I learned this the hard way! I would put leaf propagations in the same pot and constantly be watering my leaf propagation and then wonder why my bigger ones were getting root rot when the bottom of the pot was completely dry and I figured it out it was because I was watering the leaf propagations a little bit here and there!
I used to be so afraid to soak them completely in water like you do but since I started watering like that I have occasionally had one or two problems but I chalk that up to the plant just being a weak/bad plant. Especially if it's in a pot with multiple other of the same succulent and those are fine. And let me tell you, my roots are so Lush and healthy since I've started soaking them instead of just top watering.

Liz, I am a subscriber from Lake Charles, LA (approx. 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico), but I think this is the first time I've gotten a good look at the vastness of your collection. Wow! They think I've got a lot and I only have five!
Anyhow, I have a Echeveria Perle von Nurnberg that dropped a few leaves after I overwatered it early last fall (the end of September) and I suspect it suffered a bit outside in a terra cotta pot when it got in the thirties last week (Jan., 2022) and I wasn't able to get to it and move it inside for the night. The central cluster of new growth on the top looks OK, so now that I can properly tend to it, it should survive the rest of the winter. Thanks for your great channel. I use it for the good information you provide. Back in the nineties, I didn't have the luxury of a computer, so I had to either buy books or got to a library. Sometime the specific information wasn't that easy to find, either. Thanks again for all the great info.
You have the ideal weather for growing succulents. The coldest my succulents(PVN) have experienced is -11°C/12.2°F. I grow my PVN outside and during winter, they have experience being frozen solid and still managed to survive.
However, I want to make note of having them acclimatized first when I got them from the shops. Spring is the perfect time to acquire them and grow out through summer, autumn and by winter....they've all hardened and have survived our winter frost much better.

From my experience succulents are the most problematic for me. I have carnivorous plants who are doing well and cactus who are doing well but my aloe and succulent are just a mess.
Oh my gosh I can only imagine how big your collection would be if you were in the US. The succulents here thankfully wouldn’t be that high. Especially this echeveria rainbow

I just found your channel and I love your work! I am struggling with my succulents, I feel like I’m doing everything right, water when dry ect. But I’m having a lot of leaf drop. No bugs they aren’t burnt but the leafs are dropping 🥺 any advice?
It can be a number of issues. Most of the plants we acquire or sold nowadays are grown in nurseries where they are quickly mass produced to be sold as disposable plants. This is quite a broad topic with regards to "Why they drop their leaves." Some Tissue cultured plants I find tends to either rot or drop their leaves off easily. I find that buying plants grown close to your area makes for stronger plants since they've already adapted to their environment. This plant is a good example of why it drops it's leaves as well. I've grown this inside under a grow light and move it outside open to the element. The change of growing condition is one reason the plant in this video dropped their leaves off. Hope this helps.
I just started growing succulents last Summer. I have several that have given some great pups and has kept me excited for warmer weather. I do have one question that I have not been able to find an answer for. I was hoping you could help. Maybe I'm just not asking the question correctly. If I have a plant that seems to be root bound, I'm reading I should cut 1 inch off of the roots from the bottom of the planter. If I do this, can replant those roots I cut off and have a successful propagation with that as well? Thank you so much for your videos.
First of all, depends on the plant. Some are summer dormant and others winter dormant. If the plant is actively growing...that's the best time to repot or cut. You can either chop off the top growth and leave at least an inch of stem or you can also tease the roots and remove some roots and repot. Good luck!
Hi Miss Liz, thank you for all your informative videos. I'm a little bit confused on this part. Actually I'm from a tropical country with over 70% humidity and when it rains, even if my succulents are inside, they tend to rot. It once happened to a leaf pup too which I kept in an empty saucer with no soil at all. Afraid of that what I do sometimes is, not water the succulents at all. Also my understanding is rot happens when there's too much water, but in your video I see you remove the rotten leaves after the rain and then go ahead with watering. It would be very kind of you if you could help me on this. Thanks 😊
West Rainbow is a very picky plant. This plant prefers the cool temperature and go dormant in summer. 10 to 25°C is it's ideal growing temperature. In the tropics, when temperature are above 25°C, it's best to keep them on the dry side and not water. When temperature starts to go below 20°C, that's when to fertilize and water them by soaking the whole pot overnight. Drain and water again when soil dries out. Wish you all the best.

LOL.....Soil mix. Once you get it right, they can look after themselves in any weather except snow of course.

Hi Liz, thank you for this video! It happened this morning to my only e. compton carousel, I touched it and it dropped a whole bunch of leaves on one side. Now it's soaking, let's hope for the best!!! All the dropped leaves are healthy I kept them for prop, do you think it's possible to prop the leaves? I have had no luck so far with his one.... :(
I don't have a comptom carousel and heard from a few friends that they are quite a diva plant. I'm not buying any until the price goes down as it's still expensive here in Australia.
Hi Liz, i started loving succulent after watching ur videos. Tq alot. But may i know how frequent shud we "heavy watering" our plant? I live in malaysia. It is quite hot at this time if the year.
I only water(soak) when the soil is dry and the pot is light or if the plants are showing signs of needing watering (soft leaves). I never water(as much as possible) when the temperature is above 30°C as this will cook them. This is all depends on your pot as well. Yes but you also need to give the plant a break and have plain water in between to wash off any bad stuff in the soil.

I have a different leaf falling off problem...whenever I transplant, leaves always get reabsorbed...am I being too rough on the roots? Should I put fertilizer in the soil?
You probably need to change their soil. Once you see the first bit of root, try growing them on COCONUT PEAT first. Just put it on top(don't dig them in) and let the roots go into the moist COCO PEAT. You'll soon be able to tell if they like the coco peat. Root growing out means they need water. Roots going down into the cocopeat means you have enough moisture for them to reach down. Once they're grown, you can transplant them to your soil. Make two different mixture to see which one they prefer. Good luck.

I water when they need it. If the leaves starts falling off on PVN, mean they are thirsty and had not been watered enough. They also like a lot of bright light. Can be grown out in the garden and grows faster.

Not sure if they are over dry cos I do water ever 7 to 10 days when soil is dry?
You should only water when the pot is light or the leaves are looking sad. Touch and if it feels soft, I usually give them a good soak then put them away depending on the size of the pot, sometimes a couple of months before they get a soaking again. My West Rainbow did not have a soaking since(2 months ago) I planted them in this pot.

I have the same plant po. I have a questions please. Should I keep it indoor when the roots still not stable? I only water when it’s dry and also dropping leaves and have black marks on the leaves . Last time I water I bottom watered it . Still look weak. Salamat po

It’s been about a month po. Yes it’s a new plant it’s a large single head with roots po. A week 2 weeks ago started to drop leaves then I don’t know what to do . No rots no pest . Hi Liz!!! I love your content. I have two questions for you regarding soaking dehydrated succulents in Seasol until their leaves are plump and full again:
1.) If a succulent is taking longer than 24 hours to get full and plump again, do you ensure the plant has exposure to sunlight during the day while it’s soaking or is it shaded, bright indirect light? I know you’ve said you soaked a topsy turvy up to 20 days before. I was wondering how their photosynthesis was affected while soaking and if they need sunlight if it’s an extended period of time. I’m growing some of mine inside under grow lights and I’ve been soaking a few of them in the bathtub haha and some of them are taking longer than 24 hours to plump up again. (No sunlight really in bathroom) I’m wondering if I need to move them outside while soaking or move a grow light in there.
2.) Seasol manufacturer recommends to use a diluted solution within 24 hours after preparation. Do you remake a new solution every 24 hours for your succulents that are soaking longer than a day? (Sounds very cumbersome but I did leave a bowl of solution out one time and it got moldy very quickly)

Q1.) I have some succulents soaking in my laundry room(no light) at the moment and some are in the seaweed solution for 5 days already. Once plump up, I put them in a bright shady area to acclimatize again or alternatively, I put straight under my grow light.
Q2.) I never change my seaweed solution. I just keep topping it up when it gets low. So far, I have never experienced mold. Mold is a fungus and the spores will have to be on the pot or the plant to get activated. I suggest changing the solution when this happens.

2.) Are there any varieties you’ve found that take exceptionally longer than others to plump? I can assume obviously that thicker leaves or larger plant could equal longer soaking. But have you found that some drink much faster than others?

I know this is a yr ago...but I'm confused. You don't want rain on them? But soak them when bone dry....but won't they rot if to wet? Where did you get the tester for soil?
Most of the information I share in my videos will still be applicable even many years later.
Tester for soil came from my local hardware store here in Australia. Plant nurseries have them and also online.
Because of their thick leaves, succulents can store water both from the roots and the leaves. Although succulents can survive without water for a long time, they need to absorb water through the roots just like a lot of other plants. If they absorb water through the leaves, they can rot. This is why they prefer for the soil to dry out first before a good soaking/watering. If the roots are hydrated, no need for the leaves to try and absorb water as well and rot because it already has enough water stored. Hope that make sense. Thanks for watching.
What is that dark liquid ? Soil wetter? Is that humic acid ?
Seaweed Soil Wetter and Conditioner is a wetting agent boosted with liquid seaweed and liquid compost to increase the wettability of hard to wet soils, allowing deeper penetration of water into the root zone.
Do those pots all have drainage holes or are they able to absorb the water through the clay while they soak over night? I'm having a hard time finding pots with drainage holes and don't know how to make sure they aren't retaining water. I put pebbles at the bottom of the pot and the dirt on top, but not sure that's good enough.
They have to have drainage holes even the terracotta pots.
Winter's been rough on my indoor succulents. I've been soaking many in water as well. What does the Soil Wetter agent do? Thank you!
If soil is left dry for a long time, it will become hydrophobic and won't be able to absorb water. When you water your pot plants, the soil will just sit there or run off on the sides of the pot and doesn't get absorbed by the plant eventually killing your plants. What soil wetter does is improve the water penetration by conditioning the soil maximizing nutrient absorption by the plant roots.

My crassula ovata is properly watered and has a proper soil mix, but one of the stems/branches is shriveled and is a darker color. Help!!!

I not sure about my succulents problem. I watering my succulents when the soil dry. But why the succulents leaves still look soft laggy not firm 😢

If they're soft, I normally leave them soaking for days until it plumps up. If left in their soft state, they will eventually die. Better to be brave and give them a chance to life. Good luck!
What brand moisture meter do you recommend? I haven't found one that will register on amazon.
I use a generic No Name brand from my local hardware store that I hardly use anymore. Best water gauge for me is to lift the pot. If it feels light, I water/soak. If heavy, I don't water. Also, good practice to use the bottom leaves to check for moisture content. If it looks soft, I soak the whole pot.
Wen ur growing babies from the mother leaves...do they need sun or kool areas...is it fine to be in the house to grow babies,,and if so do they need a dry bright area...Or is it ok to be in a kool area????
Dry, cool and bright area is preferred. Indoors or outdoors is fine. They can grow where the mommy plant was but if it's in the sun, they take longer to germinate.
My succulents always die. I water them when they are dry they have a drainage hole they get sunlite they are in a bright area what to do
The soil mix is the most important factor in growing succulents. If you find the right one to suit your area or growing condition, then the plants can "almost" look after themselves.

How long do you have to wait until you water them again
One can't set a definite time because it all depends on the area that you live in, humidity, size of the pot, position and how quickly the soil dries up. I always water when the soil dries up or when the bottom leaves show sign of needing watering or if the pot is lighter than usual.
How do you keep your terracotta pots so pretty? Mine start getting white patches when I wet them ☹️
Mine does the same. Some do and some don't. They can be scrubbed off easily.

Can we water thirsty succulents in the winter? And live them all night long?
If the temperature inside is constant and not below freezing, you can soak a thirsty succulent overnight or however long it takes to plump up. Below is a video of a succulents that I soak indoors for many days.

Is soil wetter in Australia like root hormone in liquid form ?
No it's not a rooting hormone. As the name suggest, it's to wet the soil. Australia experiences a lot of drought and so necessitate for a soil wetter product to break down the dry soil. Thanks for watching.

I only use my grow light for propagating a few succulents. Most of my plants I leave outside during rainy season here as shown in my many other rainy videos.

Because the tray is quite shallow. I cut out the first one and secure the sides so I can build height to put my soil in.

Leaves falling in succulents are mostly a sign of underwatering. This is the plants way of kicking the older leaves to give the nutrients to the new leaves. When a succulent have too much water, the leaves shows signs of bursting from too much liquid.

Check your other plants for infestation and kill the worms.
If i find the worms and i kill them.. should i change the soil?
@@ummahnayla1675 Depends on the worm. Some worms are just on the leaves and burrow through the plant roots. I usually just break off the stem and pull the worm out with a tweezer and check for eggs and put the broken plant back "ON" the pot to grow roots them put it in the soil when they finally have root. If its another type of worm, then it's up to you to decide whether to change the soil or not.
I will check all my succulents i dont know it is because the rain or something else because here allways raining for a weeks... the worms ( tiny white ) is eating the roots only .. i dont see them in the leaves.. i will check all my succulents and change the soil.. i will make your recipes of tropical soil mix .. hope they will survive..

Leaves falling off is usually a sign that the roots are not getting enough water so the plant sheds it's leaves to conserve energy for the other top leaves.

Actually Engine oil is called mobil in india .
We also have Mobil engine oil here but yes, you can also use SEAWEED and COMPOST liquid solution or grass or lawn wetter. It's the same thing. Just succulent soil lubricant.
