Spooking fish part really hit home. Can't tell you how many times it's happened to me on Erie tribs. I have to constantly remind myself to slow down...we are not racing. 😂😂
Yeah. Learning to stalk fish and pay attention to every detail can be crucial on those streams!
Great video as always
Thank you sir!
great channel! subscribed
Thank you!
Finally , found the chance to view your Part 3. It’s yet another amazing and well put together video that describes literally everything you’ll possibly run into on a steelhead river/medium or small stream. Really like how you use examples and actual experiences that you have either had success with or not so much. These fish are not an easy trout to figure out and everything that you have portrayed is done so in such a way to improve one’s success and what to look for or adapt to given the conditions and pressure on a given steelhead water. Excellent info. that we all can go back and view at our leisure before we make a trip out there. Also, looking forward to your next one where I’ll be focusing in on how to fight and net or land one of those gorgeous Steelies! Great job yet again Bryan! Appreciate all your time and hard work in trying to help us all out!
Thank you, Jim! Really appreciate your comment and support. It’s fun putting the pieces together and learning. Every trip I feel like I learn something.
Do you streamer fish for steelhead?
If so will you be covering that as well?
Thank you
Great series by the way
Hi. I know this might be a silly question, but could you please tell me if it's absolutely required to have fly fishing gear for Euro-nymphing? I mean, is it possible to achieve the same results with a spinning rod and reel? I'm asking because I've never used fly fishing gear before, but I am proficient with spinning, and I have a lot of spinning gear. However, now I am considering whether to dive deeper into fly fishing or to achieve similar results with my spinning gear.
Euro nymphing is similar to bottom bouncing with a spinning rod. In fact many euro nymphers don't use a fly line at all anymore and use a mono rig so it is more similar than people like to admit. You could certainly add a sighter section to your line with your spinning setup and then essentially is the same setup minus the rod and reel. Finding a good rod for euro with a spinning setup might be a challenge. I would go with a longer rod if possible. You want it to have a good backbone but more of a medium action where the rod bends through the top half pretty easily. It can absolutely be done though.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany thanks a lot for response
I need to learn how to Net Steelhead without a friend. lol
Fighting and Landing Steelhead, on your own or with others, is the next video! There is a section just on netting.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany thanks
@@arachnoskull6311 In general, here are the keys. Use a short handle net like the one linked in the description. It is much more manageable than a long handle net when on your own. When attempting to land the fish by yourself, get the fish upstream of you. Lift the head of the fish to turn it on its side and let the current bring the fish back to you. Take a stop forward at the right time and left he net to net the fish. I struggled for years until I figured this out.
It is much better for steelhead if you don’t net it. The best is to learn how to land it safely and release it without taking it out of water if possible
@@Leavenotraceexpeditions I find very few people can land a steelhead effectively without a net.. (most can't do it with a net lol). They end up beaching them or fighting them too long. Using the right net, learning how to do it effectively and handling the fish appropriately results in a healthy fish and release in my experience. Not saying you can't do it effectively without a net at all.. but if I'm going to teach a way to do it that benefits more people and fish, it is with a net.
I am truly interested in your input as to tips to land them without a net though. How do you gain control of them and protect them in the process?
It’s funny that chuck and duck is now called euro nymphing …. “Fly fishing” Couldn’t be more pretentious … tie on your “sighter” you wont need it but you’ll look cool
