2018 Aprilia Shiver 900 and Dorsoduro 900 Review

  • It’s rare that a manufacturer debuts two new models at the same time unless there are multiple trims such as the Aprilia RSV4 RR and Factory versions. When MO found out we would be riding both Aprilia’s new Dorsoduro and its Shiver 900, I was actually looking forward to the novel opportunity. It would be interesting to see how different the motorcycles would feel while sharing many of the same components, most notably, the same 896cc 90-degree V-Twin engine.

      A.E.T. You got a point there. I can't stand these huge motorcycle channels that just do track day comparisons of 5 motorcycles at a time but obviously cannot hide their biased like for one particular bike in the group, even though we all know damn well they were paid off by the manufacturer to talk up the overpriced piece of shit they are comparing.. Alongside the 4 other bikes.. *gasps for air* I mean CLEARLY the $9k Suzuki, $7k Kawasaki, $7k Honda, an $10k Yamaha all are great mid weight naked bikes, but DO TELL how Ducati is superior in every fucking way giving zero explanation why knowing just right before the cameras start rolling you struggle to get comfortable on the bikes while dealing with the multiple $100 bills Ducati shoved up your ass.. Yeah, I prefer this guy.

    You're quoting rear wheel dyno figures and the factory hp figures. Factories almost always quote engine Dyno numbers, not wheel dyno numbers. That is enough to account for the HP discrepancies.

      The fact that they don't know that makes me question their credibility.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Před 5 lety +5

      I can't trust anything from this guy / this channel. They miss a lot of obvious things and forget about stuff that the average internet rider with just a year of experience knows.. And all these people in the comments are praising the guy just because he has some negativity in his review (which I don't mind), but come on he's literally closing his eyes to a ton of factual stuff he should know about. And no mention of the 750 version either, which has the same hp numbers but slightly less torque.. I've been on the Shiver and I am 6ft3 (190cm), and I had no issues with hitting my feet anywhere, and the Dorso should be even better due to its higher seat height. I just don't trust this guy, simple as that.

    So, is the 90-something power claim at the flywheel or the rear tire. If you're comparing power at the rear tire to a flywheel power rating, of course the power will be down due to parasitic driveline loss.

    • @Szlejer
      @Szlejer Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, I have no idea about the Alfa which came with a cracked dashboard from the factory, random plastic parts falling off in the passenger compartment, oil pump dead in less than 2k miles so it had to be towed back to the dealer...

    • @67claudius
      @67claudius Před 6 lety +3

      Unfortunately, Aprilia never had Alfa Romeo's designers who created masterpieces like the 8C or 33 Stradale or Giulia TZ, but it enjoys a better reputation for reliability. This comparison seems more apt for MV.

  • @cityandcovers
    @cityandcovers Před 6 lety +24

    Claiming the power was down? Pretty sure all dynos measured wheel horsepower and not crank hp that companies measure off of. Be clear with how you review this. Made it sound really negative

    • @cney2125
      @cney2125 Před 6 lety +5

      I was thinking the same. ~10hp drivetrain loss seems about right.
      But he did also say they seemed underpowered conpared to the competition.

    • @c0c0asauce
      @c0c0asauce Před 6 lety +2

      You never know where the factory measured the hp from but motorcycle.com tests all the bikes the same way. They are just comparing it to other bikes they have tested.

    • @cityandcovers
      @cityandcovers Před 6 lety +5

      Factorys always measure crank hp on engine dynos. Goes the same with cars. Probably comparing ot to the ducati hylermotard that has bit over 100hp id guess

    • @c0c0asauce
      @c0c0asauce Před 6 lety

      cityandcovers The dynos just read different. Every manufacturer would have to use the same machine. For manufacturer claims to be accurate. It's well known manufactures fudge numbers up and down too.
      For what it's worth it doesn't sound low to me. 100hp per liter is good on a street bike.

      @HeyAddieImTojo Před 6 lety

      Unless they upped the head ports & valves.. an engine's not going to breath much differently.. especially if they don't re-cam them.. so big valves & ports.. 92 x 67.4 vs 92 x 54.6.. long stroke for more torque & would explain reports of the 900 being a little harsher & buzzier feeling.. shame the weight wasn't 10kg lighter & they should've used the fuel tanks setup from the 750 Mana that would be brilliant.. especially with the higher seat a 20ltr tank would easily achieved

      I initially thought the same but that "power loss" is all because of new emissions regulations so maybe these might actually have more power hidden away to be unlocked with mods and tuning.

    Horrible review. Fucks up the hp numbers for crank vs wheel, doesn't mention the 750 version with same hp output - and even says the Dorso is meant to ride more like a supermoto which is an obvious lie. It's nothing like a supermoto, and it doesn't try to be one. It's merely the looks and seating position, everything else is worlds away from supermoto so don't make that comparison, especially with the engine and drivetrain setup. Can't trust anything in this review.

With that out of the way, not too impressed with either model, but that could change if I had the chance to ride them during the day when I could see the road...Think I'll keep my Yamaha Super Tenere for now.
