Another great video Donato. I’m running Auckland on Sunday. Hoping for my first sub 4. I’m planning on shadowing the pacer the whole way. I’ll be taking gels, but I don’t like them. Sugar is not my friend. I’m going to investigate some fat based ones moving forward. If anyone in these comments has any info or recommendations, please let me know.

Steve Scott good luck Steve on your Auckland marathon at weekend. I’m the same with sugar, hence only 3 gels. There is a theory of being “fat adapted” and not needing any sugar/gels during a marathon, but a lot of dependencies to get to that level. Go VERY easy on first half and then fly past the pacers after mile 20 😎

Probably too late for you to alter your plan, but I believe my issues are with the gels/chews themselves and the types/amounts of sugars in them. I had an issue this past Sunday at the Chicago Marathon after my second set of chews. Luckily, a couple miles later, someone had some orange slices on the course and that helped me bounce back. So, I'm going to look into some more natural fueling solutions for my next race. I might also try dried fruit. This article I found seems worth a try in case you're curious: www.active.com/cycling/articles/how-to-make-your-own-energy-gel?page=2

@@bigjoe5411 some valid points Joseph. A lot also depends on the pace you are running that can help/hinder types of nutrition we can take on board. I tried chews a few years back and just found them awkward in my mouth for so long. Lots of people rave about tailwind.

@@PoetWithPace That's interesting about pace hindering nutrition. I hadn't truly considered that, but makes sense.
Tailwind seems promising. Thanks for the suggestion.

@@PoetWithPace Thanks Donato - mile 20 is where my legs normally detach, but we'll give it a whirl.

My daughter asked me to pace her to a set PR in her half M (Toronto waterfront M ) on Sunday, so chuffed about it.

Congratulations on getting into London, my wife also got a place so I'm going to have fun training her. I agree with you, the most important part is getting to the start line feeling good.

Well done on your marathon Donato. I totally agree with you, I had read the website before the race, which said something like "pretty flat course...you can expect a PB", I had also watched the videos with the pacers talking about the course. Finally, more than the up hills, that's the downhills that destroyed my quads... I equal the PB (not to say I miss it for 17 seconds, still in the same minute, in 3:28 haha) and I was happy with that. If I had known I would have worked a bit more on specific workouts (up hills and downhills) Congrats again for your race, it's great to follow your running adventures. For me next target race will be Manchester Marathon 2020 (I have checked everything, this one is fast and flat haha). All the best for your future races.

Thibault Poujol thank you so much for your comment and appreciate you watching this. We live and learn don’t we and what advice we should listen to. You may of seen my Manchester Marathon video, it is flat and fast with one hill in the middle. As you say the downhills smash our quads 🙀 .... good luck with your training and I hope to be at Manchester next year to film again 👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you for the vid Sir! It's always good to hear another's perspective on how their marathon went. I learn allot from guys like you. Slowing down for the first half is probably number 1 for me. Congrats on the London bib!

The Carters thank you for watching! Indeed we could all with going slower at start. Very much a fine line when racing with just 10 or 15 seconds per mile making a big difference. Hopefully it all helps 👍🏼

Wow! London Marathon way to go Donato, I like your positive attitude, it’s very hard to do a Pb time when you’ve been injured weeks before, because at the time when u meant to be doing some of your fast pace workouts you are busy looking after the injury stretching Swiming etc, I had a knee injury about 3 weeks ago did some bike rides & swims but still feel nowhere close to the fitness if I didn’t have the injury, got a half marathon on Sunday oct the 20th, thanks Donato 👏

Thanks Donato. Chester isn’t flat despite was some would have us believe. This is complete nonsense.
It is however a fast course if you tackle it right.
Nutrition during a race is still a thorny issue for me personally. I often will have a gel and High 5 tablet (in my water) directly before the race, and then just rely on water stations. If conditions are cool or chilly I obviously take on much less water. At Palma Marathon on Sunday the heat was intense so I had no option but to stop at virtually every water station. It was a very tough run.
At Yorkshire Marathon last year I didn’t have any water at all. It’s not something I would endorse so please don’t try this at home, kids.
My next race is Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday. I run all my races entirely
on feel - Sunday will be no different.
Noticed you mentioned in the Birmingham Great Run video that you are at Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday. I assumed you were there to run it.
Anyway, hope you have an enjoyable weekend. Maybe see you there.

MrCol104 thank you Col. indeed not flat at Chester. The website appears to have been updated now 🙀 .... nutrition during a race is personal to everyone and as you say depends on weather and terrain/profile. Hopefully see you and your bro on Sunday. I will be at the start 👍🏼
