  • Ancient Lithuanian war song “Žvingia, žvingia (Neighs, neighs) performed by Lithuanian band Ugniavijas. This song is particularly interesting, because it is one of the few songs about saving or bringing back a soldier from the war. Very few of those are known.
This is a live acoustic performance from the band's concert in November 9th 2019 in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Lithuanian and English lyrics provided below.
Many thanks to Gintautas Mauricas for recording this video.
    Dainos žodžiai:
Žvingia žvingia širvas žirgas unt stainias,
Verkia verkia mus bralalis ant vainas.
Aš nusiųsiu margą paukštį in tėvų,
Kad vaduotų manį jaunų iš vainas,
Kad parduotų parų jaučių dėl manį.
    Neparduosiu paras jaučių dėl tavį,
    Nevaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas.
Žvingia žvingia širvas žirgas unt stainias
Verkia verkia mus bralalis ant vainas.
Aš nusiųsiu margą paukštį in mamų,
Kad vaduotų manį jaunų iš vainas,
Kad parduotų parų karvių dėl manį.
    Neparduosiu paras karvių dėl tavį,
    Nevaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas.
Žvingia žvingia širvas žirgas unt stainias,
Verkia verkia mus bralalis ant vainas.
Aš nusiųsiu margą paukštį in bralį,
Kad vaduotų manį jaunų iš vainas.
Kad parduotų parų žirgų dėl manį.
    Neparduosių paras žirgų dėl tavį,
    Nevaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas.
Žvingia žvingia širvas žirgas unt stainias,
Verkia verkia mus bralalis ant vainas.
Aš nusiųsiu margą paukštį in sesį,
Kad vaduotų manį jaunų iš vainas,
Kad parduotų rūtų daržų dėl manį.
    Neparduosiu rūtų daržų dėl tavį,
    Nevaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas.
Žvingia žvingia širvas žirgas unt stainias
Verkia verkia mus bralalis ant vainas.
Aš nusiūsiu margą paukštį in mielų,
Kad vaduotų manį jaunų iš vainas,
Kad parduotų aukso žiedų dėl manį.
Aš parduosiu aukso žiedų dėl tavį,
Aš vaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas,
Aš vaduosiu tavį jaunų iš vainas.
    English lyrics:
A grey horse neighs in the barn
Our brother crying deeply in the war.
I will send a colourful bird to my father‘s,
So he could save me from the war,
So he could sell a couple of bulls for me.
I won‘t sell a couple of bulls for you,
I won‘t save you young from the war.
A grey horse neighs in the barn
Our brother crying deeply in the war.
I will send a colourful bird to my mother‘s,
So she could save me from the war,
So she could sell a couple of cows for me.
I won‘t sell a couple of cows for you,
I won‘t save you young from the war.
A grey horse neighs in the barn
Our brother crying deeply in the war.
I will send a colourful bird to my brother‘s,
So he could save me from the war,
So he could sell a couple of horses for me.
I won‘t sell a couple of horses for you,
I won‘t save you young from the war.
A grey horse neighs in the barn
Our brother crying deeply in the war.
I will send a colourful bird to my sister‘s,
So she could save me from the war,
So she could give her Rue‘s flower-garden for me.
    I won‘t give my Rue‘s flower-garden for you,
I won‘t save you young from the war.
A grey horse neighs in the barn
Our brother crying deeply in the war
I will send a colourful bird to my dear one‘s,
So she could save me from the war
So she could give her ring of gold for me.
I will give my ring of gold for you,
I will save you young from the war.

Keistoka. Proporcingai prastėjant moderniajai muzikai, pradėjau vis labiau domėtis senesne, iki kol priėjau prie štai tokių. Ir išties, kuo pasaulis darosi vis materialesnis, žmones pasiilgsta paprastesnių dalykų, dvasingumo, gamtos. Nuoširdi pagarba, vyrai.

Im a lifelong english speaker of largely British ancestry, and hearing these songs gives me goose bumps. Theres something ethereal to these chants. Something deep and eternal that words cannot explain, something that used to be a part of greater Europe but is now very rare and hard to find but seems to be exhibited just under the surface in the folk of Lithuania, and it touches my heart deeply.

Very little has been passed down through the generations and I am trying to reconnect to find out more about my ancestors and their traditions. @@vasanthakumar526 I’ve done research about this and I’ve read comments relating to this, it’s so fascinating even the language maintains conservative roots to the proto indo European language (alongside ancient Vedic Sanskrit) which baffles linguists seeing how an ancient Baltic language has relations with a language from India 😎

@@mravalik வணக்கம் (Vanakkam) sir. Mikka Nandri, Ungalai kandadhil/sandhithadhil magizhci. Yes I am Tamil. What you have said is absolutely right. I saw your comments in Tamil language related videos. I see your comment in this video too that you are an American-Lithuanian so that I share this fact. Almost the Lithuanian and Vedic gods are same.
Vedic gods - Lithuanian pagan gods
      Indra - Perkunas (thunder God)
      Agni - Gabija (Fire goddess)
      Bhumi - Zemyna (Earth/land goddess)
And the list go on but I forgot most of them so I stop here.
Today Hinduism is slightly different from Proto - European pagan religion because
Hinduism = Vedic culture + Dravidian folk cultures (mainly Tamizh culture) + Other local Indian folk culture. Vedic culture was brought to India by Aryans and the Vedic sanskrit is the holy language of Vedas. So India retains the old European pagan practices in the form of Hinduism. Now Lithuania 🇱🇹 brought it's Baltic pagan culture to this modern world. Very interesting. Almost Abrahamic religions erase those precious Old European culture from Europe which is very heartbreaking. Thank you once again.

Nice lyrics, beutiful in it's simplicity.
The same pattern - father, mother, brother and sister won't do something, only the dear one is ready to do this - I know from one folk song from the eastern regoin of Slovenia, but the teme is completely different. This pattern shows, that the song is raly old. Ouer song has on the end one more strophe, which is much younger is says: the dear is better then four others; then father and mother, then sisters and brothers. For my taste the added paraphrase spoils all song. So I'm glad to see, that your song reiaind unspoiled.
It would be great to have lyrics and translations of all songs in your albums.
I listened to Karo Dainos and Ugniavijas and I like boht, the second a tiny bit more.
    Make more of such albums!

@@pytis I can't agree with you. This song shows war as somthing sad, something painful. See the first twoo verses of each strophe. The horse in barn, at home, is neighing, is making satisfaied, merry voices, while brother is crying in the war. And this verses repeat through the intire song, what clearly shows it's non war liking prespective.
