- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2D (OoT 2D) is a A Link to the Past inspired 2D reimagining of the critically acclaimed classic from the Nintendo 64 era. Like many other Zelda fans, we have seen countless attempts at this idea come and go for over a decade now. Ocarina of Time 2D is a game that has been attempted to be developed several times by different fan developers. It is unfortunate that they never got completed, since it is really interesting how they translate the 3D world into 2D, somewhat like making a painting of a sculpture.

For those wondering, this project has been abandoned but the team. The creator and another developer are working on an extremely similar project, still Ocarina 2D but on their own engine instead of the A Link to the past engine. The new project is titled: Ocarina of Time 2d Final.
Do you have a link to info on this game??? Sounds amazing, thanks for the comment

Nice
In an alternate universe where OoT was released on SNES and ALttP was released on N64...
the fanbase would’ve been better for it >_>
Ironically, OoT was meant to be a 3D remakes of LttP early on in production.
@@AdamTheFanatic Well It kind of did to an extent. The three spiritual stones in oot are like the three pendants in alttp and getting them will get the master sword. Then both have the quest to awaken the sages. The differences in terms of plot were the wizard in lttp and ganondorf in oot and that lttp has the dark world whereas oot stays in hyrule.
Now I want to see a 3D ALTTP lol
It would be exactly the same lol. OOT is an obvious 3D translation of alttp
It's like a memory I never knew existed.

Violence Is the Only Answer Now.
I'm 33 years old and I remember as a kid scouring forums for hours for updates and progress multiple times a day. Back then the project was headed by "TRM" or TheRealMethuselah. I refuse to believe anyone will ever create a full 2D rendition.
It looked great until it became just a huge meme.
That was out of fuckin nowhere. Here I am all nostalgic and suddenly Link's getting shot at by machine guns, like what the fuck? Hold the memes and give me a proper Ocarina demake.
It was a great idea from the author.
He turned the game into a parody, avoiding legal problems with Nintendo! Genius!
@ its not actually that "genius" at all, people seem to have this misguided belief that trademark and copyright infringement laws magically don't exist whatsoever the minute you add a joke. it doesn't work like that. you can satirize something only to the point where the use of any copyrighted/trademarked material is *completely necessary* in order to make transformative commentary about the material itself, as an extension of free speech. and even that isn't some unilateral right, it's a potential defense. -- but just adding a dumb joke or meme, that has nothing to do with the material itself is not satirizing anything. adding a machine gun to be RaNdOm!! is not transformative of any asset used in the game, it's not a function of speech, and it doesn't just give you the right to use any trademark or copyrighted music, character design, sprites, audio sample, written story/dialogue, etc that you want.
almost every commercial "parody" artist you know licenses the things they use. but I doubt that's that this developer was even attempting anyways. it's unfortunate, really. I respect artistry and their creative freedom, but it's also just exploitative and disrespectful to the art that it's piggybacking from. (especially when much of this material is just straight-up lifted work from other people's OOT2D projects)
the description of this video is ironic, because that stuff is exactly what made this project a failure, just like every other failed project the description was referring to.
@@RyanMan767 There need to be a certain amount of changes to make it okay, and even then, you cannot make money from it.
If Nintendo could prove that this game was taking sales or slandering their name, then they have a case, otherwise it’s legal. (If they change that certain amount.)
HOWEVER, 9 out of 10 times none of that matters. Nintendo can still shut you down because most fan games vs Nintendo cases are just one man vs a team of lawyers. Why bother fighting back? That’s like a newborn baby fighting Thanos. Good luck.
@@DiddyKongVsLuigi closer, but that's still false. you simply cannot use intellectual property or trademarks without authorization, period. (excluding for purposes of fair use, which includes use as a function/extension of speech, criticism, education, etc). and whether it makes money is irrelevant in either case.
What you're likely confusing here is *Copyright* law and intellectual property. Copyright law is regarding how you can't actually copy/republish an *already existing* work as a whole. Intellectual Property and Trademark law is different. so yes, in that context, you can publish *copyrighted* material to an extent, like a song, film, game, photo, etc as long as you make it a new transformative work. (with lots of conditions)
But something like this doesn't concern *copyright* law. (other than maybe the use of Zelda music). this is restricted by Trademarks and IP, so that would regard the use of Nintendo character names and likenesses, story elements, logos, areas, etc. all of which cannot be used, regardless how many guns you add on top of them to make it a so-called "parody", and even if the work as a whole is original.
I'm not even mad about the memes because of how cool the rest of it is. They homebrewed a day/night cycle into ALTTP, added in a 2D aiming system, put a visual timer on the sticks, *added platforming*, and stayed true to basically every cutscene. I really hope this ends up getting finished even though I know it's unlikely.
Oh, not to mention the goddamn MUSIC, which somehow stays true to both ALTTP and OOT at the same time!
This was taken down over 6 years ago
@@FahrenheitTepes I am sad
@@AsherAries Very, very true
As someone who has been around fangames for a while, rest assured none of this was "brought into" ALTTP, it was done in something like Game Maker and you'd be surprised to find how easy most of this stuff is to create and implement. The real challenge is making all of this work well together without feeling clunky, which is a tall order... I hope that whoever made this put their skills and enthusiasm into a smaller project.
:/.. it went from a hoax to a joke in a matter of about 15 years
@Nathan Hannon long story.....But like I said...started out a hoax, got people riled up, some one started out making it, project traded hands, never got completed, turned into a parody almost over the course of several years. I'm sure you can find a video about it.

@@AsherAries but Smash is already 2D?
@@stpidstuff It still runs in a 3D engine with 3D visuals. You just see it from a "2D" perspective.
@@setherly9137 oh yeah it is
That's called 2.5d though isn't it?
@@stpidstuff Yeah, but 2.5D for the most part just vaguely means a 3D game in the style of a 2D one. Though there are a lot of 2.5D games that are primarily 2D with 3D elements (Smash not being one of them).
2.5D is anything that is 2D but looks "3D" like pokemon of this game. Anything isometric, too. Anything 2D not strictly in a top-down view or side-view (like super mario).

Wow... I can’t believe someone actually finally created at least a portion of an OOT2D game.
I followed this project for years... When it TheRealMethuselah? Or whatever his name was has released screenshots, let the hype train out of the station and then suddenly disappeared. I would check the internet for any new OOT2D projects making any progress.
I remember at one point playing some sort of OOT2D alpha game engine test build that was released, but it only had a few minutes of content. But for as long as I kept up at least, that project suffered the same fate as all the others before it.
After so many years wondering about OOT2D and if it anyone could ever really make it a reality, I guess I just gave up thinking it could ever possibly happen.
