Saw Tull live in the mid-1970s. Even though there were seats all the way to the stage, when the music started everyone stood up. Anderson abruptly stopped playing in mid-song and ordered everyone to sit so all could see. What a performer - and gentleman.
I saw him perfprm this very flute solo live twice in my younger days.....Ian Anderson is immensely talented. Best flute player on the planet...an under rated musician I think due to his on stage antics and his crazy demeanor. If you listen to his interviews though you find the real Ian...a very intelligent man...
I saw Jethro Tull live in my 21st bday and they played Bourée with that exact flute solo. To see an entire arena fall silent in awe is a special thing to witness
- IAN you are UNIQUE!!! .... gorgeous!!!! fantastic! I LOVE YOUR MUSIC!! I LOVE YOUR CREATIVITY..!imagination! fascination!!! Great of the Greatest!!!! This is TO BE A MUSICIAN!!...
I saw him do this solo twice live, up close to the stage, when I was a young man...it was stunning then and still is today. He is immenseley talented, under rated and in my opinion, the greatest flutist that has ever lived.
Certainly it's Altamiro Carrilho. Ian once received a DVD of Altamiro as a gift by a brazilian music journalist and said exactly this: "i'm just a mere flute blower"
🤯..for me .this is definitely his best work..this is a Flute..talented.. listening to this performance. over decades..never disappoints..pleasure increases.. thanks. ❤️🌬️🤯🌟
Ian's music is always groundbreaking going back to the earliest of Tull his charisma and originality always shook the musical world.. but then again how would I know mI was born in 88 XD
You made me go look it up now. lol www.ranker.com/list/best-flautists-in-the-world/ranker-music #4 on the list. Not sure if that's 4th best, or just a random listing. But he's there, none the less. As he should be. =)
How can you have a top 10 list or even a top 20 without James Moody??? Giant oversight! At least Jasmine Choi and of course Ian are on the list. Pictures of some validation. Moody is the man!
I have special relationship with Ian Andersons music. First reason is: it is beautifull and I listened to it since I was a kid. And second is my father. He first showed me this music and above that, my father looks exactly the same like Ian Anderson. Hah. Now, when they are both older, it is not so noticeable, but about twenty years ago they looked like monozygotic twins :D In all, the way he is widening his eyes, facial expression, hair... What a shame my father do not play flute :D
I wish the audio was in higher quality. Mono is so flat. But if this is all we can get, I'll take it with thanks, because this performance is incredible.
I have always liked Jethro Tull, but only ever heard studio stuff. This was very different from what I was expecting. I looked it up to show my daughter who is now playing flute. we both liked it. My questions were honest and well answered :) thanks for posting.
This reminds me of myself when practicing the flute. We may not be matched in talent, but we both noddle for a pro longed period of time and if we fall into a pre existing melody we just roll with it.
There is now a plaque outside a Church Hall in Bispham, a suburb of Blackpool. The plaque acknowledges the band's first ever gig. At the time, late 60s, Mr Anderson and one assumes his band mates were surprised, that girls had legs!!!!
I saw Jethro Tull in concert and English mixing and equipment were superior to any at the time and possible today. The sound was clear, perfectly balanced and powerful. They could take any studio recording and match it perfectly on stage. Extraordinary. Jethro Tull was tight!
appreciation of the day goes to: Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull In a time when hair grew long and the British guitar band scene was throbbing, Anderson said "fuck this guitar bullshit I'm gonna get some tights, an ascot and play the motherfucking flute and make bitches like me. Oh yeah and Im gonna make everyone in my band be straightedge." and so he did. Aqualong!
my ma learned by to be a floutest by listening to Ian Anderson. ( all Time Faves is Heav Horce album) She could not read a lick of musical notes but before she died of lung cancer she could do anything Ian Anderson did. including this magnificent piece he was her hero and he is mine.
It takes big man to play a short flute.....solo. Hey, I played the clarinet in HS so I know all the jokes. This band ROCKED some good tunes. Dare you to .....wait for it....have something bigger than a desktop speaker and jam Locomotive Breath. When the Bass shakes you, it shapes you baby!
And he bothered to re learn the flute because his daughter told him that he was playing it the wrong way?, shame on her!. Ian Anderson will go down in history for making the world a better place with his wonderful music.
And on this day in rock history, an arena full of people listened to a seven-minute flute solo and didn't even think it was weird.
+Trystaticus Hey man, we loved being weird back then...still do!
+creekster52 He was the only one to get away with flute at a rock concert....lol
Shane Richards You mean without getting beat up? LOL!
ROi baucanon
Indeed, they paid money in the hopes that they would see something like this, as would I.
Who the hell plays the flute like a rock'n'roll instrument?
Oh yeah, Ian Anderson.
Totally. Read this :D www.planetrock.com/music/backstage/editorial/jethro-tull-the-flute-is-a-heavy-instrument/
Try listening to Focus.
Ian bragged that he was the best and the worst flutist in rock and roll. At the same time, since he was the only one.
@@johancoetzer2165 well, now there's almost certainly more than one
So he can safely say he's only the best flutist in rock and roll

Hello Nova
Ian is self-taught, which is pretty amazing. Quite the showman!
Truly the Hendrix of the flute. It'll be a long time until we have another performer of this magnitude.
"The Hendrix on flute.." what a fine way to put it!
just gonna throw thijs van leer from focus into contention...respectfully as a Jethro fan.
By far the most intense flute playing I have ever seen. Ian Anderson, you are amazing.
There is much more for flute.. I would recommend you listen to Quantz music 😊
I Agree
Especially the snorting is really good. Nobody can like that.
i hope that flute is over 18..
Bruh...i just want to listen to some flute but no. No i had to get that in my head
Its ur fault coming down here to see comments lol
The "Flute", however, does not. The "Flute" wants to make as many Babies, as possible, as soon as possible, hence, the Human Depopulation Virus.

Ian puts his heart and soul into everything he does. I love this man.
literally magic is this performance , folklore spell, forest guardian, woodwind temple, goblin, faerie
Amazing octaves, glissando plus double and triple tonguing...just amazing Ian!
he was great in 1976 and he is magnificant, awesome, gorgeous, excellent, splendid, marvelous now!!!!!

Tell your girl you'll do her like Ian Anderson does the flute. If she gets it and smiles at you, she's the one
probably in her mid fifties too... :D
Ay I’m 15 and I would get that… sadly I’m not into older women. Or men
I love him concert when he would stand on one leg and then swing the flute around on the amp wire. Magic, what a freak.
oh Ian...I love you:-) You have inspired me so much...I have been playing flute for 30 years now...You are the best floutist in the world
I saw Tull in Virginia 75 and all the band members did a solo. Ian did his long flute solo standing on one leg.
The better to show off his codpiece.
I saw them play in Ohio in 1969. I remember him standing on one leg for quite some time dressed much like the Aqualung cover. It was quite a show.
I saw Jethro Tull live in my 21st bday and they played Bourée with that exact flute solo. To see an entire arena fall silent in awe is a special thing to witness
Holy... The things he does with this flute... Seriously amazing.
I'd liked it very much! Because I'm flautist too, and he's really great!!!
Who says you need a guitar to shred?
The Flute is a Trebje instrument as well. More incredulous..
- IAN you are UNIQUE!!! .... gorgeous!!!! fantastic! I LOVE YOUR MUSIC!! I LOVE YOUR CREATIVITY..!imagination! fascination!!! Great of the Greatest!!!!
This is TO BE A MUSICIAN!!...
Idk how many times I have listened this, but goose bumps everytime.
Holy guacamole! He is so amazing!!!! This is what I call music!!!!!!!!
It's the greatest flute solo I ever heard. Repect!
Noch immer so genial unterwegs, voll Enthusiasmus und sogar atemlos zum Zuhören.
I saw him do this solo twice live, up close to the stage, when I was a young man...it was stunning then and still is today. He is immenseley talented, under rated and in my opinion, the greatest flutist that has ever lived.
One of the greatest flutist's who ever existed!
if not THE greatest! :D
flautist
actually y'no it isn't incorrect to call them flutist's even sir James Galway said it himself... :)
Jophiel Nicholls: James Galway is awesome.

I think you could say he is one of the Greatest "Progressive" flautists you will ever hear.
@@budmangt2 there is my friend there is
He could have played for 70 minutes and we would have loved it.. and he is still brilliant

I WILL learn to play like this someday. That snort!!! LOL
The BEST 7 minutes of my life ...Why is this man not rated among the greats ? He has more talent than Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page put together....
jethromc people say he stop playing the guitar because Clapton was playing and he wanted to be different
You're probably pretty talented if he can do the guitar and the flute
This reminds me of myself when practicing the flute. We may not be matched in talent, but we both noddle for a pro longed period of time and if we fall into a pre existing melody we just roll with it.
That's cool. :) And i know what you mean. I play the sax, and it's fun to jam whatever comes into your mind
LOVE IT I WASN'T EVEN BORN YET
Wonderful musicality, great groove.
Who are those 31 people who gave this a thumbs down? I never got a chance to see him in concert, one of life's regrets.
Never realized so much vocal sounds came through during flute play.
A LEGEND. ❤
He is an amazing man!

His lungs and heart ❤️ amazing
The gasping and snorting for air definitely adds to the intensity.

Fun! Ian is both entertaining to listen to, and to watch.
Ian Anderson was the first to use Flute in rock music
Hats off to him ❤❤❤❤
flute genius, only needs two words
If you thing the flute doesn't go well with rock music, thats because you haven't heard Jethro "fuckin'" Tull.
