The only time Doug can really be critical of a car is when he rents it himself. It would be interesting to see how he acts about a car (even an extremely expensive one) that he borrows while still being completely honest about everything pertaining to the vehicle

Doug suffered from not having an owner available for this video. I am a huge Doug fan, watching all his videos. However, I had a Z back in 2010 (and it was fairly outdated then) and went down the rabbit hole for the few years I had it. I modified it to address some of the gripes he mentioned. However, there are some big misses here, that are just because he didn’t do enough research before creating this video. My main issues are as follows:
- The “effects” setting involves the animation and “gauge swing” when starting the car.
- The tire reminder is worthwhile, because I typically got 3-5K miles out of a rear set, before they started slipping in even mild rain and required replacement
- The “key slot” is not to store your key. The keyless entry is optional (or was at one time) so the slot is where you inserted the key to start it. Even if you had the option (I did, mine was a loaded sport touring), it was still valuable because the slot charged the key batteries
- the visor extender was still useful when facing forward as it can slide behind the rear view mirror.
- The blank switches on the center console are for the heated seats (ventilated as well on the convertible) and yes, convertible top. The Recaro seats in the NISMO aren’t available with heating, ergo they are blanked out. Most Zs do have the heated seats.
- The red light in the center of the diffuser is a rear fog light in international markets. I agree it looks much better installed and is available as a brake light aftermarket.
- There is a spare tire in the Z. The subwoofer is actually clever packaging and sits in the upside down spare. If Doug had dug a little deeper, removing the black styrofoam around the sub, he would’ve realized the sub was just sitting in the wheel and there is indeed a spare, hence the very shallow load floor.
Overall, I agree the Z is horribly outdated, but when I bought mine, it was much smaller and more nimble than a mustang, but with far more power than a Miata, S2000 or MR2. It bridged a gap between sport roadster and muscle car, that the other didn’t do, though perhaps it did neither well. Regardless, I enjoyed mine years ago, and it’s sad that it’s exactly the same today. I found it funny that mine was a 40th Anniversary Edition from 2010, and the 50th Anniversary Edition was still the same, virtually untouched model. 🤦🏻♂️

Before I bought the car I said “wow no spare tire that’s crazy.” Fast forward 2 years later, really Doug 😂😂. Nissan does hide it pretty well though…….he’s a reviewer shouldn’t be making these types of mistakes he’ll have somebody thinking they really don’t have a spare tire during a emergency situation/flat
Once you drive it with a single exit exhaust, possible even equal length headers. It sounds so exotic.
@@BuildFly Oh yeah, an exhaust makes a huge difference. I modified mine with a Fast Intentions 18" resonated exhaust with their resonated high flow cats, as well. It sounded great, and people would ask me all the time if I had done a V8 swap, because it sounded so deep and smooth.

Doesn't help he was driving the auto. When I drove it, I couldn't believe how slow the gearbox was. It completely destroyed any fun I was potentially going to have in the car.

People complain about 370z being outdated, but when Nissan stopped making it everybody complained that "nobody makes true raw sports cars anymore!"
Frankly, I don't know how people have so much money that they can get bored of their car and buy a new one every couple of years, or trade up to the new model of the same car. If I end up buying an RX-8 S2, or a 370z (with heated seats and sunroof) or a Corvette (C4 or C5) I'm going to take care of it and drive it until it blows up or wears out. By then, there will be a flood of additional vehicles that I've never tried before that I can buy on the used market.
I think being a car reviewer can really break one's perspective. Most of us drive five to ten cars throughout our lifetimes. These guys are driving five to ten a month!

I love the z sound. It’s very unique other than sounding very similar to the GTR without the turbo sounds. A nice set of exhaust that aren’t too overwhelming really makes it sing.

“Outdated” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For example hydraulic steering, naturally aspirated power, manual transmission option. Honestly the styling still looks great. I understand it’s not exactly worth it paying 40-50k for a car that’s 10 years old. But I think the car still looks relative and besides being slightly low on power, I think it’s still a very enticing package. I used to live next to a tuning shop that specialized in these v6 engines (350/370z, Infiniti’s) and with a simple turbo kit, they were pushing close to 500 to the wheels. Some were in the 600’s. Basically a Nissan GT-R but rear wheel drive and stick shift.
Is 350 horsepower really "low on power"? I'd say that's pretty much exactly what a car like this should have. Once you start getting into 400 horsepower range, you're really pushing the market you're in.

I've had 5 Z cars and the 2016 Nismo is my latest. Let me tell you, this car rocks. It's perfect. It's beautiful and this car is fast enough and priced right for what you get in a Z. I absolutely love it.

Everyone has different standards, some people I guess have none.
Old and outdated are getting more and more valuable than new and trendy. If you make a car that's look old or outdated, 3 pedals, a shifrer, RWD and fun in this day and age, people will do anything (may including doing Fast anf Furious truck heist with Civics) to get their hands on that car.
Go for it. I did and I'm still absolutely thrilled everytime I get into it. It's an old school RWD car with plenty of hrsprs and a 6spd manual. also, I think it has a timeless design. The side lines, the huge a55 rear fenders....looks just so good.
I've always set my clocks 5 minutes faster to avoid being late for things. But I always end up subtracting 5 from the displayed time and am late regardless.
How about you set your time to normal time? Or ask your friend to change it back to normal time when you are not paying attention?

That key slot isn't for storage, you put the key in there in case the key fob battery dies. It senses the key and turns on the car. Also this is not a fully loaded version of the car. It comes with a touch screen if you get that option. But like usual Doug does minimal research and then makes up stuff about how things work.
It's time for a new Z and a new GTR. Been time for about 5 years now. Nissan getting lazy.

There is a spare tire there. You need to remove the subwoofer by unscrewing the center. If you look there is a jack and tool set here. Remove the foam covers and you have your spare.

I don't know about the prices in the US. But I wouldn't be surprised if you can find a 1 year old in mint condition for less than half the money if you play the seller a little. After that mod the hell out of it.

The vvel tech is actually still pretty cool tech. It’s a fantastic engine. The car is def over priced, and you didn’t note the nismo exhaust is different. Also, the 7at with the rev matching downshifting.

370Z is a great car, but their owners are so insecure because it's not better value than its rivals. Just accept the fact that you own a v6 with an old economy car attached to it and be happy. Why do you need Doug's validation?

That red reflector on the rear bumper is likely the location of the rear fog light. Rear fog lights aren't mandated in the usa so they probably just placed a reflector there

You forget about it fast and have few minutes spared in case you need.
Works for me perfect and even my kids are used to it now.

Doug really did the Z boys dirty with this one. He could have taken a “used sports car” approach but he saw it as a new car. Nobody buy this new so this approach that he took really is impractical. If you look up 370Zs on the used car market. It really has it all. Price, performance, look. At 20k 370z is a good deal if you don’t want a brz that’s too slow.
I realized I was a Z-Fanboy when every gripe he had about the car I either said I liked or didn’t matter to me, and some I even scoffed at
Yeah, but so much of the complaints he raises on the Z are things that don't matter to me one bit. It's tough for me to understand why someone wants infotainment screens and gizmos and gadgets in a dedicated sports car. The whole point of a car like that is the driving experience and to feel the road, hear the exhaust and hit the back roads at an affordable price tag. I'm not arguing it's overpriced compared to what else is on the marketplace, but it's also been in a unique position for many years. There haven't been many Japanese sports cars on sale since 2009 that offer the same driving experience and cache as the Z, like it or not.
Not at the $46k price though.
Now the base 370Z at $30K is a very good buy.

Hmm. I just got a really good deal on a 370Z, and the one thing I'm noticing that's wrong in this review is that the infotainment system actually does have a touch screen. And that's on a 2013.
Oh, and there is a spare. It goes around/under the subwoofer.
My ‘09 infotainment is touch screen as well. His review overall seemed strange and misinformed on multiple points.

Got a 2020 sports touring certified $30k 1500 miles. Has more than the nismo minus the HP increase. Better seats, the 3 buttons are for heated seats and trunk release. Love the Z . Fun and fast. I do miss the blind spot detection but $8 blind spot mirrors work just as well without the beeps. It’s a hell of a car and the 400z comes out soon. If you can find a sport or sport touring in your price range grab it. I would stay away from the base model unless you are going to to tear it apart anyway to make it a drift car.

The 3 gauges on the middle of the dash are a throwback to previous z generations. My 280zx has oil pressure, voltage and a clock
We can tell. It would be a good place to add more useful gauges, especially if you are going to tune it.

I love it, everything about it is perfect for my style, and driving habits. It has flaws, but is perfect for me. I'm glad they're overpriced. No ones gonna' buy em, then out of the few people who do, will mostly end up selling them to get the new 400Z, and then I'll be able to afford it. Then, years later, the Nismo will be the most desired Z of that generation, and the car will end up going up in value, and paying for itself. Possibly even going on to be a rare classic, worth tons due to its rarity, versus driving experience... I'm glad it doesn't have all those nannies, or a modern guage cluster. That's the type of stuff that ruins a car for me. I end up having to do tons of research on how to bypass, and disable all that junk. I want information on the engine, my speed, rpms, and the time, and that's it. That Nismo 370Z is one of the greatest sports car ever made. Doug may not get it, but history will show us that it was one of the last great analog sports cars, and ALL of the last generation of analog sports cars are going to end up skyrocketing in value, aroud 20, 30 years from now... So don't believe Dougs hype. Get that car with a manual 6 speed, and I guarantee you fall in love with it... and it'll only be around $25k by 2025...
As much as I also love this car, I really don't think it will be one of the standouts down the road as far as collectibles go. Nothing about it is really that "special", and I can't see it holding the same value as stuff like the 90s Japanese cars. You could be right for all we know, just my take.

I’ve owned the 90s 300zx TT as well as the couple of 350z(DE). Never owned the 370z but I did have the g37 sedan and coupe. I currently own a 2014 q50 basically majority of them are VQ engines. With the Z line I really love my old 300zx TT I get so much respect from people on the road and compliments than my 350z. Especially that mine was pretty modded love the power on that thing didn’t have much off the line but has top end power. I had the ugly red or maroon carpet interior lol but I changed it out all to black even the door panels to black, changed the seats to leather man oh man it was a lot of work to do that. Swapped it out from a different 300zx.
To be fair. the five minutes ahead thing is so that when you look at the clock, you forget that it's five minutes ahead and take it at face value, so you show up early to things. Like how people do it on their watches for that quick glance.
