im most impressed by the fact that you've managed to keep the same pick for years. thats crazy.
Right? I can set one down for five seconds, blink, and suddenly it has teleported away to the Plane of Lost Socks.
Finally! I was trying to figure out which type of mandolin it was. Thank you, love the shorts!
Yes, extra inches is always nice to have...
... on an octave mandolin.
💯 I mean...who WOULDN'T welcome a couple of extra inches? In an octave mandolin.
The sounds that come from your octave are truly amazing!
Yeah thanks for sharing all the songs you do.❣️🎶😎
I will indeed be getting one someday, that and also a Lute! Can't wait to hear more music!
Thank You so much for this video! I saw your octave mandolin in other videos And I also was very curious about it. I recently start to play an irish bouzouki that I've bought in Gaillimh.
Thanks for your music you're amazing!! Go raibh maith agat!
This is great and adds to the spec you'd given ... thank you.
Very cool. I've been playing mandolin for about 15 years but I think I need to get an octave mandolin now. Sounds amazing!
Im very impressed how you have skills to play and also many diffrent clothes. God bless you
Love listening to you. I have an Irish bouzouki, tuned to ADAD; I may try tuning it to octave mando for a break.
That was content-free.
I love Weber, used to have a Beartooth mandolin. Thanks for the great music 🎶😊. Found you recently while "revisiting" steeleye span ...
Ich liebe deine Videos ! Du hast ein riesiges Talent!
Thanks very much, I've just subscribed to your channel, I've always loved your playing. I've used Wegen picks for about six years and love them, but I've never thought of concealing a pick like that? I'll try that on Tenor guitar. Take care, David.
Thanks for bringing the octave forward. And the focus on quality traditional Celtic using. I’m about 5 decades ahead of you but of similar ilk. Besides playing mandolin, mandola, bouzouki & bass mandolin + (with my trio Mandology and with the Albuquerque Mandolin Orchestra) I do frequent house concerts here in Albuquerque. Please be in touch if you want to take it on the road. Host workshops as well (since you like to teach.). Host the annual Zoukology first weekend in February. Faculty is set for this year, but you’d clearly be a good fit.
I am a huge fun, and I would beg you to try and play greek Bouzouki at some point. I d love to see how it compares as an experience to your octa mandoline. Again, huge fun, love your work.
Same strings, same pick on my Weber mandolin. I really want an octave mandolin! ❤
Sweet.
Thanks for the information! I must admit I was surprised to hear a non-Irish accent 😂
I have a 24 year old Peterson Octave mandolin that has broken in nicely! I bought it new from Elderly in 1999.......It's a 20 inch scale.......
Hello from Brazil!!
Just bought an octave mandolin because of your videos! Keep up the great work with content!
First off, love all your videos! Made me restring my old mandolin I haven’t touched in well over a decade!
Second, is there a non-Reels version of your gold tune octave mandolin recommendation video? I don’t have Instagram.
Finally, do you know how to play the mandolin portion of Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters by Elton John? I can’t find any tablature or even sheet music anywhere for it.
Sorry if you’ve answered all or a couple these on your Patreon. I’ll check there if so. Thank you!
Hello Tim! Yes! The Goldtone video is in my CZcams shorts as well 😉
Hi, may I use a irish Bouzouki tuned like an Octave mandolin? (and a capo)
I've thought about learning Octave Mandolin, since the higher pitches of Mandolin doesn't sit with me too well. I also found Irish/Celtic tunes more interesting than Bluegrass.
Hello!
I play the guitar but watching your videos made me want to buy an octave mandolin :)
Do you have any recommendations for entry level ones? I just found a "Thomann Octave Mandolin 1087A-P" from Thomann around here (I live in the UK), but I'm not sure if it is worth paying that little for it or if it would be a waste of money.
Thoughts on the Easton vs the Goldtone?

Thank you! I just got an octave mandolin. Could you tell me the model # of your Wegen pick? It looks like the Triangular TF but would like to know if its TF-100, 120 or 140? Thanks so much!
Are the neck and the top made from Mahagoni as well?
So basically you are saying if I tune my octave to GDAD i can play bouzuki music? or aka irish and celtic tunes? thanks
I'd normally be hesitant to buy picks at $10 a pop because they like to run away when you aren't looking, but I've heard really good things about Wegen. Your pick looks like a TF - just curious, which do you prefer, the TF100, 120, or 140?
Hiya, Love your music. I play guitar and Ukelele (tuned differently to each other) and I would love to have a go at the octave mandolin (bouzouki?) (also tuned differently) but I cannot find one to buy (looked on Ebay and Google to no avail). Where could I buy one? (like yours) :o) Ian
Hello love! Mine is a Weber. You might check out the Gold Tone OM 80 octave mandolin, it’s great quality for the price 🙂
I've been thinking about buying one. I play Mandolin. Is the transition between instruments difficult?
It can be! I studied electric bass and cello before learning octave mando, so that helped with the transition. Maybe check out some left hand stretches for playing bass 🤔
Octave mandolins are so expensive. I'd like to buy one but I can't bring myself to justify spending $800..
Same here. Convert a cheap travel guitar to OMfor short money.
@@mojoefelix I was thinking of that with a 3/4 size guitar. Also, a regular 12 string can be sorta, kinda converted. Remove top E strings and G strings, move bottom E & B strings up one position. Tune A strings to G, leave D strings as is. Tune former B strings to A, Bottom strings, formerly in B position to E. Of course using proper gauge strings.
I would suggest you to invest in an irish bouzouki, if that is cheaper (I think it is). Or you can make your own octave mandolin at home - it's not easy, but with the right tools, it's achiavable. I made mine over 3-4 weeks.
Hey Eva! I like the wegen picks also! I use the smaller mandolin ones on my dulcimers !
Isn’t “Bouzouki” another name for this instrument?
The term "octave mandolin" (OM) is more or less interchangeable with "Irish bouzouki" (IB). Greek bouzoukis are a totally different beast. Both OMs and IBs are usually tuned in GDAE or GDAD and obviously you can jump between those as you see fit. The biggest difference is typically just scale length, with IBs being a little bit longer. You can find OMs advertised as short-scale IBs, etc.
that's what she said 0:34
You're accent was so surprising. For some reason I was certain you were European.
You so amazing! Greetings from Russia!
