- The infamous fight between Henry Cooper and Cassius Clay from 1963. Cassius Clay would be knocked down for only the second time in his career and mystery still surrounds exactly how long did he get to recover in between rounds... More info below
Clay would enter with a record of 18-0, Henry Cooper 27-8-1. Henry Cooper had wanted to face current World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston, but his manager, fearing for his fighters safety against a monster like Liston, would not pursue it. Instead, they accepted the challenge of a young arrogant boxer named Cassius Clay. This was to be Clay's first fight as a pro outside of the United States and his last fight before beating Sonny Liston, becoming World Heavyweight Champion and changing his name to Muhammad Ali. Cassius Clay held little respect for Henry Cooper going into the fight. He claimed Henry a bum, and if he could not beat him in 5 rounds, he would not return to the USA for 30 days. Henry was only a warm up to the brash Cassius Clay. Henry Cooper's record although not great was respectable and he was the reigning Commonwealth and British Heavyweight Champion with 19 of his 27 wins coming by way of KO and most by way of his devastating left hook known as "Enry's ammer". Late in the forth round the young Cassius Clay was floored by the aforementioned punch and saved by the bell ending the round. Although Cassius was able to get to his feet, he was noticeably wobbled and the break between rounds was desperately needed. For Cooper however, it was too little too late. His face a crimson mask, cut wide open from Clay's repeated jabs with a torn glove, the referee had no choice but to end the fight in the following round when Clay turned up the heat. Clay's prediction of a 5th round KO had come to fruition but also a new level of respect for the veteran British boxer, 1 of only 3 men to ever drop Clay/Muhammad in his 61 fight career.
Interesting side note, 3 of the 4 knockdowns Muhammad Ali suffered during his career came by way of a left hook to the jaw... Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper and Joe Frazier. And 3 of those 4 fights in which Ali got knocked down, he went on to win... Chuck Wepner, Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper. - Sport
My late father was Henry's painter and decorator in the 60's, up until Cooper passed away! Dad always said that Henry was a real Gentleman. Henry, Rest In Peace, Sir!
I totally believe that. Henry Cooper scared Ali big time!!
My father met Henry he was indeed a gentleman and could take a joke at his expense without being offended.
Henry came to my school in Matlock Derbyshire,
because I kept sending him letters, I came out of school and he was stood there 😱
he said,hello Billy 😀

Henry Cooper was a real sportsman.
I was talking with my 86 year old neighbour the other day when he casually dropped into the conversation that he sat ring side at this very fight. When cooper knocked Ali down they all thought he’d had him.

12:43 - What an explosive! Left Cooper has! A very good tough Fighter/ Brawler with precision. Its a shame the stopped the fight but really at that moment, Ali had a large advantage hitting him on his bleeding blind side and was not going to stop. The Ref made the wise decision to prolong Coopers fighting career. To bad Cooper skin cuts so easily, yet he should be entered into the boxers hall of fame.
If it hadn't been for his unfortunate ability to cut so easy Henry might have been a World Champion.
My mom (a Cockney Brit) and my dad (an Ohio Yank) nearly divorced over this fight. It remained a flashpoint for the life of their 51 years of marriage until they both passed away. Gotta love sport.
Oh man, but the reconciliation mustve been as good as the fights... 😉
Two mobile, skilled aggressive warriors showing mutual respect and maturity. That’s boxing.
In spite of bleeding, Cooper did not want to leave the ring. How courageous he was.
He was always known for being a heavy bleeder. Was the bane of his career.
Had they not stopped the fight, Cooper most likely would have knocked Clay out
@@Smartguy561 I met Clay around 32 years ago back home in Rasht my hometown, He was accompanied to a boxing club then they took him to a local mosque to pray
Precedentemente, oltre a Marciano inserirei J.Lewis e Liston.

I have never seen this fight before! "CLASSIC"
What a great fight by two great boxers . Makes me smile when I watch these fights . Never forgotten . So much better than the dross that we served up today .
It's amazing to me the improvement Clay made and also his physical development between this fight and the Liston fight. The guy who fought Cooper would not have beaten Liston. But he matured a lot in the 5 months between the two fights. Incredible.
Indeed. Looked very beatable in his 10 rounder against Doug Jones too in his previous fight.
He had obviously trained out of his skin for Liston.
Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters.
In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.'
Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.
Let's be honest Liston took a dive in both fights.and Clay/Ali. Was not the greatest heavyweight. But he was the greatest entertainer outside the ring
@@ianr9898 I don't really buy that Liston bagged the first fight. I think he undertrained and believed all the hype of his invincibility. Clay basically kicked his ass and Sonny was humiliated and embarrassed--so he quit. Similar to 'No mas', in a way. The second fight was a different story. He definitely went 'in the tank'. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story...
@@dspreis The mob owned Liston. They had big money on Clay.and told him to take the dive. They also assassinated him later
For twenty years Ali was an artist.
He floated, danced and out boxed
every opponent. No one has ever
shown the finesse, the style that
was Ali. No one ever will.
He also ate so much leather that it ruined him for his last 20 years of life. The man was great but others have been on his level and will be in the future.
Lennox Lewis was the complete heavyweight.
@Dillon Mcconnell The unbeaten Michael Grant and Akinwande were both bigger than Lewis, Lewis effectively finished their careers. Lewis was old fat and ring rusty and still destroyed Klitschko's face, and many forget he won the last round and took the Ukraine's legs with the last uppercut.
Marciano would have crushed Ali.
@Dillon Mcconnell 😂
That left nearly lifted clay off of the ground. No better example of being saved by the bell. That was a perfect punch, right on the button.

Werner,
I was in the service at this time and this is the first time I’ve seen this fight and that knock down. Cooper was impressive and I’m sure I would have cheered for Clay because we were both the same age and from Louisville.
The fact that a guy like Cooper was a 3rd tier Heavyweight in that mid 60s-mid 70s era shows just how incredible the sport was in those days.

8:48 - 9:58 Ali didn't throw a single punch & was simply dancing against the bleeding Cooper for him to get the break time. Ali was all heart to the ferocious Cooper.👏👏
I don't know about that. Looks more like he's taunting him. Good boxers will let the other guy wear himself out swinging and missing. It's likely a precursor to the Rope a Dope. Make no mistake, both men are in that ring to win. There's no charity.
No Ali was stalling for time because he wanted to make good on his prediction to beat Cooper in the fifth round, playing around like that not a good idea because Ali got floored, in the third round when he was playing he should have been real serious and go ahead and get Cooper out of there
@@youtoo2233 I could believe that. He didn't want to end it too soon or his "prediction" would not be true. As you say, goofing off in the ring is never a good idea. I've see it backfire wayyyy too many times.
@@youtoo2233 ..."Almost" doesn't cut it! PERIOD!!!
@@danroberts9050 yeah Ali played around in a lot of fights in the 70's and lost sometimes because of it. It hurt him in the scoring
I met Ali ..he was giving autographs on the corner of 45th and Lexington Manhattan NYC summer of 1983. 😊
I had the opportunity to meet with Sir Henry a few years ago, great guy and he also enjoyed his football. I asked him about the fight with Cassius but he was very pragmatic about it, 'that's boxing' he said.
Just watched with my 12y old son. Cooper was a great fighter indeed, old school, hard man. Boxing was classic back then.
I was a child when this happened. I remember it happening but had forgotten that Cooper knocked him down -- and a major league slug it was! Clay was lucky to walk away with the "W." Classic!!
Yeah. Lucky for Clay that Cooper's eye just became a bloody, swollen mess for no reason whatsoever. Otherwise Cooper would've won easily.
@@crashburn3292 Winning easily vs argueably best heavyweight of all times? Ali opened his eyes with his jabs, there is no luck here, Cooper was also getting tired, he was so aggressive in early rounds, it's Ali's fight style, he didn't come aggressive looking for an early Ko like Tyson or Foreman
@@MuhammadAli-kg7ij Yes ! i was 13 back then
@@crashburn3292 he wouldn't have won easily. Clay came out like a bull in the 5th. He hit Cooper with a lot more punches in the 5th than he did in the first 4 rounds. Clay was boxing and toying with Cooper in the first 4 rounds. You can go back and look in the 3rd round he was teasing Cooper, and the announcer said he was ungentlemanly. He was gettin in his head. Cooper's lucky Clay hit em in the face so much and got his eye gushin. The ref stopped the fight to save Cooper gettin knocked out. You can say what you want, but there wasn't nothin easy about this fight. They both boxed well, and had a great fight, but Clay came on strong in the 5th. That knock down got em motivated in a major way, and you could see play time was over.
I just went back and watched the 5th round again and counted the punches. Clay threw about 37 punches to Cooper's 6 punches. And Clay landed almost every one and Cooper didn't land any. It was about a minute and a half in the 5th round before the ref stopped the fight, and clay landed about 35 punches and Cooper didn't land one punch. I'm tellin you, the ref could see what was comin, and he stopped the fight to save Cooper from gettin knocked out!!!
@@crashburn3292 No reason whatsoever? When you get punched in the face from a 210 lb professional fighter, puffiness and bleeding may result, in some people than others, and Henry WAS a bleeder.

Great fight , you can see Ali was still struggling with the overhand right but footwork and movement very good he was just coming into his own .

That must have been something to have seen live. I really never knew this fight was that good, until I watched it here. It was a true slug fest.
But at that time was young Cassius Clay as famous the GOAT Muhammad Ali of 1964 Sonny Liston or 1974 of Foreman ( ZAIRE today RDC ? )
First fight I ever saw, and don't think I've missed a heavyweight fight ever since. We all rave about Ali, Tyson, and Lewis, but a man who never got the credit he deserved was Larry Holmes. I rate him right up with those guys.

This was a great fight! It’s ashamed it couldn’t go on because of the cut
What most people never appreciate was that Cooper wasn't really a heavyweight by today's standard. He only fought at around 13 stone or around 182 lbs, so he packed quite a wallop for his weight.
I think he came in at 189 for this fight. He was a plasterer by trade and had an inordinate amount of natural strength in his left arm and shoulder. Ali said that no one hit him harder.
@@jednatkin9959 That was second fight. First fight he weighed 185 1/2 lb according to boxrec
You're so right, I couldn't have put your comment any better.
I'd give him a good chance against. MARCIANO
And he actually won. You think Cooper coulda done that to prime Tyson ? No way!
Cooper's cut changed the dynamics of the fight. Up to that point, he had the edge and was getting the better of the exchanges. He never got enough credit for his ring craft. He had a good reach, decent jab and lethal left hook, with a solid amateur background. There was no doubt Ali was the greatest of his generation, but during his prime, no one gave him a stiffer test than Copper. RIP two timeless legends!
Cooper was in amazing shape too. I watched this fight on live TV, and as an American kid rooting for Ali, I didn't think he was going to beat Cooper that night.
Cooper got cut up...Good thing the ref had enough sense to stop the fight, otherwise Cooper's face would have been pulverized more...Other white men have boxed Black boxers and tried to prove they can take a punch with the same exact outcome 🤣Isn't the object is to not get hit?🤣🤣🤣
White guys bleed 🩸 It was a shame. Yeh he was all in it before that.
@@jagginit : Seriously? You're bringing race into it? Twat!
I thought Cooper was going to knock him out with his left hook but Ali made it back to his corner but barely.
Wow! First time watching this. Saved by the bell?
Henry Cooper fought so well against Ali ( 'Clay'), better than most any other fighters ever did at that point in his career..
Ali's movement & balance were off that fight. Was more arm punching than setting down on his shots using his hips where the torque & power base generate. Cooper's striking was the opposite..angry intentions w every punch. Ali's legs & hands weren't in synch to punch w any serious power behind them. He definitely got much better. He was still so green back then
Never heard of this fight... and as an amateur boxer Ali was my " hero". Cooper had a devastating left, counted on it too much though. I got a see more Cooper ! He was a fighter! Ali Bumaye !! RIP.. to them.

He suffered badly with cuts but his boxing skills were up there
Had Cooper got a chance to challenge the champ Sonny Liston before Ali did the following year, he would have had a great chance to beat Liston, who was in decline at this time (1964). Internationally Cooper was/is very much underrated. Unfortunately he got cut so easily and therefore lost some important fights, he otherwise could have won, at least on points.
