  • What does a dog’s sleeping position mean? Most dog owners know about their pets' habits and easily understand when their dog is happy, worried, surprised, or scared. You can also reveal some of your dog's secrets by analyzing its favorite resting position.

    SUMMARY:
    - The snowball is one of the most popular positions among dogs - and among cats as well! In this position, a dog curves its spine, and its nose is located not far from its tail.
    - The pancake is the most restorative position for sleep, and, in most cases, that's exactly when REM sleep occurs. So don't get spooked if your doggy starts to kick and paddle out of the blue. It's just acting out its dreams.
    - If you notice that your adult dog prefers Superman position, it may indicate that it feels hot. Perhaps it's been a sweltering day or your dog has been playing and exercising too hard. Your dog may be simply exhausted.
    - You can sometimes catch your pet curled up in a tight ball with its tail wrapped around its body and its paws neatly tucked away. This way of sleeping resembles the fetal position in humans.
    - If your dog prefers sleeping on its back with its front legs bent over its chest and its back legs extended, you’ll probably guess that it feels at ease.
    - By sleeping in the dead cockroach position, your pet can be cooling off. You must have noticed that some areas of dogs' tummies aren't as fluffy as the rest of their body.
    - The sphinx position allows your dog to take off running as soon as you call it. Not many dogs sleep this way, and this is kind of a transitional state between wakefulness and rest.
    - If your pooch is a burrower, it needs more affection and attention than any other animal. When such dogs snuggle into something cozy, they are searching for security and comfort.
    - If you notice that one part of your pet rests on a comfortable sofa and the other resides on a hard, unforgiving floor AND your dog is sound asleep at this time, congratulations! You're the owner of a unique dog!

I have had my dog, Martin, for about 9 years. He was a rescue, and it was pretty obvious he was abused. When we first got him, I let him in the bed with me, and he tried staying as far away from as possible. He would try to avoid us, and wouldn't let me pick him up. I left him alone, and would comfort him, and try to reassure him I'm safe. After about a year, he came up to me, and sat next to me. Another year after that, and I could pick him up, and cuddle with him. Now, when I come home, he runs towards me, and jumps into my arms, he lets me pick him up, and follows me around all day. All. Day. His most common sleeping position is when he lays out on his side. He puts his back to me, and lays with me all day. He is truly, my best friend.

Ur dog must love u soooooo much. For him to have that backstory and to have that much trust in u and for u to have that much trust in him, that’s an unbreakable bond u and ur dog share. U must not be able to imagine life without him. I share a bond with my cat, and I dread the day that she will no longer sleep with me in my bed. Take care of ur dog, like u would take care of ur family, and remember, he is family.

I got my jack Russell when he was a month old. My dad went to get me a puppy for Christmas and was looking around at all the jack Russells. He saw this one little puppy passed out on his back. People were poking and prodding him and other dogs were running around and climbing over him and he just slept through it all. So my dad decided to get that one because he seemed to put up with anything. 11 years later and he's laying next to me right now, fast asleep in that same position and snoring like a bear.

How about 'The Husky'? This sleeping position is a mix off all of the previously mentions, including the bonus. But also includes climbing into bed with you (and your partner) and laying across both of you or deciding which pile of clothing is comfy and lay across ALL of it. It also includes becoming a doorstop/draft stopper, usually at a front or back door.
    Because that's my dog😂

Both of my dogs like to do the sphinx, tight ball, and pancake. And its usually a pattern. When they go to sleep like the curl up in the spots of the cough that retain the most heat and then they somehow transition to pancake mode during their sleep. When they wake up they go into a sphinx position and after a couple of minutes they go back to pancake mode lol. Right now, one of my dogs is doing the sphinx on the stairs and watching the door for my mom.

My border collie takes over my bed, but I don’t care, she really likes to force herself under the blankets. Even if it’s summer. If she’s dreaming her ears and eyes will twitch. She will also sometimes give a little hushed bark, but it’s pretty rare. She will also sometimes sleep on me, and again I don’t care, I find it adorable, even though I can’t breath sometimes. The picture here is of my previous dog who bonded with me as no human. Having said the same, I have now another red Norwich terrier, all of eight months now, of which four with me. She sleeps on her side, exposing her belly, neck... or on her back. Recently, at a lunch with friends, she stretched out from my lap, half her body suspended, to lean her head on a much lower table, fast asleep. A photographer took a snap of her! I am filled with joy to see she is as comfortable in her new home. She arrived terribly sad... I guessed she missed her family, felt her pain, and tried hard to make up. In these four months, she has adapted to new sounds, scared stiff. I try to be in her place, understand her fears, and slowly, together we are becoming a team, overcoming such shortfalls. She loves now snuggling upto me when asleep... and upon awakening, is the delight of my life.. That expresses how much I truly love the company of this superior being.. superior to us humans...

my dog often sleeps in the sphynx/snowball positions depending where hes at. if in bed with me or on the couch he's on his side belly open but if hes on the floor je sleeps like this. I'm fairly sure its because its nighttime and he's got a lot of guarding and protective behaviors, he sleeps in that sphyx position more often when he sleeps infront of my door above my head (my bed leaves a gap where the door opens where my head rests and so he sleeps there half the time) and snowball when hes on the floor next to the bed or in his kennel alone.

Pretty sure it's a breed thing too. I wouldn't say a donut ball says the dog is untrusting of its loving owner, it could just be what it prefers due to body shape and breed type.
My little chihuahua from day one as a puppy slept in a donut ball and he is spoiled so much with love and affection and completely in a safe environment. Happy tails and playful prancing all day long.

My chihuahua is more often a borrower as I always make sure he has a blanket in his bed with him. I think it's just the breed, he stays cold a lot of times so he likes a blanket. The funniest thing about it is his ability to "tuck himself in" as he is quite the pro at it.

  • @user-dj4zb1pt4z

Cute visuals, great voice, but some of this info is incorrect or misleading. Dogs bred to be burrowing hunters love to sleep burrowed up. They're not feeling insecure. Dogs bred to have "pushed in" faces (brachycephalic breeds) such as bulldogs, have difficulty breathing and may sleep on their backs because it's easier for them to breathe, not because they're feeling unusually relaxed.

My little puppy Brandy likes the snowball because she can jump up on her feet as soon as the backdrop opens or there's a knock at the door.
My other little puppy Dotty likes the pancake and mostly sleeps in that position when she's under the glass table.
Both of them like the super man and as soon as we say outside they lift there head up.
Brandy likes the curled up ball because she's small and it's easy but Dotty is too big to do it.
None of my puppies sleep on there back but Dotty does when she wants a tummy rub.
Brandy every once in a while if she sleeps in the pancake and then stretches she'll stay in that position which is the cockroach position.
The sphinx is there secret weapon, they act like they are tired but when I go to pet them they runoff.
Brandy is a burrowed, shell either curl up and sleep between my legs or I'll cover her with blankets and cuddle with her or she'll go under the blankets and sleep between my legs.
