  • Has your dog been poisoned? If you're wondering what the poisoning symptoms in dogs are then stick around to find out how to tell if your dog has eaten a common pet poison.
Clearly it depends on the poison but many symptoms of poisoning are the same. Many symptoms cross over and so we can make some generalizations and break them down into those affecting different parts of the body.
Probably the most common group of poisoning symptoms is intestinal signs. This might include excessive salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. But these are pretty common symptoms so when should you be worried that it is more than a simple tummy upset? Watch for more information.
Our next big common group of poisoning symptoms for common pet poisons is neurological signs. Issues with the bodies nervous system are again a relatively common feature, becoming more common if higher doses of poison are consumed or if treatment is delayed. These signs might involve twitching, tremors, wobbliness (also known as ataxia), in-coordination, seizures and fitting. Any of these signs, regardless of cause, should prompt a visit to your vet as soon as possible.
Problems with the blood is our number 3 symptom group with several toxins causing issues here. Bleeding is a result of rat bait poisoning, one of the most common poisonings seen. This bleeding could be anywhere and so may not be obvious but bloody vomit or coughing up blood are symptoms you would certainly notice. Bleeding evidence can also be seen by looking at your dogs gums. If they are pale or even white then blood loss is one possible cause.
Many toxins will cause the heart to become much more rapid than normal. This might be because the body in general is under some degree of stress or because the toxin is directly affecting the heart, causing it to beat more quickly. Tied to this is the potential for the heart rhythm to also become erratic and for an arrhythmia to develop.
Next up are the kidneys and liver. Both of these organs can be involved in processing and removing toxins from the blood and both can be affected or irreparably damaged by some toxins. With kidney damage, symptoms may be very vague and just consist of your pet appearing lethargic, going off their food and being generally very unwell.
Our final group of potential poisoning symptoms in dogs are those who do not fit into the other categories. These include pain or discomfort, restlessness, hyperactivity, abdominal bloating, a raised body temperature, coma and finally death.
These symptoms are often very vague so it is not always easy to tell for sure if your pet has been poisoned. If you have any concerns then you should get in touch with your vet straight away. If poisoning is the cause of your pet being unwell then rapid treatment will give them the best chance of a full recovery.

I just lost my almost 6-year old Boston terrier. He had a lot of the symptoms that were mentioned on here, and it upsets me because I took him to the vet and was there for a whole day and they weren’t able to figure out what was wrong with him. He just kept having seizures and told me he needed to go to another care facility. When they released him to me, he died that same night. I wish I would have seen this sooner 😢

Sorry for your loss. Poisoning is just one of the 5 main causes of seizures and a lot of poisoning symptoms can also be caused by other things. Unfortunately there are no good tests to know if poisoning is the cause of any problems seen. My condolences 😥

Our chocolate Labrador Sam passed away last night 😥 watching this video has given me more clarification on what might have happened to him... He had all the symptoms of poisoning and we rushed him to the vet but half way to arriving... He took his last breath in my arms 💔 he was only 2 years old and was SO playful and loving 😭

My dog got sick immediately possibly due to ingesting something toxic like a frog, or maybe got bitten by a spider, we're not too sure 😥 but what ever it was took him FAST... Sam was an outdoor dog (fenced in our back yard).
Btw this is just my experience with my dog, it could be something entirely different with your dog or anyone else's. But my best advice is DONT second guess it, rush your baby to the vet ASAP if you see him/her struggling.

*ZODIAC* My dog had a pretty severe reaction to a VERY low dose of flea/tick medication containing a very minuscule amount of methoprene (2.9%) and permethrin (45%). The dose I gave her was tiny compared to the recommended dose on the packaging (2 ml). She weighs close to 65 lbs/30 kilograms. The entire recommended dose was the full little dispenser (2ml). I gave her HALF (1 ml) of the recommended dose meaning only 25% or 1/4 TOTAL according to her body weight. Within 10 seconds of applying topically (to her skin), she began wheezing, sneezing, coughing and freaking out. Thankfully she trusts me enough to follow me to the bathroom despite struggling to breathe. In the bath with warm water and dishsoap. With 5 minutes of bathing, she calmed down and began breathing normally but I have NEVER seen her have such a dramatic and extreme reaction to anything. Never again. I thought I was going to lose her. 😭

Hello, my dog was diagnosed as being poisoned but we dont know what was exactly. The vet says either rat poison or a scorpion, because of the fact that my dogs blood coagulates after too long. But what is really stressing us out is that she appears to not see, not hear and also walks around with no directions, looking for corners and gets frustrated and cries... It's been 4 days like that. He was almost down for the count shaking and near passed out. Very relieved. 4 double 0 capsules. It took about 1/2 hour to work. I understand it sops up the poison in the gut and the animal elliminates it, if you use it quick enough. We lost a goat the year before. We have Death Cap, Destroying Angel and Amanita Muscaria. Know your poisonous mushrooms.

I'm not sure if this is due to poisoning but as of recent my dog has been in a lot of pain, he does have liver problems and he was given medicine for this awhile back, we managed to get into a routine to feed the dog separately from our cats as this was the reason for his liver problems as he'd dig into their food and not his own... But this is different, he's never acted this way before, hes shrieking whenever he feels pain in his lower stomach, he shakes abnormally, and has no energy to get up, usually wants to lay down and be alone, i can't tell if these are signs of poisoning as he's eaten many things he shouldn't eat but hes also old and somehow lived long enough for me to call him old but i feel like hes either poisoned or dying to health problems and old age.

      Please look up.
B1 DEFICIENCY IN DOGS and Soldiers!
      B1 def. in cattle.
My dog at the end died from B1 def. because my mother fed him behind my back with giant white beans. I told her to never feed him bread, potatoe, pasta, especially this beans!
He had enourmous pain the same night in his stomac area. Then he lost strength in his back legs, then after 2 weeks front legs. The doctors thought it was old age and degenerative spine disease. Wrong meds, pain killers...which caused further decline. He could not defecate from that day and he ended up not defecating for 1, 5 week, not urinating for 1 week.
      Than he developed kidney failure.
      It was horrible!
At the end he could not move at all and developed big wounds from lying down. Losing weight, musclemass.
All from the giant white beans, which blocked his intestines AND also caused B1 acute deficiency!!!
This caused his legs weakness to total unable to use them and also heartfailure and so on. The antibiotics, anti- inflamatour + painkillers killed him too as a plus.
      Euthanizing was horrible.
I myself ( to late!!! ) discovered the B1 deficiency symptoms! Thanks to google and was 10 hours a day trying to figure out myself things, being misled constantly by what i read and by vets, until it was to late. Vets even denied totally, the cause of eating beans, who caused a blockage and who caused ACUTE B1 deficiency. Some beans contain something ( i think sulphur and something else ) who causes antivitaminase of B1.
      My dog was strong, healthy...until...
He was allmost 14 years old.
      A Belgian Malinois.
I allways fed him well, as fresh as possible and that day, fatal day, my mother who visited me and never lustens or respecting boundaries gave him beans.
I only went to the bathroom and the dog was unsupervised. I never wanted to leave my dog with anyone, not even with my mother.
I loved him so much and i died with him.
An old dog can only take so much.😢
      😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😭😭

He seems to be recovering, he is a little lethargic but still wants food and treats and water. Have you ever had this experience any recommendations?

    • @tjjones-xj7kq
      @tjjones-xj7kq Před 10 měsíci

I know this is two years old but to others who read this.....air activated hand warmers the kind you open and shake that are disposable are mainly iron and a weak acid. It also has an ingredient that just acts like a buffer so the whole pack isn't activated at once. Oh and possibly charcoal also.
The iron (primarily black substance) rusts and the reaction gives off the heat. The acid or whatever just causes the rust to happen faster so the pack heats up fast. I think most say "nontoxic" on them for what it's worth.
I'm not a veterinarian but I'd think it's probably not going to kill it. Obviously if anyone's dog eats it and acts off see a vet.

Called both 24/7 vets, one said to bring him in, induce a needle to make him vomit, and the other said not to worry, just look over him. If any signs persist after showing, rush him there. Thoughts? Allways rush to the vet.
Give him allways directly NORIT tressed tablets after pouson, even this cigarette.
Vets have normally also NORIT ( ACTIVATED CHARCHOAL ) to put it to clean the stomac, intestines from poison.
In my country hospitals use often NORIT to get out pousons, intoxications asap from the body. Ask for it. Inform yourself.
Have it allways in your home and purse when you go outside for a walk AND FOR YOURSELF TOO btw.😢

But still he's still active and happy through us and loves to be petted by me and my girlfriend, also sits besides us when were nearby. His poo is normal, he doesn't puke or poo with blood, he's just shaking uncontrollably. We also thought that its rabies but he's not having a bublish saliva and doing something crazy. With a lot of things in pet health, if we can find a way to manage a problem (when it doesn't appear to be detrimental to general health especially) then that is sometimes far easier and much much cheaper than doing lots of tests to try and find out exactly what is going on, some of which may be very expensive or carry some degree of risk.

My dog found a wrapper of choco knots. She licked a bit of the chocolate left at the top before I found her hiding it... will she be okay?

I am not an expert by any means, but I've grown up with a lot of different dogs. As for the sponge I would mostly worry about your dog's breathing... Other than that keep an eye out to make sure that they're able to poop still. And the coffee really depends on the weight of your dog... I've known a dog that literally ate an entire bowl of chocolate and survived*. He was definitely lucky, don't get me wrong. But all that to say, the larger the dog, the less I would worry about the caffeine especially because it was a small amount. Again. I'm not any form of expert, but I hope this helps somehow.
