  • Purchased this motor from club member Roger Melugin at Constantine AOMCI meet in July 2023 as a non runner with mouse damaged ignition wiring. Retrofitted low-tension magneto to universal magneto as I have done two other times and with great success. This motor appears to be quite low hour and will make a nice regular runner for me on my usual boats.

    Just got a 72 20 hp Johnson going, my grandpa bought it new shortly after I graduated. It's been in my dad's basement since the late 80's, my dad had put an electric starter on it for him and it had been overhauled after it got submerged after a storm. Replaced impeller, fuel lines, kill switch wires and cleaned the carb, ready for boat run. Also brought home his 1940 Johnson 5hp and 1926 A-25, appreciate the work you put into these videos.

      Very nice group of motors there. Glad to hear you got the 20hp running. The 72 is the last year of the universal magneto on the 22c.i powerhead. Excellent motors! Thanks for watching!

      Thank you, this is a nice combination. I'm quite happy with the motor and I love having this boat at the cabin. Thanks for watching!

      Nothing like the smell of 2-stroke in the morning! Thanks for watching!

    It’s a beautiful morning there! It’s the same here in southeast Iowa! Light winds and that’s one smooth running 73 20 horse Johnson! I remember we rented a boat that had the same motor on it and the cowling was the same! Really a smooth runner! Happy Labor Day to you as well Ben! Mark in Iowa.

      Glad you are having an equally beautiful morning there, Mark. This is a very nice running motor. I'm very happy with it. This one will be another nice runner in the stable. Thanks for watching!

      It is a lot of fun. 24 feels pretty fast when you're basically sitting on the water. Thanks for watching!

    humming along nicely. Guess I know who to ask if I ever need a low tension mag plate, although I'm not a fan either.

      Thank you. It turned out to be a really nice runner. Yes. If you find yourself in need of a low-tension magneto plate for a 22c.i OMC, I think I can drum up a spare. I might have enough parts to put together one complete Low-tension magneto now that I have done four swaps. The fourth is on a powerhead that needs a new upper crank bearing that I have not gotten back to yet. All of them had some kind of damage or missing parts that led me to just not mess with them and go back to the universal magneto. Thanks for watching!

    I am working on a nineteen seventy three changing over to the universal magneto. I can not get the Magneto to the position to be able to synchronize with the carb roller. The mag hits the neutral safety stop before it gets close to the roller. ANY suggestion?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 10 měsíci

      The throttle cam and the stop bracket with the throttle arm must be swapped over to the universal magneto plate from the low-tension plate for everything to work properly. I find the link and sync marks on these, if used to time the carb pickup as intended, almost always cause a lean sneeze at idle. I always delay the carb pickup until about one roller width later than centered between the marks. This almost always eliminates the sneeze at idle that can't be tuned out with the low speed mixture needle. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks, I use the complete Mag plate and fly wheel from a 1969 and just swapped them over. But never thought about having to change the actual arms on the Magneto plates. Because they have the same size roller for the 69 and the 73. I thought the arms were the same but guess they are not per your advice. Thank you

      @@wesleyboss5763 There is no need to change the flywheel. The dual magnet low-tension flywheel works perfectly with the universal magneto. I only use the plate and the ignition components from the universal magneto. All the parts that attach to the magneto plate get swapped from the low-tension plate so everything that was working together stays working together as it was when original as far as throttle control. If thise parts are the same between the two plates you are using, it should not matter. Mine have always been older. Mid 60s is the newest universal magneto plate I have used to do the conversion.

    Didn't have a get you back litter kicker on this run? Take care my friend.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 10 měsíci

      No, I didn't have anywhere to bring one along to the cabin this trip. I had my oars if needed, and I ran around close to the launch to build a little trust in the motor before I took off miles from home. The backup kicker is nice when I can bring it along though. Thanks for watching!
