    'Swing 42' How To Learn The Gypsy Jazz Repertoire
    In this lesson you'll learn the A section of the Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli tune 'Swing 42'.
    But more importantly you'll also learn the concept of how to memorise and learn all these tunes which you need to know for playing gypsy jazz guitar.
    The ONE thing you need to do everyday even if only for five minutes to learn the Gypsy Jazz Repertoire is to only play ONE tune at a time.
    In this example we look at the A section of the Django & Stephane tune 'Swing 42'
    Step 1:
    Learn the chords to the A section which are:
    C/Am7 Dm7/G7
    C/Am7 Dm7/G7
    Em7-5/A7/ Dm7/G7
    C/Am7 Dm7/G7
    Play this sequence OVER & OVER again until it starts to feel natural.
    Put on the metronome to 120bpm and play rhythm making sure to lock in with the beat
    There is no secret you just have to play it over and over again and it will stick!
    Step 2:
    Learn the notes to the melody out of time to get them under your fingers.
    Now put the metronome to 120BPM and play the melody in time over and over again until it feels natural.
    Have fun and If you’d like me to help you take your guitar playing to the next level, then test drive the new ‘Gypsy Jazz Transfusion Club’ For Free For 7-Days.

    This is really interesting as, at 52, I’m now getting obsessive about tunes.. I used to be the person who knew bits of loads of songs but am now learning Minor Swing, swing 42, bossa dorado and Midnight Blue (Kenny Burrell), I play these religiously every day and every day I learn something new and get better. It’s much better to narrow your focus and just revisit and practice practice practice. Thanks for all you do in spreading the word

    So so sooo important! Practicing 1 tune at the time, to actually be able to learn and remember it. I know maybe 50 tunes.. at least the beginning.. maybe.. I will now change and become a better person 💪🏻🙆🏻‍♂️and focus!

    Robin mentioned something really important that caused me to give up twice!! "Don't be so caught up in being orthodox"! This is soo true, you feel this anonymous pressure to do things exactly like Django, Stochelo etc and for a beginner (like me) it can kill the joy of playing. Later you can get more 'orthodox' if you want, but Robin makes things accessible and fun! Isn't that the reason we play???

    Hello Robin - greetings from Southport - very sound advice regarding the iPads and charts - in my band days and working on a new number, after going through it 3 times, the arrangement went in the case and the 4th time, "you're on your own with no crutches" - whilst it puts you under a bit of pressure, at least for me, it does work - oh, I notice for the rhythm part you are using "inside" chords - is this so that you are not "doubling up" with the soloist?

    • @GypsyJazzSecrets
      @GypsyJazzSecrets  Před 4 lety

      Topaz Tschinnery yes the only way really Topaz! What do you mean ‘Inside chords’? Robin

    • @topaztschinnery1418
      @topaztschinnery1418 Před 4 lety +1

      @@GypsyJazzSecrets Hi again Robin - "inside" chords never include the top E string and often omit the lower one as well - hence they were voiced "inside" the two E strings - I am really giving my age away now, those type of fingerings were popularised by an extremely fine North of England dance-band guitarist called Eric Kershaw in the 1940s/50s - he used to be on the radio quite a lot - Eric Kershaw and his Rhythmic Guitars - he published a superb book, "Dance Band Chords for the Guitar" which I bought, cost six shillings (30p, a weeks wages then) - still have it somewhere!! Keep up the good work, your enthusiasm is very infectious, I am dusting off the 1950s Framus Jumbo to see if I can make that Em7b5 sound as good as you do!
