • @Finwolven
      @Finwolven Před 2 lety +82

      I only have experience with Finnish charcoal grilling, but I was thinking exactly the same about the charcoal - it didn't seem like it was properly lit and certainly couldn't get enough air to maintain combustion inside that insulated box.

    Coming from a time where I had to whisper to friends about anime when I was in school, it sometimes feels surreal that now, there are a plethora of people on CZcams recreating the foods from anime and there's an open community around it. Think that's why I love this series, not about the foods themselves but the ability to be able to openly express a niche interest (niche given the population of the world) with other people.

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Před 2 lety +20

      @@andynonymous6769 Ha, you still had it better, lol. Imagine having no mobile option for watching anime, you MUST watch it on TV, out front in the living room with the rest of the family. Sometimes I would allow myself to miss an episode, too embarrassed to ask that the channel be changed to what I wanted. But even then, my family wasn't the main issue.
      It was those at school and even my friends whom I didn't trust with that knowledge. Managed to still run into a few fans though, especially for a popular show in the early 2000's called Inuyasha (its sequel, Yashahime, is airing right now). A friend's boyfriend liked to watch Inuyasha (points to the guy for being a fan, it's definitely geared more towards girls), and there was an upper classman who did an art project in English and used Inuyasha as her subject. I would get to talk to the girl who did it on a creative writing excursion we were invited to by our English teacher as some of her favorite students, lol. I admired her bravery for just putting her interests out there like that (that just sounds like the start of calling her my "senpai", lol!).
      Think she also graduated valedictorian of her year, so when you're secure in your position at the top like that, I guess that gives you the guts to kind of not care what anyone else thinks of you. Oh, and being a senior...likewise, by the time I hit 12th grade, I too was all out of f**k's to give, the beauty of graduating and moving on with your life.
      Anywho, lol. Happy your brother got into anime as well! And that too happened with my brothers, especially my younger one. I now share multiple streaming services with him. And...my mom's gotten into it, too. My Hero Academia and One Punch Man are her favorites :)

    So I see you have a chimney to heat the charcoal. What it looks like is you didn't do it properly. The bottom part of it should be filled with paper like newspaper and light on fire. That way it starts to light the bottom coals and the bottom coals light the upper and create a sort of convection of heat. You want them to get really bright and red in the chimney before moving them to the binchotan.

      A better way to avoid that is to be specific. Do you like that he sounds like a narrator? Do you like the way he speaks slowly? Think about those questions before reducing it to "he is well-spoken".

    I’ve cooked with charcoal my whole life so seeing you struggle with it, I see what might be the problem. The charcoal you used were correct but they were to little. You should have added a bit more charcoal into the bin, because the amount you place really wasn’t enough. They also need to be blazing red-like illuminating the basin with red-then it would be hot enough to char. So again, the amount you used PLUS the blaze of the charcoal is what I think may have affected it

    To correctly get your grill going, you need to put the charcoal into your chimney and place it over the stove burner with the grate removed. After the charcoal is fully white and glowing, you transfer it to the grill, then use a hand fan to make it hotter if needed. This is basically how it is typically done in restaurants in Japan.

  • @marvelousjefferson7272
    @marvelousjefferson7272 Před 2 lety +2

    The charcoal is tough until you have used it a few times. You have to get it very hot, usually via direct heat like a butane burner, and a chimney starter. This may take 20-30 minutes, yes really. Get it hot, load the grill by placing your pieces longways (opposite of how your tiny pieces were placed). The heat will intensify over about 10 minutes. Binchotan will stay that hot for a few hours, so be ready with lots of dango and yakitori.

    To make a charcoal consistency you take the rack outside and hold it over an open fire carefully and at a reasonable distance
