+1 for not using the battery as a heatsink. 👍
Great review! - The D-pad is clicky, right?
Speaking of heatsinks, mine starts to melt if i clock it to defauilt and let it sit in the menu. It's worrysome in its current form and they need to put *something* in there.
@@DavidFilskov
That’s my main question too.
This comment clanged before my very eyes
@@DavidFilskov yes. Buttons too. It's incredibly satisfying.
Taki probably has a vault of handhelds he swims in like scrooge Mc duck
God I miss the 90's. Thank you for that mental picture.
😂
That would be lovely
I almost am nott hateful of his blessings. Surprisingly i am proud of this man instead of resentint his fortune
I started watching these videos when I was looking for a retro handheld, after I bought a miyoo mini plus, thanks to your recommendation, I just kept watching your videos beacuse of the quality and a unhealthy addition to retro handheld designs
This looks way better than most android handhelds. I love the vita sticks. Nice and small, pocketable, damn. I might get one. I want EXACTLY this but with a cutting edge soc.
Great review, Taki! Looking forward to your take on the Odin 2!
Just ordered mine! Super excited!
Do you like it?
I’ve been holding out for awhile this might be the one 🔥👌🏽
This is exactly the shape, screen size and button lay-out I'm looking for under 100. Would buy instantly with a better OS
It's a cute lil ARM based dude, so I'm sure somebody will figure out another OS soon
JELOS is coming to this device.
@@Pridetoons source?
@@gvanderlee2703didn't Taki say that IN this video? Lol
@@nickxcom not sure, its been a week
For < $100 I would pick this over the Retroid Pocket 2S for the display alone. However the niche SoC and lack of custom firmwares is the main thing that gives me pause.
Seems a bit early to mourn the lack of custom firmware. This device doesn't even ship yet...
@@clausjahnel5379 True but the relatively unique SoC doesn't bode well for quick porting of existing projects.
Great review , will get mine soon !
Woah, if this does hit the 65-75 mark, that's kind of insane. Kudos to trimui, it looks like they put some real genuine effort into this thing. I honestly don't mind the shoulder trigger setup, it looks like it aims for (and nails) the pocket-ability goal, which is something that matters to me.
This looks like it'll be a market segment leader if it does hit that price. $90 does push it a smidge.
Needs an OS that runs EmulationStation to be a market leader. It's a hard pass for me not running Batocera or the like.
@RetroMan- it seems like that will possibly be an option, Taki mentioned the gpu drivers are available and the jelos team have dev kits.
I can't believe how cheap these things are getting. It's only a matter of time before someone makes a great all rounder at $100.
@@jorge69696you can't believe what? the specs are awful. the price is right and maybe too expensive for what it is
Like he said, it's being distributed by third parties so you're not going to see the $65-$75 price point.
I love this kind of design, so simple with stacked shoulder buttons and clicky buttons makes it perfect(for me). I wish it was using 4:3 screen instead. With that type of processor there are some PSP games that can't run flawlessly anyway, at least without tinkering with some settings. But still, it's gorgeous!
I like it I learned how to use retroarch over the summer.
By the look and price alone, it looks like a decent device! Great video!
I do love seeing these devices slowly get better over time. I am personally not a fan of the side banners, i prefer black bars and black bars are also good on the battery too. It's good it gives you the ability to remove them.
Same here. Never understood the anti-black-bar-movement.
Having both options is nice, though.
Black bars make no difference to battery as this isn't an OLED screen
Slowly? every month something crazy releases, they improve very quickly.
I totally agree on the bad L2/R2. But I've come up with two different mods to fix them - one of them works really well for me.
Saw this thing recently and was hoping someone would review it
An alternative to extending the backside of the L2/R2 buttons outward would be to extend them upward. However, if they did that, they should also extend the front of the L1/R1 buttons upward too. I've never seen any company try it, but by making both of the top buttons as a "halfpipe" cradle for the index fingers could help them keep the same thickness.
With all the fast paced changes in this handheld industry, who knows. Someone might try it eventually?
Agreed. I've come up with two different mods to fix them, though. One of them works really well for me..
What a great piece of hardware !
Please consider adding video chapters. I'm more likely to skim through it if you're on a topic of the device I don't care about. 🙏
I think that's why he avoids it, people are less likely to sit through fluff their ads pay more for people who spend longer on the video or stay until the end
So you want him to put in more work for a video on a device you don't care about?
Nah you could always just fast forward yourself .
Please consider watching the whole vid to support his work 🙏🏽
Please consider skimming through yourself if you can’t appreciate the amount of work that this man puts into his videos 🙏
If it hits the price range that you mentioned, I'd really consider it! But not yet for the $90 that they're asking for at the moment.
you can buy it with the coupon code in the description and it would meet that price point
I hope Trimui gets the JELOS Team involved with this Handheld because I want Portmaster on this Handheld.
@@fewtariusGood Shit! I guess I'm buying one then. I wouldn't buy one otherwise. 😁👍
Wow. Love the look of this device! Simple yet effective with a great size screen. Always a fan of d-pad above analog sticks, because I want an emulator primarily for GBA. Was legit about to order the M17, but I'm so glad this video was at the top of my reccomended list. Thanks, Taki
Edit: just ordered the black version for $74 from MechDiy. Free shipping to the UK as well -- absolute bargain. I've been in the market for a retro handheld since November last year... so needless to say I'm very excited!!
Let us know how it feels when u receive it
@@dadou193 I got it about a week ago and I have to say I am really enjoying it. Not going to lie, setting up the roms was a massive pain because I ejected the SD card like a hundred times to make sure the box art names lined up with the rom names exactly... and I also had to restart my Pokémon Emerald Rogue journey as I quickly realised .sav files don't work on handheld emulators. Bit of a letdown on that front, but with it being my first experience with a retro handheld, it's just one of those things I had to learn at some point. Would have been nice to connect the device directly to fiddle with the folders and stuff, but getting used to retroarch is a necessary evil. The device itself is great for the price. Speakers are good enough, screen is nice and bright, and it genuinely does feel great in the hand. I've played Pokémon for hours on end multiple times now and not once was it uncomfortable. I only paid £64 for it all in all, so it's a very impressive device so long as you are aware of its capabilities and limitations. For example some PSP titles work, and I didn't expect myself to get pulled into it as much as I did on things like Tekken, so I will undoubtedly purchase a more expensive device in the future so I can get upscaling and stuff like that. With all that said I highly recommend it :)
@@sleepycat7718 very cool! Thanks for sharing! Out of curiosity do you know if the soccer games like PES work on the psp on this device? Really curious. And what about Tomb Raider 2 on PS1? Thanks again bud. Cheers enjoy
@@dadou193 The 2014 version of PES works just fine, so I'm assuming the previous ones will too, though I think the A and B buttons might need configuring in the settings, which is a common theme throughout this handheld I'm noticing. And for the life of me I can't figure out how to work Tomb Raider 2 because the only roms I'm finding are separate .bin files and idk, user error on my part, but I can safely say all PS1 titles will also work just fine
Really nice screen. The colours pop. Happy with my Deck though so just snooping ;_;
Software looks like it needs a lot of polishing before it's ready for release. The actual emulation looks decent enough and hopefully someone will make new CFW for this device. It's also nice to see a new device that isn't based on the 3566 or T618.
This design needs a more powerful CPU/GPU, hope for future improvements from this company, really liked the overall design/fell of this device.
Looks great :)
What I really want is the Trimui Smart Brick.
So far which is the best Linux retro handheld in your opinion? I am thinking on getting a Powkiddy X55
Not bad if the price is very keen. Otherwise it might not stand out enough. With that Allwinner SC being exposed, I'm surprised that the back plastic hasn't melted. Hearing that there are GPU drivers should be a plus to get the best out of that aspect.
This design with a stronger processor and android would be my dream device
Uff..android no no no. Dual boot would be great. I would prefer to stay in EmulationStation mostly but would love access to great android games. But only android no way. Too much work to set it up
@@RetroMan-android's ease of use is why I prefer it 😂
@retroman
Android has better optimized emulators, and people over exaggerate how difficult it is to set up. It is time consuming, but objectively easy.
Emulator noob here. I just ordered this for my wife. She's never had a GBA or DS. I thought it looked quality for the price. Paid $70 at Black Friday. Did I make a good purchase?
Yup
Is there room enough for a larger capacity battery than 5000mA? I'd like to put in something bigger, even if it makes the system heavier.
This is like my dream device design for psp and was disappointed by other posts/video showing poor psp performance it was better in this video but still with a 720p screen I really wanted much better performance than that hopefully they stick with and improve on this design in the future with better specs.
Which other creators have showed its psp performance being worser, if I may know?
Russ from @retrogamecorps
Hello 😉 Is it possible to connect a game controller to Trimui? Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work - you have amazing videos 👌 Your fan from the Czech Republic.
I really like the form factor. Did they cancel the Trimui Brick for this device or is that still coming out? I've also seen this chip use Android 12, wonder if that would help some systems' performance.
It's still coming out.
good as always
what do we think the chances of JELOS making it to this number are? i got one on the way, i for some reason have super high hopes for this thing.
How does Conker's Bad Fur Day and Sin and Punishment play on this Handheld?
found one for 85 and im tempted to get it honestly, ive been eyeing the rg353m for a while but damn this is like 50 bucks cheaper
It's pretty cool that they implemented tate mode, not many consoles do that.
Pretty good performance, but I wish you'd throw WWF No Mercy into your N64 testing. It had slowdown pretty significantly on the original hardware with matches that had more than 2 people and it's one of the biggest reasons I'm looking for a solid N64 emulator.
Please review the Anbernic RG Arc-D when it's available.
Looks good. I cancelled my RG35s order on aliexpress and decided to wait a little while for this one.
Hi Taki, firmware 1.0.4 is out (with vulkan support), can we expect an updated review ?
that chip must be a fair ammount faster then the rk3326, the r36s really cant run gta for the psp very good
If this ran something more normal and customisable as an OS, like something with an EmulationStation+RetroArch setup, this would be a great value
This is running mainui and RetroArch. This version allows skins and themes, but it definitely is not emulation station. Everything is basically configurable the same way previous Trimui and miyoo devices have been. (Mainui and MinUI not to be confused btw. MinUI would be great on this but I don't know if it's coming.)
MinUi is coming but has a cut off of systems. No n64 or Dreamcast if I remember. I know it covered NES SNES GB GBC GBA. Not sure about DS or anything else. I just bought mine and was watching reviews when I heard about it.
Your video says Wi-Fi 5, it's actually only Wi-Fi 4 (and most likely 2.4GHz only) (according to both the advertising material and the XR829 chip shown in the teardown in this video), which doesn't sound like much but it's actually quite a big deal, this could potentially be a killer streaming device for the price if it had Wi-Fi 5. well if you only use it to do link gaming, it won't matter I guess.
The XR829 chip also had Bluetooth, but the advertising material didn't say, maybe in a later firmware update?
I might get one if they get the L2/R2 fixed.
How is this handling n64 on 1gb ddr4 when most other portables choke with 2?
I wonder if ship of harkinian will work on this with box, since this is just linux
That's a killer device for the price! I know nothing about Linux, is it possible to get Xbox Gamepass loaded on here to stream cloud games?
I like this a whole lot more than I thought I would going into this video. The screen and LED rings around the sticks makes it look a lot more premium than it actually is. Performance seems decent enough. I wish this ran Android because I bet "Horizon Chase" would be a blast on this.
taki, when will you make a Odin 2 review?
Does this run PSP heavy games (like DJ Max Portable, etc)?
Anyone know when the use of the stick clicking buttons (L3+R3) were more prominent? PS1 or PS2 era? Curious what games would be sorely lacking without it if anyone is retro game knowledgeable.
The PS1 launched with no analog sticks at all. The Dual Control and Dual Shock with their L3 and R3 buttons both came later. As a result not that many games actually made use of L3 and R3 and those that did generally used it for pointless stuff. The only PS1 game that I can think of which might actually need L3 and R3 is "Ape Escape".
Now 1.0.4 firmware have released, I guess the later updates would make better this.
Do you have any think to make new video of this?
The retro gray one looks nice. Kind of a cheap ayaneo or odin. Also why did Minish Cap look that bad? Everything else looked good
Have a question, does the SD card sticks out a bit from the handheld? Mine does.
I've used the Super Mario World level 1 theme as my ringtone on every Android phone I've ever owned and still to this day get trolled every time it's included in a video.
Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't watch so much emulation content lol.
Finally vita analogs 🎉
just curious how you got all these emulators working cause I just got mine in and I wanted to know where I could download it
Speaking of the RP3, how does this compare in size to that? The specs I've seen seem to indicate that it's pretty much the same.
The problem is RP3 screen is smaller and less resolved
Now I am super torn. I've decided a few days ago to get a RGB30 from Powkiddy but this unit ruined my plans. If they are on the same price, then this looks like the better option.
Actually really like the design on this considering how much it will retail for. Better looking than competing handhelds even at slightly higher price points. If the software improves and the price stays relatively low it looks solid.
Should I get this or the X55?
is this better than r36s and rg35xxH interms of chipset, screen, stability, smoothness of animation and durability?
Is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd being slow potentially down to it being the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. version which never ran on actual PSP hardware and was instead intended to be run using an emulator on PS3?
sound with the DS games sounds off
Trying to decide between this and the RGB30. Wanting to play everything especially n64/psp games with good performance. Do you guys have any recommendations?
You should get this device, performance is similar but the screen ratio of the Trimui is better for N64 and perfect for PSP
I also see online they revised updated the operating system three times latest being last month so it should be even better.
It is, with the last update you now get performance mode, which bumps the speed of the CPU.@@Maxx134a
So excited for this... I would love to understand why you think it will be 60-75? What's the logic/thought process behind that?
Based on the price that it will sell within China + the overseas tax that is usually applied from 3rd party distributors. It's selling for $72 right now, so it's in the range.
@@TakiUdonDo you know the Chinese name of the device? Struggling to find it on Taobao
@@TakiUdon $89.99 without your discount from the link you shared in the desc

How do cheats work with one of these.
Can u use Bluetooth controller with an adapter and receiver?
I been looking at this handle emulator. I wanted to get something that can handle gameboy and up to ps1 pretty smoothly with much fps drops. Any suggestions?
Miyoo Mini Plus plays up to ps1 and is great value
is it possible to change the sticks to hall sticks? thanks
What do you think about the final version?
the battery not being too close to the cpu isnt a good thing? considering that this can get pretty warm in long-ish sessions
I was thinking about picking this up, but your link isn't working...
more or less powerful than a powkiddy x55? (5.5 inch display hd)
Is this chip better or worse than a rk3566?
Why do so many of these devices have two ports for USB-C? Is there a reason to separate data and charging?
One of them is used for external accessories. The other port is used for debugging and for charging.
Was there a reason you didn't showcase Saturn emulation? Not playable?
No Saturn compatibility
This is not the review we expect :D
you don't reqlly need an 16:9 screen on a handheld which is too weak to emulate 16:9 consoles
Yep. Just adds complications
Perfectly fair, I just want this Handheld for JELOS.
Wrong, The bigger screen beats out shitty tiny screens, no matter the game resolution.
@@Maxx134a I am not speaking of resolution. I am referring to aspect ratio. those are not the same you know
how do you add more games to it
The link to buy it don't work, it show a page with this text :"The link is not currently active."
So Taki, would you say that this device has better N64 emulation than most RK3566 devices out there? What about playing Rouge Squadron?
Not better. They are more or less the same.
@@TakiUdon ok thank you. It looked like you were getting better emulation performance on that device compared to my X55
@@HunteronaBudget Should be better as it has CPU control ability in settings, and there there about three software updates since then, latest being end of Dec. ..
@@Maxx134a that's good to hear. I have played around with my RK2023 and RG353V and have noticed that N64 emulation is much better when the ROM is installed on the OS (TF1) card and not using a second Games (TF2) card. Ex. Rouge Squadron is unplayable when using a second Games card but is flawless when running only the OS Card. This is using Samsung micro SD cards and using ArkOS
Any trusted store on Aliexpress for the device?

Using battery as a heatsink is actually a very practical design choice. Cellphone manufacturers do that all the time.
