  • In this video, we will perform a dynamic impact analysis using Hypermesh and Radioss. We will be simulating ballistic impact of a bullet travelling at speed of 200kmph on an aluminum plate of thickness 3mm.
    Material failure criteria will also be specified to observe the penetration of the bullet through the wall.
    Radioss explicit dynamic solver will be used to run the simulation and post-processing will be done in Hyperview.

      Good observation! To reduce the solving time, we have used a coarse mesh for the wall in this particular case.

    • @Aeroswap
      @Aeroswap  Před rokem +2

      Hey Alberto,
      In this particular case, the bullet is a non-deformable rigid. However, it is possible to make the bullet deformable if you want to do that.

    • @AlbertCM1199
      @AlbertCM1199 Před rokem +1

      @@Aeroswap in fact, I have also a non-deformable rigid in my simulation so it´s really useful for me thank you so much!! Additionally, I would like to ask you about the definition of the material failure. Why do you do that in this video?? I mean is it necessary when you define a non-deformable rigid?? I watched your other video about the dynamic crash analysis and you didn´t define the material failure. I was wondering what is the difference between defining or not defining the material failure? Thank u in advance! Your videos are really helpful for beginners like me!!

    • @Aeroswap
      @Aeroswap  Před rokem +1

      Maybe my previous answer was not clear, apologies for that. Please let me clarify. The bullet is a rigid but the plate is still deformable. The material failure is defined for the plate, not the bullet. I hope that makes sense.

  • @kenkim2687
    @kenkim2687 Před 4 lety +1

    I’ve analyzed a similar model as yours when I worked on a cockpit door materials evaluation. Such a great example of tasting dynamic analysis. Quick question, how did you determine your D1-D5 values? You mentioned you have tested and determined subjectively, could you show us how you got those values?

    • @Aeroswap
      @Aeroswap  Před 4 lety +1

      To start with, I referred the Radioss user manual. In the 'Failure' section, detailed information is provided about every paramater from D1 upto D5. Along with this, default values to be used are also provided.
      I simulated my first run with these default values. After observing the results, I started tweaking individual paramaters as per my material definition and ran an iteration for every change.
      I continued this till I could see a proper element deletion without extra material removal or excessive stiffness in the results.
      But this is not an industry standard! Usually, the values of D1-D5 are predetermined and must not be changed. The only changes acceptable are in the property and contact formulation.
      As this was just a tutorial with no practical significance, I decided it was okay to go with the trial-and-error iterative process!

    • @kenkim2687
      @kenkim2687 Před 4 lety +1

      Aeroswap thank you for the details, unless provided by the supplier or lab it make sense to iterate the values to determine appropriate element deletion for the failure criteria.
