    Exactly... get a camera and use it.
    As a Canon user, using older cameras while waiting for a shift in their lineup, I needed higher frame rates, EVF, better image quality, peak focusing and the list goes on. I was watching the market and at the time, the a7II did not have the autofocus I was used to. But with the release of the a7III and the pathetic history of outdated and crippled Canon cameras flooding the market, it was clear to me that my Canon days were done. I switched to Sony and got back to work producing a better product because the a7III tool itself is excellent. And, after seeing the recent release from Canon, again shipping a camera with major shortcomings built right in, my decision to pack it in was validated.
    I’m no longer shopping, or care what else is on the market, I’m excited and happy with Sony and their clear agenda to push photographers and videographers forward. The a7III is a workhorse, it does ‘everything’ I need.

    I think the whole banding issue isnt that bad. I mean its not great. But if your trying to pull up the shadows 5 stops, then the image in those areas are going to have so much noise. The banding isnt going to make a difference. That said, Canon R is having the same issues and actually is slightly more noticable. Northrup made a video about this and while he did point out there are times in some photos that you could have to pull up the shadows that much. It looks like the banding may just be a by product of the AF system on both camera systems. So we cant get all pissy at Nikon having this issue if Canon also is having the same issue. The question is why does Sony not have this issue? What did Sony do to resolve this. Also I shoot in Live View using DPAF on my 80D here in the office. So in theory I should have already noticed the issue if its an effect of using the on board sensor focusing (DPAF). But I never have.. So this is something I am looking closely at and hope that this can be resolved with a software update. But to be honest, the banding is something most photogs are not going to ever encounter. At least that's my opinion.

    Of course cameras have issues, because opinion influencers are pushing for features and manufacturers race for speed. They rush products to the market. I didn't see banding in the Z7, I returned it for different reasons - it's incomplete, like half-cooked food.

      "Opinion Influencers" tend to be a bunch of morons, from what I can tell...

      These people are just coordinated trolls. Enjoy your camera. To see this banding you have to post-process --- A LOT. People for some reason pour a lot of hate into Nikon. The best thing you can do is take great pictures and make sure you post them on the Internet.

    Hence I didn’t get the Z7. I was going to get the D850, but then waited to see what the mirror less would be able to give. Looks like I’m a gonna be waiting a lonnnnnng time. Note to self: or just wait till the D850 falls to about 2K and fuck mirror less.

    None of these issues bother me much. I'm a Nikon hybrid shooter - I don't know why you'd buy the Z7 over the D850 for photography. The Z6 is a different proposition tho. It is more suited to the hybrid shooter it's iso will be better plus theres a big price difference. I think the Z6 will sell - for me it'll predominantly be used for video.

    • @JeffSelf
      @JeffSelf Před 6 lety +1

  • @DarrellYoung
    @DarrellYoung Před 6 lety

    I have a Z7 and I love it. Banding is such an esoteric issue. If anyone is such a weak photographer that they underexpose an image badly enough to need four to six stops of brightening, they need to get into a different business or hobby. At the very least an image brightened by 4 to 6 stops is going to look awful and be basically unusable, with or without banding. If I am going to judge any camera, it won't be on something like how awful an image looks when it is horribly underexposed and pushed back to normal brightness. I will judge a camera on normal image quality. The Z7 has image quality virtually identical to the Nikon D850. I agree with you that banding is a non-issue for anyone except certain CZcams vloggers looking for maximum viewers-negativity sells well on CZcams-or someone who has no idea how to make a good exposure and so must brighten their massively underexposed images.
    Yesterday, I took a picture with my Z7 handheld at 1.2 seconds and it is perfectly sharp. Now that's something I've never been able to do with my Nikon D850. However, the in-body image stabilization (IBIS) in the Z7 is excellent and a game changer for Nikon shooters. This Nikkor Z 12-24mm f/4 S lens is sharper edge to edge than my US$2,200 AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED pro lens. I can shoot with the S lens wide open and still have perfectly sharp images, edge to edge. Can't say that with my Nikon D850. The Z-mount allows a lens with a huge rear element to put light on the sensor with very little bending, leading to a lack of chromatic aberration and very high sharpness. I can't say the same about my Nikon D850 with its 59-year-old F-mount.
    I now carry the 1.3 pound (575 gram) Nikon Z7 with me everywhere I go. Even with battery and lens, it is so much lighter and smaller and easier to carry with me without tiring myself out. Having a lightweight camera with a massive 45.7 megapixel BSI sensor is a wonderful thing. Horses for courses applies here. For most people the Nikon Z7 is the perfect camera. For others the D850 is the best there is. I have both and I use both. However, the Z7 is getting a lot more use today. I want to encourage Nikon to continue down the mirrorless path. Later cameras may be even better, but my new Z7 has many features (e.g., silent shooting, EVF live histogram, final image preview before committing) that even my Nikon D850 does not have and it is here now. I feel very content with my edgy and quite lovely Nikon Z7.

    pretty much a non issue. On the scale of 1 to a 100, this is a 1. I mean lack of dual cards, buffer, and bad AF rate much much much higher.

    LOL - Mark, I don't know why every time I see you have a new video out and read the title I think "Oh boy, here we go, rant time!", and then I am so pleased and amused at how effortlessly you present such a reasonable and well thought out monologue on the topic at hand. Why do I tend to presume that you're just going to go off and tear into someone's ass each time? Haha.
    On the topic, isn't banding an issue with all the new cameras under certain lighting conditions and settings? I think I've seen the same issue commented about on pretty much every brand recently released, whether it's due to EVF, electronic shutter or something else.

    • @thephotovideoshow
      @thephotovideoshow  Před 6 lety +1

      I don’t know why you do that! Subtle ad hominem is more my thing unless it’s an overt stab at me or my friends. Thanks Dave!
      My presumption is that it has more to do with the on-chip phase detect AF. Which, from my perspective, I’d rather have banding then no face detection.

  • @peoplez129
    @peoplez129 Před 6 lety +1

    I think the banding is a HUGE issue because it affects one of the main features that people buy full frame camera's for: Low light performance. Since banding is an issue that happens in low light like indoors or night photography, it's untenable to have such an issue that will plague your photography. It's like having a cracked lens and having to photoshop the crack out of your photo's.....only worse, because it's like buying a $2500 camera that comes with a cracked lens. Since the banding is effectively meshed with the photo, it's not easy to remove either. Let's be serious, if it was any brand but Nikon who had this issue, people would be pulling their hair out over it. Nikon doesn't deserve a pass.

    • @thephotovideoshow
      @thephotovideoshow  Před 6 lety

      I’ve never given an Nikon a pass. I’ve taken the biggest, nastiest shit on them several times over. But I think it may have been a judgment call on their part. The on-chip phase detect is most likely the culprit. And Nikon needs a really reliable and accurate AF system if they ever intend to compete with Canon or Sony.

    What's with the layup you think real mirrorless camera companies got those benefits when they launched their cameras 5 years ago? NO their marketing departments whipped their fanboys into action, condemning every little work around.. Until those manufacturers/ pioneers sent out updates.. What's Nikon's excuse it is a Sony sensor.. Thought they could out code them on their own sensor? Now they are stuck with Canon's dynamic or lack thereof range. Guess it ain't so easy.. Hate you now after this video.. Fortunately for you, your firmware gets updated regularly and you will probably fix this issue.. And you will not suffer from the fanboy bandwagoning.. Just focusing on your peaking, and your eye detection in the comments is in need of calibration. Forget about those mirrorless haters.. Their one card never fails.. They will always be angry at anything and anyone different. How is that for comment bait?
