12 Ways to Protect Your Home While You’re Away

- According to FBI statistics, around 1.5 million burglaries took place in the US alone in 2017. But is there a way to protect your home from burglars if you can’t afford an expensive security system? Bright Side has collected simple yet effective tips that will help you protect your home and even discourage thieves from breaking into your property.
One of the popular way to enter a property is through first-floor windows. FBI reports show that around 23% of burglars in the US choose this way of entering homes. That’s why you should consider installing grilles if you live on the first or second floor. Don’t forget that you should have an escape route in case of an emergency, so buy grilles that can be unlocked. If you want to know what other ways to protect your home are, watch the video!

SUMMARY:
- While a plumber is fixing something under your sink, they have enough time to have a look around. They can turn out to be bad guys who inform their accomplices.
- Some thieves get creative and use a landline phone trick where they call your home phone and wait for an answer. If no one picks up a phone, it means that nobody’s home.
- The locks most at risk of lock snapping are cylinder ones; the most complicated locks are those that can be opened with lever keys.
- Make it easy for the police to identify your house. Put a large reflective number on your house and mailbox. Burglars like to get into dark houses to win some extra moments to get out again.
- Thieves are scared of being caught. A simple but extremely effective way of scaring them off is putting out a sign that says “Protected Property.” This trick will make burglars think twice before breaking in.
- If you’re throwing away the box from a new TV or refrigerator, you’re likely to attract potential burglars who’ll want to steal your new item. To avoid trouble, tear the box apart before throwing it away.
- Imagine you’re leaving your home for a while. You’re already in the street, and you suddenly notice a strange person. They might be waiting for you to leave so they can break in. Don’t be shy! Turn around, and wave your hand as if someone stayed at home.
- If you notice scratches on your lock, it might mean that burglars have tried to open it. Before you open the door and enter your home, check your lock so that you can react quickly if there’s an emergency.
- If windows are curtained for a few days in a row, it can indicate that nobody’s home as there aren’t many people who like to live without sunlight.
- To turn an ordinary fence into a barrier, plant something with abrasive foliage (like a dog rose or dewberry plant). You can also plant roses right under your windows.
- You should be careful with unfamiliar service companies that call and ask questions about your workplace and hours or about the people who live with you. It’s one of the methods thieves use to find out the history of a property and the most suitable time for breaking in.

Yeah, a 44 mag. For when I'm at home, and my pitbull for when I'm not.
Well, i have an lock on my front and back door. The anti burglars fact is that if the key at the inside is in the lock, then it can't be pushed out, and if the key isn't in the lock and someone is trying to get in by recking the lock, then it locks;) itselves up and can't be opent (except you break the whole door down wich won't go that easy)
"Leave your spare key with a neighbor.."
**Neighbors a thief**
yeah that was a terrible idea, considering most break-ins are done by friends, family, and neighbors. Also, he said to leave the curtains open, but it's a fact that most burglars check for that, and usually "case" the house before they break in, and look inside the windows, checking to see if the lights are on and if any movement is in the house, they don't like dogs, and they will leave if they see people, obviously... (hopefully).. I watched an interview with a former burglar and he said if those curtains are closed, they usually skip the house altogether... especially if a light is left on, and/or music/tv is playing. Also, a good lock is not a bad idea, but most consumer locks can be broken into so it doesn't matter which lock you have, really, and even if you have a good lock, chances are, the door can be kicked in anyways, without reinforced door frames.

When leaving your home DONT talk about it on social media. If people see you are on vacation, or evacuating from a storm. they might think your home is an easy target while you're away.
You forgot most important
Don’t post on social media when you’re on holidays
Someone came to our school and told us that. It lets burglars know your not home. My mom still posts but only certain ppl see it.
but how would burglars know where you'd live in the first place?
Imagine U just Upload a image then go to home and upload it then robber will come to rob it but u will be home

It is really an advantage to take care of many dogs. In that way, I always keep the house far from being hot on the eyes of these theives. My dogs are the sweetest dogs ever to me and my family but they are the scariest dogs there is once they smell a threat around me and my family. 3 large dogs in front of the house, 4 large ones at the back and 2 little but brave dogs inside the house. 😊
That's great. The only thing is you have to be able to afford all that. No way I could. I have 2 house dogs and that is enough. They go off at anybody.
Also. Make sure to use a screen door in front of your normal door, so that you have double protection.
Best way : *stay home!* 😃
It does feel good to be home! 😃

I'm actually a parent and my daughter always stay outside. Once she saw a sketchy person so she walked up to him he told her If she could run 2 laps around the compound so she said sure why not. She actually didn't go, she stood behind the tree and saw him cracking our house door with a bobby pin, so she new he was a robber, so she came creeply to him and then jumped on him then pulled his hair she went nuts. She screamed so loud that when I was upstairs I could here her. And she did the unthinkable them hit him with her favorite frying pan
, Ok I know it's weird to bring a pan outside but she did it. He was uncounsus, and fell to the ground, while he was on the floor we called the cops and that's my story. Have a great day! And stay safe!
Dude, we have three Rottweilers, no joke. We got them one of female and soon we bred her with a male and we had nine pups, we had to give seven of them away, I fell I love with two of them so we kept them, they even took police dog lessons cause I really wanted them to! They are my adorably, terrifying babies!
I have two Cocker Spaniel Dogs, one of them is very yappy, and the other has a nice normal bark, but when someone knocks on the front door or something, it goes about 10 times deeper
Put up a “beware of dog” or “guard dog on property” sign up.
I have " beware of dog "
Oh god just use a printed eyeball on the peephole lar!!
Or beware of cat
Great idea!
Yes good advice
Turning on porch lights which are located in the front and backyard of your 🏡 at all times when it gets dark at night.
Our neighbor does that
You're better off with lights that have motion sensing radar, they are very effective.
I own big dogs I always have the best way to protect your property if they’re trained and maintained properly. It’s probably another great way to catch him after he’s robbed you.
ALWAYS secure your shed where tools are kept (like hammers/axe/ladder) don't give a burglar what he needs to break into your home.
Ask one of your neighbours to empty your mail box while you're away. Piles of mail/papers/letters means you're out of town.
Kick your habit of showing if you're here or not, like raising your flag in the morning and tucking it before night, or open your front gate for the day. It shows to everyone if the owners are in or not.
Or place a vacation hold on ypur mail at the post office. This can be done online too. Your mail won't resume delivery until the the designated date and pick up of your held mail.
Just watch Home Alone and act accordingly.
haha

leave the tv on in a room near a front window. this will trick them in to thinking your grabbing something.
have atleast one of your cars out of your garage
well looks like land owners are gonna get extra money XD
Here’s 2 ACTUALLY good tips ~
1. Get those signs that say “Security camera” or a brand of one and put it on your door, they will make them think if they robb the House, they’re going to be on video tape
2. Get a neighbours car if they have 2 and park them out the front of your house, tell the neighbours to drive it around regularly
These have worked for my house because I’ve been robbed before, not much but still
Keep safe ❤️❤️
Clever
I did it and I loved it
My neighbours always park their cars at my house and their bicycles too and my mom gets annoyed because she can't park her car in the garage cause it is covering the garage
I have a security camera with a mic on it, so I can hear the thieves and I can also talk to them on the cam. "This is the national protection unit 2000. The police WILL be called in 3 seconds unless you show VALID id."
Declan same
Which security and mic do you use...I would like something like this
@@AsTheSunRises I got it from santa. But it's a small, white, circler camera and it has a built in mic. I monitor it using Hubble for [Can't spell] Cameras.
And why are you announcing that on social media ?
Thanks for that idea. What’s that system called that you use?
Motion Sensors on the entrances triggering different automations depending on if some1 is home or not, automatic lights and blinds, simulated TV lighting, everything coupled to Home Assistant with access everywhere. Also works when internet is down since its managed locally.
Thank you for all the help! 😊
Put keyed locks on every bedroom/office door and lock them before you leave the house. This essentially makes every room a low-level safe/saferoom depending on what kind of interior doors you use. Takes thieves extra time to break those doors down.
People who use curtains instead of doors be like
someone tried to break in to my house when my uncle brought my dogs down from his house, one of which is a giant bull arab who is EXTREMELY well trained for this kind of thing (when he lived in Australia there were a lot of burglaries there) the guy must have hit his head on something after he climbed over the wall and my dog kept an eye on him until we got home, we were only out for about 45 mins so we left the back door open, he got charged in the end and because of Xena nobody tried to mess with us again XD
LpsravenTV I love this story.
We have put a board that says
"You are under Cctv watch"
Never...
Always buy or move in to a property in an area where some of your neighbors have a construction skip parked outside. It shows that your new neighbors care about their homes by renovating them. Also it shows they have money and are professional hard working people with at robust neighborhood watch schedule.
Just ask all the neighbour's kids to play in your front yard, Or let them park their car in your free parking space.......
Now that's clever
Hmmm.. good idea
Good idea.
nice!
When I was a child, this couple moved into our neighborhood and we’re almost always gone. One day the neighborhood kids were using their basketball goal and I said to them “why are you using the new neighbors goal, especially when they’re not home?” The kids told me “they said it’s fine to use it even when they’re gone”. At the time it was puzzling me until I got older and realized how smart the new neighbors were. Buy a basketball goal and let the children use it is my new theory.

I have one friendly advice for people who are protecting their homes: Don't worry about locking the door, just have a security system. This is coming from a person who's been broken in before. My garage door's doorknob was all broken and there was a huge hole we had to repair which just cost us more expenses. Let the burglar in, as the security system will ring anyways and notify the police.
No insurance? They should have paid for the repairs less deductible.
That's the absolute dumbest advice I have ever heard. Are you serious?
Really? I would be at the door with Taylor Swift playing and a bat in my hand 😂
One other thing if you get mail or packages with your address, if you finish with it, and before you throw it away, make sure you tear up or scratch your address off so no one can get your address to your home

Thanks this really helps
I know someone who discovered a good security tip by accident.. They use to leave a light on at night even if they were home and even if they were asleep … so it looked like someone was up.. It cost a bit more on the electric.. A while later they purchased a couple of solar sensor security lights to place around the exterior of the property then realised they can be used inside also and they switch on and off automatically at dusk and dawn.. Great no more hyped up electric bills.. If you have a dog place windchimes near exits/entrances that you know do not have draughts. If someone tries to break in even silently they will set the chimes off.. alert the dog and the dog barking will alert you. In theory..

My house has specialised doors, which have breakable points in the lock, so if someone tries to pick it and damages the lock, it seizes up, and does the same if someone tries to force it open. It also uses a standard key as well as a hidden key fob.
Pretty good advice. Not all of it is the best though.
11) turn down your house phone: Sure if youre 65 and still have a house phone.
10) The first key, never tried to pick. Live in a country now that practice will happen (educationally of course). Cylinder style key, I could almost literally find trash to pick it.
6 ) Shred boxes: Yes, good idea, but more importantly is destroying any name or personal information on, in, or around the package.
5 ) Wave at an empty house: If you are a woman or a young boy, probably not a bad idea.
3 ) Open blinds, curtains, etc... That actually makes it very very easy for a criminal to know whats going on. With the contrast of dark outside and lights on inside, a criminal can see into your house very well while minimizing their chances of being seen. This idea is very bad.

Another tip to prevent theifs breaking in your home is ....... put You're lights on a timer near evening timer like around 6:30pm or 8: 30 pm , if Burglar sees lights they think someone is home
This is very helpful
Put CCTV cameras, Fences with sharp broken glass, vines, and snakes if you are really a hardcore. For a trick for them to get in but they cannot make it, put a ladder on the fence but when they try to climb on it, they get thorned by the nails and any sharp object. You can replace some parts of your garden a with a quick sand so that when they step on them it will take time for them to escape.
Edit: You cam also make your house look like a property of the army.
