  • Ahhhh! Back in the day 1976, Hollywood Stars like Carol Burnett, Clint Eastwood, Mario Andretti and Max Factor toured around Glamping in their FMC luxury motorhome. Only about a thousand of these unique Class A motorhomes were made and we got to tour one at Jack Seismore's RV Museum. We loved it's unique characteristics and the fact that we were sitting in the seats that once carried the likes of Max Factor!

    Great video. I owed a 1975 MC #623, and regret ever having sold it. This motorhome was way ahead of it's time. It was an incredible ride, very stable, very quiet and just a joy to drive. There was no way you could stop to rest and not attract a crowd around this beauty!!!! You failed to mention some of the key features that really made this coach stand out in a crowd. For one thing, it was possibly the ONLY successful rear engine gasoline pusher ever made. It had a hugh radiator that kept that Chrysler 440 marine and industrial engine cool. It was low profile and had 2 central A/C units in it. No roof airs were needed.
    One of the other "futuristic" features was the Thermasan Waste Disposal System. EPA nerds would go ballistic today if this system was still in ezistance, but back in the day, it was quite a system. If you determined your black holding tank was full and needed to be emptied, you merely drove around until the exhaust temperature reached a certain level. A red light would come on at the dash and all you had to do was flip a switch, which activated a macerator pump. The waste would be macerated, then pumped through a nozzle creating a fine mist that would be sprayed on a plate on the hot exhaust manifold. This would literally burn up the waste. It was odorless and very effective. As you drove, you would see the gauge on the black tank go down to "Empty" in short order. Amazing.!!

      OMG, that is crazy! I love it! Thank you so much for sharing the finer points of this rig! I would have been one of kids standing around in the crowd watching, looking and dreaming of what your rig looked like on the inside. You are soooo lucky to have had it and I can see why you regret letting it go. We so appreciate your comment, letting us in on a little more of the magic. Thanks for watching.

      @TheRealCritique I would imagine that the Thermasan systems on existing coaches have died and gone to heaven. My system didn't work well because the macerator was not really functioning well, so I dumped my tanks just like everyone else. Like I said, it was odorless and very effective back in the day.

    I'll tell you something else that was quite unique about the FMC. There was a thermostat that controlled a pump. The pump would activate in cold weather and actually pump some hot water ito the fresh water tank to keep it from freezing. The coach also had a drivers door, which made it very easy to get in or out when you needed to. The video didn't mention that the passengers seat could flip over to face the dinette, and there was a "dash air" in the bedroom.
    The coach was AWESOME!!!!!

    These were made on the same assembly line as the Bradley Tank.

    IMHO, the FMC was the best looking class A RV of the time. The only other motorhomes of the time I'd consider would be the Travco 270 and the GMC Motorhome. It's a shame that they were discontinued when they were.

    • @DoesSizeMatter
      @DoesSizeMatter  Před 5 lety

      Hey there, we love all of these vintage rigs too. It's so amazing how functional these rigs were way back then. The phone/camera handle you are asking about was sort of a mixture of pieces that we were trying to out to see what would be comfortable for us to use while getting the job done at the lowest price point. Since then we have found an actual combo unit that does all of the same functions. Here is a link to our camera gear page where you can see the combo unit as well as the individual pieces and we do talk more about them in the links on that page. koryanddenise.com/2019/04/30/camera-gear-backpack-2/ Hope that helps you out. @@DoesSizeMatter Most RVs today are 35-40' feet in length, maybe even longer than *that!* are as tall as double decker buses (laughs), and weigh in at around 15k lbs. What I've never understood, and therefore don't like, are the slide-outs you see on most modern motorhomes and travel trailers. That's fine if you have more people to travel with. But I would think it would just complicate things, it would add weight to an already heavy vehicle.

    • @DoesSizeMatter
      @DoesSizeMatter  Před 5 lety +1

      As we always say, there is an RV out there that can suit everybody's likes and priorities, depending on what type of travel a person wants to do. The slides provide soooo much more living space that you can still close back up and drive down the road with. So we think they are worth it. But I agree they do add wt and another moving part to maintain. Depending on what your priorities are there are some lighter wt no slide options out there. Are you looking for something specific or do you already own an RV?
