    Poor Man's AutoPilot w/ BMW Traffic Jam Assist
    Things you'll need:
    1. An i3 that already has the ability to do self-parking and adaptive cruise control
    2. Dongle from quidzel.com/
    google around for the links as they seem to have moved or hire someone to do this for you.
    3. E-Sys software -
    4. PSdZDATA (Lite) Files for ESYS: dead links - sorry
    Like I mentioned, if you're not comfortable doing this, find a local bmw shop to do this for you
    Reminder: TJA won't work unless a number of conditions are satisfied. Car in front of you for the system to track, good lane markings (passing through an intersection will disengage the system) and must be going below the minimum speed for the system.
    Good Luck! Have Fun!
    Dongle I use: amzn.to/2XExAOS

  • @DaveDarin
    @DaveDarin Před rokem +1

    I am going to assume that the lane departure would require the car to have mounted side cams. The models that have the self parking and have the side cams to enable that feature are probably the cars that would dolmen departure assist. Without those cams I am assuming it won't work. I drive a 2020 BMW i3s and the extended fenders eliminated the side coms so none of the i3s models can do self parking. So, the project you worked on could probably do the what's called adaptive cruise control but in my case it won't do lane departure. My car actually does have adaptive cruise control so this would not get me anywhere.

      I wouldn't. It would pinball between the two lane markings and be too jerky. I don't think they ever planned or designed it for those speeds, both the software and the power steering hardware. As it is, most of my driving is on straight stretches and I disengage over 45mph. Hope that helps.

    Very cool! A few questions: Can you still enable ACC alone or does this replace it? What happens if you increase the desired speed above 40 (or 45, whatever the limit is for TJA)? Does it switch to ACC at that point, or turn off? Also, how do you enable it in the first place? Thanks for the info. Very interested in this!

    • @JuliansRandomProject
      @JuliansRandomProject  Před 5 lety +4

      ACC can be used like normal, TJA (lane keeping at lower speed) just when you want it. Above the mph set point it drops lane keeping and continues with ACC only. It's enabled by pressing the button that used to increase the distance to car in front of you while using ACC. Now the 'get closer' button round robins to the following distance you'd like. Hope that helps.

      Not the software tweaks but the lane keeping dongle featured will most likely void your warranty for anything related to its addition. Best to wait until your warranty expires.

    Very cool! Yes, I would be quite litigious if someone was over confident -- yet incompetent-- modifying their vehicle to bypass a safety feature, especially if I'm in a priceless classic car and get severely injured. It does seem like a fantastic feature for interstate stop-and-go nuisance situations. Thanks for the videos, cheers!!

    ironic that you are talking about auto pilot and pass a Tesla at 4:20 lol. And another Tesla at 6:21 Nice work installing. Might be installing this too on mine.
    Does your car have the front sensors in the bumber to do this? Because mine does not.

    • @JuliansRandomProject
      @JuliansRandomProject  Před 5 lety

      Throw a rock and you'll hit a Tesla in the Bay Area :) I've got the camera in the windshield, sensors in the bumper are ultrasonic and just used for parking in the i3. Can you do adaptive cruise control and self parking in your i3? Rex or BEV?

    • @CordlessReview
      @CordlessReview Před 5 lety

      I have the adaptive cruise control but not the parking. I have the REX

    What is the point of such system limited to 60km/h???
    Also, AP does do more than just what you explained. And an i3 is actually more expensive than a Tesla so kind of funny title!

      New, yes, but not used. I got mine with 15k mi for $22k, Rex, in mint condition, every option available. So far it's been an amazing value.

      @@CrAzYDr1veR Here in The States, the public is unsure about the car being electric and it's expensive when bought new. So sales of used i3s are slow and the price reflects that. A new one can go for $58,000 USD.... 2 years later it's sold for $17k

      In the UK you can pick up a 2015 i3 for as little as £12,000 ($15,800 USD)

      In US they are really cheap. In Germany I still paid half of the price of a new one for a three year old, which was 26k EUR. Nevertheless I like the car very much.

    Tesla autopilot does FAR more than this. it monitors road and traffic conditions all around, reads street signs, and it IS capable of self driving (it's just turned off right now for our market). The TESLA BETA that sales is currently testing is actually full GPS location setting, and complete self driving to that destination. I like the I3 as well, but you're kidding yourself if you think you have 40% of autopilot's functionality. And you are definitely wrong in your description of what autopilot is.

    • @toestor
      @toestor Před 3 lety

      Show us where you can buy a Tesla for $17k that does all you list above? Note that you wrote your comment a year after this was first published, and that Tesla's AP was much less capable then as well. BMW's camera could read speed limit signs, which Tesla couldn't do for the longest time (they were just using GPS/map info, and that was often wrong; whenever there is road construction, e.g.). You can certainly argue over percentages of capabilities, but if you purely look at the use case described ("autopilot" in stop-and go traffic"), what "FAR more" is Tesla proving in terms of that experience?

    • @JuliansRandomProject
      @JuliansRandomProject  Před 5 lety +5

      If you spent $58,000 on one of these cars, 300 is a small part of your world. If you just picked a used i3 for $15,000... it's the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade one can do.
