its not about the money its about doing it yourself and learning something at same time :) Good Work John
Saving money is always fun too! :) And, yes, I love the feeling of accomplishing something and learning along the way!
Gooey Remnants would be a good band name.
Yay, more Pac-Man restore! I love watching these kinds of videos, there's so many technical things about arcade games and cabinets I never knew about. (Thanks for adding "grommet" to my vocabulary!)
Grommet is a good word. It will come in handy later. Thank me then. :)
Nice! I love your restoration videos. The longer and more detailed, the better. Man, I can't wait to see how that liquid mask peels off. Very interesting stuff.
Great stuff John. Love these restore documentation videos.
excellent was looking forward to more pac man progress thanks john
Nice on John... love the restore videos... good to see you back on track. Already subscribe to the podcasts - great fun... cheers
Wow. It's amazing how much you did with all the work you're doing to that cabaret.
Great vid John! Also i like the new VGO video podcast format :) Listener since episode 1 here..
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Hey John, just a tip for getting off tough adhesive: I pretty much gave up on Goo Gone a long time ago; I find it pretty useless for anything more then a little corner of glue from a price tag or something. What I use is plain old Zippo fluid. I've used it to remove stickers that were on my guitars for years, and it'll even take off little bits of paper left behind with the adhesive. It pretty much breaks down old adhesive into a goo that can be wiped right off with some paper towel.
jordanzish Zippo fluid is 100% Naptha, which is what he used to clean the overspray, I am not sure why he didn't try it on the adhesive.
great vid & fun to watch. can't wait for the paint drying episode :)
Yes! back to the PAC-MAN!
so great videos !! you do a really great job man !!
You must save a fortune repairing your own games. Nice work!
YES! Yes, you do save a lot of money doing this your self!
The blunt sitting on the table with the wrap is a good touch. lmao
Blunt? It's a cigar. LOL. Blunt is not my scene. :)
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Really...that smoking-nonsense is useless.
John, I am in the process of collecting and have around 60 games now. I dont have a gameroom yet so I have no experience but everybody tells me that the games will brake down all 5minutes, especially with that many games.
I rarely hear you complaining about a dead game and sometimes you let them run for like 14hours.
Only your Tempest died once as far as know.
If I change capacitors, edgeconnectors (with soldering the pins), reflow soldering and upgrade to ATX-pc-grade PSUs, should the games run stable the most of the time?
Thanks for letting me listen to the theme song for a minute! (P.S. I really like it for some reason... :P)
You are my hero.
Thanks, buddy! :)
Great vid, love it. Your own personal arcade totally rocks as well lol.
Thanks, buddy! It's a labor of love. :)
Keep up the vids, cant wait to see the next part of the PacMan restoration!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Good more Pac-Man!
I think that yellow is an etch primer to prevent rust. I use a similar product when i paint cars under the primer coat.
That joystick is interesting to see taken apart
Remember to sand lightly the partical board so the new vinal sticks
Think so? Hmmm… I'll research this topic before I apply it!
Hi John.. LOVE your repair videos, you got so many great ideas and solutions to solving a problem, like the liquide masking.. i diddent know such a thing existed.. now the biggest problem is to find something like that here in Denmark ;o) i use a lot of your ideas when working on my own arcade machines so keep up the good work. Best regards from the other side of the earth.
Thanks, buddy! I sure hope that liquid mask works. I haven't removed it yet. Time will tell! :)
I removed the liquid mask off tonight…. STAY TUNED! :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Cool, cant wait to see how it went :) found a liquide mask conterpart here in denmark, so im all set.. also read ou could use wood glue.. have to try myself soon..
Sweet! I'll be posting the liquid mask reveal this weekend! :) Stay tuned….
Excellent work as always, this was a surprise this week, nice one. Still got the sprint, hope that's the next restore and you don't let it go for $100. Ever thought on doing a vid on how to make a half decent MAME cab? I think you'd do a real good series on that subject.
Yeah, maybe some day I can do a MAME video. We'll see. I just don't have a need for one of those cabs atm.
it's gonna be cold as balls next weekend.
I don't want to hear it! :)
What to do with a (badly) chipped side? There's like a big slice out of the side, and the T moulding is loose
pac man is back! it was great seeing those original graphics come back. that overspray was horrid! i really want to see the next part. you didn't show the removal of the t-molding did you?
i did enjoy it. nice video as usual, great job on the editing.
yeah, showed the t-molding being removed. I just yanked it off. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
i'm more interested on how you re-apply new t-molding because some people use different glues and stuff in the valley. i've never put in new tmolding before
It’s like watching the anal retentive guy from SNL restore and arcade machine. But seriously thank you for the detail...it’s what I needed to reassemble my original joystick
Good video, I can see why the videos are typically over 1 hour long. Without those fast forward bits, The video would've been a couple of hours long.
My control panel is the same! But a different game. :P
Hey John,
so you are really going to reconvert the multi-williams cab back to it's original bubbles origins!?
I see you have put the Bubbles marquee on.
I like Bubbles it's a fun game and it's quite original.
But if you convert it back you will have to get rid of the two joysticks..and so no more Robotron...maby not such a good idea after all !!
Unless you buy a dedicated Robotron machine ;)
Wich site and wich brand of buttons and microswitches do you use?
Depends on the game and the application. I almost always try to replicate how it was when I got it. So, like a NEO GEO or Street Fighter I'd go for HAPP microswitch buttons. But for a game like Pac? I'd go for leaf switches from Bob Roberts.
Hey John, in your experience have you seen that most arcade machines use particle board as this Pac Man machine incorporates or the MDF? I am thinking of making a MAME cabinet and want to stay fairly true to the materials.
I don't see many MDF cabinets from the 80s. Usually plywood or Particle board. However, I know a lot of cabinet duplicators today are using MDF.
Also, the full-size Pac-Mans are typically plywood. Personally, the plywood cabinets are the best, most durable, and lightest.
I just noticed that the front of the control panel has Pac-Man with red eyes, and yet on the top, he has blue eyes. WTC?
CONSPIRACY!?!??!?
What you're looking for is called Frisket film.
Who, me? Nope, I was looking for liquid mask. I wanted to paint it on, not apply it and then cut it off.
John you should buy a heater for your garage :P
I have been told this a few times. :)
You should get a cordless mic...every time I see that mic cord dangling I picture your tripod and camera getting pulled over. Nice game and nice restoration!!!!
I would seriously love a cordless mic. The cord on this mic I am using now is a major hassle!
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
the sound is really good on the mic you use. sounds like you are standing right next to the viewer.
alby13 Definitely really clear. But I know one day all we'll hear is Crunch SSSSSSSSSSS
Noticed you have george from sienfield on your wall lol.
Yeah, I am a big Seinfeld fan! :)
I would be more for CS-GO or ArmA 3 , since I'm aiming to become more of a PC gamer.
My joysticks have 4 microswitches and not that little metal piece on the switch, does that infect the gameplay?
Original Pac-Man's would have leaf switches, not micro switches. It's all personal preference. I prefer the leaf switches. They are smoother and less clicky.
yeah well the joystick will feel different. if you want the pac man experience go with the original setup because nothing else feels just right
(No idea if you did answer this before)
My coin compartor runs on 12v, can I just use a 12v charger and just cut off the ends and solder them on? for the power? And wich ones need to go to the power? greets
siimsimsiim
well voltage is only 1 part of power. there is also the current measured in amps. you need to know how much current it needs and how much the charger outputs. in general all the power for everything in the arcade should be supplied by the power supply
I don't know annything about that coin mech I have, there's no information for it on internet, I have the Suzo CC-40 09-95. It needs 12v, what do I have to do?
Honestly, I like both Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. But I will say I'm much more of a Halo guy.
I hate to think just how toxic that glue is when your using the heat gun on the control pannel overlay.
Get classic asteroids pls
I hate how long the Goo Gone smell lasts!
58:20 Meh. For me, there's only Nintendo games. The Super Smash Bros. series is a good time killer.
pgj1997 58:20
You need a heater in the garage, John
Yeah, I do. :)
i hate any fps game. i like games with good story and more then shooting random people.
Simple green but orange
Bruh
Wallace & Gromit?
Wrong Gromit. :)
I'm a COD fan but to me I felt with Ghosts I got ripped off. Nothing really new other than a few adons. The campaign was way too short and boring. I'm actually selling my copy. Won't be buying another COD from now on without renting it first.
