  • Bernie Taupin on his new book 'Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton and Me'.
    GET THE BOOK: amzn.to/46V6kyM
Scattershot is the memoir music fans have been waiting for. Half of one of the greatest creative partnerships in popular music, Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics for Elton John, who conceived the ideas that spawned countless hits, and sold millions and millions of records. Together, they were a duo, a unit, an immovable object. Their extraordinary, half-century-and-counting creative relationship has been chronicled in biopics (like 2019's Rocketman) and even John's own autobiography, Me. But Taupin, a famously private person, has kept his own account of their adventures close to his chest, until now.
Written with honesty and candour, Scatterhot allows the reader to witness events unfolding from Taupin's singular perspective, sometimes front and center, sometimes from the edge, yet always described vibrantly, with an infectious energy that only a vivid songwriter's prose could offer. From his childhood in the East Midlands of England whose imagination was sparked and forever informed by the distinctly American mythopoetics of country music and cowboys, to the glittering, star-studded fishbowl of '70s and '80s Beverly Hills, Scattershot is simultaneously a Tom Jones-like picaresque journey across a landscape of unforgettable characters, as well as a striking, first-hand account of a creative era like no other and one man's experience at the core of it.

There is a lot of great music that is being created by younger artist but the problem is you will not find it in mainstream popular music or the current charts. The ones I have found by going the indie route have done alright in releasing their music and developing a fan base by playing smaller venues but they don't have the big music business machine behind them so they are not as popular as I think they deserve to be. I do my own independent music research and I have found many such artist who are amazing. Michael Kiwanuka is one of them.

I bought your book and enjoyed most of it as I was in bands in the U,K. in your generation. You have always come across as an interesting but mysterious character. The bit at the end of your recent book I disliked was your involvement in your own Art….You could have at least changed your name. Us struggling artist have no Silver Spoon.

Great! The first interview with Bernie, without some sort of baseball cap on his head. I have observed that an old man in a baseball cap always comes across as far dimmer and dumber than he actually is.
