I hate when people reduce her to other divas just because she’s not in the US industry and is not as huge. She’s not a second Céline or Barbra or whatever…no matter how good they are, it’s so reductive. As you said she’s unique. This woman is the best selling female belgian artist of all time, one of the best vocalists and storytellers ever who inspired many artists, is a multilingual songwriter, composer, musician, extremely musically educated…she’s her own person and one of the most talented people the industry has ever known. You should react to Je suis malade or Caruso.

Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees.
Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
• she speaks 4 languages fluently (french, italian, english, spanish) and has sung in 12 languages in total
• she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks. She often co-composes the music with the composer.
• she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
• she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia). She was raised in both countries so she speaks both french and italian as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today.
She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada. She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship
She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert.
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar thru her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace" used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera topped the charts for months.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
He covered many of her songs (that she performed originally ; she also wrote some of these).
Out of my mind I can list:

She also wrote the lyrics of his song « Your Love ».
And she covered « Love is like a dream » before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva)
They also performed Ti Amo Cosi together with Aida Garafulina. This is a song that she performed originally with Dmitriy Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy who came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him.

Adagio is an italian word, that means "Slowly".
This is also used in music to define the pace of a music (a bit slow, between lento and andante) and also as a name of a piece of a sonate, concerto or symphony that is using that specific pace.
The music from this song of Lara is a pop translation of an italian classic piece called "Albinoni's Adagio". It was written in 1958 by Remo Giazotto who was an admirer of Albinoni, a musician from the 17th/18th century. He claimed it was from Albinoni and give his music this name but there is consensus today that he most probably has composed it himself.
The classic music piece is globally famous and was translated into a pop song for Lara. She wrote lyrics in english and italian for it and is the original performer.
She kept the title Adagio and wrote a story with a double meaning: a woman that is awaiting to find her love / an artist that is awaiting the god of inspiration.
This song has become a classic and has been covered by many : Shirley Bassey (!!), Dimash, Floor Jansen, Polina Gagarina, Giulia Falcone, …
They made great covers but none of these match the storytelling amazing performance of Lara in this concert From Lara with Love.
Her italian version is also amazing.
my understanding of Adagio is that it means the music piece that is the achievement of a lifetime for a composer. So the lover of her life that she is reaching for is named Adagio.
When Lara sings she totally immerses herself in the emotions of the song. Listen to her sing Je Suis Malade. It is the most powerful performance that I have ever seen!

She has been cited as "a" or "the" key influence to most of the young killer singers on the world stage. Yes she is no one else than herself. Good point. She has a totally different timbre in her voice and the fact that she can sing high pitched notes doesn't make her a Celine or Mariah copy. Tomaso Albinoni wrote the melody that this is built on. So beautiful. Good reaction and you should for sure listen to more of her!

So although 12 years ago was a good guess, this is from about 22 years ago instead. Lara is living
in Canada with her husband and daughter and is planning a concert tour starting this summer. One

This particular performance, in fact, is almost a quarter century old.
With respect to drawing comparisons between Fabian and others, if one is to 'go there', then the name Barbara Streisand would certainly warrant a place among the mix; well before any mention of Mariah Carey be made - that's for sure or even Whitney Houston for that matter.
Those 3 names, Mariah, Celine, and Whitney are referred to as the vocal trinity to many. That's why those 3 singers were named. In my opinion Lara Fabian Trumps them all!

Yes this is Albinoni’s Adagio and she wrote lyrics on it in english and italian.
It has been covered later by many great artists (Dimash, Floor Jansen, Polina Gagarina, Giulia Falcone, … and Shirley Bassey !) but none match Lara’s storytelling.
This song has 2 meaning : woman awaiting for her love / artist awaiting the hod of inspiration. I will post a separate comment about it and another one to detail Lara’s background, career and the great influence she has on the new generation of vocalists (she is Dimash’s absolute idol and a great influence to Diana Ankudinova for instance).

She’s the best live female singer I have heard with perhaps the exception being Whitney Houston. But in terms of vocal ability, agility, power and combining that with her storytelling, no one touches her! Not Mariah, Not Celine, No one!
Bonjour Amin, thank you for this very sweet reaction to Lara Fabian. As she is also a song writer, she put words on Albinoni's Adagio. She also sings it in Italian. Check it. She did not pursue a career in the USA but she is a real star in Europe and Canada. She sings in French, Italian, Spanish and English. She resides now in Montréal wher she is fully adopted with love. She is now over 50 years old. I suggest you watch very recent performances from her.
