I grew up in an African country where women stay in bed feeding and sleeping with their newborn for 40 days. These cultures have wisdom beyond Westerners who value money & productivity even after childbirth.
They know she is stressed so the community makes it easy for her by keeping her company and feeding her family & her during this time.
She feels less overwhelmed, taken care of/someone's got her back so postpartum complications are reduced. Seems like they understand human psychology much better.

I'm starting to rediscover connection with my fellow humans and my higher power through AA. 7 days sober. I've been watching a lot off this man's speeches and it helps me understand how I became so broken. I'm working to change my ways so that I can have more meaningful and lasting connections. My mind and body are not used to this so I see it as stressful. I never want to drink again. One day at a time.

I live in Australia and was helping an 8 year Sudanese refugee girl with shool work on Saturdays as part of a volunteer group about 10 years ago. Her sister was about 10 months old and she wanted me to hold her, so I held her how I normally hold toddlers but she wasnt impressed almost annoyed😊 she pointed to my heart and at her heart to indicate she wanted to be held on my left side with our hearts touching, wanted me to protrude my hip a little instead of standing straight then wrapped her tiny legs around my waist, then looked into my eyes dmiled as if to say now I feel connected and protected. Im female and I was about 40 years old when this happened, I still remember that moment. I was so focussed on trying teach math but instead got taught by a baby how to actually physically connect.

On the way as we reached the top of the hill, I would point out certain things as we passed them and make the appropriate noises where needed. After being misdiagnosed bipolar, I am off all psychiatric medication. This isn’t a path for everyone and I’m grateful for the medication, it helped me when I needed it most. My daughter developed asthma at infant age. Literally happened in front of eye! While I am begging her father not push me further. Make our life so impossible, the stress pass on our child, I did my best shelter her from what’s going on on my marriage. But he didn’t care or believe whatever I says at the time, he only sees me as villain and anime, as Asian women grow up in our Asian couture. We understand the connection between mother and child at early age, we won’t even leave house first 2 months after baby is born. We always hold the baby and eat and sleep in same circles. As American men don’t seem empathy towards all this delicacy of the early stage of the childbirth and stress of life changes for the women, our body and sense of belonging are shift towards the baby! You attacking the mom is as same as attacking the baby. At least some part of the stress will transfer to the child no matter how strong the mother is!
When mother under threat. Domestic violence, cheating and abuse. How can she complete shelter the baby not feeling the pain and stress as I remember. How demanding the baby was towards the mother, need mother full attention! She was so afraid I leave her. I can’t make any sound. She will wake up and cry. I knew she was affected… I wish there was any other way. I was all by myself and alone. No family or friends can help us. Now we are happy and healthy, she still live with me and we are very close. Her asthma is in control. But still. My guilt aways there. I aways honest and genuine with her and all her questions, and I let her know how I was raised and I am working on myself to be conscious parenting which means I do my best but if I wrong. Please forgive me. Now I am helping her relationship with her father, because I want her to succeed in life and make better choice than I ever could.

It sounds like you are doing what you can to help your daughter to thrive.
Supporting yourself is important too. Don't forgot that you are important too, and that your health also affects your child, yet also enables you to better handle relationship challenges.
Asian and Western cultures have different ways of communicating and showing love, yet ultimately, we still care. Many people are not taught how to effectively communicate across cultures, let alone have healthy relationships. So, it can be very hard.
I'm sure it will work out for you all. Take care.

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by an upsetting event happening in their lives that takes them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. Why are so many people across the world suddenly having their appendix removed? The appendix is associated with “being in fear for one’s life”. The HEALING phase is the rupture/inflammation.

While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes.

Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way.

It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......

I had eating disorders from my teens till my late 40’s. I was DX with ADHD at age 38. DX with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjogren’s at age 42. My baby brother was ‘dual diagnosis’ and died at home in my childhood bedroom when he was 27 years old. I am a support staff for college students seeking help, and read Scattered Minds three weeks ago. The book blew my mind and I am already helping my college students with some of the core takeaways from Scattered Minds- my campus has 14,000 students and I work with MANY of them! I can’t wait to read the Myth of Normal! Everything that Dr. Mate writes, says, and shares, I agree with fully. His messages are a gift to all humans everywhere. Spread the word, friends! Wow Dr. Maté! This is eye opening and explains why 30 years of suppressing my emotions and desperately seeking connection with my ex-husband while keeping it secret resulted in my breast cancer diagnosis (with no family history). It also explains that the stress I endured during my pregnancy from my husband coming home and telling me “he wasn’t happy” while I was pregnant resulted 3 miscarriages and in my son’s asthma (no family history) diagnosis. But there is no one to blame he (ex-husband) was a victim punished as a child for expressing his emotions by his parents. This is the generational curse spoken about in the Bible but this cycle stops with me.

I did not finish listening before I commented on this so this is my second comment. Dr. Mate is so spot-on!! I for one will welcome the change. Let's start changing everything he mentioned at the end. It is amazing how fast the body will heal when given the right conditions of Pure Food and the other components it needs; fresh air, Sunshine, Connection, and love. So communities, societies and Nations, can also heal quickly when the conditions are right. Not every single condition has to be in place before Healing Begins. It is a synergistic process, one change begets another. I am not naive enough to think it will happen overnight but as he said change can happen in a heart and mind with a simple, sincere inquiry into someone's situation. So the same can happen in a home, a community, and a nation. What are we waiting for? It can start with me and you!

May I suggest that people investigate, become educated about, and look to homeopathy for this kind of medical diagnosis and treatment. That is what homeopathic doctors do, well, most of them; homeopathy looks at the entire person, their mental, emotional, spiritual; their history on all levels. They carefully note the person's physical and emotional responses to each remedy. The fact that some people are trying to do away with a proven and efficacious system, she is another evidence of the controlled Madness we're living in. The healing journey starts when the human being dives deep into the "why?".... and once undertaken, although very tough and painful in itself, deep liberation from years of trauma happens to us & our children.

I never get sick and was abused as a kid. So I think there is another angle , in addition to the one presented here where childhood trauma causes physical sickness when older _ it does but not for everybody. ( I think it does when your more nuerotypical and had some good enough parenting,) I had psychopaths for parents. What I figure is that I ran out of cortisol because my mast cells (20000 cells above normal when stressed) mopped up the excess cortisol because it was killing my prefrontal cortex when I was an abandoned baby _ mom went crazy from giving birth and abusive family and abusive neighbours. ( Rosemary baby situation,). When I'm stressed I break out in a rash and I need cortisol cream cause I'm all out of cortisol. The baby abuse shut down my cortisol so my brain wouldnt die - my brain knew it needed to stay alive for me to survive.Everybodies body is different when it comes to stress_ our healings from childhood woundings is a individual journey.

This is so correct in that we have followed a distorted power and money hungry reality. ❤It's stressed us out, broken our connections. I'm following a spiritual journey and no longer a human construct. But, that only could happen because I withdrew from the human construct early as I saw death coming. First, of the soul then of the body which was breaking in front of me completely. My spirit has driven a health and joy regardless of the people being stressed and addicted around me. I want to share my spiritual journey. Peace and love to anyone reading this.❤

I love this video as a scientist, a mother, and a person learning to recognize her own trauma and embarking on my own healing journey. Dr. Mate has a knack for explaining these concepts and making you think about how this applies to you and what lessons can you glean from it. I am listening to "The Myth of Normal" now and it is eye-opening. Thank you for this video!

Gabor Mate reminds me that I am deep complex spiritual being and I can look to that part of me for meaning and purpose instead of the superficial thoughts I have most of the day. It’s more rewarding to go deep and reveal rather than hide behind monotony, mundane physical world. Thanks for this presentation. It’s greatly appreciated 🙏

I think that perspective might be missing the larger point; at least according to Gabor. His point is that too many people are being diagnosed with conditions in order for us to have a functioning society. These conditions are a result of a society that does not meet many people's basic needs, all while society still produces incredible benefits. There are many conflicting qualities within ourselves and society. He starts out the special explaining how he has internal contradictions within himself, and that those dynamics exist in relationships, families, communities, and society as a whole. We use the term Wholehearted, as shorthand for integration or coming together of those conflicting parts. :)

The message I believe is stress is what is making these mental disorders become prevalent, he quotes a Harvard Pediatric Study of Infant’s urine of pregnant mothers during 9/11 were studied and the findings of higher stress hormones such as cortisol are prevalent in these infants and these higher dosages of stress hormones are making people sick.

Dr Mate was my first introduction to facing my childhood trauma and addiction many years ago. I cannot thank him enough for guiding me to that path so I could get a better understanding and begin to heal. The Big takeaway is that there is very little help while on this journey . The medical field prescribes and a decent therapist or rehab centers aren’t practical for someone struggling financially. I am so grateful for Doctor Mate, his books and videos for changing my life . Thank you #wholehearted 🤍🙏
