Make texture patterns around the center light fitting
In this short video version here, I share tips & techniques plus creative ideas for adding hand made textured Medallion effects to ceilings inside your home.
Thank you for watching
Dale I believe this is a lost art.. not at all "dated" you are a wonderful teacher and I appreciate you posting these tutorials.
+Bary Waddell Thank you Bary for your support in hand comb textures, and also your kind words. I know opinions will always differ when it comes to ceiling & wall decor. Have a great day. Thanks for posting your comment
Maybe some patterns around light switches, Electrical outlets, and possibly corners would look extra fancy. The fancy patterns on the ceiling around electrical fixtures obviously looks the best though.
I absolutely adore ceiling medallions...I am going to try this really soon..I hope that I will be half as good as you are. Simply beautiful.
+Dee Exx that is great hope you do well. Thanks for commenting
That's a great idea, and looks fantastic! 🤠 It seems like a perfect texturing idea for around ceiling & wall lights, chandelier, and ceiling fans.
Hi Joshua, thank you for all your amazing comments. Hope you have a go at this yourself. Have a great day
Dude you are an artist. Love it
Cheers, Dennis. You are most welcome. Have a great day
hey this is a really nice video beautiful end product you created and thanks for showing the tools used and such but would have been a little better had you actually showed some of the technique
Hi there magic mushroom, thank you for watching the video. I wanted to make this film showcasing just some of the capabilities of creative texturing and comb tools used, but not intending to give too much away, as I have the full 45 minute instructional video on offer, (or I sometimes give as a freebie with certain texture comb tool packages.) All the same, I hope you enjoyed the film, thanks for commenting
Love this but I wish he had showed us how it was done as opposed to just the materials - the actual steps and how to work combs. But it is pretty.
That's great plips71755. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for commenting. Have a great day
Sorry Dale it seems so outdated I was a plasterer in the UK and in the late 80s did an texturing course learning the brush and comb patterns , did that for about five years then spent the next ten years skimming plaster over walls and ceilings to make them flat again . Don't tell me its all coming back lol
+Keith Hope Hey Keith, how are you
I hasten to say there is a vast interest in comb ceiling / wall textures in many countries worldwide.
Some folk just love textured finishes, and some just love a flat smooth finish. And the trend goes on, all down to personal preference.
The full 43 minute version (of this actual short video) was designed as a step by step tutorial and covers many 'all important aspects of surface preparation prior to texturing,' mixing texture to the correct consistency for comb-work, transferring mixed texture from the bucket / trough to the ceiling, and steps on using comb tools to create fine textures.
The full version DVD was originally aimed towards folk wishing to know more about the art of texturing and of comb tool usage, plus a practitioner will have the knowledge and confidence to practice the techniques and has a finished product/attraction which is a hand made textured center-piece done the DIY way that he/she will be proud of
I know I am being extremely generous on aspects of information provided to those learning comb textures (the full 43 minute DVD version of this short demo is actually free.)
So I buy each DVD from the company where the mastercopy is uploaded, and send it out packaged to folk who purchase a set of comb tools from website (www.lookreadlearn.com)
Hopefully the full DVD tutorial has aided viewers to grasp the concepts of comb texturing, and the tutorial will continue to do so in the future
All the best Keith, thanks for commenting, it's good to communicate with seasoned professionals such as yourself
Onesimo. B.A
Is very good
Thank you
I did this back in 1990s. I used a dustbin lid and worked inwards with ever smaller lids to make a giant fan. Also masking tape cut to patterns stuck on then pulled off when texture is still wet can be used. I used to do lightning down a wall with tape. You can do a bark pattern and roll the pattern around a swirl for a knot, flatten then alow to dry. Apply wood stain and artex looks like wood. Lost skills soon as I don't get asked. You done a good job of fan.
Wow how did you even.. never mind your a master!!
Come on Jacob, I bet you say that to all the texture'rs. Thanks for commenting happy you enjoyed the video
Amazing work Dale Ovenstone! There are similar textures like that here in the US. They're not as pronounced or as detailed as your comb textures. But the only places I've seen them is on older plaster homes and buildings from the 1950's and earlier. Where can I get those type of texturing combs that you're using in the video? I would like to give a go and maybe even offer it as one of my services in a few years after practicing.
Paul Peck Coming up with the idea of creating hand-made textured ceiling medallions was because a practitioner could still offer a piece of eye-candy, onto a flat ceiling, either for themselves or for their customers. There are so many more combinations of various medallions to do, and not just the 5 I show in the full 43 minute tutorial video. The best part is, if someone is totally new to creating textures using comb tools, making these simple patterns is ideal for getting used to all the concepts of texturing with combs, ready to have a go at full patterns; the preparation of the surface, the sealer/primer to diminish porousity, the correct consistency of mud for combing, all good stuff, especially for beginners, as well as pros' like yourself. There are many texturing ideas and effects on www.lookreadlearn.com
*SHOW US HOW TO DO IT!!!*

Hi Dale. Could you please tell me the exact name of the “texturing plaster” that we could purchase here in the US. Could you actually recommend the name of a product that sold in the US? Thank you!!!!
Good morning Roberto. There was a product a customer purchased, it was called HAMILTONS. Which was sold in a large plastic container. I have not used myself but only from what the chap told me. The compound/product is for 'drywall' 'mudding' 'ceiling wall textures' There are other products out there available it would be wise to jump onto a DRYWALL FORUM and obtain some insight from users there. Hope this helps please let me know
Hi Dale.
Have you got a video of this actually being done. Would like to do my own living room lights, but would like to see how the master goes about it first, cheers.
