  • According to FBI statistics, around 1.5 million burglaries took place in the US alone in 2017. But is there a way to protect your home from burglars if you can’t afford an expensive security system? Bright Side has collected simple yet effective tips that will help you protect your home and even discourage thieves from breaking into your property.
One of the popular way to enter a property is through first-floor windows. FBI reports show that around 23% of burglars in the US choose this way of entering homes. That’s why you should consider installing grilles if you live on the first or second floor. Don’t forget that you should have an escape route in case of an emergency, so buy grilles that can be unlocked. If you want to know what other ways to protect your home are, watch the video!

    SUMMARY:
    - While a plumber is fixing something under your sink, they have enough time to have a look around. They can turn out to be bad guys who inform their accomplices.
    - Some thieves get creative and use a landline phone trick where they call your home phone and wait for an answer. If no one picks up a phone, it means that nobody’s home.
    - The locks most at risk of lock snapping are cylinder ones; the most complicated locks are those that can be opened with lever keys.
    - Make it easy for the police to identify your house. Put a large reflective number on your house and mailbox. Burglars like to get into dark houses to win some extra moments to get out again.
    - Thieves are scared of being caught. A simple but extremely effective way of scaring them off is putting out a sign that says “Protected Property.” This trick will make burglars think twice before breaking in.
    - If you’re throwing away the box from a new TV or refrigerator, you’re likely to attract potential burglars who’ll want to steal your new item. To avoid trouble, tear the box apart before throwing it away.
    - Imagine you’re leaving your home for a while. You’re already in the street, and you suddenly notice a strange person. They might be waiting for you to leave so they can break in. Don’t be shy! Turn around, and wave your hand as if someone stayed at home.
    - If you notice scratches on your lock, it might mean that burglars have tried to open it. Before you open the door and enter your home, check your lock so that you can react quickly if there’s an emergency.
    - If windows are curtained for a few days in a row, it can indicate that nobody’s home as there aren’t many people who like to live without sunlight.
    - To turn an ordinary fence into a barrier, plant something with abrasive foliage (like a dog rose or dewberry plant). You can also plant roses right under your windows.
    - You should be careful with unfamiliar service companies that call and ask questions about your workplace and hours or about the people who live with you. It’s one of the methods thieves use to find out the history of a property and the most suitable time for breaking in.

Well, i have an lock on my front and back door. The anti burglars fact is that if the key at the inside is in the lock, then it can't be pushed out, and if the key isn't in the lock and someone is trying to get in by recking the lock, then it locks;) itselves up and can't be opent (except you break the whole door down wich won't go that easy)

yeah that was a terrible idea, considering most break-ins are done by friends, family, and neighbors. Also, he said to leave the curtains open, but it's a fact that most burglars check for that, and usually "case" the house before they break in, and look inside the windows, checking to see if the lights are on and if any movement is in the house, they don't like dogs, and they will leave if they see people, obviously... (hopefully).. I watched an interview with a former burglar and he said if those curtains are closed, they usually skip the house altogether... especially if a light is left on, and/or music/tv is playing. Also, a good lock is not a bad idea, but most consumer locks can be broken into so it doesn't matter which lock you have, really, and even if you have a good lock, chances are, the door can be kicked in anyways, without reinforced door frames.

I'm actually a parent and my daughter always stay outside. Once she saw a sketchy person so she walked up to him he told her If she could run 2 laps around the compound so she said sure why not. She actually didn't go, she stood behind the tree and saw him cracking our house door with a bobby pin, so she new he was a robber, so she came creeply to him and then jumped on him then pulled his hair she went nuts. She screamed so loud that when I was upstairs I could here her. And she did the unthinkable them hit him with her favorite frying pan
, Ok I know it's weird to bring a pan outside but she did it. He was uncounsus, and fell to the ground, while he was on the floor we called the cops and that's my story. Have a great day! And stay safe!

ALWAYS secure your shed where tools are kept (like hammers/axe/ladder) don't give a burglar what he needs to break into your home.
Ask one of your neighbours to empty your mail box while you're away. Piles of mail/papers/letters means you're out of town.
Kick your habit of showing if you're here or not, like raising your flag in the morning and tucking it before night, or open your front gate for the day. It shows to everyone if the owners are in or not.

I have one friendly advice for people who are protecting their homes: Don't worry about locking the door, just have a security system. This is coming from a person who's been broken in before. My garage door's doorknob was all broken and there was a huge hole we had to repair which just cost us more expenses. Let the burglar in, as the security system will ring anyways and notify the police.

I know someone who discovered a good security tip by accident.. They use to leave a light on at night even if they were home and even if they were asleep … so it looked like someone was up.. It cost a bit more on the electric.. A while later they purchased a couple of solar sensor security lights to place around the exterior of the property then realised they can be used inside also and they switch on and off automatically at dusk and dawn.. Great no more hyped up electric bills.. If you have a dog place windchimes near exits/entrances that you know do not have draughts. If someone tries to break in even silently they will set the chimes off.. alert the dog and the dog barking will alert you. In theory..

My house has specialised doors, which have breakable points in the lock, so if someone tries to pick it and damages the lock, it seizes up, and does the same if someone tries to force it open. It also uses a standard key as well as a hidden key fob.

  • @LiRuiMeng
    @LiRuiMeng Před 4 lety +1

Pretty good advice. Not all of it is the best though.
    11) turn down your house phone: Sure if youre 65 and still have a house phone.
    10) The first key, never tried to pick. Live in a country now that practice will happen (educationally of course). Cylinder style key, I could almost literally find trash to pick it.
6 ) Shred boxes: Yes, good idea, but more importantly is destroying any name or personal information on, in, or around the package.
5 ) Wave at an empty house: If you are a woman or a young boy, probably not a bad idea.
3 ) Open blinds, curtains, etc... That actually makes it very very easy for a criminal to know whats going on. With the contrast of dark outside and lights on inside, a criminal can see into your house very well while minimizing their chances of being seen. This idea is very bad.

Put CCTV cameras, Fences with sharp broken glass, vines, and snakes if you are really a hardcore. For a trick for them to get in but they cannot make it, put a ladder on the fence but when they try to climb on it, they get thorned by the nails and any sharp object. You can replace some parts of your garden a with a quick sand so that when they step on them it will take time for them to escape.
