How To Prevent Inflatable Airblown Decorations from Falling Over

- Years ago air-blown inflating yard decorations were a novelty you’d only see on a few front yards during the Christmas season. These airblown inflatables are quickly and easily set up, don’t take up much storage space, and can transforming the look of a yard in minutes. But they all have one big weakness: strong winds can blow them down, or even send them flying right out of your yard.
0:00 Watch a 4 year old get crushed by an inflatable Santa
0:15 Attach steel bars to widen the surface area of the blower's feet
0:55 Skip the wimpy stakes - use larger landscaping nails or even tent pegs
1:31 Secure ropes with big tent pegs, drive at an angle opposite of the string pull direction
1:49 I keep the steel plates on for storage
Almost all airblown inflatables are designed in the same way: The decoration is inflated with a constant flow of air provided by an electric fan encased in a plastic base. The plastic base usually has three or four legs which are supposed to be “staked” into the ground with thin, smooth and light aluminum spikes. The inflatable decoration itself usually features two or more “tie down” cords which are staked into the grass as well, just to keep the inflated decoration standing straight and slightly more secure in breezy weather.

Just did this to my inflatable snowman. Thanks for the tip.
This is just plain ingenious! The wife and I just bought a 12 foot Santa from the Home Depot. I have it rigged up good but now Santa looks like he is looking to the road 😂 I will definitely do this. Thanks so much
I love your idea and it was my inspiration. I ended up using heavy chain, looping it through the base, and then staking the chain. Again, like you said, it can be stored with the decoration.
This was so cute!!!! It reminds me of my little boy at that age now he's 34!!!
I bought a grate from Menards, zip tied the holes to the grate and put a big brick on the back. Santa l isn’t going anywhere unless there’s a tornado!
Great idea with the legs !
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
Real nice!
Thank you
I just bought 2' rods, bent the end in a vice like a candy cane and pounded them through the holes,no problem
yeah, i bought premade rebar stakes like that about 16 inches with the candy cane end or loop at end
Wow
Would be nice if there was a working list to purchase the materials
What are those plates called
question: you are hammering those landscaping nails into the grass as opposed to something solid. What if the ground is not solid enough, wouldn't they still come out of the ground with high winds?
good
Where do I get the sterling plates from ? And what is the size ?
0:01 - 0:08 That part cracked me up where the Santa Claus Airblown Inflatable falls down towards that little boy.

Good information if the base keeps falling but what about the inflatable tipping/bending even with the lines being taunt? I cannot get the dang thing to stay up unless there is zero wind.
A little bending is good (and even safe) but in high winds you may want to not run it. I've found that we had to use bigger, thicker stakes for the cords and we often put them in so tight the inflatable was ever-so-slightly pulled "downward"... you really couldn't notice it bit it helps.
Mine don't come with the 3-4 plastic leg bases one the stakes and ropes that come with them and don't work well. My inflatables never go up by themselves, I always have to go and adjust them at least the 7 feet tall ones. The smaller ones go up OK by themselves. Do you have a solution?
I put giant stakes about 16 inches long and spread them out in 4 directions two on each side of inflatable attached with parachute cord.
Hi there I have that same exact same Santa from Lowe, but I haven't been able to use it as the fan works but it won't inflate like yours shows in the video he inflates enough to have his head and glove off the ground and that's it did you modify yours, any suggestion would be appreciated.
it might not be getting enough airflow in if leaves get sucked in or legs are not high enough off ground some have straps to hold legs from spreading out too much or you have small holes letting air out i find the fans die with age and the fabric gets worn and has micro holes all over it as they get old and worn.
Also, where do you find those steel plates with holes in them? I looked at Home Depot website and didn't see them.
I see something called Zinc Steel Punched Flat Bar with 1/16 in. thick that looks similar to what you show.
Why don’t you have the clips a attached to the blower
I have had that happen to me before but it was off camera
You should be careful
Erm where are the tethers 2 on Amazon there’s These things called landscaping staples
Is there a way where I can do this but in concrete? I recently moved and I don't have a front yard grass like I did before. I have a 10' inflatable Christmas tree.
I had several ideas. You could.using shorter bolts, attach the legs to a square piece of plywood (3ftx3ft) and if this wasn’t heavy enough then place bricks on the plywood. Or you could using his idea, but instead, using short bolts, extend the legs out and put bricks on the longer legs.
Where can I find these steel plates? I tried Amazon but that exact item is not popping up.
Picked them up from the local "big box" hardware store (Home Depot or Lowes)... I used some plates that are meant for tying together the wood beams in construction projects like decks and sheds... stainless steel so there is less of a chance of them rusting.
Where can I purchase the metal plates from already cut like yours?
From your local big box hardware store (the orange one or the blue one). I found these in the section that sells metal braces for decks and carpentry.
Thanks for the info also what size are the nails and bolt.
@@melired15 Honestly not sure? I picked up the metal plates and then went to the bolt section and just found things that fit the holes in the plates. I've done this on several inflatables now and I think I had to drill out the plastic stake holes on the legs of one or two of the inflatables to be sure the bolts would fit through smoothly. I'm a big fan of "use what works for the situation" 🙂
How: stake it down.
There is a thing called tethers comes with it don’t waste your money on metal plates
xII CRAZY Ilx they don’t always work
The stakes and ropes the inflatables come with don't work well. My inflatables never go up by themselves, I always have to go and adjust them at least the 7 feet tall ones. The smaller ones go up OK. Do you have a solution?
@@whatabun Im having the same problem. Any suggestions?
Overkill
The problem is the tethers aren’t on and staked and the clips at the bottom aren’t clipped on at all so don’t waist you’re money doing this 😐
Nah bro your incorrect, my 10ft snowman still blew over with the 4 base stakes and 4 ropes while tied to the other stakes
No voice? Sorry no watch.
Why leave such a useless comment. Just read the text unless you’re illiterate.
The steel plates? What size are they where do I get them?
Exactly
