This is the steak salad that will "redefine" steak salads for you. It's what I call the "real" steak salad, because it's not just a steak on top of a bowl of salad greens, the steak IS the whole salad! Nam Tok (literally "waterfall) is a classic northeastern Thai or "Isaan" dish perfect for BBQ season. This salad is satisfying, yet bright and light because of all the fresh herbs. Oh, and spicy! Serve with sticky rice for an authentic Thai experience!

This dish changed my life, it's so intense that it makes most other food seem boring
That's a great way to describe it!
Yes, be careful, once you tried it, there's no way back.
ok
@@PailinsKitchen what kind of steak I should get? Will skirt steak work? My mouth is already watering 😂
I am Muslim I like your Halal food ❤
My wife - also from Isarn in the northeast - makes larb often. And her namtok - often with pork instead of beef - is awesome. I usually end up eating too much: I'm full but it tastes too good to stop!
Any extra juice/dressing that doesn’t get fully absorbed by the roasted rice powder is great for dipping the sticky rice. Kind of the Thai version of an Italian family mopping up extra tomato sauce with bread. 😀
I made this dish for my bf last night and he nearly proposed. This is such a great recipe, thank you ❤
La comida Thai debe ser declarada patrimonio de la humanidad. Es fabulosa. Saludos Pailin desde Brasil.
This is my favorite dish, my grandma makes a lot of Thai food but this is always been my favorite with some fresh sticky rice.
I love how real this channel are, and there’s even a blooper
This channel is gems
Love from Malaysia
This dish reminds me of my days as a student studying abroad in Bangkok. I ate this for lunch almost every day!!! Thammasat University!!!!!
Pai, I own your beautiful cookbook and love this Waterfall salad. The toughest ingredient to find is decent fresh mint. I grew up in New Jersey, where all you need to do is plant mint under a leaky garden hose bib. It will take over the yard! Now I live in the desert, in Las Vegas. I haven’t had success growing mint here. So, when I see a nice bunch of fresh mint at the grocery store, it is my signal to prepare this delicious dish. I have acquired a Chinese pickle jar, and use it for fermented limes. They are wonderful to have on hand for lime juice in an instant. I use them to prepare this dish. Thanks for your channel, and your beautiful cookbook ❤️
As a half thai/Laos guy that grew up in America and having ate most types of food; thai food has the biggest list of foods that I love and enjoy.
This is my absolute favorite Thai dish. Thank you so much for posting this!
The way you translate the meaning of the dish is too perfect 🥰 loved it
Cannot wait to try this! And you are a joy to watch - thanks for a wonderful recipe and video.
I make this all the time. For my preference, I use charcoal to grill steak to a rare temp. I use dried red pepper 🌶 flakes and fresh peppers with slivers of cut keifer lime leaves 🍃. I only use fresh squeezed lime or lemon 🍋 juice.
I have been obsessed with this salad for years. Thank you for this!
Made this tonight. Didn't have lemon grass but it turned out Fantastic!! I use red onion instead of shallots and put fresh cucumber chunks in it over romaine lettuce. About 90% as good as my local authentic Thai restaurant.
This is one of my favorite dishes of all time, can't wait to try your recipe!
Great video! Sounds just super, and the Canadian beef site is just so helpful. Good sponsor, and just marvelous info there.
Your salad’s looks are Amazing. Mouthwatering. I’ll try it soon!
The Canadian Beef site is awesome. So helpful. Thank you for the info.
Looks so good, can’t wait to try this recipe too! ( along with many others you post!)
As always, keep smiling!
This is one of my favorite dishes in the world and now I can make it for myself! Thank you!!!
This looks amazing! I've been too lazy to get my grill set up, but I think this will be the recipe that motivates me. I usually order this without lettuce in restaurants, but I love the idea of making it myself.
Love your videos and the food your are making. Been following you for a long time and will never stop scrolling and drewling through your recipes.
Northeast citchen is my favourite!
Love from Sweden! 🙏🏻
Thank you for following for a long time!!
This looks absolutely delicious. I'll be cooking some up this weekend.
Excellent video. I make frequently. Maybe my all time favorite dish. My mouth is watering just watching the video. You can also add fresh basil. In addition to sticky rice I serve with cabbage leaves so you can put the salad in the cabbage leaves and eat like a taco.
I’m going grocery shopping to get the ingredients to make this steak salad for the umpteenth time! I’d never had the dish before seeing your recipe, but it looked so delicious. I couldn’t grind the toasted rice finely enough, so I bought a coffee grinder just for it. I can’t slice the lemongrass thinly enough, so it was a little chewy. I have found puréed lemongrass in a tube, so I think I’ll add that to the dressing. I’m lucky that my local Asian grocery store had all the ingredients, including the makrut lime leaves in the freezer! I will add some cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumbers this time. Maybe some sliced chilies? 🌶️
Bringing together our Picanha from south Brazil, where I live, with my love for Thailand and Thai cuisine! Pure perfection, I can't wait to cook it!
watching Pailin assembled the dish and imagine the toasted rice smells when mixed with the steaks is just mouthwatering 👍💯
Absolutely love this dish , beautiful flavours, all tastes so fresh. Delicious! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Just found this. I love steak salads at Thai restaurants. So decided to make one myself using this recipe (and I like that this is the “REAL” one as there are so many Thai steak salad recipes here in CZcams). It came out perfectly, and much more! Every ingredient worked well and together. I can taste each and everyone. Thank you very much Pailin for sharing!
It is so good that you can find related videos as well as the names of the food in the title are written in Thai.
I am enjoying the video you uploaded, and I am waiting for you to return to your daily life as soon as possible and travel to Bangkok as free as before.
Looks wonderful and delicious, never thought of making this, great share!👌
Omg YUM! I’m definitely going to try this! Love how it uses toasted rice along flavored with a kaffir lime leaf 😍
Make this dish often. It’s one of my faves. So so so good.
Made this last night. It was delicious! First time using picanha in a dish and it turned out really well. Thank you!
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE while teaching six years at ABAC! Now, as you suggested, show your viewers this recipe with prime tenderloin and stuff it into tacos with avocado!
This is Brilliant..Thank you for sharing Pailin's Kitchen.
Thank you for the recipe it really does look good 👍🏻
I made this the second time today. Just love it. Thanks 👍
I LOVE THIS RECEPIE! My favourite part for this is what in spanish is called "rabillo" and is the tip of the hip muscle at the bottom
Hi, Pailin! My Beloved One and I just made it and, uh, it's kind of life-changing! First: it truly is a Steak Salad instead of a Steak on a salad! Second: WTF is up with that toasted rice thingy?! It's amazing! What other recipes use it? Third: Nunc Cham at its finest! Fourth: That steak marinade is to die for! And this is coming from a steak purist (salt, pepper, medium-rare - anything else is a sacrilege!)! The whole composition is so playful, yet mature! And I totally understand how much willpower it takes not to eat it, especially at one moment of assembly! Pailin, thank you!❤🔥🌊
This is my fav Thai dish. Thank you!
Beautiful, very nice I will copy that for sure. your the best Ms Pailin
OK, this looks great! I tried your Crying Tiger recipe and loved it. Looking forward to trying this. Thank you! :)
great recipes love it thanks for sharing
The other popular version in Thailand is "Kor Moo Nam Tok" basically the same spice salad dressings but the meat is Pork Neck instead of Beef.
Great video! I’m not a fan of cilantro, so I will try this with arugula & parsley in place of cilantro. Looks like it will be a winner recipe!!! Thanks
Any kind of stake salad is always amazing
Hi Pallin , my familles really enjoy your Water Fall Steak Salad . How wanderfull it is 👍👏👏💜
This turned out SOOOO delicious 😋
I tried this when I travelled Bangkok, but didn’t know exact name and recipe. Thanks! I can try it at home now😀
Looks very nice, fresh and tasty. I can’t wait to try this recipe myself! 🇬🇧

Thanks You So Much For Sharing Your Video
Im drooling! I have everything here to make this. Yum
This looks absolutely in my dreams that I need to make it happen. YUMM!!
Hi, i‘m a german watcher of your channel. I‘m a thai-hobby-cooker. Your channel is great. My US english is average, but you speak very simple and clear. Thank you for your great dishes ans your explainations. Greetings from a Thai-cooking fan.
This is my favorite Thai dish. When I talk to someone who says they love Thai food they always talk about Pad Thai, Curry and maybe Drunken Noodles. I tell them that they have to expand a bit and try Larb (however else it may be spelled) and Nam Tok. And if they aren't trying the Tom Yum they are missing out!
you had me at steak waterfall. dear god in heaven i wish i could afford to make this. amazing!
Hi Pailin. Your Steak Salad looks Delicious. Thanks for the Tips. 😁😋😋
I can't wait to make it this weekend, looks tasty
This Thai recipe is one of my favorite, but most favorite one is Pad See Ew. Used to live in southeastern California and ordered Pad Se Ew 2-3 times a week.
This salad is very nutritious and looks super delicious! The meat is exactly to my taste - tender and juicy!
I've gone through at least 5lbs of beef making this in the last week, absolutely delicious. Thanks for another great recipe:)
I always enjoy watching you,i am from Philippines and we are almost similar when it comes to cooking...
Looks soo good!
This looks amazing!!! Slapping the table because it tastes sooooo good I can identify with😄
This is one of my favorite dishes at my favorite Thai restaurant in town. I’ve made it at home, too.
Adam's slightly evil laugh at 4:47 🤪
Lol you noticed :)
I just ate and so full but yet I'm drooling over this dish 🤤 😄
Enjoying your beautifully cooked steak video with moo manao flavour cup noodles😋😋😋
Love nam tok.Sep li li. 😋My wife has always made this with pork. I am going to ask her to use beef, next time. Looks good. Thanks for sharing your recipes!
Hi great salad really awesome and yummy
This is my favorite salat sharing its first place with som tam aka papaya salad.
Looks so good
Thank you, Pai. "Waterfall" is a lovely descriptor.
Real steak salad..nikmatnya luar biasa..sangat enak sekali
Looks delicious!!!
that looks sooooo good! but honestly, i think i would like it atop a green salad
Hello!
I had this dish in Iceland in 2003!!! (Have been to Thailand several times before and after that having beef salads there). I thought at that time this one had fallen on the floor because of the hard things/gravel in it... 😅.
Have a great day🖖
I was once told “Don’t sleep on Thai salads,” so when I went to the Thai restaurant around the corner from my house for lunch today, I decided to give this dish a try, knowing nothing about it. I’m gonna be honest, it’s only been an hour since I left the restaurant, but I’m probably going to follow your recipe and make it for dinner. 😂
I was waiting for this forever. We call it beef salad I believe it's the same thing. Just wanted to see how you made it and OMG! I'm making my wife do thus today
Great Video! Nice that you think of your mom...
Flank steak is nice for this.. slices nice and thin on the bias.. mmmm. Thanks Pai!
I fell in love with this dish in Phuket! So spicy yet so good! I had to ;earn to make Thai food because i love it so much!
Yummy 😋 looks delicious thank you for sharing keep in touch my friend ❣️
My momma is from Chiang Mai/Pharaoh! Northern Thai food is amazing
I commented on your Crying Tiger video, but after watching this video, I think I have my answer--though the restaurant called the dish Tiger Cry, it was actually a combination of Crying Tiger and Waterfall Salad. That dusty/powdery coating the toasted rice gives to the beef is addictive. Same for the nam jim jaew!
I made this night before last. I make it a little differently and with way more sauce but it is essentially the same thing. The flavors are stunning in this dish...super intense.
On a different subject, I was looking on your web site and could not find any recipe for Neua Dad Deow (Thai sun dried beef). I live in a part of the U.S. where I can dry it in about two hours so I make it all the time in the summer. Neua Dad Deow and Kao Neow is my go to lunch for motorcycle rides.
As a kid my mom always called this “Hot Beef” growing up and it was my absolute favorite!! Fast forward the first meal I cooked my date was this. He hated it but ate it anyway...we’ve been together for over 18 years 🤣🤣
He hated it? Wow he must have zero taste in good food but glad he ate it still and y'all together 😂🙌🏻
wow
A delicious recipe khop Kuhn ma khrap.I just wonder why my favorite noodle soup is also called kho tiaw nam tok….help much appreciated .Many thanks!
Thai is such a beautiful culture. I wish I could return and explore more of Eastern Thailand.
On behalf of all Thai, thank you for your compliment. But please don't expected too much. Every culture is beautiful in it's own way. Besides, TH is just a small country with many good and bad things/people, including culture you might have not seen yet, which some might offend you or others. Anyway, please known that ou are always welcome anytime you feel free to visit us.
Thai steak salad is probably my all-time favourite dish. And no, "steak salad" has never been salad-plus-steak for me: I grew up with "beef salad" being a standard summer dish, where a chunk of beef got chopped into cubes and then mixed with apple bits, pickles and fresh onions (and lots of black pepper) and mild vinegar so fruit and meat flavours would mix and create something new (but Thai steak salad is still better).
I served this dish once to all my friends in Middle East. Now they're addicted to it.
i am going to try this my husband enjoy the salad i made with your fish sauce and he loves it, i will do this steak also. thank you.
Love sticky rice. Thanks for such a beautiful recipe to go with the rice👍
ขอบคุณพี่สาวมากๆนะคะสำหรับสูตร กำลังทำทานคืนนี้เลยค่ะ love from Kelowna BC Canada 🇨🇦
Love this dish... never made it correctly with the roasted rice powder though, I will try it next time. Along with the 30 fresh Thai peppers I usually do. 😋
You can find the already roasted rice but fresh roast is the best way to go.
Awesome recipe beautiful lady! thanks for sharing...
We mash the name to “laab namtok” in my language cause it’s easier 😂😂 but I’ve been waiting for your recipe so I’m sooooo glad to see it finally!!
