    On January 24, 1989, promoter Bob Arum announced that Leonard and Hearns would fight on June 12. The contracts were signed at a press conference in New York City on January 31.
    The fight was billed as "The War."
    Leonard was guaranteed $13 million, and Hearns was guaranteed $11 million. Leonard also received 40 percent of the promotional gross over $30 million, and Hearns received 35 percent.
    Leonard was the WBC Super Middleweight Champion, and Hearns was the WBC No. 1-ranked super middleweight contender. Hearns was also the WBO Super Middleweight Champion, but his title was not at stake. Leonard refused to have anything to do with the WBO due to its involvement with fighters from apartheid South Africa.
    Leonard dictated the terms of the rematch, including a reported clause that carried big financial penalties if either fighter weighed more than 164 pounds at the official weigh-in.
    Caesars Palace paid $8 million to host the fight. It took place in an outdoor stadium before a capacity crowd of 15,300.
    The fight was shown live on closed circuit television in 1,600 locations and on pay-per-view, which was available to about nine million homes in the United States.
    On June 8, at the final pre-fight press conference at Caesars Palace, Hearns and Emanuel Steward, his manager and trainer, accused Leonard of taking steroids. Leonard, who had noticeably bulked up for the fight, laughed off the allegation and offered to take a drug test. "It's a joke," said Mike Trainer, Leonard's attorney. "They're throwing it out to stir things up and get some more publicity for the fight."
    The Nevada State Athletic Commission said they had no plans to test either boxer for steroids, although urine tests for other drugs would be taken immediately before the fight.
    Leonard was a 3 to 1 favorite, and the odds were 15 to 1 against the fight ending in a draw. boxrec.com

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
    Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

      Tommy definitely got robbed in this one. Great fight nonetheless. Really in both fights, Tommy matched up really well against Ray. Hears held on in this one, and deserved the win. But he also dominated most of the first fight, then ran out of gas. Have to give Ray credit though too, he showed a huge heart in both fights.

So even though he clearly lost this fight - having been knocked down twice while Hearns was never in very serious trouble, the guys with the microphones liked him- but they knew they couldn't give him the win - even with the tie the crowd was chanting "BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT!"

Hearns was the winner but did not dominate. Also 2 knockdowns doesn't automatically give someone a victory in a closely contested fight such as this. The hitman clearly won this fight, its just that leonard was so overrated and tommy was very underrated fighter....hearns was clearly a legend period.

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican Před 3 lety +1

      Leonard wasn’t overrated at all, and Hearns wasn’t underrated. The problem was that Hearns was great offensively but poor defensively.
      So, while he would score lots of points, he was also an easy target to hit. It is very difficult to score a fighter like Hearns. That’s why he lost the fight.
      Hearns threw and landed the harder shots, but at times, Leonard seemed to out-land him.

      @@DeCurtaRican Bullshit!!!!!! Hearns clearly won this fight. Also, Ray is overrated. This fight and the Hagler fight he got lucky. Also, he was losing the first fight against hearns but cos of his China chin, he lost. Idgaf what the scorecards say about this fight, Hearns should've won this fight.

    how in the hell did one judge score the 12th 10-8 Leonard? that took the win from Hearns, who dominated and I mean dominated the first half of the round

    • @seereeuss
      @seereeuss Před 6 lety +1

      Oh, give me a break. Leonard got robbed of a knockdown score back in the fight when these two were in their prime. And here in this fight, we allowed Tommy to fight like still in his 20s here and dang near 4 pounds heavier than his near-retirement opponent. So it ain't like we didn't do NUTHIN' favorable for Tommy. In fact, we might have done too much for him. The right thing was done here.

      If there’s no knock down then the last round should of been a 10-9 round in favor of Leonard no question. But 10-8 round? Cmon. Straight rip off

    Sugar deserves massive respect for acknowledging that Tommy won this fight. He said Tommy won by "a point or two", and I fully agree with him. This was actually a very close fight, with Sugar winning more individual rounds. The 2nd knockdown was what won the fight for Tommy. Both men are true legends of the sport, and are amongst the greatest boxers to ever live, that's one thing that's beyond dispute.
