Korekiyo is kinda a sad character. In the beginning it may seem like his motive is another purely selfish one like the other case 3 killers but given some more thought and hindsight you can see that it’s much darker then “must kill people for dead incest lover” unlike Celeste and Mikan who both know what they are doing is purely selfish and out of a sick sense of greed/lust, Korekiyo does his crime out of a passion for someone he truly believes cares for him and a deep sense in the beauty of humanity and it’s nature. I often wish to see what should have happened if Korekiyo lived all the way to chap6 and have his soul completely crushed by the realization that his sister never existed and he basically killed Tenko/Angie for no good reason. It would probably be the most impactful despair a survivor had felt. Imagine carrying the guilt of at least 80+ murders for a ghost woman who traumatized you only to then be shown it was all a lie, BUT you really did kill one innocent person except now you have nothing to point to as a reason for her death.

TW: Abuse. I’ve always really liked Korekiyo, I love his design and his talent, I was enraptured from the moment he was introduced. But after the 3rd chapter, and finding out he was abused by his terminally ill sister, he went from being a character I simply liked, to a character I heavily related to, and my love for him only grew from there. My mother is terminally ill, and she’s incredibly manipulative and abusive, she constantly uses her illness against me, to guilt me, or get her to do things for her, or keep me away from my friends, or even school, and whenever I try to talk to her about this, she yells at me and tells me that she’ll be dead soon, and that I’m going to regret talking to her like that, that I’m going to regret not appreciating her. Up until recently, I thought these behaviours were normal, and okay, and that she was fully justified in treating me the way she did, because when you’ve been around something for SO LONG, you grow to believe it’s normal, and that you’re somehow in the wrong for wishing to oppose it, so you accept it. It’s also extremely hard to talk about issues like this, because of the fact that they ARE terminally ill, people have a natural inclination to feel empathetic towards these individuals, and when you try to talk about it, people tell you to cut them some slack, or that they can’t be that bad. It wasn’t until my friends pointed out how horrible she was that I even knew, I would tell them the things she would say and do and I would think that it was okay, or that they’d find it relatable, because “haha all parents must be like this!” It’s tragic, and things like this do happen, and it’s honestly amazing to have a character who displays this obscure form of abuse, a reverse power imbalance, they’re using the fact that they ARE PHYSICALLY WEAKER to overpower you, and that’s rarely talked about, and it’s unfortunate that everyone only sees him as “lmao, incest is wincest lollll sister fucker” Sorry for how long this is, and that it’s somewhat off-topic, i simply thought that I could provide some insight, as someone who’s been through a similar situation, although obviously not to the same extent.
I feel like Kiyo’s one of those characters you either like instantly or you grow to at least coexist with but that’s just my experience with the danganronpa community
I liked him instantly and always did. Although I was weirded out in the trial at first, I tried to research his character (I only know the basics still and I would love to study his character more) and I understood what it was. I felt so bad.
I thought he was a girl and my dumbass went crazy for his design but then found out he was a guy (I headcanon him as non-binary) and still loved him lol, we both share interests about cultures and etc and I don’t know why but I really love his character(besides the sister thing obviously)
Great breakdown, but Celeste in the english dub of ch3 is unbeatable for me, the way she desperately tries to cling to her accent but fails and absolutely snaps in the end
Writing-wise defiantly, but Celestia's VA does such a good job switching from her fake French accent and her real accent, that it really takes the cake for me. Maybe if I played the games in Japanese, or no voice acting at all, I'd have a different opinion.
It's a shame people were forcing you to like him, it can really ruin the character. I do like him, but I can agree that the reveal and how it was done didn't do any good for him, and a lot of people stopped liking him. It's easy to not see him as the victim of his sister. Also, can the DR fandom drop the "Sweet home Alabama" jokes? They are never funny.
The character arc you've gone through reevaluating Kiyo is one of the prime V3 experience in my opinion. The arc the player goes through, initially (usually) enjoying the character, to suddenly hating him due to the reveal, but then consciously choosing to break down his character to the point of recognizing his backstory and his motivations is really impressive. The player doesn't have to like him after analyzing him, of course, but understanding him makes the player feel differently when going through the trial again, from abrupt disgust to a melancholic hopelessness for example. It's personally a brilliant example of a character that danganronpa could write, and it almost makes you wonder what went wrong with a certain... checkered, small, child from the same game. (Honestly if they played up Kiyo's curiosity he would have made a brilliant mastermind, or at least fill the antagonist role, with a mix of "I wanted this killing game to happen so you all can do the dirty work of sending friends to my sister for me" and "I was so interested in seeing how each and every one of you would react to this game that there was no way to pass it up!". It wouldn't fit the theme as well, but I think it would'a been pretty neat.
@@Pixelat1on SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRETY OF V3. in that case, I feel like the theme of truth vs lies would have to be completely reworked. Or, what I was thinking last night, maybe have it so both Tsumugi and Kokichk die in the first trial. The ultimate liar kills the mastermind thinking that she was the mastermind, only for the game to continue, and then the despair kokichi would feel after being wrong about his choice, as the game would have just continued if Tsumugi had died early,, only to be executed. It's in a similar vein to what legitimately happened in case 1, but we would get the added benefit of Kaede being the protagonist, and how the chapters would shift from that point onwards, giving different characters the spotlight. But this makes me want to look back on the game and try to rework what the death order would be if both the mastermind and original antagonist die first.

as a korekiyo fan and someone who was abused by their older sibling (thankfully not to the same extent as kiyo) it makes me feel sick to see people call korekiyo hates abuse apologists. chapter 3 made a lot of people feel uncomfortable about kiyo's character so it's completely understandable to dislike him. in fact you don't even need a specific reason to dislike a character and it's sad that fandoms will treat hating a character like you've just committed a heinous crime.
yes kiyo is a big comfort character and kin for me but you are 100% allowed to dislike a character just because they have a tragic backstory doesnt mean you HAVE to like them. as long as your not doing something like joking about their trauma or being insensitive, you can dislike characters.

I’ve always enjoyed the basics of Kiyos character because of how much he establishes himself as an “observer,” sort of reminding me of Nagitos shenanigans in terms of “what beauty can I witness here?” but much more tolerable because Kiyo has a much more interesting and less annoying personality.
While I’m not a massive Kiyo stan, I still really enjoy this character. I originally only took interest in him because I had a strong interest in anthropology, but I slowly came to really appreciate his character. His motive threw me off at first but seeing as I’d done all/the majority of his free time events, I was still disgusted but glad I knew the context.

As someone whose second favorite Danganronpa character is Korekiyo, it's nice to see you come to like him more of your own accord. The reason I like him so much is because there's a lot of fascination and intrigue behind his words and actions, ones that do require a second viewing to fully experience. And my favorite types of characters are those who reveal more about themselves with each new viewing. Also, your read of him being autistic coded is something I never thought about but surprisingly love.
I liked Korekiyo (korekiyo kinnie here ☆) from the moment he appeared in the game and I loved watching both his main game and free time events. I relate to him a lot. When he began talking about his sister for the first time, something immedietly felt off about it so I kind of expected this kind of thing to be revealed. They did him dirty with this whole incest thing. But at the same time, I also feel like he doesn't know that what happened to him was abuse. He developed an immoral, sickening obsession with his sister and created this whole tulpa of her to fill her absence when she died. My relationship with my own siblings aren't the best. My sister screwed me over countless of times, she threatened me with telling all of my dirty secrets *most of which would've gotten me beaten pretty badly or even kicked out of the house* to my parents if I didn't do what she did, etc. etc. Older siblings hold a huge, HUGE role in your life, and the power imbalance between you two is the thing that makes you afraid of them, or develop a heavy attachment to them (whether it's like Korekiyo's or not. Personally, I was afraid of my own sister) While it's sad to see him that he doesn't understand what happened to him was abuse (at least in my pov), we can't ignore his flaws either.
While I do believe his sister did abuse him, I still find it hard to like this guy. His character is triggering, and the way Danganronpa portrayed his abuse is hella nasty. Even so, this is an interesting take from you! Hope to see more videos likes this :0

aa, I genuinely fell in love with Shinguuji when I saw him and going through his FTE’s I can relate a lot to his character. it’s okay to dislike a character though !! it doesn’t make you any less valid. I feel so bad and even if he’s just a character from a video game I just wanted to break through the screen and hug him

Anyway, I’ve snooped around and done a lot of research on his character, but for some reason just couldn’t pick up on the autism thing- It seems really obvious, I mean, anthropology and his field of expertise is his fixation, he keeps going on and on and on about it, and isn’t exactly skilled at dealing with people. The good and logical headcanon. *Hand it over.*
God I need to finish the sketches ans pics for my Kio and Kirumi redemption/survivor arc. After listening to this...I feel a little unsettled because... I now relate to Kio. Thinking about the way I'd go about stuff in certain ways is how my parents acted. Be it for good intentions but done in a shameful or abusive way. But... on the positive side, because I relate to him, neither Kio or me have to be alone. And that is some good that can come from sharing experiences that were bad, you know what your friend has gone through and you can be there to listen and understand.

I've always liked Korekiyo; He's one of my favorite male characters from V3 (behind Kokichi and Shuichi). He is a really interesting character with a really interesting philosophy. While I went into playing V3 already knowing about what happened in Trial 3, I was still interested in his character regardless. His FTEs are some of my favorites in the whole series, and I feel like they really flesh out his character besides you-know-what and you-know-what people joke about. It's always bugged me that people sum up his entire character with you-know-what (not seesaw, I'm fine with that since it's more a meme and light-hearted), despite the fact that what happened in Trial 3 was a result of emotional and physical manipulation on behalf on his sister. He's a very interesting character. I'm glad that you took the time to rethink him. It's completely valid if you or anyone dislikes him, but I feel like when it comes to characters we hate, we should always give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, loved the short little video! Your thoughts about Korekiyo basically sum up how I feel about him.

@@xenothekami888 Ruruka Ando is the biggest example her and *him* (kokichi) are basically the same character with subtle changes, but Ruruka gets hated on for how she acts but Kokichi gets praised for those same actions but to the extreme, Celestia, Hiyoko, Mahiru, Mikan,Angie, Tenko, they are all the other major "Major Annoying" people that I can think most ppl hate on them for, but like the men of the series are worse than most the women the fandom really says "Mahiru had a bad first introduction and her father was lazy and didnt take care of her she is such a bitch, oh but my Haiji Towa is just so misunderstood sad face" like that's what these kinds of ppl do
I personally dislike Korekiyo, though I love all character discussions. I'm actually planning on going to Australia for my study abroad when airlines are back open, and I'm happy to know there are Danganronpa fans there too... Makes me feel a little less alien outside of my one friend.
I’m really glad to see this, I already had an idea that he likely experienced some sort of abuse in the past from his sister. So, seeing this video along with others with similar views and thoughts just confirms my thoughts. At first I used to hate him, but when I learned that she was much older than him and that she possibly used her illness to manipulate and isolate Korekiyo, then I realized, “Oh, maybe there is more to this character than I thought.” I also appreciate the thought that he could potentially have autism. I’ve also noticed him playing with some of the stuff he’s wearing and the bandages. I have very similar issues, I fiddle with stuff a lot, and I cannot stand certain textures/touch. For instance, the feeling of cardboard and paper, I just can’t stand it. I remember in elementary I needed to have a piece of plastic so I could put my hands on paper and write. Now, I’m a bit better about it, but of course it still bothers me. So I can definitely feel as though I can relate to Korekiyo because of it. Ultimately, I find him to be a really interesting character, I’m so glad you brought up the Nature vs. Nurture debate (studied it a bit in my psychology classes which were my favourite classes). I think some theories, and the nature vs nurture debate could be taken into account when looking into his character. Overall, I do believe he is a good character with this knowledge and insight about him. Great video, Aeris! I really enjoyed watching.
In the past, before I knew the seriousness about his past, I made a sister joke about him. I received death threats and was called a “Trump kinnie”, not even exaggerating. I love Korekiyo, but after that, I’m basically scared of talking about him
It's less I didn't like Korekiyo and more... Weirdly enough the Toko/Jack Serial Killer angle worked way better for me? It may just be from despair girls but yeah Korekiyo just didn't compare as much. Maybe I would've liked him more if he was more Hannibal Lector and not having the sister personality instead. Speaking of that angle, what's your opinion on Toko? Her development from DG 1 to Despair Girls and honestly just Jack in general made her a personal fave of mine.
I wanna apologize to the Danganronpa fandom, I made an incest joke about Korekiyo without knowing anything about his trauma it was only right after it got revealed and my friend was seeing my live reaction, I understand now why it's very insensitive and as someone who kins characters based on trauma, if any of them were made fun of for that I would be throwing hands, I honestly didn't know but I probably should have known better, it's not an excuse that justifies my actions and I completly understand that making fun of someone for trauma is 100 percent not okay. While I personally have not experienced something similar to what Korekiyo, I consider myself lucky seeing the number of people who have in the comments section here m heart goes out to all of you, I hope your home situation gets better. No incest joke is justified and I want to make that clear, I want to support the stop of trauma related jokes without coming off as a hypocrite as I understand better now the importance of this. The toxicity in this fandom needs to come to a stop and I want to help so this is why I am writing this. I really liked Korekiyo pre-Chapter 3. I like characters who look scary, but are actually a nice person on the inside, and I was under the impression that he was that type of character. But learning that he was a serial killer (who specifically targets women) was... rough, to say the least. And his motive only made things worse for me. I reeeeeally wish his motive was tied to the necromancy book Monokuma handed out instead. I understand Korekiyo's abuse, and I don't blame him at all for having been abused, but that doesn't mean I am obligated to like him. If the writers had kept in the story with his sister, but left out the part about him being a serial killer, I believe I would be more inclined to like the character. I don't like stories where victims of abuse become murderers; I think they send a wrong message.
So, I wouldn't say I love or hate Korekiyo, yet I do like his character design and all but I hate people who makes "incest" jokes as it (personally) isn't something to joke about. Wait here are my like non sexuality/gender Hc's for every character; Aoi Asahina- Has ADHD Byakuya Togami- Has Alexithymia Yasuhiro Hagakure- He like really wants a horse Toko Fukawa- Despite being a romance writer she actually really enjoys Murder Mystery books and tv shows Makoto Naegi- Originally he was a super toxic positive person, until Sakura died, Then Hina sorta showed him the negatives of always being positive Kyoko Kirigiri- She really likes candy but she acts like she dosent she also acts cold to everybody but she secretly cares for all of them ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mahiru Koizumi- she really dosent want kids but if she had them she would adopt as she grew up in a horrible situation and wants to help out other kids, she would also like volunteer at local animal shelters (the ones that dont have like a 2000% death rate tho) and she fights for equal rights (all the characters do this but like Mahiru specifically) Peko Pekoyama- She has like severe depression and s*ic*dal thoughts but Fuyuhiko, Sonia, and Akane always are there to help her, she also really wants to try archery but is too scared Ibuki Mioda- She really wants to start a band but is scared that everybody will leave her again and she only really hangs out with her other 3 friends and has severe trust issues Hiyoko Saionji- She personally dosent like children, except for Kotoko Utsugi, her and Kotoko prank Mahiru all the time Mikan Tsumiki- After the world was restored she got some therapy and even thought about being a therapist, but instead decided to become Hope's peak academy's nurse Nekomaru Nidai- He found a boyfriend and currently lives with his boyfriend, Akane, and her Boyfriend, and they watch sports every night but Akane allways gets upset because she wants to be playing them Gundham Tanaka- he helps endangered animal species and he secretly really thinks Kaz is cute but is too scared to tell him Nagito Komaeda- He is secretly really scared to die (he has some sort of disease that will kill you before I believe 20 or 30, but he is like kept alive due to his luck) and he thinks that if he dies nobody will remember him Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu- He had like a really bad smoking addiction after Natsumi died but Peko helped him out of it Hajime Hinata- He probably honestly became a teacher at Hope's peak and his bestest friend that isnt in his class is probably Aoi, they hang out a lot, and they talk about the loved ones they lost (Sakura, Yuta, and Chiaki) Sonia Nevermind- She actually has a backbone and character now wow Akane Owari- despute what she says Akane secretly really likes anime especially haikyu and kurokos basketball ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That's it
His mannerisms and appeal were the first things which got me to his character. Then he spoke and I always needed to reenact how he would speak and gesture (yes it was cringe,shut up I did it regardless),I loved his spiel with anthropology and the rituals...Theeeeeen class trial 3 happened and I felt QUITE the disturbance to my relationship to him. I simply couldn‘t really hate him that much,I did his freetime-events and even if they may he been a bit longer,believe me if I say I bloody spoke every line with his vocal-capacity (was it not like the original: I let you decide in your head 😅) I think what prevented me out of the real hatred for Korekiyo was his interest for other cultures and how much you could learn from him. I could simply not skip his dialogue and it still is a disgrace to destroy a character with this aspect (remembering of course the other girls he killed before the killing game for the same reason)
my biggest problem is that, regardless of the possible implications of korekiyo's abuse, you *cannot* definitely say that it's part of his backstory, and the amount of people that take it for granted to attack and guilt trip anyone that doesn't like korekiyo is toxic. i personally am for seeing more to his character, but if someone doesn't like him that's their own goddamn right, and it's nobody's place to try and get on a high horse for stanning a fictional serial killer.

I love Kiyo and I think you got exactly why! He's both incredibly unique and weird and not at all like people I know irl but still somehow believable and nuanced and realistic as a character. He's so fascinating to me, especially as a V3 character that is more reserved, quietly intellectual and less in-your-face about everything (for the most part, anyway) than most of the other kids
I really like your take. I know I was someone who hated Korekiyo on the first go around but I grew to like him just because of how similar our abuse was. That was honestly probably the thing that threw me off of him at the time. In all honesty the main difference is probably that she was my cousin and had a terminal illness but was able to recover. I wish Kiyo stuck with people in other ways because female abusers and male abuse victims need to be shown more in media. Just so men can be able to have resources to get help and women can get the same reprimands as men do rather then being rewarded.

Hi I’m the person who really really really likes Korekiyo XD Honestly when I first got into V3 I wasn’t overly huge on Korekiyo as a character, he was the first V3 character I knew so he sort of suck to me. His backstory didn’t phase at first it just made me go “what?” (I got completely spoiled for his story) I am still on the opinion that it should have been a childhood friend or even mentor (or like, have the sister and make them more of a partner in crime thing that would have been cool) He deserved so much better (something I can infodump about for agesss)
The jokes on Korekiyo isnt funny anymore. I absolutely love him he’s a good character. It’s like the Conny jokes , celestia jokes , Ibuki and Kaede jokes All unfunny.
You know, I always wonder what happened to his parents. Like, did they just not realise what was going on (and if so, how do you miss something like that?), were they just not there at all and left him and his sister to their own devices? Because he never even mentions them as far as I know
Korekiyo has been my hyperfixation since September 2017, it's nice to see more people like him now. He used to be widely hated from what I remember of the fandom then. He is the most relatable character for me in all of fiction. I've never been abused by a sibling, being an only child. But his personality, interests, tendency to turn every conversation into a lecture, and autism coding reminded me of me. People are free to dislike him of course, but more people should look at him more deeply instead of simply writing him off as a creepy incestual serial killer. Thank you for the video

I always found him to be very interesting and sympathetic, and I feel bad that a lot of people don’t seem to look much past the initial daunting subject of incest to see the red flags that hint that it’s not as consensual as he passes it off as up front. I like Korekiyo, I was dragged into Danganronpa and the first thing I saw was his design and I really liked it and then I figured out more about him and even though I already had in my head I liked him the reveal of the motive was ew. And they could have done so much more with him and they could have had two murderers for the third trial and maybe have given him a redemption Arc or something or kill him still. I understand him in ways, I also saw autism coded-ness especially with his constant drawing everything back to Anthropology. Korekiyo was definitely shaped by his sister greatly.

I love watching you talk about dagaronpa characters, even if kork isint really one of my favorite characters I can definitely say that he's a very interesting character to discuss.
I like to headcanon Miyadera (the common headcanon name for Sister Shinguji) as highly manipulative to everyone, not just Kiyo. Kiyo was just her puppet.

While I like Korekiyo, I always thought his reveal story was more of a reference to Hitchcock’s Norman Bates character? Like how Norman feels and acts like his mother, whom he loved a lot.

Korekiyo is kinda a sad character. In the beginning it may seem like his motive is another purely selfish one like the other case 3 killers but given some more thought and hindsight you can see that it’s much darker then “must kill people for dead incest lover” unlike Celeste and Mikan who both know what they are doing is purely selfish and out of a sick sense of greed/lust, Korekiyo does his crime out of a passion for someone he truly believes cares for him and a deep sense in the beauty of humanity and it’s nature. I often wish to see what should have happened if Korekiyo lived all the way to chap6 and have his soul completely crushed by the realization that his sister never existed and he basically killed Tenko/Angie for no good reason. It would probably be the most impactful despair a survivor had felt. Imagine carrying the guilt of at least 80+ murders for a ghost woman who traumatized you only to then be shown it was all a lie, BUT you really did kill one innocent person except now you have nothing to point to as a reason for her death.

I’ve always really liked Korekiyo, I love his design and his talent, I was enraptured from the moment he was introduced. But after the 3rd chapter, and finding out he was abused by his terminally ill sister, he went from being a character I simply liked, to a character I heavily related to, and my love for him only grew from there.
My mother is terminally ill, and she’s incredibly manipulative and abusive, she constantly uses her illness against me, to guilt me, or get her to do things for her, or keep me away from my friends, or even school, and whenever I try to talk to her about this, she yells at me and tells me that she’ll be dead soon, and that I’m going to regret talking to her like that, that I’m going to regret not appreciating her.
Up until recently, I thought these behaviours were normal, and okay, and that she was fully justified in treating me the way she did, because when you’ve been around something for SO LONG, you grow to believe it’s normal, and that you’re somehow in the wrong for wishing to oppose it, so you accept it. It’s also extremely hard to talk about issues like this, because of the fact that they ARE terminally ill, people have a natural inclination to feel empathetic towards these individuals, and when you try to talk about it, people tell you to cut them some slack, or that they can’t be that bad. It wasn’t until my friends pointed out how horrible she was that I even knew, I would tell them the things she would say and do and I would think that it was okay, or that they’d find it relatable, because “haha all parents must be like this!”
It’s tragic, and things like this do happen, and it’s honestly amazing to have a character who displays this obscure form of abuse, a reverse power imbalance, they’re using the fact that they ARE PHYSICALLY WEAKER to overpower you, and that’s rarely talked about, and it’s unfortunate that everyone only sees him as “lmao, incest is wincest lollll sister fucker”
Sorry for how long this is, and that it’s somewhat off-topic, i simply thought that I could provide some insight, as someone who’s been through a similar situation, although obviously not to the same extent.

Writing-wise defiantly, but Celestia's VA does such a good job switching from her fake French accent and her real accent, that it really takes the cake for me. Maybe if I played the games in Japanese, or no voice acting at all, I'd have a different opinion.

The character arc you've gone through reevaluating Kiyo is one of the prime V3 experience in my opinion. The arc the player goes through, initially (usually) enjoying the character, to suddenly hating him due to the reveal, but then consciously choosing to break down his character to the point of recognizing his backstory and his motivations is really impressive. The player doesn't have to like him after analyzing him, of course, but understanding him makes the player feel differently when going through the trial again, from abrupt disgust to a melancholic hopelessness for example. It's personally a brilliant example of a character that danganronpa could write, and it almost makes you wonder what went wrong with a certain... checkered, small, child from the same game.
(Honestly if they played up Kiyo's curiosity he would have made a brilliant mastermind, or at least fill the antagonist role, with a mix of "I wanted this killing game to happen so you all can do the dirty work of sending friends to my sister for me" and "I was so interested in seeing how each and every one of you would react to this game that there was no way to pass it up!". It wouldn't fit the theme as well, but I think it would'a been pretty neat.

in that case, I feel like the theme of truth vs lies would have to be completely reworked. Or, what I was thinking last night, maybe have it so both Tsumugi and Kokichk die in the first trial. The ultimate liar kills the mastermind thinking that she was the mastermind, only for the game to continue, and then the despair kokichi would feel after being wrong about his choice, as the game would have just continued if Tsumugi had died early,, only to be executed. It's in a similar vein to what legitimately happened in case 1, but we would get the added benefit of Kaede being the protagonist, and how the chapters would shift from that point onwards, giving different characters the spotlight.
But this makes me want to look back on the game and try to rework what the death order would be if both the mastermind and original antagonist die first.

as a korekiyo fan and someone who was abused by their older sibling (thankfully not to the same extent as kiyo) it makes me feel sick to see people call korekiyo hates abuse apologists. chapter 3 made a lot of people feel uncomfortable about kiyo's character so it's completely understandable to dislike him. in fact you don't even need a specific reason to dislike a character and it's sad that fandoms will treat hating a character like you've just committed a heinous crime.
yes kiyo is a big comfort character and kin for me but you are 100% allowed to dislike a character just because they have a tragic backstory doesnt mean you HAVE to like them. as long as your not doing something like joking about their trauma or being insensitive, you can dislike characters.

I’ve always enjoyed the basics of Kiyos character because of how much he establishes himself as an “observer,” sort of reminding me of Nagitos shenanigans in terms of “what beauty can I witness here?” but much more tolerable because Kiyo has a much more interesting and less annoying personality.

While I’m not a massive Kiyo stan, I still really enjoy this character. I originally only took interest in him because I had a strong interest in anthropology, but I slowly came to really appreciate his character. As someone whose second favorite Danganronpa character is Korekiyo, it's nice to see you come to like him more of your own accord. The reason I like him so much is because there's a lot of fascination and intrigue behind his words and actions, ones that do require a second viewing to fully experience. And my favorite types of characters are those who reveal more about themselves with each new viewing.
Also, your read of him being autistic coded is something I never thought about but surprisingly love.

I liked Korekiyo (korekiyo kinnie here ☆) from the moment he appeared in the game and I loved watching both his main game and free time events. I relate to him a lot. When he began talking about his sister for the first time, something immedietly felt off about it so I kind of expected this kind of thing to be revealed.
They did him dirty with this whole incest thing. But at the same time, I also feel like he doesn't know that what happened to him was abuse. He developed an immoral, sickening obsession with his sister and created this whole tulpa of her to fill her absence when she died.
My relationship with my own siblings aren't the best. My sister screwed me over countless of times, she threatened me with telling all of my dirty secrets *most of which would've gotten me beaten pretty badly or even kicked out of the house* to my parents if I didn't do what she did, etc. etc.
Older siblings hold a huge, HUGE role in your life, and the power imbalance between you two is the thing that makes you afraid of them, or develop a heavy attachment to them (whether it's like Korekiyo's or not. Personally, I was afraid of my own sister)
While it's sad to see him that he doesn't understand what happened to him was abuse (at least in my pov), we can't ignore his flaws either.
While I do believe his sister did abuse him, I still find it hard to like this guy. His character is triggering, and the way Danganronpa portrayed his abuse is hella nasty. Even so, this is an interesting take from you! Hope to see more videos likes this :0

I’m a huge Korekiyo kinnie, because that man makes me feel seen without... Actually seeing me? I've always liked Korekiyo; He's one of my favorite male characters from V3 (behind Kokichi and Shuichi). He is a really interesting character with a really interesting philosophy. While I went into playing V3 already knowing about what happened in Trial 3, I was still interested in his character regardless. His FTEs are some of my favorites in the whole series, and I feel like they really flesh out his character besides you-know-what and you-know-what people joke about. It's always bugged me that people sum up his entire character with you-know-what (not seesaw, I'm fine with that since it's more a meme and light-hearted), despite the fact that what happened in Trial 3 was a result of emotional and physical manipulation on behalf on his sister.
He's a very interesting character. I'm glad that you took the time to rethink him. It's completely valid if you or anyone dislikes him, but I feel like when it comes to characters we hate, we should always give them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, loved the short little video! Your thoughts about Korekiyo basically sum up how I feel about him.

I personally dislike Korekiyo, though I love all character discussions. I'm actually planning on going to Australia for my study abroad when airlines are back open, and I'm happy to know there are Danganronpa fans there too... Makes me feel a little less alien outside of my one friend.
I’m really glad to see this, I already had an idea that he likely experienced some sort of abuse in the past from his sister. So, seeing this video along with others with similar views and thoughts just confirms my thoughts. At first I used to hate him, but when I learned that she was much older than him and that she possibly used her illness to manipulate and isolate Korekiyo, then I realized, “Oh, maybe there is more to this character than I thought.”
I also appreciate the thought that he could potentially have autism. I’ve also noticed him playing with some of the stuff he’s wearing and the bandages. I have very similar issues, I fiddle with stuff a lot, and I cannot stand certain textures/touch. For instance, the feeling of cardboard and paper, I just can’t stand it. I remember in elementary I needed to have a piece of plastic so I could put my hands on paper and write. Now, I’m a bit better about it, but of course it still bothers me. So I can definitely feel as though I can relate to Korekiyo because of it.
Ultimately, I find him to be a really interesting character, I’m so glad you brought up the Nature vs. Nurture debate (studied it a bit in my psychology classes which were my favourite classes). I think some theories, and the nature vs nurture debate could be taken into account when looking into his character. Overall, I do believe he is a good character with this knowledge and insight about him. Great video, Aeris! I really enjoyed watching.
I really like kiyo when I first saw him, his character desighn and personality were an interesting part of the story. Also his VA did an amazing job.

In the past, before I knew the seriousness about his past, I made a sister joke about him. I received death threats and was called a “Trump kinnie”, not even exaggerating. I love Korekiyo, but after that, I’m basically scared of talking about him

It's less I didn't like Korekiyo and more... Weirdly enough the Toko/Jack Serial Killer angle worked way better for me? It may just be from despair girls but yeah Korekiyo just didn't compare as much. Maybe I would've liked him more if he was more Hannibal Lector and not having the sister personality instead.
Speaking of that angle, what's your opinion on Toko? Her development from DG 1 to Despair Girls and honestly just Jack in general made her a personal fave of mine.

I wanna apologize to the Danganronpa fandom, I made an incest joke about Korekiyo without knowing anything about his trauma it was only right after it got revealed and my friend was seeing my live reaction, I understand now why it's very insensitive and as someone who kins characters based on trauma, if any of them were made fun of for that I would be throwing hands, I honestly didn't know but I probably should have known better, it's not an excuse that justifies my actions and I completly understand that making fun of someone for trauma is 100 percent not okay. While I personally have not experienced something similar to what Korekiyo, I consider myself lucky seeing the number of people who have in the comments section here m heart goes out to all of you, I hope your home situation gets better. No incest joke is justified and I want to make that clear, I want to support the stop of trauma related jokes without coming off as a hypocrite as I understand better now the importance of this. The toxicity in this fandom needs to come to a stop and I want to help so this is why I am writing this. I really liked Korekiyo pre-Chapter 3. I like characters who look scary, but are actually a nice person on the inside, and I was under the impression that he was that type of character. But learning that he was a serial killer (who specifically targets women) was... rough, to say the least. And his motive only made things worse for me. I reeeeeally wish his motive was tied to the necromancy book Monokuma handed out instead. I understand Korekiyo's abuse, and I don't blame him at all for having been abused, but that doesn't mean I am obligated to like him. If the writers had kept in the story with his sister, but left out the part about him being a serial killer, I believe I would be more inclined to like the character. I don't like stories where victims of abuse become murderers; I think they send a wrong message.
So, I wouldn't say I love or hate Korekiyo, yet I do like his character design and all but I hate people who makes "incest" jokes as it (personally) isn't something to joke about.

yeah Korekiyo is my favorite character but i will respect if you dislike him. Also why do i really like him, well yes he has a great acting and i love his lines and makes me happy everytime hes on the screen except that one scene. Kyoko Kirigiri- She really likes candy but she acts like she dosent she also acts cold to everybody but she secretly cares for all of them

Peko Pekoyama- She has like severe depression and s*ic*dal thoughts but Fuyuhiko, Sonia, and Akane always are there to help her, she also really wants to try archery but is too scared
Ibuki Mioda- She really wants to start a band but is scared that everybody will leave her again and she only really hangs out with her other 3 friends and has severe trust issues
Hiyoko Saionji- She personally dosent like children, except for Kotoko Utsugi, her and Kotoko prank Mahiru all the time
Mikan Tsumiki- After the world was restored she got some therapy and even thought about being a therapist, but instead decided to become Hope's peak academy's nurse
Nekomaru Nidai- He found a boyfriend and currently lives with his boyfriend, Akane, and her Boyfriend, and they watch sports every night but Akane allways gets upset because she wants to be playing them
Gundham Tanaka- he helps endangered animal species and he secretly really thinks Kaz is cute but is too scared to tell him
Nagito Komaeda- He is secretly really scared to die (he has some sort of disease that will kill you before I believe 20 or 30, but he is like kept alive due to his luck) and he thinks that if he dies nobody will remember him
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu- He had like a really bad smoking addiction after Natsumi died but Peko helped him out of it
Hajime Hinata- He probably honestly became a teacher at Hope's peak and his bestest friend that isnt in his class is probably Aoi, they hang out a lot, and they talk about the loved ones they lost (Sakura, Yuta, and Chiaki)
Sonia Nevermind- She actually has a backbone and character now wow
Akane Owari- despute what she says Akane secretly really likes anime especially haikyu and kurokos basketball

His mannerisms and appeal were the first things which got me to his character. Then he spoke and I always needed to reenact how he would speak and gesture (yes it was cringe,shut up I did it regardless),I loved his spiel with anthropology and the rituals...Theeeeeen class trial 3 happened and I felt QUITE the disturbance to my relationship to him.
I simply couldn‘t really hate him that much,I did his freetime-events and even if they may he been a bit longer,believe me if I say I bloody spoke every line with his vocal-capacity (was it not like the original: I let you decide in your head 😅)
I think what prevented me out of the real hatred for Korekiyo was his interest for other cultures and how much you could learn from him. I could simply not skip his dialogue and it still is a disgrace to destroy a character with this aspect (remembering of course the other girls he killed before the killing game for the same reason)
my biggest problem is that, regardless of the possible implications of korekiyo's abuse, you *cannot* definitely say that it's part of his backstory, and the amount of people that take it for granted to attack and guilt trip anyone that doesn't like korekiyo is toxic. i personally am for seeing more to his character, but if someone doesn't like him that's their own goddamn right, and it's nobody's place to try and get on a high horse for stanning a fictional serial killer.

I love Kiyo and I think you got exactly why! He's both incredibly unique and weird and not at all like people I know irl but still somehow believable and nuanced and realistic as a character. He's so fascinating to me, especially as a V3 character that is more reserved, quietly intellectual and less in-your-face about everything (for the most part, anyway) than most of the other kids
I really like your take. I know I was someone who hated Korekiyo on the first go around but I grew to like him just because of how similar our abuse was. That was honestly probably the thing that threw me off of him at the time. In all honesty the main difference is probably that she was my cousin and had a terminal illness but was able to recover. I wish Kiyo stuck with people in other ways because female abusers and male abuse victims need to be shown more in media. Just so men can be able to have resources to get help and women can get the same reprimands as men do rather then being rewarded.

Honestly when I first got into V3 I wasn’t overly huge on Korekiyo as a character, he was the first V3 character I knew so he sort of suck to me. His backstory didn’t phase at first it just made me go “what?” (I got completely spoiled for his story) I am still on the opinion that it should have been a childhood friend or even mentor (or like, have the sister and make them more of a partner in crime thing that would have been cool)
He deserved so much better (something I can infodump about for agesss)

You know, I always wonder what happened to his parents. Like, did they just not realise what was going on (and if so, how do you miss something like that?), were they just not there at all and left him and his sister to their own devices? Because he never even mentions them as far as I know
Korekiyo has been my hyperfixation since September 2017, it's nice to see more people like him now. He used to be widely hated from what I remember of the fandom then.
He is the most relatable character for me in all of fiction. I've never been abused by a sibling, being an only child. But his personality, interests, tendency to turn every conversation into a lecture, and autism coding reminded me of me. People are free to dislike him of course, but more people should look at him more deeply instead of simply writing him off as a creepy incestual serial killer.

I’m super glad you gave Kiyo another chance! He’s totally one of my favorite characters. I always found him to be very interesting and sympathetic, and I feel bad that a lot of people don’t seem to look much past the initial daunting subject of incest to see the red flags that hint that it’s not as consensual as he passes it off as up front. Good for you for keeping an open mind.
I like Korekiyo, I was dragged into Danganronpa and the first thing I saw was his design and I really liked it and then I figured out more about him and even though I already had in my head I liked him the reveal of the motive was ew. And they could have done so much more with him and they could have had two murderers for the third trial and maybe have given him a redemption Arc or something or kill him still. I understand him in ways, I also saw autism coded-ness especially with his constant drawing everything back to Anthropology. Korekiyo was definitely shaped by his sister greatly.

I like to headcanon Miyadera (the common headcanon name for Sister Shinguji) as highly manipulative to everyone, not just Kiyo. Kiyo was just her puppet.

Korekiyo has a cool design, talent, and personality in the first chapters. But the sister thing really messed up his character, it took my a while before I started to like him.

While I like Korekiyo, I always thought his reveal story was more of a reference to Hitchcock’s Norman Bates character? Like how Norman feels and acts like his mother, whom he loved a lot.

Im a long-time Korekiyo fan and kinnie, (though I am sorry that people tried to call you an abuse exucser- thats just not right at all) but this may help a lot of people who dislike Kork simply because they think he's just 'hee hoo alabama incesr man'. I actually have mixed feelings on jow the Danganronpa team handled his whole sitch. On one hand, he does explain his and Sister's relationship from the perspective of a victim, however, a lot of people didn't seem to actually pay enough attention to his free time events, which led to them thinking *he* was the one to initiate the grossness that was that "relationship". Then again, that tracks for the victim view. If he had been gr00med his whole life into thinking that stuff was fine, why would he explain it any other way???
