  • I came home from Nashville today to find the most beautiful instrument lying on my bed! I transposed a piece from my cello studies to help get acquainted with it. Thank you Weber Family! I can't put it down! Keep in touch with SHEL - shelmusic.com

    I think one of the wonderful things (among many) about Bach is how beautifully his pieces translate to different instruments. I play this piece on my bass clarinet for example and totally enjoy it even if Bach probably never heard a clarinet in his life. Thanks so much for your beautiful and soulful playing too. Found it very inspirational!

    Never imagined one of the Cello Suites would sound so amazing on a mandolin, but it totally works! Masterfully played.

    Wonderful! Great transcription too; can't see your right hand in the video but not so easy to go from bowing to flat picking, I'd imagine. Love to hear you play some Granados (Danza Espanola?) on the mandolin or octave mandolin sometime. You are a treasure!

    I have a Gibson L48 that kept breaking strings, so I finally gave in and let it be what it really wanted to be, a mandocello, with four strings. Hidden in the Bach cello suites I found all these wonderful jazz chords and used them to construct new works, in a very Brazilian mode. The journey never ends. This is some beautiful playing. Thanks!

    After hearing it on that, the octave mandolin, I think it sounds more appropriate to the cello composition. I hear this a lot on mandolin and play it on mandolin--it sounds almost like something written for the sonatas/partitas on that, but on this, indeed the intent for the cello is more obvious. The fingering is more challenging on this as well.
    Excellent!

    Octave mandolin can also be called tenor mandolin since it is tuned exactly like a tenor violin where mandolins are tuned exactly like violins, and like an irish tenor banjo that is tuned the same, whereas a normal mandolin as in bluegrass band is the alto mandolin ones.

  • @ised-5239
    @ised-5239 Před 4 lety

    Octave mandolin is a mandolin tuned one octave below the regular mandolin and a mandola tuned one octave below the regular mandola is called a mandocello.

    @mcrkid22 Yes, I realize that. Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin were masters on the mandolin as well as many other stringed instruments. Jones especially is a very underrated musician & this tune reminds me of their concert at Earls Court in London way back in the 70's. Page & Jones did an entire set of acoustic songs while Plant sang along.

    That Weber is certainly a nice instrument, with a decent amount of sustain, unlike those with the percussive 'Gibson sound' which doesn't really suit this kind of music. Of course the Bach Cello suites work well on a Tenor Mandola as they were originally written for the Tenor Violin, also known as the 'Violoncello Piccolo' which uses exactly the same tuning. You play it well.
