[Mono] Live appearance on an eclectic USTV program, backed by the house band, which includes Hiram Bullock on guitar; Don Alias on percussion; Philippe Saisse on keyboards; Tom Barney on bass; and Omar Hakim on drums. Hal Willner was the creative genius behind this special program.
Apologies for the slight audio glitch at the 3 minute mark. Mark it up to the age of the tape.

I don't give a damn what anyone else says. When he was alive he was one of the best guitar players on the planet!!!! Such a shame he was taken too soon.........
he saved the life of EC by switching heli..
Amen to that !
Still is !!!
He lived just for playing, not everybody gets the chance.
I can't imagine anyone disputing you 😮👍✌️❤️🌼
No disrespect to Double Trouble, but that is the best version of my favourite song that I have ever heard.
You hear people say Stevie was one of the best. You can shorten that. Stevie was the best. Period.
There are a lot of greats in the history of 20th century, western pop music, but no guitar player offered more.
This backup band was actually filled with VERY talented and accomplished musicians.... They were still blown away by SRV... you should check out when SRv was on Arsenio... Arsenio's band was amazed just by his warming up
them boys is keepin right up with him thats for sure..
Funk was so heavy on that stage, surprised it didn’t collapse after the first 30 seconds...
Almost collapsed into a black hole! They were all on fire!!
Yeah, but the other dude on the Strat needs to dial it back. Stevie is the star and the dude is distracting. The director and cameraman knew this and angled him out as much as possible.
@@bill9989 Other dude is legendary Hiram Bullock and he is in just right place in mix!
5:13 Lord have mercy!!!! RIP that high E String 🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥
SRV is an exceptional guitarist but nobody ever comments on what a great vocalist he is. Not only is he the master of this style, he created it. Nuff said.
I think it's because his guitar skills are in the top 10 ever in history and his brilliant strong guttural blues voice gets underrated
His vocals dripped with soul and they spoke so much more than just the words. I agree with your comment.
I’ve thought the same man. He’s got a killer voice forsure
his vocal was equal to his playing, all in one package, that is why the word genius applies,he was really something
I thought the same thing less than halfway thru it, too. He is "on" here, extra sharp chops, Lots of vocals in the vocals, all kinds of flair & heavy struttin', you know?
Every time I watch his videos, I realize what the world lost all those years ago. Very few have been his equal , if any. What a shame that the world lost him so soon.
You know you a Bad Man when you pop a String on national TV just pull it off show everyone and go on to next song with no panic. That's A Bad Ass Bass Player!!!!!!WOW!!
Yeah I seen this on TV I was twenty-seven years old. I am 63 years old today rest in peace Stevie Ray Vaughan
That is one badass house band.
He's making them LOOK good!!!😂
My husband was a BIG Stevie Ray fan. Just wish I had found this before my husband passed away in September. He would have really enjoyed seeing this. He introduced SRV to me.
Ditto Kitty.....huge fan here, just found this on my feed. Hope you are well and I'm sure your husband would be dancing to this!
I'm betting your husband is enjoying SRV and Hendrix live where's he's at.
@Marcus Harjo oh, yes. Have thought about this a lot. Can you imagine heaven with all our musicians playing together? Tom Petty was the one that hit me bad.
@Marcus Harjo He was not as big of Hendrix fan as me. When we met at 19 in 1974, he was in to CCR and John Denver. He was also the one who introduced me to my absolute favorites, Dave Gilmour and Floyd.💗
What a legend,never forget this man❤
Stevie was a humble guitarist who acknowledged everyone's contribution to music. But Stevie Ray Vaughan was built different. He perfected his craft to a level in my opinion to which no one yet has achieved. Greatly missed. RIP Stevie Ray. You are greatly missed 🥲
I was lucky enough to see SRV live back in the mid 80’s.The man was a player. He could bend railroad ties with those hands, that battered old Strat took a beating with his playing style. What a loss to music world.✌️
I hadn't heard this. So glad I did it before I died. (I am 82)
Bless your heart!
Only 82 that's young !
you are just starting bro keep going strong
you still have a couple years left in you. peace be with you
Too old to rock and roll too young to die!
No auto tune here folks. Just pure talent and skill; the rest of the band is absolutely fantastic.
Man not only was Stevie a master of the strat but he could also sing pretty well.
yeeaaaaa
He got all the groove in his pocket and so talentfull!!!
Great voice!
His voice is like honey over gravel!
In 1984 Stevie won two WC Handy Awards, for instrumentalist AND for Entertainer. The blues is sort of held at arms length by some. The Handy organization has worked to change that. The awards are held in Memphis yearly, and are legit. On the podium while accepting the award, Stevie broke down and wept. He was inconsolable. Finally he gathered himself and apologized. He explained that guitar had been a natural occurrence, but that he was humbled by the recognition of his vocal talent by “people that truly knew”. He was still unknown to the general public, still hoping that his talent and passion would support him- something that eluded 99% of blues men before him. True award, true talent, true story.
He was and is the most talented beautiful humble soul that ever touched my heart couldn’t listen to him for awhile was to painful this world lost a true beautiful soul rip Stevie your are loved and missed ❤
Stevie's greatness is reflected in the joy of the musicians. Look at the smiles on their faces as they play!
Right on! I noticed that, too. Even Tom Barney was happy about his broken guitar string.
Yep, they were groovin’, smiling, and dancing!
Indeed
Settle down bend over boy who cracks a smile fulla pile.....
You couldn't chisel those smiles off🤣💯👍🏿🤘🏿
How can this be 30 years ago??? God, I miss SRV.
Incredible band!! You can easily see that they were almost overwhelming for Stevie, but in a powerful positive way, it showed in his breathing and playing!! Omar Hakim is a powerful drummer!!! @4:20 Stevie takes a deep breath and realizes they have the song DOWN and he really cuts loose! Wow!!! Rest In Peace Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Sanborn.
I NEVER get tired of watching and listening to Stevie play. Still sad about his passing to this day and thinking about what might have been. My all time favorite.
Yes ❤
That voice! We don't talk about it enough!
I KNOW RIGHT 🎤
Such a tragedy for music that the world lost Stevie.
You will travel oceans of time before you ever hear anything like this again .
SRV is my G.O.A.T. Every time I hear him, it brings a tear to my eye, just from missing him…
😂
Stevie left a HUGE hole in music. Nothing close to him before and nothing like him since he left... way too early. I am fortunate to be living in a time with such amazing music.
WELL HOW CAN ANYONE TOP THIS MUSIC AND THROWING DOWN ON THE GUITAR STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN HAS IT SEWED UP .....!!!!
Normally you see SRV beeak strings, but not the bass player! THIS IS AWESOME, the band is in 7heaven
Steve Ray in my opinion is the greatest guitarist 🎸 of all time 👏🙌✨️👍🇺🇸
top ten for sure!
I think he's #1 I think even Duane Allman would agree. Now that would be really great to see. 😮 Stevie Ray Vaughn and Duane Allman 🎉✌️❤️🌼
You absolutely KNOW IT!!!😊❤❤❤
A stage full of real professionals. Makes me want to go back in time.
what for ? makes me wanta make sure kids don't become braindead computer game addicts and waste their lives on that dead end street
Same here.
Agreed, Great musicians
God that is all I can think--I feel such grief and wish I could turn the clock back to the 80s or 90's
Bass player broke a string, ripped it off and played on 3 string style like a boss!
I heard about a bass player that broke all for Strings but that son-of-a-b**** kept playing all night long so I heard
lol Stevie looked at it and just went right on to the next song with no delay
@@zorroonmilkavitch1840 And that was me
@@bekchanovj tommy the cat was my name...and I say unto thee
That whole band is nuts. That drummer was on fire!
The fact that he plays both musics better than studio version says something about how talented he was!
SRV the greatest guitar player of all time!!!!! That dude on the bass sure can pound it also.
Oh my lawd......Stevie Ray just assaulted that stratocaster. He just manhandled the guitar and bent it to his will. Man, I sure do miss his playing.....he became a guitar legend in the short time he was here.....just imagine what he would have done by now.....he had gone through the trials of addiction and came out on the winning side....his best years were still in front of him......gone too soon.
Amen to that sky was the limit
aint that the way with all the good ones!
Amen to that. Stevie was a master.
The brightest burn out the quickest.
Who knew. Stevie Ray would graduate to Heaven so soon.
The fluid playing. This backing band was on point. This is crazy good.
This is perfect. Just perfect. He is so good it’s beyond human.
I love everything about him! He was an alien! The mother ship took him back too soon!
3:00 Band is cruising gently along for the ride
3:45 Ignition - SRV lights the fuse
4:45 Band is all in
5:00 Religious experience
"Ignition - SRV lights the fuse" is the best description I ever heard for srv! :) love it
Seriously..I love Double Trouble but with these guys it’s like SRV in IMAX
Man, the bass player broke a string! That's awesome!
Got to see SRV in concert in the early eighties opening for The POLICE!Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
When you break a bass string and you tell Stevie I'll manage with 3. Phaaaaawwwk!!! How am I just coming across this amazing video in February 2020. Better late than never i guess.
March lol

im later than you and still incredibly blown away by a song , ive played this in bar bands,,,, but not like that OMG!!!
I have been and remain still an avid fan of Stevie Ray. I first discovered him in the 90s and have never been disappointed with his musical vision. The man was a genius. Miss him greatly.
I agree.
OMG.............this is what the world is missing now.... so so sad
I feel ya.
I love Double Trouble, but I've never seen Stevie with a bassist with this much (string-breaking) groove. It's like a whole new level of SRV.
he was the perfect bass player for SRV's style. He played that bass the same way Stevie played his strat. With intensity
Truly!!!
The guy is talented. But as someone who saw Double Trouble AND the Vaughn Brothers over 30 times, you make it sound like Shannon (and Layton) was a lesser talent. Completely untrue. Stevie put his group together for a reason. Tommy, Chris and later Reese were unparalleled. Don’t just be the guy on CZcams looking for “that comment”. And CZcams.....placing ads at 5:30 is a sacrilege. You guys have no soul.
@@allenkennedy6748 I agree, Tommy Shannon was an absolute monster blues bass player and Layton could play that shuffle groove as good as anyone. This house band is great but shannon and Layton were not just side men, they were great players. They were a rock solid rhythm section.
@@allenkennedy6748 I mean, it’s Apple n oranges man….you can’t compare the two. Its like telling a plumber a hammer is the best tool. Time and place.
I was born well after SRV died. There's many insanely talented guitar players now a days. But there isn't any with the absolute power, feel and soul that players like SRV and Hendrix had. Maybe someday
HE'S DEAD YES,BUT IF YOU 17 TO 35 YEARS OLD NOW,PLEASE DON'T LET STEVIE'S MUSIC DIE AS YOU GET OLDER.
Hiram Bullock. So good. R i p.
What a mind-bendingly amazing guitarist he was.
I never thought I could ever see and hear both legends together, SRV and Omar Hakim! In fact, every musician is a powerhouse here. What an incredible tight performance. You'd believe they'd all been playing together since forever!!!
Omar (one of my favorite drummers) is brilliant, versatile beyond words, and _just_ the work he did with, for example, DIre Straits is a master class in modern rock drumming.
@@oneanddone7992 dont leave out Weather Report
And his work with Sting was exactly the sound Sting needed back then.
Omar is the man. One of the finest drummers ever.
You actually hear them together every time David Bowies “Lets Dance” comes on the radio. They did that session together. This was a real treat though
They just rolled one up and smoked it.
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan open for Robert Plant at the Spectrum in Philly in 1989. Glad I did.
Hiram's energy and respect for SRV is just making me cry.
Omar's drums just fucking kill it for SRV.
The whole band is masters SUPPORTING WHAT THEY KNOW IS MASTER!
God works well at times.
If this was my house band,i would never leave home...just absolutely nailed it!
Who the hell has a 'house band' in their own home? Even weathy people don't have something like that.
Summer of 89 was hot and long. I was 19 years at the time.In Step where just realesed and i taped the record to cassette, drow from Sweden to Roskilde Festival with my first girlfriend and saw Stray Cats perform a suberb gig, i stood ten feet from Brian Setzer 👀- it was great… Drove an old Volvo Sport Edition, 74 - i played that cassette with Stevie Ray so its got worn out on that trip - great memory 🎶🎶👍
Mannnn!!! You can feel and hear Albert Kings influence over SRV!!! Awesome playing!!
I was in 💘 love with stevie ray. He wore a mean black skinner on his head. That hat was awesome!! Rest in God's bosom. I bet he's playing a groovy guitar in heaven
Stevie Ray Vaughan could play so clean, and yet with so much funk. Beautiful.
Loved the brim. It's my favorite hat on Stevie; it made him look like the Hamburglar...who was a badass just like SRV.
OMG SRV and Hiram Bullock on stage together! Both are in GUITAR-GOD heavengiving lessons tolesser mortals!
160 dislikes? No accounting for tastes. They are killing it in this video. Stevie at his best as usual.
Up to 661 now (3/6/20). WTF is wrong with people. This version is f**king epic.
The entire band is on fire!
I love Stevie Ray and Double Trouble but this band is fabulous. You can tell these guys are top flight musicians because they can play with someone they don't usually play with and sound like they have been together with Stevie Ray for years. Simply Dynamite post ! Thanks very much !!
This is A-List.
The musicians on night music can play anything....
Top shelf for real. Band is on fucking fire.
Dont you think they rehearsed a few times before the show?
@@69Curtdog maybe, but wouldn't be surprised if they just ran a soundcheck and BOOM
Any band with Omar Hakim on drums is a great band...
Average pro, overrated basher...!
@@douglasknoll3500 Well, not sure a 'basher' would get to be in Weather Report, but it would be dull if we all liked the same stuff I suppose! I saw WR play in London, was my first ever live gig, and was blown away by his playing, I didn't touch my kit for 6 weeks after...
@@douglasknoll3500 Keep the same energy for Lars.
This is July 2022 and still can't believe how great he was!!!! We never appreciated SRV like we should have. God Bless
Same!
allot of us did appreciate him !!!!
Who's we
Stevie's technical virtuosity was just amazing. He truly was the master of his instrument! What an amazing guitar player! Wow!
One in a million.....err......billion.
He's a blues player. No master by a long shot
A pretty average blues player no technical virtuoso
@StevieZerø what a load of bullshit. He could play jazz as well being a phenomenal blues musician. "pretty average" 🤣
It's hard to not watch his fingers on that Strat. but if you watch his face, that says it all. He loved what he was doing. We lost someone special in him.
There are very few artists, in my opinion, that play and sing as good live as they do in the studio. Srv was one of those few who could do it better on stage than in the recording studio.
Wow that backing band got the FUNK!!. Makes Stevie even better!
A bass player snapping strings is seriously digging to get the groove out, super tasty playing
And he's just like "fuck it, I'll do the next one on three strings"
Ain't that Stevie's trademark
Oh man you copied that from me ... That bass is digging lowdown to the underground .
He's The greatest blues Man in my book. I'm a Bass player for 53 years. Would have been nice to play for jim
Best version of this song I’ve ever heard.
R.I.P. Hiram Bullock 1955-2008.great guitar player
SRV epitomizes the phrase, “he plays guitar like ringing a bell.” No thinking, just playin. Perfect blues voice too.
Just when you think there is no SRV video or audio that you haven't seen, somebody posts a jewel like this !!
Thanks for sharing this incredible performance !
+Martin Taft My pleasure! One of his first appearances on USTV, if I am not mistaken. Thanks for the note of appreciation ;)
look for his sound check
the best was austin city limits.tightrope..but they took it down..dam it was awesome
Thinking the same thing! And I've seen them all. ❤
Rick Carter q
I will never, NEVER again hear another guitarist with that level of intensity. SRV was the best
Love the way the other musicians watch his hands
There simply has never ...ever... been a better music show then "NIGHT MUSIC" on T.V. Every show...week in and out was a true master class of talent! And there truly was no fiercer or brighter star on a Strat then Stevie Ray. What a jewel of a performance. I worship and cherish every note.
That’s real music there ....everyone of those guys are A1 musicians in their own right. Notice how the bass player breaks a string and still continues on without missing a beat. And you can tell that SRV respects those other players. Real knows real.
Hiram was also a great, amazingly unique player, I really love. RIP
Head bobbing like nobody bidness...
I think there was an Earthquake that registered at 7.9 on the Richter scale. Now I know what caused it. The Earth was growing to these master musicians and we were feeling the aftershocks of from Stevie’s Guitar 🎸. The world is a smaller place without you SRV. These guys are all just enjoying playing together, that’s what it’s all about. Groovin….
this is what ya call a great back up band , Hiram on rhythm makes for a grand slam on these tunes .
drummer here is off the charts great and bass really puts in 110% , even breaks a string and that aint easy
...gives Tommy a run for the money
i enjoy those bass line on
Stevie of course steals the show but GREAT backing band here, especially Omar Hakim on drums
Greatly overrated drummer...!
They did good by Stevie and Double Trouble. They did the songs justice
@@douglasknoll3500 overrated, really, are u sure of that, Douglas...........
If he isn't one of the greatest that's ever lived, I don't know what qualifies.
The band backing Stevie here are absolute beasts! WOWWWW
You know its a jam when the bass player breaks a string.
watersharer and keeps playing!
Your so right.
And the fact that he just plays the next song with 3 strings instead of changing it out. Love it
Omar Hakim is no joke. Legend. This version of Crossfire is rockin!
I remember seeing this live on late night TV. BLOWN AWAY. The band is clearly having a gas also.
The greatest blues rock guitarist of all time by a long shot
Jesus SRV was really incredible on all levels
Dearly missed.
Stevie was always funky, but these guys are go-to, ace musicians who can lay down some serious groove. They sound so tight you'd think this was his regular band. Every little gem of SRV playing at his sharpest is to be treasured. He was once in a lifetime.
Aw, making me a little teary :'(
RIP Stevie
Knowing the type he strung his strat with, that bending he does take a lot of streagth. Great musician and vocalist
He was the best guitar player on the planet at that time for sure
If anyone hasn't figured it out yet ,this is the cream of the crop. Thanks for posting.
Omar Hakim was fantastic with Sting on the Dream of the Blue Turtles album. Just an amazing jazz drummer that can do it all.
The closest guy to Jimi IMHO ….aided and abetted by the legendary Hiram Bullock ( his version of little wing on ,Sting’s album , is mindbending ) .
Another fabulous offering again Fil ….thanks a million
I'am just taking notes!!!.....great musical performance!!!!!!!!!!
SRV could drive any band to the stratosphere!!!!
Wow! How am I just coming across this in December of 2019??? This video has three of my top 10 all-time favorite musicians - SRV, Hiram Bullock, and Omar Hakim!!!!!! Hiram's solo on Sting's version of Little Wing is one of the most amazing guitar solos. Omar sounds amazing as always, and also got a catapult from Sting. And SRV...well, good grief.
ace1usmc
Totally Agree!!!Exceptional players here together!
ace1usmc Yeah, right?? Couldn’t believe as DS was introducing the band, Omar Hakim?!! Tom Barney?!! Hiram Bullock?!! Damn. And not enough: Don Alias?!! Shit!
Dig the 80s style, man. I miss those days.
The most deserving heir of Jimi Hendrix who developed his own style and even perfected it in time.
You don't realise how good he was until you go back and look at these old videos. Prince was damn good too, much underrated if you ask me....
I know how close Stevie was with Tommy, Chris and Reese, always preferring to jam with them over any other musicians, but DAAAAAAAMN THIS LINE UP IS ON IT!! OMAR IS A BEAST, along with everyone else in this Sanborn band! Rest In Peace Stevie Ray Vaughan ❤️🙏🏼
Nice to see Reese still out there with Joe B
Gone and yet, immortal.
Despite the fact I never watched him in live concert, I miss him. For me he was the Hendrix of the 80s in the USA. While in Europe, we had another genius called Rory Gallagher. All of them were taking the blues to even higher levels.
It's such a criminal shame that they both didn't happen to ever play together, or jam, at least. Just think of a live situation where SRV is adding his strat to Rory's Bulfrog Blues. Or Rory lending some good help on Stevie's Testify or Lenny...
Phewww...
GTFOH!! you better take a listen to Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Kingfish
The rhythm guitar player!!!!!!!!!
Stevie and Hiram R.I.P LOVE THOSE GUYS!!!!!!!
