    Inb4 "You say you're competitive but you're gold in Apex ranked" ... yeah because I don't play ranked. Here in Aus, you get up to Platinum and then have to play on high ping. A lot of great players are in pubs here because of that, so it's more fun just hot dropping and messing around.
    Also LOL at trying to go competitive in Apex; super random, buggy "let's give controllers aim assist to the point pros switch to it from mouse and keyboard" game. Hard pass from me. I'll play it because I love it and it's fun, not because I want to test my skills. I have Quake for that. 😊

      I’m so glad you’ve highlighted the controller aim assist Crossplay in what is sold as a skill-based game. It’s a crock of shit. If this was the 90s/ early to mid 00s the current competitive scene would be laughed out of the door.

      Yeah, people never understand the problems with our region.
      In CS:GO prior to the changes... You'd get hard blocked around MG2 as higher was such as small pool of players / cheaters.
      Same in Overatch... In 2017 I was Diamond and playing with my friends (mixture of Plat / Diamond) and we vs'ed top 500's / GM's. One of them disconnected right at the start so it was 6v5 and we still got steam rolled.
      OCE problems..

      Haha I never got around to playing apex but I do remember some of us Q3A players saying t3>t4 for this reason lmao. Back when t4 was considered top online. I have a G9 Neo. My highest competitive level is in racing games. I'm not currently but I have been in top 500 global leaderboards in multiple racing games (Dirt Rally 2.0 is the most notable).
    The 32 by 9 aspect ratio really shines in racing games, where I can play in cockpit view with no UI. This has several advantages. The biggest one is immersion. I'm using the instruments of the car to get info, not some off to the side tacked on UI element. Another is car feedback. Having the car around you provides another layer of feedback from the car that can communicate grip, speed, weight transfer, and other important information to the driver. In a 16 by 9 aspect ratio, this would come at the cost of visibility, as your eyes can't sweep across the viewing area and keep focus where you need to, on top of the fact that your worldview is too narrow to keep track of important elements of the environment and how they relate to the edges of your vehicle. In 32 by 9, it's all the benefits, but none of the weaknesses.
    I'd say the next most beneficial game type is anything that involves stealth. You just have so much more ability to stay aware of your surroundings with the wider screen. The benefits start to drop off a bit after those two game types, but it's still nice from an experience and immersion perspective, which is where my priorities are. I like to be competitive, but it's not my biggest priority when it comes to gaming.

    For what it's worth, burn in is an issue even in full screen, ammo counter, health bar, score board, ext. Any overlay is there for quite a while. They design most OLEDs to help mitigate burn in, but it will always be an issue if you game for long sessions

      @RocketJumpNinja  Před rokem +1

      Yeah agreed. I think this would've been super expensive regardless of which panel type they used though. Even that LG 38" 144hz Nano-IPS monitor was just shy of 3k AUD (Aussie Dollar), so this being about the same price is actually reasonable considering what you're getting. The Samsung G9 was up there too, which is 240Hz VA but super ultrawide and 49".

      @arnoldnym2466 Před rokem

      @@RocketJumpNinja Oh yeah, I agree. Corsair kept it reasonable considering the novelty of the monitor and its features. I hit top 1% on a few games like overwatch, fortnite, and predecessor. Currently learning apex and I am high plat. All of this was on a 3440x1440 monitor. I've debated on downsizing to have a better stream output, but once you go ultrawide you never go back. I'm upgrading to the Xeneon flex to combine my work setup with the KVM functionality. Inb4 text fringe, I literally couldn't care less.

    @Spinelli__ Před rokem +1

    The reason you get so much stretching on Quake is because of the high FOV you're playing on. Higher the FOV, the more the stretching. I don't think it has anything to do with how old the game is as long as you're able to set the game to your monitor's resolution. When playing with a monitor with a wide aspect ration like a 21:9 (let alone something like a 32:9), now you're getting even more horizontal FOV which will make the stretching even worse. It's like playing a game with triple 16:9 monitors. You get insane stretching. The only way to have less stretching is to reduce the FOV so everything became bigger and more realistically sized and scaled (but negatively affecting your peripheral vision) or by playing a game that has independent rendering for each monitor but sadly mostly only racing sims have this even like 20 years later.
    Game makers need to start including options for stretching. At the very least, they need to include options that allow to compensate for curved screens. At the same vertical FOV, a curved screen should be giving us more horizontal vision than the same, exact size monitor but in a non-curved version. Gamers aren't really getting what they should from their curved monitors until the curve is applied to the games' settings.

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  Před rokem

      The FOV stretching happens on the sides. The stretching I'm talking about is referring to what's in the middle of the screen, because it's trying to render a 16:9 image on a 21:9 resolution. Go into Photoshop, take a screenshot at 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 (16:9), then stretch it to 2560x1080 or 3440x1440 (21:9). That's what's happening.
      Or you can do it reverse. Screenshot 21:9 and then transform > distort and then resize it to a 16:9 resolution. That will make Quake Live look normal again. Just a game engine problem unfortunately.

    • @Spinelli__
      @Spinelli__ Před rokem

      I would hope for Micro LED. OLED has too many problems. Micro LED is gonna be awesome, in...... 15 to 20 years. I want a 21:9 ultrawide but most video content is 16:9. So watching youtube will wear the middle of the oled panel out fast and I imagine when it does a whole panel refresh it reduces voltage to those sides that haven't seen alot of use to match up with the worn out middle. It's all too risky. I'd be happy with a 34inch ultrawide 240hz fast Samsung VA I think.... until micro led. They just don't have it.

  • @Mog780
    @Mog780 Před rokem +3

    Thought I'd weigh in my 2 cents here, having competed in ALGS qualifier on a 21:9 and being exclusively on 21:9 for around 4 years. The biggest issue with being competitive on 21:9 is gaming compatability, valorant for example just gives black bars, and other high intensity esports like the original overwatch and starcraft is a bit of a pain. But single player experiences, most rts and mobas are superior. I use a 175hz oled and would never go back to ips, if you're fine with compatability and don't care to go into the top 0.0001% of gamers, the overall user experience on a 21:9 is far superior. I have a bunch of 21:9 apex footage on my channel.

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  Před rokem +1

    • @Mog780
      @Mog780 Před rokem +1

      @Rocket Jump Ninja competitive apex was fun to an extent, I played as igl / anchor with gibby, but we didn't get past the 2nd round of qualifiers and I had just started working so I got dropped from my team. Ive since taken a more casual approach to the game since at the top level i just get killed by a roller 9 times out of 10. Gameplay wise, in my opinion runs very well but has dropped in later seasons, I found that the sweet spot for me was 80fov at full res, I found that my aim was a little off with the full FOV at max, but this was only prevalent on apex. QC and Q3/Quake Live my aim felt great on max FOV. The main reason I found apex working so well was everything, at the time scaled well to the wider aspect ratio, while still maintaining the high fps I needed to be competitive. Games like MW2019 took a bug hit in the fps department on release, and OW1 had no 21:9 (not that was worth using, it limited ur fov to like 50) so from a Purley performance point of view, it was the best fps.

    Nice review. Thank you for it.
    The burn-in risk and other inherent problems of OLED are why I plan to stick to high refresh rate LCDs. I'll wait until microLED comes to make every previous display technology obsolete (And no, microLED is not MiniLED. MiniLED is different and inferior.)
    MicroLED is coming to TVs already and is similar to OLED, but it's not organic material. Every pixel is an inorganic LED, so it's superior to OLED in multiple ways, including lifespan. It has no burn-in or image retention problems. It can get brighter than OLED. It's much quicker than OLED in pixel response time; we're talking about nanoseconds here, not microseconds or milliseconds. We may or may not see computer monitors with microLED later this decade; I think it's coming some time before the 2040s.

    • @Ir0n_One
      @Ir0n_One Před rokem

      MicroLED is so far away from being ready for consumer market. Current energy regulations also make it completely infeasible for private use. We can enjoy another 10+ OLED generations before microLED. And if it ever comes it will have new problems. Side fact, conventional LEDs age as well and OLEDs slowly close the gap with new materials.

      Burn in is not concern when playing games or media-consumption (watching films), because the pixels are changing all the time (maybe aside from HUD/UI). Concern rises in more static work environment, like office, programming or media creation.
      Even if nothing happens in one or two years - one would expect to last such expensive monitor (OLED or not) to last longer, like 5+ years. I still have monitors from over decade ago - they are inferior now, but still work and are enough for basic usage.

    oled is overrated imo for competitive. no clue why people want deeper blacks for shooters so you can watch your enemies disappear even more. perhaps im misunderstanding something though. also question zy. why u no use rivatuner to limit fps? i've always had issues with screen "flutter" with other limiters but i've never owned a higher specd monitor. aoc 24g2 is the best i've ever owned.

      Yeah that's a good point ... I would've said it's more for the pixel refresh time, I mean even without DyAc it doesn't blur the text while strafing past it in Overwatch, so that should be great for keeping enemies clear as they strafe/move around corners.

      People want oled for the pixel response times not the deeper blacks! You can adjust the blacks to what you want them to be just like every other monitor.
      Nothing beats the responsive of oled.

      OLED response time is superior to any LCD, so you don't get to see motion blur or previous frames as the pixels are still shifting. But then, currently OLEDs go only as far as 240Hz, while LCDs have models up to 500Hz - you get to see more frames more quickly.

      You cant say oled is overrated and only have used a 24g2 lol. Thats like saying a tesla is overrated and only driving a toyota aygo.

      Well it has potential to show you darker shades than an LCD, so you‘ll see more on the same Gamma curve. Low end gamma can still be raised as on all monitors e.g. with Shadow Boost/Black Equalizer etc.

    "I want to move to ultrawide" except that this monitor is NOT ultrawide....it's literally not.

    Judging by your aspect ratio in your new videos, I assume you bought this monitor?
    Have you gotten any burn-in yet?

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  Před rokem

      Yeah I bought this one ... and no, no burn in, I've been leaving it on a black screen every time I walk away from the computer or I'm doing something like text editing on another monitor. So I'll only use this monitor when I'm actually doing something with a lot of motion on it. That said, I have made a few mistakes with it and it's automatically dimmed itself, so seems to have decent defenses to stop the burn in. I'm probably a bad test because I'm trying to make sure there's no burn in. I should've treated the demo version like a regular monitor to see if it would get burn in, but I treated that one really well too!

      @@RocketJumpNinja Hmm didn't you say you wanted an super ultrawide like this mainly for productivity? Adobe Premiere and Fruity Loops don't exactly have motion over the whole screen.
      I've read multiple people online saying it's actually quite difficult to burn in modern OLED displays, even with a lot of static colors. Maybe it only becomes a problem when the brightness is raised to the maximum.
      According to the rtings long-term test, it's becoming apparent that LG W-OLED panels are more resistant to burn-in than QD-OLED.

      That's good to hear. And yeah I edit videos on this, but I have the apps fullscreen and then alt tab to a folder to get a file, or maximise a window, so I'm still refreshing all the pixels. Plus breaks. Haven't done anything with music lately but I'll probably just follow similar principles.
