I have a white 2018 Golf R. A great understated car. No one even notices you (even the police). But when you want to get going, It definitely goes. A great turbo set up for speeds under 100km/hr. (normal street speeds). Perfect as a 'sleeper' vehicle
But boring as fuck lol, I test drove the R and with all the great hot hatches in the market there's no way I could commit to something so soulless to drive. They're made for people who want to go quick but don't like the theatre a performance car brings

@@ashcosmo3854 Not really, if you want the maximum practicality possible with your performance car (as a lot of people do, especially if you can only afford to run one car) golfs and all the derivatives of them (audis, seats, skodas) are basically the only options, everything else makes compromises.
@@RWoody1995 Golf's make comprises to excitement and enjoyment though. I30N makes a Golf sound like an electric car, Civic Type R makes the Golf perform like a diesel.
If it wasn't for the interior there would be literally no reason to choose a Golf over any of the current hot hatch market.

The Golf R is a mad car. It can rival supercars with a couple of mods & it's a sleeper.
There's no reason to hate on it unless you subscribe to the "everything sucks but 90s JDM" club.
The Golf is great but can't help but love the 90's stuff. I own a 1999 Saab 9-5 though lol. Total sleeper sedan bc no one knows what it is 😂

It's fun and fast but golfs are usually so overhyped...
Revamp the suspension, dedicated track rubber, BRAKES, and a track alignment with corner balancing. That's all that 2sexy needs.
Just some good rubber would do heaps, if he gets the car gripping in corners he can take them faster and needs less brakes ;)
It needs brakes bad.
A high power FWD tuner car will only grip so much in the turns. He had good rubber and even if he had epic brakes, having good brakes and being able to take most advantage of them from a driver perspective are completely different things.
He'd have lost that race regardless, maybe done a bit better. But the take-away is that Moog did that while relaxing & talking to his Mom, and maybe if Marty threw tons more at it he could ALMOST take the Golf or maybe SLIGHTLY win, but he'd have to work hard to get it there.
There's something to be said about technology, specifically in this case the Haldex system. It just is what it is.
Take the hellcat for instance, throw some slicks on it w/ auto with that ZF8 you can run 10's all day. Want to run 10's with a standard gearbox? Gotta work for that bitch. Sometimes technology is just better in terms of performance. Even if bought not built, even if not as fun, etc.
and a DRIVER....actually all it needs is a track alingment by someone that knows what they're doing to get rid of that god aweful push, it already has sticky rubber
Do the same mods on the golf with an apr tune , +100hp easy at stage one and the golf wins all day long

@@saracen7774 completely different class of car, hot hatches didn't push 300hp until recently. Only older ones I can think of are R5 maxi turbo, Nissan pulsar gtr and Clio V6.

Look at all the old civic with turbo's, first, second, and third gears, only wheel spin no grip, banging rev limiter like there is no tommorow. When hot hatch cars, decided to go to the 300 horse power mark, they all turned into being AWD instead FWD, with a few exceptions. (Golf R, AMG A class, Audi rs3, Focus RS, Only Type Rand Renault decided to stay with fwd and more then 250 bhp....)

Señor Koquonfaes Subaru finally realized they had a trash engine in the WRX and swapped in the fa20 which is a improvement in nearly every way. Sadly the STi still has the junk ej257 (USDM models)

Also the record focus RS can do an 11.4 to the 1/4 while the golf R record is 9.5
Factor in the slightly higher weight of the focus and The fact that you can have a double clutch in the golf R

As much crap as Golfs get they are pretty decent cars. I always thought the 4 door was ugly. I owned a 2006 2 door golf and it was really fun. It went 165 mph.. So I couldn't complain.
@@JobeStroud I've had the same '01 GTi for 15 years now...broke down last summer finally and parked it, but finally getting around to fixing it now. Love me some VW (but agree, no 4 door for me).
the mini should have won tho. it still had wierd clutch issues and moog was barely using all the power. maybe because tires and brakes on the mini werent up to the task.

@@brokenacoustic I just got my Stage 2 mk4 gti back up yesterday. It was 3 months of redoing and upgrading everything. Keep at it man its so worth it. Mines a 2 door as well. The 4 doors just look odd imo. Plus who wants more heft.

Some fresh rubber, a brake upgrade, and some suspension tweaks is all that keeps this car from being the monster it deserves to be!
Yeah, this race was lost due to 1. Tires and 2. Brakes. I'm not in love with 2sexy, but the only reason the Golf is fast as a stock vehicle, is because its better setup as a whole. 2Sexy's power to weight is there, now the car just needs to be set up properly.

Colleague had a Mk5 R32. Great car, especially because (unlike the GTI) it's not only powerful, but also geared towards comfortable everyday use.
@@Vanabond Yeah I can confirm that. My brother in law had a manual Golf R and I got to drive it a few times, it was fun enough to make me want one myself. So I bought one at auction, but it was a DSG. I worked at a used car dealership at the time and the boss made me an offer on the Golf R because he knew a customer who wanted one, and it gave me the rare opportunity to profit on a car, so I parted with it after only 3 days, but in those 3 days I had such a blast in it. The launch control made the DSG more fun than the manual was, the manual just felt like any normal golf with a bit more power, it lacked any kind of special feeling.
Welp time for that AWD conversion for full EVO status.

@@Bilboswaggamuffin 4wd means the diff is locked and both sides of wheels will spin the same in a turn, not usable on any sort of pavement. AWD just sends power to all 4 wheels.

Marty needs new tires and brakes on 2sexy so much lmao what a fantastic vid
that would be a nice start but it's still a stripped out economy fwd coupe with nothing all that special suspension wise to make up for it. cars like the civic type r which are setting good track times running fwd tend to have fairly advanced front ends and special tuning to help compensate for the inherent understeer and other issues that come with doing everything with your front tires. that car is at more or less at the peak of what its capable of without converting it to awd or something else extreme and it's not really worth that kind of money
And a proper Suspension with a good setup and a smaler turbo with earlyer Boost.
@@magnetopenguino it could be a lot better with improved brakes, suspension and tyres, and probably could eat that golf for breakfast.
But youre right, overall the platform isnt any good on a track, its a $1000 commuter car with a turbo wacked on with a tune
@@GeneralNOH They did new wheels with Bridgestone RE003 tires in episode 2 of the 'unmodify your car' series, and coilover suspension in episode 3. Pretty sure they did at least a minor brake upgrade at some point in the series as well, but it was clear they could have still be bigger / better suited for the punishment. They mentioned during the unmodify series they weren't buying super high-end components because it was a budget project, but wheels/tires & suspension were already upgraded over stock. That along with stripping out the whole interior and installing the roll cage would have to bring the handling / grip way up and it still wasn't enough.
@@magnetopenguino RE003s are not really adequate enough, and they could probably go a bit bigger on the tyres. Marty has said himself that the brakes are shit and they could be upgraded.
As far as suspension goes just wacking on some coilovers isnt gonna cut it, i would assume they got cheap ones too. And suspension isnt just coilovers either, theres a lot to it
