300 Weatherby Magnum vs 1/2in Steel Plate @ 50yds

  • In this short video, I test the amount of damage the 300 Weatherby Magnum will do to a steel plate at close range. REMEMBER always be careful shooting steel at close range, especially with ridiculous calibers.
Remember and always follow the rules of gun safety:
-Keep your finger OFF the trigger until you are ready to shoot
-Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction at ALL TIMES
-Always check to see if your firearm is unloaded, do not "assume" it is unloaded
-Always wear ear and eye protection
-Make sure you know what is behind the target you are shooting at
-ALWAYS keep your firearms in a locked safe or in an area where unauthorized persons cannot access it
    - And remember, always be a responsible gun owner. Firearms are NOT toys. Set a good example for others on how to properly and safely handle firearms.
I have several years of experience with firearms handling, do not attempt this at home.

In 1975 , when just a young teen, I was moose hunting with my Dad and uncle and they both had heavy hitting rifles. My dad had a 338 Win Mag and uncle a 300 Wby in the Mk V. Both bragged their own gun superior to the other. During the hunt, we came upon a piece of 133 lb railway track that we later measured over 5/8" at the thinnest part of the web. Dad took two shots at the web at a distance of 20 yds laying behind a stone berm and put two large knots and with cracks about the size of a golf ball in the rail. My uncle shot two 180 soft points at it using a new section of the rail. Two shots and two perfectly drilled 9/16" holes clean through. I worked as a section man for the railroad a few years later and I know the toughness of rail steel to be far superior to regular cold rolled plate steel. The 300 Weatherby is an amazing cartridge. Seen it take down some pretty large animals. The cartridge is a beast and shoots flat as hell. Why it was never adopted for military use is a mystery. Maybe worried about recoil induced flinching on the user's??

Nice! I have a version of the Vanguard in 300 Wby known as the True North edition. It has bronze cerakote 24 inch barrel and action and a matte finish sporter stock. Shot a moose with it a few years ago. One shot, moose down. Biggest downfall of the Weatherby cartridges is the cost! I reload so that helps. Thanks for the video.

I shoot left-handed so I've collected the Mark 5. They are beautiful well built rifles. When I was 16 I read the Weatherby guide and it wasn't that I wanted one, I had to have one. Eventually I've had most of the calibers but the 300 is the one I hunt with the most. The 270 Weatherby is my all time favorite.

I collected weatherby guides . Must had 20 of them. Until I got married. My in-laws were weatherby fans also.
      My weatherby guides all disappeared.
One book really upset me was he'll I was there by Elmer Keith.
      Which also disappeared.
      Also in-laws mayhem.
They didn't asked to borrow they just took them.

I would have never thought it would penetrate that plate. Very impressive.

Same. I have the identical rifle and shot an AR500 plate at about 200yd. Hornady 178 ELD-X did not penetrate like that lol. Partition is probably better for the job.

I stupidly traded my Mk V in .300 WBY a year ago. I regretted it so much that I bought a limited edition Vanguard Ibex 3 stainless steel in .300 WBY.

As a past owner of 8 rifles in 300 Wby mag rifles in different brands and currently own 2 rifles in 300 Wby mag rifles my tip is never use 2-piece scope mounts bases use only a one-piece picatinny rail mount base because these 300 Wby mag recoil is so sever it causes the 2-piece base mounts to shift or break the screws.
The recoil of many 300 Wby mag rifles can be swift back at you with some very heavy force.

LOVE 300 WBY!!! I've shot targets out to 1000yds with 300 Wby 180 SMK, and killed deer and elk with 180GR Barnes TSX, current load is a 168gr TTSX @3375 FPS

Good to see a hunter and reloader not brainwashed into the fad of shooting garbage lead bomb bullets in a rifle of extreme energy.
I am exclusively shooting all of the Barn's bullets from all my rifles when game animals are hunted and lead bullets for paper targets.

Vanguard and Mk V lazerguards are in "legacy models" on weatherby website, so any leftover new rifles are just old stock.

  • @lurebenson7722
    @lurebenson7722 Před 7 měsíci

That rifle is made by Howa for Weatherby so it's not actually a Weatherby, but they do shoot fantastic.
I am a Weatherby mark 5 and a Mauser 98 owner both are in 300 Weatherby magnum so they aren't just for long range or bigger game.
For the 300 Wby mag you match the bullet to the game hunted and never used any brand of lead core bullets or these turn to lead bombs so only use the Barns TSX - TTSX - LRX bullets

I would like to have a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in 7mm Weatherby Mag myself but I have admit the 300 Weatherby Mag is badass too. Even the Weatherby Mark V Weathermarks are cool looking guns for having fiberglass stocks on them. I'll admit I do prefer wood stocks on my guns oh by the way nice looking Weatherby Vanguard you got there. Last but not least the Weatherby Mark V's are made in Sheridan Wyoming which I think is pretty cool.

i got the 7mm…mine was built in 1971 in California…on top of that is a Redfield Wideview Accutrac in 3x9 also from 71….taken grizzly moose and elk in Alaska..all one shot kills…except for one moose that needed a second…it’s all about shot placement…people have asked me why not update the scope….but it’s one of the best scopes ever made and like the rifle it’s a classic and i would never find another one…both in mint condition…both to be left to my grandson

      @craigleibbrand7761 Před rokem

The 7mm Weatherby Magnum is Roy's best all around caliber. Adequate bullet weight, good velocity, enough energy and not the recoil and muzzle blast of the 300.

my dad died yesterday , and i have this gun, the exact same one, minus the scope, i'm in a country i can not keep it, how much do you think this is worth , selling it in legal ways, in europe?
i want to have an idea, cause this is clearly not a regular rifle, never fired it , was taught how to use is at 5 and clearly told how devastating this was, never touched it for 30 years, i dont want to be robbed selling it for nothing cause idk what it's worth.

Just keep your mouth shut you now own it then keep it because it was your father's rifle.
Never give up your guns and never tell anyone you own guns is a safe rule to remember.
Hide the rifle in the homes addict or under the flood or you know as a kid small place in the home to hide things just don't sell it or give it up!
If the law comes looking for the gun because your father had to register it just tell the cops you lost it in a boating - raft - canoeing accident and go look for it in a river or lake then say no more, they have to prove you wrong.
I am an American who lived in Romania, so I knew just how to stand up to those corrupted Romanian cops.
Remember with the law - cops the more you say the worst you can make trouble for yourself, so silence is the rule.
The value can't be judged until it is examined and to be the rifle seen in the video was made by Howa in Japan for Weatherby, so it is a less valued rifle than the Weatherby Mark 5 .
The person who said $1500 is full if BS .
