  • Intimidator 305 is one of the most visually impressive roller coasters out there. Not only that, but the ride delivers an unrivaled intense experience that many roller coaster enthusiasts absolutely adore. But not all people are fans of this roller coaster, and I actually think from a business perspective, this ride was a flop.

And i did some research for my own Intimidator video and found that attendance for Carowinds ans KD was about the same after 2010, and KD was being considered for a major investment but Carowinds got the money because the county offered better tax incentives. Non coaster bro here, and about 2 years late - but watching this video and all the history, I have to wonder if Cedar Fair's approach here was to try something similar to what auto manufacturers do with "halo cars". Where they knew going in that the ride wouldn't be for the masses, but hoped it's mere existence would entice the public into the park. Lexus famously "lost" money on selling their supercar, the LFA - but the whole point was to use the LFA as a sort of advertising pitch. So while the project, in a vacuum, was unprofitable, it was still a success for the brand. Point here being that while ridership must be a worthwhile metric to look at, maybe it doesn't tell the whole story. Just a thought I had...
Or maybe it was just a big L - I sure as heck don't know, haha

I remember going to Kings Dominion 3 or 4 years ago, probably around half a year before they removed Volcano and added that stunt coaster. It was a fairly busy day, and as soon as I found out my friends were planning to get food before they got on any rides, I only lasted about 5 minutes before I told them I was ditching them cause I couldn't wait to ride Intimidator. I was almost shaking from the excitement while walking over there, but had this creeping feeling of dread in my stomach that I was about to get stuck in a massive line with how "extreme" and "popular" the ride was with fellow thrill seekers. I got to I305 around an hour after the park opened, and there were only 2 people in the line. Such a small amount of people were trying to get on that the ride operators ended up having us wait for more people to get in line, worried about sending out almost empty cars. By the time my friends finished their food and made it over to Intimidator, I had already gotten 4 rides in on it. I immediately headed straight back towards the line as soon as my friends showed up, and rode it 2 more times with them back to back. 4 or 5 hours later, my friends were going by some of the restaurants to get dinner, and I lied and said I wasn't hungry and that I was gonna excuse myself to use the bathroom, and immediately walked straight back to Intimidator for my 7th ride. To top it all off, me and my friend went back to Intimidator around an hour before the park closed to see if it finally had a line. NOPE! So I ended the day by getting 3 more rides on I305, bringing my total to 10 rides within the course of a couple hours. I was beat to shit after my last ride from a combination of huge g forces, black/greyout inducing banked turns, and the physical toll from staying on my feet all day and running back and forth between I305 in between rides with my friends. I had one of the worst headaches of my night that life from all those cumulative rides throughout the day. Still was totally worth it though!

It makes sense that you'd get your vision back quickly on the airtime hill, as it's negative g which is forcing the blood back up into the head.. Its basically reversing the effect of the positive g in quick succession. But to avoid the "greyout" on the positive g, just do what I've recommended to others in the comment section of some of these videos. As an aerobatic pilot who often does maneuvers greater than +6g, it's necessary a lot of times, and is basically guaranteed to work on lower g rollercoasters. G-strain. You tense up the muscles in your legs, thighs mainly and a bit of core, as much as you can. The somewhat crude explanation is, pretend like you're sitting on the toilet trying to force out a really bad poo that won't come out. Lol. Clench down and just "hhnnnngggg". You'll never Grey out or black out from positive g ever again.

I've seen the peak sustained G forces claimed to be as high as 4.5G for Intimidator, that's higher than the 3G max sustained astronauts experience on an average launch. Frankly they should've given it a fighter or space theme and marketed it off it's exceptional G forces, because having to use G force mitigating techniques like a fighter pilot on a roller coaster is incredibly cool and unique, no other coaster demands that kind of active participation from riders.

As a VA local, I think the location of 305 by Flight of Fear played into the low ride numbers. You literally had to walk around both Volcano and Flight of Fear (two very popular rides) to get to the queue. You (used to) come to KD for Volcano, wait over an hour, then hop to FoF, wait another hour, then it’s time to eat. By then, you’re heading to other rides before the park closes. 305 should have been put either near the front so it steals the attention of entering guests or near Drop Zone to pair with DZ’s 300-ft height. Put that’s just my opinion.

I am a ride op at I305 and I can definitely say that you are right about the capacity. Kings Dominion gives us a lower capacity number in the manual. I've never been told exactly why but I think it has to do with the fact that when it opened there were typically 4 operators checking restraints at all times but now because of staffing issues we often have only 2 operators checking restraints and coupled with low ridership they assumed that this was a safe number to strive for. I don't remember the exact figure they gave but I believe the theoretical max capacity is 38 trains per hour although 30 is about average on slower days. We have been known to hit closer to 35 when the park is busy and we are properly staffed. It is also impossible to hit the capacity number listed by Intamin because like you mentioned we can only dispatch the train in the station once the other train parks in waiting which takes 1min 50. Also you mentioned that the ride only has one lift speed which is partially true but we have a wet mode which slows the lift speed down and it's sometimes on even when its not raining which can also decrease capacity. And those trims are such a buzzkill, especially during morning test rides it feels like it's going to valley every time. I wish I knew more about the capacity issue myself but I hope this shed a little light on it. Another great video Ryan, honored that there's footage of me checking restraints in here and I hope to see you and the rest of the coaster idiots at KD soon.

The first time I rode Intimidator, yeah I did black out. The second time I used the Fighter Pilot technique to combat the G-force and it wasn’t nearly as bad. I think the main problem was that people aren’t prepared when going in. Anaconda and the Grizzly are and always will be my favorites.

This does look like the one coaster I sadly might take a pass on when I visit this summer. I love intense rides like El Toro and even the original Cyclone. But some steel coasters just give me a pounding headache that honestly, can ruin a trip. I’m not GP or an enthusiast. Rather I’m somewhere in between. Love coasters. Enough to watch videos incessantly, but not able to handle a ride that can beat me up.
In contrast, I’ll be going to Carrowinds this summer as well and riding Fury 325 is something I’m very much looking forward to, while I 305 has me on the fence. If I ride it, it’ll be at the end of the day just to make sure a headache doesn’t ruin my day there.
Update: I-305 was ok. Didn’t beat me up at all. Fun. 1 ride on it though because Twisted Timber’s had me transfixed! Fury though, 5 rides and loved it. But I would absolutely re-ride this again. It’s just not my favorite in the park by far.

I305 is a very smooth running coaster. I’ve ridden the inaugural season and many times thereafter having Season passes. The bank after the drop hill may cause a brief grey out but quick recovery going into the next element. Imo the smoothest ride esp for an aged 40 yo at the time. Unlike the Hurler, which shook my brain 🧠 after each run although my son wanted to ride over and over, ugh 😣.

I like intense coasters, but blacking out isn't enjoyable. I'm an athletic young man, and if I could barely see on the first turn, it's a real problem. Twisted Timbers was really fun! I doubt they'll open up this year though :,(

Even as a coaster enthusiast, I don’t enjoy blacking out on coasters. I’m glad you mentioned it on this video and the Millennium Force video because it seemed like I was the only one this happened to lol.
Millennium Force is my all time favorite coaster, and I still gray out during the first turn.
I know I’ve been on Intimidator 305, but didn’t remember the experience until lockouts were mentioned. That’s probably why I didn’t ride it again. (EDIT: maybe I rode the Intimidator at Carowinds and not KD) The Grizzly at KD is a lot of fun and I can see the whole ride!

I just went on Intimidator yesterday and had the time of my life graying out on that first turn, but knew if I looked there would be a video like this. I only go to theme parks once or twice a year, but when I do I like to have at least one really intense ride to choose from. Which, given that frequency of attendance, I guess just isn't a big enough market to justify the construction of rides like this. Oh well, hope it stays operational long enough for me to try it out again.

you said last video that you would possibly do a Ranking of cedar point rollercoasters. I think you should do a collab with airtime thrills or another coaster enthusiast yt channel via the internet. You could do it where you both give your top picks while the other gives theirs. You could even just do a top ten all time favorite rollercoaster list. I think that this would be pretty cool.

I actually didn't know Volcano had been shut down before this video, I'm glad I got to ride it while it was operational. I think a video on that roller coaster would be awesome, others have made videos about why it shut down but I know you could do a way better, more informative, and funnier video. It's no wonder why Six Flags and Cedar Fair have abandoned Intamin over the years. Would it be that difficult to program the variable speed into it's control software?
Seems like there should be a way to link it to the block section system, if the block clears the speed can be increased.
