Ok Doug, you have an international audience. When you talk the market you mean the US auto market. Volvo station wagons are NOT weird in Europe. The US SUV's are not popular in Europe because of steep taxes (based on weight) and are sometimes difficult to navigate and park on European streets. So for Volvo, VW, etc. to have production lines for station wagons and sedans is not weird at all. They are just not aimed at the US market. Just spilling some of them to a few customers in the US may make sense to them.

Came to say the same thing. Wagon's are literally the opposite of dead in EU. Sedans and coupes are pretty rare out here while hatchbacks and wagons are everywhere. A lot I think does come from taxes and regulations. I for one don't even have the option to get a sedan or coupe as a company car, it must be a 5 door wagon/hatch/SUV and I think that's pretty common. That said, it's much more practical. Especially considering how many people cycle in Europe; I like being able to fit a bike or 2 easily in the car. Not possible in a coupe or 4-door.

@@3mp69 It is VERY different in the US, which is where Doug's perspective on this is coming from. Those cars simply are not seen here, basically ever, so yes it is indeed weird to see one in the wild. Here the Ford F150, Chevy Silverado, and various SUVs account for, at a guess, probably 85% of the entire (new) market. Another 12% or so will be your standard sedans, with the rest being the few coupes they still make, like the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette.
I saw a Volvo wagon a couple of years ago, when I was car shopping. It was on a Volvo dealer's lot. I was honestly amazed, since the last time I'd seen one was back in the 90s. It's a really pretty car and I had to talk myself out of getting it, sadly, since it wasn't what I needed at the time. They're so rare here because there's simply too small a fan base for them, everyone wants a truck or standard SUV.

You know, it occurred to me while watching this that the Avalon TRD doesn't make sense in the U.S (or even the euro market) but it absolutely makes sense for japan. In japan people put race wheels on kei trucks, bodykits on their crossovers, etc. I think we lose track of what car culture really is in japan because of how big the drift scene is, but if you go on google maps, you're way more likely to come across a lowered kei van with aftermarket wheels and a crazy racing bumpercover and rear spoiler, than you are a drift car.
The Avalon TRD fits in nicely with that culture of "I want my car to be cool and personalized but I don't really care if it's fast, I'm not racing it". I'd be willing to bet money that that car was designed with solely japan in mind, and just happened to end up going to other markets too.

Except that nearly every iconic SUV started as a 2 door, and the 2 door versions are all much more desirable (and valuable) than the eventual 4 door. The OBS Chevy 2 door Blazers, the "O.J" Bronco's, 2 door Jeep Cherokee's ... just to name a few. The same goes for the "failed" Subaru Baja. You can buy a 2nd Gen outback for $1500 ... but a roached out Baja is still $7k.
The "problem" with 2 door vehicles is that manufacturers got lazy, and they don't want to make 2 body styles ... so they default to 4 doors.

So they only focus on the most popular segments to get the most money. That's why a lot of the subcompact cars are dying out and being replaced with boring crossovers. To us, these "normal" cars are weird because they're becoming increasingly rare, unfortunately.

I agree that the editing in this one was definitely a bit too forced and cheesy. Though Volvo always maintained that the non-CC V90 was special order only, a Jalopnik article a few years back alerted me to the fact that there were in fact some V90s that were making it East Coast dealerships and sitting on lots. A found a few on Autotrader, bought a V90 T5 Inscription through my local dealership in the Midwest, and haven't looked back (except to marvel how good it looks when parked).
I'm no hardcore Volvo wagon fanatic. I just wanted a special, beautiful car with presence, a fantastic interior, plenty of space, and efficiency that a SUV cannot match. Did I mention it's a beautiful car? This model looks long, low, and stunningly handsome without being jacked up an inch or two and the tacked-on plastic of the Cross Country. People that don't know what it is remark that it's a great-looking vehicle, and once a month, someone who knows EXACTLY what it is (a Doug Demuro subscriber maybe) will excitedly approach and ask how I got it.

Lots of manufacturers will make you a car with the steering wheel on the other side to what is normal in their country, of course as long as they make both a RHD and LHD version. For example 20y+ ago I used to be able to order in Germany a RHD a SLK or Boxster, I would pick them up from the factories in Stuttgart and drive them back to the UK when I was going home for a holiday, then I'd sell them for a profit in the UK. The small Merc AMGs sell a lot as they finally enable more people to afford an AMG, and what you call previous version is the A not a GLA, it is damn popular here in South Africa.
