This week on Sunday Longplay, it's another ROM hack for one of my favorite NES games of all time in honor of its franchise's 35th anniversary. Welcome to Zelda 2: Winter Solstice!
The memory of Ganon fades. But, on the longest, darkest day, the Winter Solstice, he is able to once more take physical form and cover the land in terror and anguish. Our hero must destroy the darkness, save Zelda, and seal off evil with the help of the Triforce in another adventuresome quest.
This hack creates a brand-new overworld for the land of Hyrule as well as new overworld battle scenes, new winter-themed environments, new palaces, bigger areas, new dialogue, a new HUD (not the same one from Zelda 2 Redux, but this one looks nice too!), and even new music themes for the endgame (Great Palace, Dark Link, and Ending).

"With this you can get very high."
Wasn't expecting a jump spell...
Insert Snoop Dogg joke here.
I was talking to a wizard, getting some magic... But then I got high
@@josephforjoseph weed is a hell of a drug.
@@josephforjoseph I was gonna save the princess too... But then I got high
When I See the First boss:
"Oh, looks like they glitched Mazura and Rebonack together, weird."
**realizes it's not a glitch, but by design**
"Oh...that's EVIL!"
This is a very impressive hack. What I like most about it is the revamped UI, as it not only looks better but is also a lot easier to read. Additions like Reflect changing Link's color palette and the hooded cloak thing are also really cool.
is it hard?
@@rGGdomthat's what your mom says
@@alexanderwesner9980 well to be fair all moms say that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was fantastic. I’ve always thought Zelda 2 was a beautiful game, and this did it justice.
Yeah, of all the Zelda 2 hacks I've played, this one is probably my favorite.
Resurrection of Gannon was pretty good.
Yeah.
GTM604 did a really amazing job with the look and feel of this hack. It genuinely has entirely it's own vibe. My favorite change is the new Great Palace theme. It feels far more epic and a bit tragic as well.
I love watching these. Part 2 is my favorite game of all time. I still got an original nes that works. Still use it today. These home made games look awesome, but look very difficult
There are a lot of ROM hacks that were made with people who have played the base game to death in mind, and serve to give them a fresh new challenge. Some go completely overboard (Kaizo Mario World being the most famous example), but I like my hacks to not reach that level while still being more challenging than the base game.
I was on the toilet for this entire video. Great stuff
That must have been a hard one to push out lol
Did you Free Willy?
This is some of the most TMI I've ever stumbled upon on ye Olde CZcams
You just fucking gave birth for real, bro
How did you manage for almost 4 hours???
This was such an amazing hack, loved every bit of it! Also, very well played for something that looked to be a little more challenging than your typical vanilla Zelda 2 gameplay. Great job and also a huge shoutout to the developers for making an outstanding hack! 👏🏻🔥
It's definitely in my top 5, maybe even top 3!
Great game with steep learning curve but looks fun. I will defiantly be playing this Zelda 2 hack.
Amazing, my friend kept telling me to try this and I'm having fun despite the difficulty. I'm trying to do things myself but when I get super lost I've been coming to this video to see what I actually need to do.
It's a very well-made hack for sure. I think it's good that this hack was made to be harder than the base game to give people who have played the base game to death a fresh new challenge, and it's great that it didn't go completely overboard into Kaizo territory with it because at that point it just becomes unfair and not fun.
@@MetalSmasherGaming:
"With this, you can get very high"
I *Know* it's the Jump magic, but: Could they have worded that clue *ANY* more suggestively towards getting high on freaking drugs?!?!?
@@JadenMoon1475 Lol, I think that was intentional. Nice little bit of humor there.
I am loving this rom hack of the original game. Great job! =D
It’s definitely one of my favorites!
Gonna try this hack out for myself. Thanks for playing it!
No prob! I loved this hack so it was my pleasure.
This rom hack is cool. I'm entertained by it.
Yes! I can play this one on mac! I'm extremely excited, this looks great!
One of my favorite Zelda 2 hacks for sure!
@@MetalSmasherGaming It's really great, although I'm finding it quite difficult. Man, you're good at Zelda II! You make it look easy.
there's Amida's Curse
This game should be called "Zelda II: Cave Quest". I think about 80% of this video is you in caves lol
But seriously, it's an impressive hack. I love all the "quality-of-life" upgrades that were done. Even the dungeon gimmicks are a bit more interesting with all the secret, breakable walls.
One of the best for sure!
Love this videos
Great Palace theme is quite nice!
It's good, but I really like the new Dark Link theme too!
@@MetalSmasherGaming That theme is nice too indeed!
yo this rom hack is sick
One of my favorites for sure!
Jawdropped + knockout + blown away I MUST play this.
Also, Nintendo you should do this and remake/continue Zelda 2 dark timeline and go om with some of this excellent and classic gameplay.
This was a really cool rom hack. Very impressive you didn't die once with some very difficult obstacles.
What were the sea shells for? Did you need them to get any of the items?
Also, how would you compare this to Shadow of Night hack?
3:24:04: Ice Dungeon Stage
1:58
this nice man is literally dancing to celebrate links success and getting a potion to assist in his adventure yet in cold blood link turns around and murders the harmless citizen... that's a war crime.
Even with a couple new sprites, he still smacks his head on his shield at every step.
That said, definitely want to check this one out.
Probably the best Zelda 2 hack I've played so far!
Tell me you edited that walkthrough. I just beat that game and I died 94 times. Last level took me an entire day to beat.
The healing lady should have said, "wanna have some fun?" And then "you do practice it I notice"
Haha, that would be perfect for a spoof hack!
2:22:22 *That key drop*
Joke aside, the hack looks really good, getting the spells via picking an item was something unique that I thought was outside the limits of the game's engine.
On the bad side, there are some things like that awful key drop in the Hidden/Sand Palace, the lack of the Candle during most of the game (Though it's not that bad since you can pretty much see all the enemies in the caevs anyway) and the not-so intuitive hidden paths in the palaces.
Yeah, that key drop is pure evil! But I still consider this one of the best Zelda 2 hacks I’ve played. It’s definitely harder than the original Zelda 2, but at no point does it feel unfair.
@@MetalSmasherGaming The only thing I would change would be that key drop, the rest of the game looks very good.
Despite my claim about the "not-intuitive" paths, it's not like the original game had a lot of those hidden zones anyway, I remember getting stuck for weeks until I stumbled into Bagu's house in my first times playing the original game several years ago.
What is the song in the winter palace... Ice dungeon stage ?
3:51:09: Victory!
I just finished up to 14:30 but you shouldn't have denied that upgrade before the placement of that triforce part. You get the next upgrade points and thus would have gotten 800.
The same happened with 7300 out of 8000 points right before the end of another palace. :)
3:24:03 the unique music begins
Did that wizard just give link some dank weed?
3:50:05: Final Boss
Why do these Zelda hacks/randomizers _never_ get old?
Because the possibilities are pretty much endless!
how do you get the up thrust in this? I can't seem to go down that chimney at 2:35:15
I didn't think people would actually make Zelda 2 Rom Hacks because of how the game was made, I'm really suprised.
Between this and Amida’s Curse especially, people have done amazing things with this game! Someone even made a recreation of Ocarina of Time in Zelda 2 style, which is also amazing!
The sword hilt is crooked.
👍👍
Glass Cannon is mandatory in any Zelda II game, including rom hacks
Great gameplay and hack!
One of the best Zelda 2 hacks in my book!
I started playing this hack a few days ago but for some reason the key at @36:08 is missing so cant proceed, any ideas what is going on?
1:56:58: Boss Battle
Can I just download from the link and play? I am new to this.
The download link is only for the patch file. You need to apply it to a Zelda 2 ROM (which I cannot legally provide). There are many tools available to do this, but the one I use is the online patching tool on the website where you download the patch.
Not sure if Zelda is Worth all this trouble. Man that was a tough journey.
2:02:17-2:02:18: Stage Clear
3:52:00: End Credits
8:51:18: Ending
3:54:10: Game Over
Why did the music cut off @2:59:44?
I’m honestly not sure myself.
What do you think? Does this beat out the PC Remake?
I dont know if it's part of the game but all of a sudden after forest temple my magic bar is stuck. I cant get my magic restored and have to play with only one magic bar filled... :/
This is the first I've heard of this problem, so I don't know what to tell you.
@@MetalSmasherGaming well...i think i figured it out. i forgot to patch the original rom. i just opened winter solstice ibs with an emulator and then opened original rom with it. i saw that originally in this romhack you start with 3 stack lifebar and 1 stack magic bar. but in my case i got 4 on both of them. and when i got fifth magic container and noticed that i have 9 stack magic bar... "magic" happened :D
How can play this and your other hacks?
What are the sea shells for?
They're for a collection quest.
Extra life, they're like mini links in the original.
I thought this was a random reference to Demolition Man
Why do all of these rom hacks almost always start with 1 magic bar??
Why does the player not just leave towns from the left side? It's closer than walking back to the right side through 2 screens
It's a shame they just had dark link as the final boss. Overall a very cool romhack though, looks reasonable in difficulty unlike most romhacks.
Yeah, I like ROM hacks that are harder than the base game so as to provide a fresh challenge for people who have played the base game to death, but not like stupidly hard Kaizo-style ROM hacks.
Interesting different look, but too much grinding travel between castles.
where can I get it??!!
There’s a download link in the description. Follow the link to download the patch file, then use the online patching tool on the same website to apply it to a Zelda 2 ROM, and the patched ROM will automatically download once finished.
I don't understand the logic of his hood. In a town, but outside of the houses, it isn't heated, but Link's hood is down and the townspeople are dressed like it's summer. Link should only take his hood off in their houses.
In the first palace, it's clearly all covered in ice so it's frozen, but Link's hood is off.
I don’t remember any of this… wtf! All i know was legend of Zelda and the adventures of link. When the hell did this come out
It was released two years ago as a ROM hack mod for The Adventure of Link. There’s a link to it in the description.
HERMOSO. 2021.
some should mod for this game that adds raytracing
5:02 Phteven
Good game,but is Very Hard
It’s hard, but it’s fair. And I like it!
can't get the candle, need the POWER of 7, anybody what is that????/

Bro someone needs to reteach you how to fight iron knuckles. You cannot be afraid of them you legit get two hits in and run. You can bully tf out of them stop being afraid!!!!!!

Flying first boss is stupid. Im out.
Horsehead walking on air isn't even the bad part. The bad part is the blue Ironknuckle with him.
sony fanboy... 👎😑
Too much dungeon-walking here. Gets boring. And the colors of these "alternative Zelda 2:s" are gloomy.
