  • While trying to clear the family property I decided it was time for the trans am to go. No one would dare touch it the way it sat. So I do my best to piece it back together This was filmed in 2020 but much of the footage was lost. Here’s what I pieced together from that day.

I was lucky enough to find a hidden junk yard when I owned a 301 powered 79 SE Firebird...power windows were the only option..I was able to turn it into a 78 Trans am clone with all the WS6 components...It was kinda the best of many years all put together... Functioning Ram Air hood, 160 mph gauge cluster, 81 disc brakes, a 428 out a wrecked 68 Pontiac ambulance with 37,000 miles..it turned out to be a unique and very fast car..the owner of the property had probably 50 old birds from 70-81 and was practically giving me the stuff..I was a broke 30 year old mechanic and because of this old fellow, I was able to build my dream car..

Glad you got it out of those woods, I just don't understand why people let cars like that sit and get in that condition. I have a 1978 with a 400 in show condition. I would never let my car get in that condition. As long as I own it! But great job getting out, it deserves to have a second chance or help another TA help a second chance. 👍

Until someone grows up and is constantly working with a family to feed and they get injured and the car has to sit, when they come back its in worse condition and they just keep staring at it in disgust not even wanting to drive it anymore. I've been there only once with my 96 crown vic. I tried doing a valve cover job to it and in the 92-97 years of the crown vic, the engine is pushed back further and is hard to get to. They fixed that with the new year models of crown vics everyone wants. And it took me 3 days just to try and get it to seal and we tried everything, constantly getting the wrong parts from the auto place. Ended up cutting the fuck out of the gasket we got from the auto shop and gluing it together just to get It to fit. After i fixed it and the car was back to running i just started to lose interest in the car. I just kept thinking of how all this work I'm putting into it just for the car to not ever be able to be sold for more than 800 dollars. The value of the car had went down significantly, the windows didn't work, the exhaust was chopped off, the front end was making a clanking on bumps. Eventually sold it for 750 even though my asking price was for 1000. Just to have the guy who bought it trade it in for a pos truck with 300k miles on it when my vic had 150k. Then the guy who got my car from him, tinted the taillights and headlights and fucked up the interior and stole my 250 dollar aftermarket radio and relisted my car without a radio for 2k dollars and was asking for "trades for fourwheelers and atvs" Now i have no idea where it is. Because its probably being treated like shit somewhere and it was my first real car i loved at 17. Now I'm turning 20 soon and i have cried lots about that car even though i sold the car in September of 2021.

Divorce can also get to vehicles like that. You get divorced wife takes everything, and you are left with a ratty car that you want to fix, but no funds. It ends up sitting and getting worse and worse and you can't get the funds or time to work on it, as you are working two jobs every day to support your ex-wife and her boyfriend living in what used to be your house, and before you know it, it is a pile of rusted old garbage. Worst part is that people tend to disassemble a car into a million pieces, then something happens in their life or they just loose interest, and now the car is almost impossible to sell as it is in one million pieces, and only worth a small fraction of what they have in it. So, they keep it thinking that one day they will get it back together so that they can sell it for what its worth or enjoy it themselves. Most people just get in over their heads when disassembling a car. A nut and bolt restoration takes years to do, ask me how I know...

I think getting it out of there and in the hands of someone who need parts, the price was ok for buyer and seller. Only reason to try n save it is if it had some odd options, or all the options or none except the 455. The roof and floors are gonna be a lot of work.

Guy that purchased it planned to scrap it after taking a couple parts off of it. Yes I broke Some parts as a kid but In the end it didn’t really matter. The way the car was parked , the condition it was in before it sat and the length of time it sat made it not worth salvaging regardless of what little I did to it.
I did the best thing for it given it’s condition which was clean it up enough that someone could see the value in parts.

Wow , I sold my 79 for like 1800 a few years ago, it was a running and driving car that needed paint and alot of detail but was 95%complete. I knew it was to cheap to sell it but I was tired of it and couldn't afford to give you it then glory it needed, also it wasn't the 455 but it was 6.6 liter . Used to watch Smokey and the bandit and dream I could make it look that Way again

Rod, I had the same experience several years ago, 79 6.6 black, maroon interior complete condition but needed paint and detailing. zero rust, zero damage. Lost interest because it was an automatic and I really wanted a 4sd, 455. Guy from Texas on vacation drove by and saw it in my garage and wanted it so I sold it for what I had invested in it, broke even, $2,000.00. I am still sick over that because of what junk ones are going for. What I had was better than nothing.😡

I've had around a dozen F bomb's from the 70's era both poncho & Camaros.. one was a buy after seeing it for sale then later showing up at a tow yard I worked at & just been T boned from a drunk who managed to put it in the crosshares right there in the sellers front yard. Others I parted ...I had removed the Hurst style T tops and framework .I decided to hack the back half the roof off to see what a T/A convertible would look like...not very good I'll tell yeh..the trunk angle is all wrong. Last one I had was a fixed roof 78' four speed car with ac delete...lined up an SD 455 for it. But never got it done & sold it in bare metal ( UN-Rusted ) lol to a guy 4 states away .hated hated to let that one go.
