Simply one of the best bands ever to exist. Killer singer and rhythm section, and they would've been great with either David -- but two phenomenal guitarists, working in the same band and liking it? Very, very rare stuff. I cried when they broke up.
Malford used to walk by a house my brother and I were renting, back in the day, and would always come over and sit on the stoop and crack a few pecans with us. he was a witty and very talented fellow. I wish Storyville could have lasted longer.
Saw Malford about two weeks ago at Saxon Pub. Dude is still nails. Nicest guy in the world too. Thanked him outside the door for a great show and he gave me a huge, sincere hug. Sweaty.
I feel fortunate to have seen them many times growing up in Austin. Takes me back to high school... I miss it... What a great time. Ian Moore, Storyville, Stephen Bruton, Eric Johnson... these where the guys that inspired me to play music.
You hit that right on the head brother! Same for me... Storyville's "Born Without You" got me playing again. There's no bands like this or the ones you mentioned in OMAHA NE but there should be! Cry Of Love was also a great band. The song Peace Pipe is kick ass! :)
Man, I wish these guys would get back together. They had it all and Malford Milligan could sing could straight from the heart - Soul meets the Blues. He sings an old Sam Cooke song "A Change is Gonna Come" on a gospel album that will give any blues fan chills.
Malford is one great guy, well they all are, last time I saw them was on the beach in Galveston in the 90's. Malford can kick out the jams, also love me some Arc Angels
Wow! What have I missed!! These guys rock! I was told about Storyville last night from a close friend I haven't seen in years. He told me about theses guys and he was spot on! Love em! Wish they were still playing together
There's an interview with David Grissom on the Sweetwater channel where he says he turned down being in Rod Stewart's touring band to join Storyville, he thought they would be huge. Grissom says he finds it funny now when so many people tell him what a great band they were 'You're fifteen years too late'...
David Grissom and his band play a standing gig at Saxon Pub in South Austin Texas at 6 pm every Tuesday. Occasionally Malford will show up and sing this timeless hit with the band. It is awesome! There is no cover for the early show, but please support our local musicians by helping fill the tip jar when it gets passed around.
I remember when I was about 20-21 and this song made the rounds on our local public radio station (WYEP Pittsburgh). I remember liking this song and I wonder why Storyville never went on to bigger & better things.
I saw these guys many times in the 90s at The Fabulous Satellite Lounge in Houston and a few times at Antones. Even saw their farewell show at the Satellite when they broke up. (Kenny Wayne Shepard did a cameo with them that night). ALL these guys are phenoms in their own way. Sing it Malford !
Grissom is a beast on guitar!!...The whole hybrid picking thing....that's what I'm trying like hell to get under my fingers...It adds so much more character and depth...Fantastic song...Doesn't hurt to have a great backing band and a phenomenal singer...
Love this band....every song off CD is amazing even my fathers fav and used in his OB DvD. Would love to see or hear more often. Father introduced to us young and still love and wanna hear. Should come to Georgia or close by. These guys are great just need more broadcasting!!
The Voice... If it's even real... Screwed the pooch on this one. I knew I had Malford was familiar and they I realized I own a Storyville recording. Good news? I spent the morning listening to Sweet Cherry Soul and I feel like I've reconnected with an old friend. Sing on Malford!
I can't believe this was 10 years old before I ever heard of them. Malford (and the entire band) is really special stuff. One of the great things I discovered when I lived in Texas.
great band!only recently found out bout them!!its such a travesty these guys didn go anywhere!one of the best blues/soul/gospel/country bands ever!how could they not hav had success?!are people deaf?
Gedacktpommer - I took some guitar lessons from him (David Holt) a few years ago in Austin. He has an album called Perpetual Motion on Blue Corn records. It's a great album.
Please go back next season of the Voice and try again. Do your own songs. I loved listenting to you when you toured with Storyville, wish you would get back together. I knew you before you said your name on the Voice. Their loss. You are too humble. Please keep making your wonderful music. God Bless and good luck.
If I'm not mistaken, David Grissom wrote the intro "hook" for Pink Houses (John Cougar Mellencamp). Mellonhead totally ripped him off, Stole the riff and ran with it. Didn't even give him writing creds. Shortly afterward, Storyville was born.
Excellent clip here, THX for sharing! Question: Who is the other guitarist opposite Grissom? He plays a really tasty solo as well. Almost looks like Ty Tabor...???
Does anyone know who Tommy Shannon is currently playing for? And is Tommy Layton still drumming for Kenny Wayne Shepherd or with someone else? I love these guys as well!
Laughed out loud, at, were it I in your situation - because I have gone full tilt into learning my Les Paul - and teaching myself how to really play. I'm doing a lot of amateur but similar playing and this kid... this kid... I am lost for words but these names just came to mind: Elvis, uh...Elvis, and, er, Elvis. Meaning, The Best There Is Right Now and the guitar, too? I'm loading up and passing along.

Song still brings tears to my eyes after all these years...absolutely incredible.
I feel fortunate to have seen them many times growing up in Austin. Takes me back to high school... I miss it... What a great time. Ian Moore, Storyville, Stephen Bruton, Eric Johnson... these where the guys that inspired me to play music.
Best Band from the 90s…. Hands down! I love you Storyville! So glad I got to meet these guys! THE BEST!
Storyville, David Grissom and Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes. This is what got me to start playing again.
You hit that right on the head brother! Same for me... Storyville's "Born Without You" got me playing again. There's no bands like this or the ones you mentioned in OMAHA NE but there should be! Cry Of Love was also a great band. The song Peace Pipe is kick ass! :)
I can't adequately describe how much I love this!! And it's good to see David Holt taking a solo on this version too :-))
Just breaks my heart these guys aren't playing anymore.
I saw this band live back in the day. One of the best shows I ever saw!
Some of the most amazing guitar work ever on this version
what a voice and of course what an amazing band!! they should have been huge...

One of the most underrated bands of all time.. David Grissom is a genious.

Can't believe Malford didn't make it on The Voice, what a travesty...... Luv ya man, you always did it for me.

In case you didn't know, that is Stevie's Drummer and Bass player in this band.
How have I never heard of David Holt?!? Awesome player, awesome band, and DG is already one of my favourite players. Strewth!
Holt is freakin amazing. Such a fabulous player.

Came here cause of my hometown's favorite strummer mister Grissom, but have stayed as a fan of this whole group. 'Soul' is right!
This is just the best stuff ever...I've had their work since it came out and listen to it regularly...there are very few singers better than Malford.
Malford is dripping with soul
holy crap I'm moving to Texas they Rock
Grissom is a beast on guitar!!...The whole hybrid picking thing....that's what I'm trying like hell to get under my fingers...It adds so much more character and depth...Fantastic song...Doesn't hurt to have a great backing band and a phenomenal singer...

This is a Great new classic song to me.
@phildirt3 Yes, that's Chris Layton on drums, and Tommy Shannon on bass, both former members of Double Trouble.....
Love this band....every song off CD is amazing even my fathers fav and used in his OB DvD. Would love to see or hear more often. Father introduced to us young and still love and wanna hear. Should come to Georgia or close by. These guys are great just need more broadcasting!!

what a great song and band !! The best ever.
awesome, just awesome voice!!!!
Just saw Malford get REJECTED on the Voice. I'm still in a state of shock. Sure undermines the credibility of that show.

Greate song, guitar and voice!!!
Great show last night at Saxon Pub. Keep your roll on!
well this is a great thing i just found,i like
I see Chris Layton is on the drums *( Stevie Ray Vaughns drummer )* - excellent drummer and so very under-rated amongst his peers.
If I'm not mistaken, David Grissom wrote the intro "hook" for Pink Houses (John Cougar Mellencamp). Mellonhead totally ripped him off, Stole the riff and ran with it. Didn't even give him writing creds. Shortly afterward, Storyville was born.
Tommy Shannon on bass from SRV Double Trouble also Warren. Saw these guys in Atlanta a few years back. Hated to see them break up!
