- Here is a new and improved recipe for the famous northeastern Thai salad! For my health-conscious fans, this is also a very healthy salad, so I can really let myself indulge without having to hold back! Serve it with some sticky rice, and try changing up the vegetables because in Thailand we make hundreds of variations on this salad! Note also that it is gluten-free and essentially fat-free, minus a little bit in the peanuts and dried shrimp. Enjoy!

Thank you for watching!
Hi, thanks for this awesome vid. I have a question can this possibly put in a jar and make it like papaya salad in a jar. If I preserved it how many days it will last?
News
what's the alternative if i don't have mortar and pestle? you told n your video you'll suggest it but i can't find it on the description part.
Pailin's Kitchen what if i dont have mortar and pesle?
Our friend wiggy from Thailand whom we so dearly love so much like part of our family because we have known her since the eighties and have found her again after losing contact with her used to make this and I used to love it so much. Sometimes she would make milder versions both hot and fish-wise and sometimes she would make it strong. I remember how at first I was grossed out by the smell and taste of it but over time I loved eating it. Sometimes when she made the much weaker ones I would not enjoy it as much. Now that I know what is in this delicious recipe I will enjoy it even more. I think I will head out to my local Laos food restaurant and order some of this; "the strong one." Thank you so much for sharing this from you and Wiggys beautiful culture. Love you Wiggy.
What I love about this video is that she went through the technique and process thoroughly, not just the recipe. We have a lot of papaya trees and chili plants in the farm. Cannot wait to try this. 🇵🇭
Im glad Im from Sri Lanka because almost all of the ingredients are easily found here. I have papayas, limes, chillies and long beans in my garden so I don't have to spend too much on this delicious dish ♥️
I didn’t have papaya so I used cucumber and jicama and it was still so bomb! Honestly it’s the sauce that makes this recipe in my opinion
Carrot or corn also very good
I was thinking green mango too
Actually this exist in thailand too, som tam tang
@@dueyduey1611 wow i never knew that 😍
My mom use cucumber or vermicelli noodles also. I used carrots or raw mango :) in Thailand they have so many varieties and even corn or crab but that's another recipe. Also shrimp.
Dear Pai, eversince I was in Thailand last year I am cooking Thai inspired dishes. I am really happy I found your channel and with all your great explanations I get better and better. Thank you so much for inspiration, your secret tricks you reveal and explain....and your english is so nice and good to listen to!
Grew up with Som Tum, bring back a lot of childhood memories, thank you !
For me, Green Papaya Salad takes the crown. In my humble opinion it's pretty much the best salad in the world. It is such a taste explosion
Thank you for this quick and easy recipe.
This is the Best..You explain it soo nicely and understandable..Sooo good!I love Papaya Salad...
Ruthy Pie love you too

jjgdl6 and
You really have a flare or knack for doing a great presentation. It was very clear , easy to follow and your personality shines. Thank you.
OMG the way you julienned the papaya has blown my mind!
Som Tam and Thai beer on the beach. Best thing ever.
Plus bbq chicken
With some larb gai and rice too!
And a little bag of thai whisky that you pierce and drink with a straw
@@DAIO12345 Or BBQ pork jowl.
@@uttopya1 Even better - SangSom, where they bring you the whole damn bottle with some ice and soda water to mix as you like.
Som Tum was my favourite dish in Thailand. I actually prefer the Som Tum Poo Pla from the Isaan region, which seemed to surprise many locals as westerners tend to shy away from that variety. I'll definitely make this some time soon!
Great recipe and explanations! I used it as inspiration for a vegetarian version. A little lemon pickle (Indian pickle) took the place of the pickled crabs and gave complexity + acidity + some salt and heat. Delicious!
Omg! I always order this salad whenever we eat on a thai res. Definitely gonna do this! 💜
This is my favorite dish to eat when I was in Thailand... Thank you Pai for an awesome recipe, I can't wait to make it now for myself
I love the description and how you're explaining everything. Can't wait to try this!! Thank you.
I do not usually use tamarind in my papaya salad but with your recipe, it’s seriously spot on Thai flavors! I now use it all the time! Thank you for this recipe! Yum!
Thank you for this recipe Pailin. 😃 I just made this for my family today and all of them loved it. Even though I used salt to season instead of fish sauce (as we are short on it), the dish still tastes amazing. ❤
I followed your recipe and it turns out really good 👍 exactly like the one I used to have when I was in Bangkok, thank you! I’ve been missed som tum for soooo long time, I went to three Asian supermarkets to gather all the tools and ingredients , it totally worth it!
My whole family love papaya salad. We remember this when we were children, living in Singapore in the early 60's. I made one from just memory and what my mum remembered from when we were there. It turned out okayish!, but it can be better, after having watched you making the authentic version with the right ingredients. I'll be out shopping for the ingredients and making one very soon. Can't wait
I love your videos Pai coz it's not just about recipes. You teach us techniques and Thai culture as well. Bravo. This green papaya salad makes me wanna go to the market and get all the ingredients and make it myself. LOL. :)
We all loved it when we were in Thailand.. every single day we enjoyed it... I loved the way YOU explained the recipe... I'll definitely give it a try...
I've watched a lot of asian cooking but love yours the most!
I like your not over the top attitude and keep things very informative.
Thanks for the recipe!
I love everything about this channel!!!
Me too
Hi Pailin. I prepared the salad for 13 people yesterday. All I can say: Very delicious, and so fresh. Thanks for that stunning recipe. Greets!
I had spicy papaya salad for the first time 2 days ago and it was amazing! I feel like it might be a new obsession
Years ago I watched this video, purchased all the ingredients (including palm sugar that I still have), made at home. It was a sticky endeavor & I used too much pepper, but I crave this salad! I don’t make it very often, but when I do...I use this recipe. Thank you.
I make this recipe nearly every week....it's just awesome..
This looks so yummy, cant wait to try it, thanks once again for another healthy & tasty dish....
Haha omg I just love the way she talks and the spirit she has, thanks for the recipe
I always enjoy your presentation. Few dishes have been tried and they were ALL good. Thank you Pailin.
Really sophisticated presentation. From what I remember living in Thailand you presented the correct version of home made papaya salad.
Excellent demo! I can't wait to try this.
I made this for my wife and daughter and they loved it!! Bad news they want it all the time now.
I love this salad! Great recipe and cool tips on preparation. I've made it many times & it's always delicious!
I made this dish so many times now based on the old version, always nice to see a refresh. Love this recipe. Thank you!
I love your channel. Thanks for making all the video.
Hi Pailin, I just discovered your channel while looking for this green papaya salad recipe. Great video! Very well balanced explanations vs demonstration, great job. I subscribed.
I just used your recipe and it’s spot on!!! So good!!! Thank you! This will be my go too recipe from now on!
Wow I'm drooling only from listening and watching how you explain this. Well done, love it!
Thank you! I followed this recipe and it was amazing!
Omg this is one of my favorite dishes. They don't know how to make it over here though lol. Homemade is always better!
I agree with you 100%.
Claymore007 I was wondering what makes thai papaya salad and Laos papaya salad different. I mean I know they’re different but I wanted to know in both distinctive ways and thai is sweeter and sour and Laos is spicy and fishy
Laos style usually use padek which is a preserved fermented fish sauce. thai style use the light fish sauce most people are familiar with
the moment you chop the papaya with the big knife, it changes my entire life. I can julienne the papaya better than anyone in my house now. Thanks Pai! Love from Indonesia.
I just want to say that your video was so very refreshing and so clear in the instructions. I love your enthusiasm and natural manner. I hope you are still doing this - making videos on You tube. Excellent!
so love your channel Pai. Som Tam looks fabulous, gotta try this one for sure!
And by the way, every time I hold your cookbook in my hands I can't put it away :)
Hi Pailin, you make cooking look fun. I've made a couple of your dishes and they've come out really good. I really enjoy your show.
Thank you so much for making this video!! The first time I made papaya salad I watched your video and it’s the only video I would watch when making papaya salad now!! So yummy!
I don't know if I have ever wanted to eat something more. That looks delicious. Thank you for sharing.
this is my absolute fave. Had it at Buddhist festival in Wimbledon. Good memories.
Wat Buddhapadipa:)
@@rubym3808 yes it was :)
I love this video. She explains clearly
i love when she say lets get started.....it sound different but i love it
Delicious. I love how you describe each steps and ingredients.
I've never had, but my mouth waters every time. Yum
Your missing out!!! you neeeeeed to try this! Its a must!!! :)
Pai is one of my favorite cities in Thailand, I loved every minute of it
Delightful, crunchy and refreshing salad. Thank you!
Watching you is already very refreshing. Love your personality!
I will open my own tomyum restaurant in the Philippines next year and this papaya will be a compliment. Thanks
Made this recipe and it was AMAZING. The first Thai dish I've made at home that was actually better than what I've gotten at a restaurant. I used the 3 Crabs Fish sauce that you've recommended and I think it really makes a difference, it's just not as funky as the other ones I've cooked with.
Megachef, three crab and Thai kitchen is my favorite.
I followed your guide exactly and it tastes exactly like home ☺️☺️ Thank you 🙏
Informative, clear and straight to the point, funny amd entertaining at the same time.
The best one yet😊
I know this is late but I'm so glad I found this channel. I have always wanted to travel to Thailand and experience the food and culture. This only rekindles my need to go!
Glad to hear that and hope to see you including other upvoters after the COVID gone. However please don't expect too much from us. Thailand is just a small and humble country which, like every places, has both good and bad people/things. Expecting something too much usually leads to disappointment because it does not meet our level of expectation, even though it might be OK. Anyway, you are always welcome here. Be our guests anytime.
Omg, I was salivating like crazy!!!! Looks soo good!
Agreed. The food's not bad either...
Thank you so much for a beautiful salad, can’t wait to try one.
You are very fun to watch. Love the way you explain the ingredients and recipe❤
Thank you for the lovely recipe! I microwaved the chili and garlic because I don't like the taste of them raw but even after that it still tasted really good, dare I say, even better than the one I had in Bangkok
My favorite appetizer at Thai restaurants!!!
This was my absolute favourite thing to eat in Thailand. Such an amazing dish!
Pai, I love your recipes and your effervescent energy. Definitely gonna try this one soon.
Omg ! I remember making this helping my Thai friend 25 years ago. She had me cut it with a machete outside on the patio.
Lol! That's gangster af!
I lived in Thailand for 5 months and discovered som tum. Easily one of my favorite dishes in the world. Thanks for explaining it so well! I'm gonna make myself some as a New Years treat :)
Im in love whit it. Papaya salad was the most spicy meal i ever had in Thailand, but even if you take fire the addiction make you you keep going to eat until the end, lovely
perfection! Looks just amazing. Thank you for sharing your style on cutting lime & Papaya. and I love how you use the mortar and pestle. This is a great alternative to mincing or crushing garlic, and I bet it gives it a unique flavor crushing all the ingredients together. I can't wait to try this. I've never used a mortar and pestle in this way. Thank you so much for sharing
Papaya salad is one of my favorite dishes I like it the traditional Thai style and the Laos style with the "Dirty fish sauce'
For the palm sugar, I often just let it soak in the lime juice that I squeezed out. The acidity breaks and dissolves the hard pieces of sugar. Dissolving could take a while depending how big the sugar pieces are.
Brown coco nut sugar or even white sugar is basically just as good. I see most vendors in Thailand use white sugar.
😮
My favorite salad dish of all time
This is my favorite Thai food ! Thanks for all of your great recipes
Pai, Just ordered my pestle and mortar, cannot wait to try your recipe as this is one of my favorite Thai salads.
I love to add either fermented crabs or salted duck egg in mine. Thanks again Paï
You preparation technique and tips and other tricks really amazing to come up to a very delicious salads. I really love it. Thank you.
love this video... thank you Pailin!
God bless, You! I learned a lot, give a man a fish feed him for a day, give him the knowledge to fish, feed him for life.
Yum, my absolute favourite. My mouth is drooling. I want to go to Bangkok. 🤤
I LOVE THIS!!!! I will make this at home this week! Thank you !
I love your video because of your bright funny personality that makes me feeling very relaxed.
I love all of the facial expressions, gestures in this video. The last one when you question 'fake lime juice' actually makes me giggle. Omg so lovely!!
So glad I bought her cookbook!!! Every dish I made is soo authentic and delicious
Please make video of yor cooking..
Awesome and thanks!! :) Adam
The salad is amazing. Great job! I have one request if at all possible you could make green chicken curry which I remember eating in Northern Thailand. thanks for all the great videos
Nice video and easy to follow recipe. Thank you Pailin
ดูเเล้วนํ้าลายไหลเลยครับ ❤️❤️❤️
I love this ... Topped with Crispy Chicken Skin and sticky rice ... sooooooo good!!
OMG!!! A little bit salty crispy chicken skin makes me mad as it can get along well with papaya salad. Have you ever tried crispy pork skin? It is yummy, too.
I love a salad that makes me feel alive
Yum! Love your video! You explain everything so well. I'm horrible at making this so hopefully it comes out better after watching this awesome video. Thank you!
Love ❤️ it . I like how u explained it. It’s so clear to understand
my favorite Thai dish.. I always get one with salted egg.. now I can do this at home..
I like this but I love the Mango version :) My favorite and must have dish when I'm in Thailand or Thai Restaurant :) Pai You're Awesome and I am loving all your videos & recipes. Thai Iced Tea was brilliant cause i tried to do it myself many times with the same tea brand you used, but guess what, i didnt use condensed milk and that pinch of salt! Cant wait to get back to Malaysia next week and I'm so gonna try that Thai Iced Tea just the way you showed us all :)
Awesome video, I tried your recipe today and it’s sooooooo delicious 😋, much more flavorful than some popular Thai restaurants I had in Los Angeles. Love your channel, thank you! 😊 👍 ❤️
I am Filipino and i love Thai foods. And this one is my fave ❤️💖
I'm gonna try to make this. Cambodians have a similar salad, we call it "bok lahong". It translates to pound/beat papaya. Bok= pound/beat/crash, Lahong= papaya. Thanks for sharing.
guitrich my yay yay makes this salad for Christmas usually. It’s so spicy but delicious!
Pai: I made my first Green Papaya salad today using your cookbook recipe, along with my new mortar and pestle (the clay one specific foWr GPS. I used 1 Tbsp fish sauce + 1 Tbsp Shrimp paste. It was excellent!
I think papaya salad doesn't have shrimp paste. But if you like, that's fine.
That’s the Laos version with crab paste. Will stink the house but worth it and add carrot to it for a beautiful color and taste great then try sweet rice (aka sticky rice) instead, you will love this which I love every time I make my papaya salad.
Excellent presentation and recipes. This how all cooking videos should be done. Really enoyable. Palin -- you are a star!
One of my favorite salads! Thank you ❤️
