Ben Wallace and Mutombo 4 times defensive player of the year ... and aren't they? They are the top winners of that prize
Johan Gallardo bill Russell and wilt both played before the dpoy was a thing they probably would have more tbh and Hakeem is just objectively better
To add on to ^, the question with these lists is always who would you take off for them.
I hate these people that use DPOY awards to justify how a player was on defense. Then I guess Tim Duncan Scottie Pippen and Bruce Bowen weren’t great defenders cause they never won DPOY right? These awards are the worst way of determining players impacts.
Where's kawhi, ben wallace and possibly mutombo?
I can’t understand why Pippen couldn’t get a DPOY.
DPOY awards were usually given to big men in that era (Outside of MJ, that era was big men dominant) and Pippen played with some other defensive legend most of his career so he was overlooked quite a bit.
He had two of the greatest defensive players on his team, and Ron harper
Nagidar23 Payton won it as a guard
@@samhartje723
How about Rodman? But he didn't have Rodman or Harper for that long. Most of his career was without either of them and he showed what he was capable of defensively even in that time without them. He probably should have won at least 1 DPOY
I know this video is old but there is no way Stockton was a better defender then Kidd and Paul.. Stockton never even made a single 1st team all defense. Paul mad 7 and Kid made 4. They both went to 9 total defensive teams each. Who the fuck made this list?
I have Hakeem as my starting Center. Trust him defending the pick and roll better with his quickness and was a great shot blocker.
A lot of people don't understand how good Wilt was on defense, let me just give you one quick example, The "Unblockable" Skyhook of Kareem was blocked 4 times, 3 times by wilt and 2 of them were in the same 5 seconds as the famous clip in the video shows, I seriously wish they recorded blocks back then so people can see truly how good guys like bill Russel's and wilt actually were
I was thinking Wilt over Mutombo? That's interesting. Then I saw Wilt block the fucking Skyhook and I was like, Oh, okay!!! They didn't record blocks in his day, if they did, he and Russell would probably each have around 5,000 blocks, leaving Olajuwon a distant 3rd!!!
Stonemansteve II something to consider however: the game and the players were different. Back in Wilt's & Russell's day you had centers at around 6'4". Essentially it's like grown men playing a bunch of 5th graders. Olajuwon played in perhaps the greatest decade for big men...... and dominated! That's why I'd put Hakeem at the top of the center's list. Food for thought....
The second skyhook block was goaltending...
@@J-S.P I think you misspelt point guard as center.
i know im very late but based on 134 games recorded for russell he averaged 9.9 blocks in those games and wilt had 8.2 that is insane
where the hell is Ben Wallace?!?!
Back there in the list of average players!!
Stonemansteve II I'm sorry this is late but say again?? Average???? Ben Wallace was a fucking superstar. All-star Game 4 time just for defense, 3 dpoy. No joke the second best defensive center of all time.
He's at home still trying to get the taste of Kobe's nuts out of his mouth.
czcams.com/video/sjj8Uob7HuM/video.html. Lol. No disrespect intended to Ben; he's a superstar; but he's a center. Who would you have him replace-- Russell, Olajuwon or Chamberlain?
@@gillheatfan
I'm just as late to your comment as you were to Stonemansteve but here goes. Ben Wallace was a defensive beast but he isn't the 2nd best defensive center of all time. 1 is Bill Russell and 2 is Hakeem Olajuwan. Dikembe Mutombo would probably get the nod for 3 leaving Wallace out.
@@madmartigan8774 Bill Russell played against too many short white guys to be considered No 1. I'm old enough to remember Olajuwan and Mutombo, and for stuffing shots, Mutombo all day. 1. Mutombo 2.Wallace for centers
If we're talking about all-time, I'm gonna have to take issue with Wade & Bowen, but other than that, this list is pretty spot on!!
Bruce Bowen guarded the best player of opp team and helped the spurs WIN 3 OF THEIR 5 CHIPS
D Wade top ten in steals for sg
And also leader of BLOCKS for sg
Nuff said son
@StonemansteveII
They are pretty deserving of their spots but I would bump Wade down to the "extra guard" position and put Tony Allen at the SG bench or possibly even starting SG position. Bowen should maybe be bumped slightly off the list or to a bench position but still pretty deserving of a spot
Bowen was a beast, though. Teams went out of their way to avoid him and he would shut people down.
Where the hell is Tony Allen? Kobe said TA was the best defender to guard him.
olajuwon is the best center who leads in blocks and steals.
John Stockton is the leader in assist and STEALS but Hakeem does lead In blocks
@@lallitthor9977 but john is not the list and he is not best defender in guard position
Way Haha bill Russell pioneered jumping to block shots
@@GodzillaFreak against who ??
garxajis pure how does competition dictate whether or not an idea was impressive?
No Ben Wallace?
Korey Morgan 100% agree
HELL NO!!!
Ben Wallace is a 5. Who would you have him replace: Russell, Olajuwon or Chamberlain? Love Ben Wallace. Love Mutuombo. But those guys are top 5, not top 3.
Ben is great but not better than Russell or Hakeem
agree, ben Wallace is a 4x nba defensive player of the year, defense is more than just stats. bruce bowen was picked and he didn't ever win a dpoy or average more than a steal per game, tho he was probably the best defender in the league.
crazy to think 3 of those starters played for the same team at one point in time? and u smoking rocks not havin artest on there
1st team
PG -> Payton
SG -> Jordan
SF -> Pippen
PF -> Rodman (I loved him for what he did on the court, he's the player that made me love defense more than the offense)
C -> Olajuwon
2nd team
PG -> Stockton (all time leader in steals)
SG -> Wade (#1 in blocks as a shooting guard)
SF -> Leonard
PF -> Duncan (15 times selected on the All NBA defensive teams without winning DPOY which is a joke)
C -> Russell (the innovator of "Defensive mindset")
3rd team
G -> Joe Dumars (Michael Jordan himself said that he was the hardest player to drive through)
F -> Garnett
C -> Either Dikembe Mutombo or Ben Wallace respectively
G - Gary Payton
G - Micheal Jordan
F - Scottie Pippen
F - Ben Wallace
C - Hakeem
Tough list gimme Kobe over d wade and Bowen at guard
~\My team/~
My staretiers
PG-Gary Pay a ton, he was the best overall defender (for pgs obviously)
SG-Mikal Jardin, enough said.
SF-Scottie Pipe up, great at clamping up people and played bigger than he was
PF-Roddy Rich a.k.a Wormboi a.k.a Steel Rod, again, no need to say anything.
C-Hakeem Odreamawon, Amazing shot blocker and used various techniques only guards would use because they were small but he did too
Bemch
PG-The stock photo, not amazing but for a pg great, good at mugging his opponent because he could wrestle it out with surprising strength
SG-Dw-yane Wade, had very good vert to block shots even though he was 6'4
SF-Ko-hi Lenird, yassssss
PF-Ben of the wallaces was not good enough to be put at center over the Russel Water Bill
C-The Russel water Bill was very good blocker and when turned around could chase you down and smack that ball outt of those hands and did it so no fouls were called
Extra 1: Tumbly Tumbo Cookie Monster was second best shot blocker, would 1000% be best if was 7'6 like Manute
Extra 2: Metta World Wack was known as the Game Changer. Nah JK the Name Changer. Was good. (im tired of writing these)
Xtra 3 is prob KG or Will of Icy Chainberlin i wanna put a guard but the bigs are better idk lemme go to bed

Tony Allen?
Guys, There's only so many spots, so yeah there's gonna be names people think should've gotten in!! But I haven't seen a single person saying Mark Eaton? He only lead NBA history in Blocks per game in his career but he only played 11 years, so guys like Hakeem and Mutombo that played 18 years have higher career totals and therefore look better

Wade is the better shot blocker, gets in the passing lanes more & fouled less. He gets my vote.
Wilt had a quintuple double one game. Enough said. And only two people blocked the sky hook. Wilt and Artis. And Artis only blocked it once. Wilt did it several times and did it twice with 5 seconds.

Well Ben was listed at C for the very large majority of his career so I think he has to be considered a C but if we are just comparing Ben and Rodman's defense regardless of position, Ben is clearly the better defender if you ask me. Ben could do almost everything Rodman could do defensively except he also actually got a high amount of blocks and steals. Much better rim protector and better hands. It's not even a question for me

you might be on to something
@larry smith
It's no diss to Kobe, he was just being real and paying homage to Wade's all time great defense. All-defensive team selections are a joke. Kobe is tied for 2nd most all-defensive selections and is tied for the most all-defensive 1st teams even though he isn't anywhere near the greatest defender ever or even perimeter defender. Wade's defense is very underrated as far as all-defensive selections are concerned, he deserved almost every selection over Kobe from 2004-05 through 2012-13 with the exception of 1 or 2 because of lack of games played due to injury. Jordan and Tony Allen are the only 2 better defensive SGs in NBA history than Wade

Lebron doesn't play defense anymore. He's a liability.
Kobe is definitely a better defender than Wade, and if there was BPG recorded in 60s, Wilt Chamberlain BPG stats will be off the chart. and last, why a lousy one on one defender like LeBrom James is on the list? that is very very stupid.
@Foster Wong
No Wade is definitely a better defender than Kobe. Forget the opinionated all-defensive selections. Kobe wasn't better than Wade in any aspect of defense. LeBron is a great one on one defender. His defense has lacked the last few regular seasons but he still brings his elite D in the playoffs
@@justsayin669 wow, now I know how stupid a person can be.
@@user-bh7dk5xc4n
Haha stay blinded by those media voted awards but it's pretty clear that Wade was a better defender. He was a bit better shot blocker and got steals at virtually the same rate. Their one on one perimeter defense was pretty even (slight edge to Wade if anything) but Wade was a bit better post defender and help defender. As far as LeBron is concerned, anyone who has watched him more than the last 2 years and isn't a hater knows that LeBron has had elite defense throughout his career until recent regular seasons. Don't blame me for your lack of knowledge and inability to put opinionated awards such as all-defensive selections to the side

hard to compare era's in the NBA. I am not sure any of this is valid, but a good video sir. The 90's and earlier guys were a lot more physical, i wonder how they would compare to the sissy whiners of today in the NBA. Rule changes, hard to understand. The court is not level, you develop certain skills because of the rules.
