You videos are giving me less and less reasons to finish off fixing my games. I finally have gotten off my ass in the past few days and gotten my Centipede closer to getting finished off. If I stay with it I might have it going by next week, and also rebuild the joysticks on my Smash TV as well.
So much work involved in that cabinet!
Nice music, especially the first one... I'm a sucker for those old-school chiptune sounds :D
Thanks! Glad you liked it. :)
I liked the part where you painted the right side and then the top twice ! :P Restore is looking great John - can't wait to see it done.
awesome! Were addicted to these restores.
Thanks John, for the intro to Arcade Impossible. Those guys seem great. And there not far from me. I will have to meet up with them sometime. Greg has some parts I need for my OutRun cab. So that is awesome!! Love the music added to your vids...Sounds great, very cool, added touch!!! You are SOOOO close to being done with Pac. Its coming together man... Peace Out
love the music, thanks for another great video
Cool, great tips. Good music, too.
Great stuff!!!! Looking sweeeeet!
Great progress John, I have a cab that needs this sort of work doing on it and it's a real pain to get motivation to work on it.... Watching your videos gives me some motivation so keep it up.
You can do it! :)
love the music keep up the great videos
It really is coming together, nicely. By the way, your band's music lends itself to theremin quite nicely, on both melody, and accomp. I like the genres your band plays. Will check it out on Sound Cloud. Thanks for the video.
i like the musical interludes a lot, added some atmosphere to the vid and the music itself was great! will listen to the album tomorrow. enjoyed watching the shoddy workmanship and for some reason i found it very amusing when you nailed the planks to the bottom.
(just pulling your leg about the workmanship ;))
Glad you liked my shoddy workmanship. :) This thing is gonna be sweet in the next video. ALMOST DONE!
Nice Groove! ;)
Those boards on the bottom are used for shipping only to protect the leg levelers and the bottom of the unit from getting damaged during shipping. They are supposed to be removed by the arcade owner upon receiving.
Otherwise, I've watched every video in this series and think your 'show' is just perfect - I love old school games and I love learning. Great job!
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I eventually removed those bottom boards. D'oh!
lol Sorry, I felt like a jackass when I watched the next video and saw that not only did you remove them, but tons of other people commented on it. :(
welcome back!
Looking forward to see how this turns out. I never paint with a brush. Leaves too many streaks so I'm curious how yours will look. I know you can't really see it in a dark basement but I know it would bother me. lol Anyway, great job so far and love hearing the music during the fast clips. Nice touch!
Cool music btw!
John you're simply amazing. I'm applying this advice to a terrible strikers 1945 I got at auction. My first real project. (Not just changing sticks) also ill follow you on soundcloud.
Wow, thanks! Good luck on your restore! I hope it turns out great!
It's the John's Arcade Drinking Game! Take a shot every time John says 'Bondo' :D
I think you'd be hammered. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Ha ha, yes, quite possibly! Great work on the cabinet so far, I'm sure it'll look AMAZING when it's finished :)
That's the plan. It's hard to imagine it looking great at this stage but trust me, it's gonna be sweet when we're done.
1:29 haha you like red wine? cheers me too.
When using a handheld router like that, you want to move from left to right. The bit spins clockwise when the router is right-side-up.
Well deserved post cab resto vino on the go at 1.30 lol
Yes, I enjoyed some wine afterwards. :)
Those boards on the bottom are shipping nailers. Meantt o be pulled off, but many people let them on.
I suspect those plywood strips were used in production for ease of movement probably production line rollers. The levelers would have been raised up tight to the cabinet to prevent them from being ripped out of the cheap wooden bottom.
More restore video's :D
Is there some Video or Tutorial of you how to start with the set-up of a Cabinet to a MAME Cabinet? I have one at home and need some tecnical advise, for example the old screen doesnt work anymore, and i need to replace it etc.
Great idea with the music John. Will be checking out soundcloud next.
What restore are you planning next spring?
Great job John. The cabinet turned out great. Are you going to put the cabinet in the basement prior to putting in the monitor to keep the weight down?
Yes, I actually did this already. I brought the cabinet down by myself and empty.
Wow i really loved the music! Are you guys on I-tunes or something similar?
Yes, our first album is on iTunes and Amazon. -- itunes.apple.com/us/album/science-fiction-movie/id447957828 -- www.amazon.com/Science-Fiction-Movie-Kill-Screens/dp/B005BGWG5A
Yeah, oops! I somehow played the same clip twice. D'oh!
Hey john you think it was used like a palet guide on the bottom of the machine. If they used quick way on and off. Dunno just an idea, great job on your machine man
14:19 You blew a fuse? Damn, that router must use A LOT of volts.
amps/watts, not volts.
Music works well. It should be kept as a standard.
Thanks!! :) I have tons of songs, will not be a problem. :)
Hey John. I know this is an old video but I need your help.
Im building a cabaret from scratch and the one thing i need are... dimensions. Ive looked every where for the with no luck. All i need are the side dimensions. Like every nook and cranny.
So if you could help me out that'd be just dandy.
+Ridge Woods Im planning on making a Pac-Man replica while using EVERYTHING I know about the cabinet, the blue speckled yellow paint and all.
Hey John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech i have a question for you. I just recently purchased a Ms. Pacman upright cabinet and am running into some issues. My pcb only boots up to show 2 icons (fruit and a pretzel) flashing on the screen and cannot figure it out for the life of me. but my main question is, any time i touch a piece of metal (coin door, CP, etc) i can feel a slight tingle shock. have you ever seen this when fixing up arcade machines?
Matt Pate This sounds like a ground issue. My Baby Pac had this issue where I would get shocked when I touched the control panel. There is a ground strap that goes to the panel. Make sure it's connected and follow it back to make sure nothing is disconnected.
Also, check your +5V on the pcb to make sure the power supply is good for that boot issue.
Thanks for the reply! Great videos as well! You are the sole reason i decided to take this as a hobby and so far i love it! I will check all those ground straps and possibly replace them. checked my pcb and turns out all my ram chips were rusted to the board.
is it ok to lay my MS pack man upright on its side with monitor and everything hooked up inside, or could that hurt anything?
just make sure everything is secure and monitor is bolted down before you do it. It should be just fine. I have transported games on their backs many times and on their sides a few times. If you can do it on the back I think it's safer.
Hey the link for the sound cloud page is missing an "s"
I fixed it!
Another excellent video, its great to see the amount of care and detail you put in to restore these games. I have one arcade cab project and trying to convince the wife to get a 2nd one for my 60 in 1 board, maybe I'll try and record those and put them up on youtube. The music was great and works well during the speedy parts, I think you should continue with that trend. Sometimes when I feel creative I put stuff up on soundcloud as well. soundcloud.com/analog-x64
What thickness of wood do you use for the sides of your cabinets? I'm looking at building my father a Galaga cabinet and I'm just wondering.
Thanks.
I matched the original wood. Which I think was 3/4"
HI, John . Love the Music . Someone Mention about Mame , How about Hyperspin. I'm trying to fig that 1 out too. I dnld a file like 9 gig or more can't remember. but I would love to get that on my Pc Machine just for mame.
Just an suggestion but maybe roll on some paint on the sides to give the vinyl something to stick to? i don't think the old wood and bondo is best thing to stick to ?
I sure hope you're wrong about that. :) I wasn't planning on painting. The orginal was stuck directly to the wood. The wood is smooth and clean. I think I'll be ok.
try a test peace (your samples)
on it see how it sticks
20:50 MAGIC IS REAL CONFIRMED
O_o
...Oh, I see what happened! The foot blended in with the color of the cabinet making it look like it wasn't there. XD
I have a theory that the t-molding didnt originally go all the way around to the bottom. On the unedited side {without the bondo corner} i don't see a groove going all the way to the bottom. Makes me wonder if it ever actually did go there and if it just stopped at the front bottom.
No, it def' goes around to the bottom.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech It might just of been I couldn't see it very clearly in the video. Idk but ill take your word for it. :)
What if I don't have a router? How to do it
Those are called T-nuts. You would have been better off putting a whole new piece of plywood on the bottom or at least drilling out those rotted holes and filling with wooden plugs with new holes for your T-nuts. Whats the point of those cross beams?? You could have installed your T-nuts into those as well. Pretty hack job either way.
+Multi Game System I don't recall what happened in this video. But I think it was determined those crossbeams were for shipping and shouldn't have been there. Probably in the next video I fixed everything. In the end it def' was not a hack job. I'm as sensitive about that as you. :)
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Oh yeah I was gonna guess maybe those cross pieces had been installed so a fork lift didnt mar up the bottom of the cabinet. Yeah sorry to say that but I got frustrated when I saw you putting those t-nuts into those rotted out holes with the wrong sized wood screews. The particle board or mdf would have most likely failed again since the bottom of that cabinet was pretty funky. Also using a nail gun to install those wooden cross pieces without glue made me cringe. I pre-drill screw and glue everything I build. Also would have been tempted to seal the bottom of that cabinet with something.
Multi Game System Yeah, I getcha. But, the game is rock solid and has been a good citizen in my arcade for the past three years. It's solid and good! :)
Is it just me or did that t molding slot look off center even on the original. I thought it was supposed to be in the center but it looked offset.
Heater going? Yea, a router and a heater will easily trip a 15A breaker.
play on player!
Why not start with new wood and redo the cabinet, I understand it won't be original but some of that wood looks nasty.
Nice work and music. Feel free to check out my arcade room video showing my arcade machines I made in house in my workshop. Keep up the great work.

Do you have a Pac man machine?
(asks this question on a video of someone restoring their Pac man machine)
