Chris Paul - Lockdown II

    Chris Paul is undoubtedly one of the fiercest competitors in the league. There’s this all-consuming fire in him. You can see in his eyes how much he wants to win. He finished 5th in the league in steals after playing all 82 games in the regular season and rightfully earned his fourth straight first-team all-defense nod.
    He’s a punishing point guard with phenomenal footwork. He pounces on the ball with physicality and precision. When he’s not creating chaos by poking the ball loose, he’s just outright taking it away with aggression and activity. He just WANTS the ball more than anyone else at times, wrestling and sometimes just willing the ball away from his opponents. Chris really doesn’t care about how big the guys are in his way. He just knows that there’s someone standing between him and what he wants. He will use any advantage he has, whether that’s his quickness, or toughness, or maybe even just his savvy of being able to hit a guy in a way the ref doesn’t notice. He doesn’t care. CP knows two things more than maybe anybody in the league: heart over height and persistence perseveres.
    If you’re on the fence about this video, I urge you to check it out at least until 2:15. In it, you’ll see how impressive his timing and active hands are in shutting down (and I mean shutting DOWN) transition opportunities.
    This is more a redo with added clips as opposed to an outright, completely new video, so if you watch the original one I did, there's a lot of overlap. I did, however, feel like I could edit it better so I set about doing that.

    It's really impressive how good he has been defensively throughout his career. He's pretty much the smallest guy on the court in every match, but he's like a fucking gnat out there. Just tenacious and with a brilliant BBIQ. He's now in his mid 30s and he's still a top 10 defensive guard in the league. Just a beast.

    cp3 is probably the best defender among all PGs in the league. a case can be made for John Wall, too. a lot of cp3's steals come from his cerebral understanding of plays. he sees when a play is being made, coming into form. then he steps in for the kill. during an Open Court interview with coaches, Alvin Gentry (then coaching the Suns against the Hornets) said cp3 was telling his (Gentry's) player that he was in the wrong spot for the play haha

On top of that, realize how many games the Clippers beaten the Warriors and yet suddenly they couldn’t win a single game after the prime of Warriors. How can curry be considered better than a man who plays better defense, can drop 30 whenever he wants although usually when Blake Griffin is out or in the playoffs, is the best passer in the league, has a great mid range jumper and great 3 point shot (not as good as currys but still), and makes his teammates better?

    • @ThaDreamMerchant
      @ThaDreamMerchant Před 8 lety +31

      +Sachin Johri Because Curry gets all the hype from the media. He's great, but I'd still pick CP3 to start at PG over any other in the league.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu Před 8 lety +3

      +The Dream Merchant Same. I'd also take Russ but that's arguable. CP3 I personally think is much better because of how long he's been great too. Curry had one great season and now everyone thinks he's better. KD had one FANTASTIC season with 32 ppg but no one gave him the best player title

    • @ThaDreamMerchant
      @ThaDreamMerchant Před 8 lety +12

      Sachin Johri Exactly. Curry's my boy but damn, people need to hop off the tip. Only reason I wouldn't take Russ (he'd be 2nd though) is because he's still a turnover machine and CP3 has a 4:1 A/TO for his entire career so far, which is bananas.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu Před 8 lety +3

      Sachin Johri Yeah that's true. Once Kerr came along, the entire atmosphere of that team changed. I was hoping Harden would win MVP since the Rockets still got the 2nd seed despite having Howard and a couple other main guys missing over half the season but it is what it is. "you can't really stop superstars from exploding." This statement makes me SICK. It's a statement Stephen A. Smith would make and that's part of the problem. THe NBA marketing team builds these players up to be greater than they really are; they are manufactured stars. Everything caters to making these players great, favorable rules, media buildup, promotions, favorable calls, all to manufacture a "great" player. There's a reason many players make a HUGE jump from what they did in college to the NBA, the league helps players become great. I should write a thesis on this because everything from the NBA Board of Governor's rules changes of 1999, 2001 and 2004 have led up to this point where we believe these players are greater than they really are. What as CP3 really done? Or James Harden? They haven't won anything. They will be afterthoughts like, Kevin Johnson and Tim Hardaway Sr. in the 90s.

    The notion that Chris Paul is an elite defender is farcical, at least in the playoffs when it matters most. Paul has been outplayed in the majority of his matchups against elite PGs in the playoffs when it matters.
    *2009 1st Round*
    Chauncey Billups
    23-4-7 on 48%, 1.2 TOpg and 66% 3PT
    Chris Paul
    17-4-10 on 41%, 4.8 TOpg
    Billups scored way more efficiently and was the way better playmaker, Paul had quadruple the turnovers as Billups. Billups had a 6:1 ast:to ratio to Paul's 2:1
    *2014 1st Round*
    Steph Curry
    23-4-8-2 on 44%
    Chris Paul
    17-5-9-3 on 42%
    Paul won only because he had the better supporting cast. Curry clearly outplayed him, despite having less help. It's also worth noting that the Warrior's best rebounder in Andrew Bogut didn't play due to injury, yet Curry still pushed Paul's far superior supporting cast to 7 games.
    *2014 WCSF*
    Russell Westbrook
    28-6-9-2 on 49% and 50/57 FTs (89%)
    Chris Paul
    23-4-12-3 on 51% and 18/24 FTs (75%)
    Westbrook scored way more and way more efficiently as he went to the line more than twice as much, shooting almost 90%. Paul also choked away the eventually deciding game 5 with his 2 turnovers including on the game winning attempt. He fouled Westbrook on his 3pter, so Russell made 3 FTs to take the lead. Westbrook outplayed him in the clutch of the eventually deciding game, further cementing that Westbrook outplayed him for the series. Had Paul not done that epic choke job, the Clippers would have been up 3-2 with Game 6 in LA.
    And in 2012, as bad as Tony Parker played, Chris Paul was even worse
    *2012 WCSF*
    Chris Paul
    13-4-9 on 37% only 5/5 FTs
    Tony Parker
    17-3-8 on 36% and 24/29 FTs
    Their statlines are even until you consider Parker went to the line almost 6 times as much, scoring more efficiently (albeit still not good efficiency) and putting fouls on opposing defenders.
    Parker did clearly outplay him over the series when you put Parker and Paul's worst games aside. Parker averaged 21-4-7 on 40% over the last 3 games to Paul's 15-4-9 on 41% after they both played garbage in Game 1.
    In the 2015 Playoffs, Parker was playing with an injured Achilles, ankle, and quadriceps, which was more responsible for his poor numbers than Paul's defense.
    When Parker was healthy in the 2008 WCSF, he put up the same numbers on Paul that he did for the regular season, and nailed the series-clinching shot in Paul's face.
    Tony Parker
    2008 regular season
    18.8 ppg 6.0 apg on 49%
    *2008 WCSF vs Paul*
    19.4 ppg 5.7 apg on 49%
    Over-gambling for steals in the passing lanes like Iverson for some steals titles doesn't hide that Paul is a very sub-par defender in the playoffs against notable PGs.

      @cp3sucks344 Před 8 lety

      the excuse about Chris Paul being smaller than those players is not valid. The majority of great offensive players in history had their toughest time against smaller defenders
      Jordan vs Payton
      Shaq vs Rodman
      Wilt vs Russell
      Hakeem vs Anthony Mason
      LeBron vs Iguodala (shot 18-54, 33% when guarded by Iguodala in Finals)
      Dirk vs Haslem
      Bird vs Cooper
      Kareem vs Thurmond
      also you can't praise Paul as an elite defender and then backtrack and use his lack of physical ability as an excuse when he does get lit up. If his physical disadvantages stop him from locking down players then that's his problem.
      1st - Chris Paul had his best statistical year in 2008/09, he averaged 20-10 on 50%, something only Magic and Kevin Johnson have done (twice each) and Billups was at the end of his good years.
      2nd - Paul outplayed Parker in 2008, but Parker still lit up his defense while the Hornet's interior defenders kept Duncan in check. In 2012 they both played bad in Game 1, then putting their numbers in context Parker outplayed him over the last 3 games to sweep him.
      In 2015, Parker was playing with an injured achilles, ankle, and quadriceps so it's not surprising that Paul outplayed him. when Parker was healthy in 2008 and 2012 he didn't have any problem against Paul's defense
      3rd - it's not just FTs, Westbrook outplayed him overall and in the clutch moments of Game 5 which eventually decided the series.

    CP3 has the highest per of all time. He made a garbage new orleans team take san antonios championship squad to seven games during his early years. hes is the best all around pg in the league. Great instincts, awareness and if it wasnt for his height he dominate in the playoffs more often. Its not easy going up against defenders who are at least five inches taller. He can see the play coming and is quick and savvy enough to be at the spot!

      sheow grayson steals does count as defense... Watch other lockdown defenders Gary Payton was known for stealing the ball that's why he was considered one of the best lockdown defenders.

      @B.r.o.k.e.n.b.o.y Před 7 lety +6

      Sebastian Landrito I'm not saying steal is not part of defense? But there a difference between lockdown and steals. Lockdown means you keep your defender in front of you and limit his play but steals are just steals. Cutting a pass is also stealing, so is that considered lockdown defence?

    • @TheIcemanthomas
      @TheIcemanthomas Před 6 lety +11

      Daiki Aomine but most off cps steals come from him keeping his man in front of him and stealing it from the offensive player on ball. His quick hands and up in your body positioning is what makes him a lockdown defender, not just the steals themself. He never lets tge often much bigger players force him out of his stance. He stands his ground and plays smart, but physical D, and never gives up on a play, no matter the size of his opposition. That makes him indeed a lockdown defender.

    Chris Paul's defense has been grossly exaggerated and overrated as the years go by. His defensive reputation comes mostly from his record 6 steals titles, but these are often the result of gambling and over-playing the passing lane which leads to defensive breakdowns when he does not come up with the steal. Iverson is tied for the 2nd-most steals titles at 3 and Baron Davis is the all-time playoff leader in SPG for similar reasons.
    Chris Paul has been outscored in head to head playoff series against 2009 Billups, 2012 Parker, 2014 pre-prime Curry, and 2014 Westbrook missing 36 of 82 games in the season, and has been lit up in other series as well. Considering he has only played in 13 playoff series, this is a very high proportion of bad defensive series.
    Billups' highest 3PT% in any series (66%) came against Chris Paul's vastly overrated defense in the 2009 1st Round, and Westbrook's highest FG% in any series (49%) came against Chris Paul's vastly overrated defense in the 2014 WCSF. Further contradicting the narrative that the media and defense-team voters have pushed throughout his career.
