This week on Sunday Longplay, it's another ROM hack for one of my favorite NES games of all time in honor of its franchise's 35th anniversary. Welcome to Zelda 2: The Nightmare of Ganon!
Though it doesn't sport new graphics like other hacks like The Triforce of Courage or Winter Solstice did, The Nightmare of Ganon does provide a fresh new challenge to Zelda 2 fans, with its more precarious platforming, deeper palaces, longer caves, and new twists on its boss fights! However, it does implement a couple changes to balance it out, including having every enemy respawn after leaving the screen allowing for easier XP farming, and allowing you to restart at the entrance of a palace if you Game Over in there.
It's a brand-new Zelda 2 experience tailor-made for people who have played Zelda 2 to death and need a new challenge, while at the same time staying out of Kaizo territory. This is another hack that is definitely worth checking out!

Remember that whenever you see a Stalfos, just simply stab it’s Legs with your Sword since the Stalfos doesn’t lower it’s Shield.
All those scary jumps give me flashbacks to when I first played this game lol

This looks like the hardest Zelda 2 hack I’ve seen you play. Btw, thanks for doing these streams. I am so much better at Zelda 2 after watching your play throughs. I was able to beat the game once when I was a kid ( when it came out ) but now I’m working on doing no death runs ( not particularly successfully mind you, but I’m getting better ) . Your decision making on when to pick up magic containers vs not at strategies for dealing w enemies has been the most helpful for sure

Damn it took 84 hits to burst that Bubble.
Killed shadow link with 1/3 life and no deaths. I like how these rom hacks take away the ability to just crouch with your back to the edge of the screen and cheese kill shadow link . The final boss should be a challenge

No joke though, this hack looks extremely difficult and I thought that Triforce of Courage was pretty generous with it's use of Diara in early game areas. At least in this, potions seem to drop way more often. If only you had the life spell to help you through Death Mountain though. That just looked absurdly difficult.

It’s definitely one of the hardest hacks I’ve played so far, but it still never felt unfair.

Remember that it’s oftentimes difficult to take out the Scorpion-Like Enemies since they shoot Fireballs from their Tails & you can only hurt them when their Eyes are open.
Yeah, I usually try to skip them where possible. Probably the second-hardest enemy to kill aside from the bird knights in the Great Palace.
@@MetalSmasherGaming Also if 1 of those Scorpion-Like Enemies is nearby, you might hear Fireball Sounds even if the Scorpion-Like Enemy is offscreen.

Hardtypes I can handle, but Kaizo hacks on the other hand...no way!
For some reason the game crashes when I walk into the first palace. Anybody know how to fix it? I'm using Mesen
Edit: Fixed it. If anybody else has the same problem, I patched the rom with an online patching tool instead of using Mesen's built in one, and it works now.

I stopped playing this Hack, 'cause after a lot of effort, I got softlocked at the Red Palace, which was already "sealed" for me.

so far this is my least favorite one of these I have played. Its hard only because the use of the most annoying enemies in every screen.
