Can Roller Coasters get Stuck Upside-Down?

- The general public seems to think that roller coasters can get stuck upside down on a loop or inversion. In order to clear up this confusion, I wanted to make a video covering this topic. This video was made through a lot of research. Feel free to (politely) correct me on any facts I get wrong in this video, and Iʻd love to hear your thoughts!
PLEASE NOTE: I have been made aware by my viewers of a 5th accident. In 1997, Sirocco at Walibi Belgium, a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop (like Montezooma’s Revenge) wasn’t launched fast enough so it got stuck upside down on its loop. Since then, Sirocco was heavily modified to have a magnetic launch and new trains. It is now Psyke Underground.
We have been spending most of our lives living a coaster paradise. Like if you know what song I’m referencing.
The modifications mentioned were made around 2013 as a refurbishment of Sirocco/Turbine to get it running after being closed for 4 years, not because of safety reasons or preventing valleying.
My dad thold me that when i was 6
What about the maverick incident that GP to Enthusiast mentioned in his “stuck upside down on a roller coaster for 3 days” video?
The Schwarzkopf coaster jammed at the top of the loop becuase of a collapsed wheel bearing that resulted in essentially a square wheel. It took about 2 hours to free the train into an upright position after about a quarter of the riders had been evacuated.
Came from GP to Enthusiast's video. Good video!
Thank you very much! Thanks to him too!
808CoasterLife 😊
Same... Awesome
Same
Same bro
-i have seen a fireball stuck upside down-
*NOT A COASTER*
Kyton Mendoza you’re right!
XD
Good info. You would think that if you got stuck upside down due to "valleying" the people could all shift their weight to push it one way or the other
😂😂😂 if that actually happened that would be hilarious
Btw airtime thrills love your videos. I would think that even if weight wasn't pushed staff would have a plan in place to evacuate or restore power to the ride asap. This three days upside down with no phone no food and relying on sex or something would never happen. The only type of loop you could get stuck on would be a super loop which and I agree with others isn't a coaster.
Yes that “stuck upside down for 3 days” video was a hilarious sight to see.
@@808CoasterLife anything for CZcams views eh guys? By that i mean the things people will do for views likes and sympathy
I've been thinking about doing a video about rides that actually got upside down and came across this video. Love your presentation and enthusiasm! Keep up the great work!
Omg thank you so much Peter!
Some kid told me he was stuck upside down on California screamin for 5 hours.
"Some kid" isn't a very reliable source
A lot of people like to claim that they’ve been stuck upside down but unless there’s evidence, I wouldn’t trust them to be true.
@@808CoasterLife I got stuck on two face the flip side upside down I can show u the news article
That kid wouldn’t even be alive to tell the story
@fairy wishes So you’re saying don’t listen to the truth?
1. I mentioned in the video that Demon was one of the FEW instances where a coaster got stuck upside down.
2. Riders were never stuck upside down on Flying Dinosaur. I mentioned that in the video as well.
Just because I was a “kid” back then doesn’t mean I’m invalid 🤷♂️
Mumbo Jumbo You Are AFK I’m Gonna Take Your Riders away!
Lmao
Oooooooooooooooohhhh
I dare someone to blast that at an amusement park, or on the hermitcraft server
KM Productions this is like three levels deep humor, kudos to you
I believe DEMON was just mechanical.. a single wheel or wheel system broke the created enough drag to slow the ride... essentially the wheel(s) acted as a break pinching the rail
Good to know!
One time my boyfriend got stuck upside down on a fireball ride at a fair near our town. The riders ended up using their body weight and managed to get the ride going again after about ten minutes. He was a little red in the face and needed some water but otherwise they were all fine, no injuries. There was a lot of wind that day and it had rained that morning so both of those could have had something to do with it.
Coaster: *gets stuck upside down*
The coaster: GRAVITY DONT MEAT THAT MUCH TO ME
Nice 👌
I met someone who claimed to be a passenger if the Demon ride when they stuck upside down. They didn’t know it was even possible to get stuck, but their story had always terrified me about crazy rides.
Interesting! Although that still happened, it’s very rare!
There is no reason to be scared. Millions of people ride coasters EVERY YEAR and approximately 50 people have ever been stuck upside down
I was there the day the Demon got stuck upside down and had just rode it! It was crazy.
My grandfather claims he has been stuck upside down in a loop a long time ago on Dreier Looping at the German fair (now called Quimera and located at a park in Mexico) I guess it's cool to know that my grandfather has once most likely ridden the legendary Quimera but the whole upside down in loop story just makes everything it a little suspicious for sure
Very interesting. Maybe (if it’s true) the incident didn’t get much attention from the media as much as others.
Also lucky him that he got to ride Quimera ;)
Hello I'm from the future and Quimera is kind of a sore subject for the coaster Community nowadays.
@@bjtgaming yeah... yikes...
@@808CoasterLife I used to live near a funfair in Bonn Germany. The fair featured one big rollercoaster ride every year. Up until 1995 or 1996 it used to be the Dreier looping (quimera). Afterwards it used to be the olympia looping. Around this time I do recall the rollercoaster getting stuck upside down between 95-97. It was stuck for quite a while. Some friends walked about half an hour to the fair to witness this.
In the same year I recall the same rollercoaster getting stuck before the initial drop quite a few times. One time the stoppage time was unusually long. The fair is called Pützchens Markt, but it will be hard to find anything online as the Internet archives for the local papers only go back to the year 2000. If you do find a way of finding out more about this please let me know. I would be interested in knowing how you found out! (apparently Google search is not all knowing)
The quimera ride was amazing BTW. I was 6 or 7 when I went on it.
Mumbo Jumbo opened brand new in 2009 with the incident happening in 2010. The media likes to blow things out of proportion as usual by saying riders were left stranded upside down for half an hour when in fact they were only hanging for 10 minutes. We got the call to say the ride had stopped upside down with guests on board within seconds of it happening and I have never seen engineers move so fast. The car was upright 10 minutes later with everyone safely evacuated 10 minutes after that. It is suprising how strong a plastic poncho can be......
Despite of Final Destination 3
?
Just watched that scene, that would’ve been a disaster lol
808CoasterLife Haha Ikr
Gp to enthusiast has debunked this scene.
@@NC5618 yes, gloriously

Haha, same
*“A random roller coaster in china”*
None of the articles had a name for the Chinese coaster that got stuck upside down so I just regarded it as the random roller coaster in China 😂
Random rollercoaster😂😂😂in China
Love your determination to help the fear of people get over the fear new sub now love you already
Thank you!
Love this stuff bro!
Oh my gosh how do you not have 1k subscribers? You tottaly deserve it!
Thank you, I’d say I’m pretty close!
What do they do if you do get stuck upside down? How long did they stay up there usually and how do they remove you? I would just be so scared of passing out because the blood rushes to your head and you could die
I hate how the media put everything at theme parks way out of proportion. Since the smiler incident the uk media has jumped at everything that has happened at Alton towers like people getting stuck on lift hills. I wish that we were allowed to lecture the gp on why coasters are safe
I wish as well 😔
I don't know if you would call it getting stuck upside down but once on the end of an El Loco coaster (square like loop) we stopped for a few seconds and rolled backwards twords the last inversion
Why didn't the makers of Final Destination 3 used this Roller Coaster in the first scene when the roller coaster crashes? The name suits it, the color, and the loops. They wouldn't have to use CGI to make loops like they did in Playland's Corkscrew
What coaster are you referring to?
Came here from GP to Enthusiast and have now subbed to you. Super informative!! However I do have a couple unanswered questions that you may or (may not, and if so it's okay) be able to explain. How would riders who are stuck upside down be rescued? I can't imagine the restraints being unlocked and them evacuated like on a regular ride stoppage. Is the focus more about how to get the train back down? And how DO they get the train to come back down?
It’s hard to find footage of how they rescue the people on CZcams but when I have time I’ll look into it. Thanks for subbing! GP to Enthusiast is a great channel.
Ive rode the Demon many times since 1998 and that thought was always in the back of my mind
Okay so correct me if I’m wrong anyone. I remember when I was a child I was going to Canada’s wonderland on a frequent. I remember sky rider got stuck just about before the loop was going the front passengers were pretty much upside down. I yelled to my mom. “Mom, mom, look at sky rider, and she said what’s wrong? And she went. “Oh” I clearly remember there was a power outage or something, it was so weird... this was roughly 15 some odd years ago.
Did the train valley or just stay stuck on that section of track?
808CoasterLife as weird as it was it stayed stuck and they had to get a skyjack to go and get the passengers down from the ride... weirdest day of my life
2:18
I loved this demonstration for some reason 😂😂😂😂 it really struck me as funny! It was really cute! 😂
Psyké Underground at walibi belgium also got stuk in the loop its a shuttle loop idk how it happend but it did there is a video about it
There have been a few more times a rollercoaster has gone up side down, but that's due to the manuer x car lifts, they do happen time to time on them rides, more than any other coaster
Shaun's stuff (formally sloth gaming) makes sense. I wonder if this is the reason why parks don’t usually go for the Maurer skyloop AS their next coaster.
Ur vids are great! Keep on goin
Thank you!
I always though there was another incident on lightning loops, the interlocking arrow launch loops
I seem to remember that in the first year of operation of the Bat at Canada's Wonderland, the train valleyed in the middle of the Cobra roll... though this doesn't put everyone in the train upside-down, some were certainly stuck sideways / somewhat inverted. Fortunately there is a platform & escape stair that accesses that section of the ride.
Apparently that happens sometimes on other Vekoma Boomerangs (the type of coaster Bat is). Hopefully they got out safely
Not exactly what you were asking for, but kind of adjacent. A co-worker this week tried to tell me that as he was walking through the parking lot at Six Flags New England, he saw someone fall out at the top of a loop on Superman. Now, how many things are wrong with his statement?
If I am not mistaken, there was a case in Belgium in 1997.
My mom once said that she got stuck upside down on SooperDooperLooper at HersheyPark. I told her that it was a terrain coaster and that the only loop on the ride was the first element, so that wasn’t possible
It's not upside down but man being stuck on a flying coaster like that for an extended period would be super uncomfortable! Not dangerous, mind. Just uncomfortable.
Definitely!
You missed one in my home country, Belgium: in 1997, at Walibi Belgium, the Scirocco (a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop that got heavily modernized and changed its name to Psyké Underground in the mid 2010's) got stuck upside down in the loop (the train was perfectly balanced) due to not being launched enough to finish the loop, but too much to reverse to the station. The malfunction that caused it was so rare, that the designers never predicted it could even happen, and that the investigators said that the incident was purely random. It never happened again. There is footage of that on CZcams since it was reported by various TV news reports at the time and was probably already relayed on the internet then anyway since it was the early days of the internet.
Update: after a quick search, here is some footage made by a French TV channel at the time czcams.com/video/x-c1iZuUWxA/video.html
imaginox9 it’s interesting how none of the sites and online discussions I saw about this topic mentioned this incident. Pretty interesting!
@@808CoasterLife Yes pretty weird indeed. I know this incident was relayed at least in other European countries and fun fact: when the coaster reopened after investigation, while the park was expecting lower frequentation of it, actually, there was even more people wanting to have a ride on it
Honestly I’ve ridden Mumbo Jumbo and I find it pretty boring. It would have been torture to be stuck upside down on that as the restraints are the worst I have ever experienced, they dug into my shoulders when I ride it.
I have an example thats among the rare... Many years ago in Aalborg Tivoli, we had the boomerang with peeps upside down. During the corkscrew or what you call it. So it can happen.
I believe now there’s certain coasters that have a high chance of you getting stuck upside down but they aren’t full on roller coasters. Happened to me the other day on the Harry Potter Forbidden Journey ride.
I remember when I was a kid Schwarzkopf shuttle loop got stuck upside down, and made the news. Very rare factors. Basically almost a balancing act after launching too slowly, wind and weather.
I was watching some CCTV footage of the infamous Smiler accident. The empty train did get stuck upside down briefly on one of the inversions but then rolled back and vallied. Then the other one collided with it. But your point still stands: it's incredibly rare.
I don’t count accidents where there’s no one on the train (hence why I also didn’t include Maverick in the video) but that’s interesting!
@@808CoasterLife here's the link. It's pretty wild watching what happened that day. czcams.com/video/8DolzxUPBjE/video.html
Maverick at Cedar Point had valleyed upside down recently during testing on the horseshoe roll
Also Scirocco in Walibi Belgium in 1997.
It’s terrifying to think if this happens.
1:36 If I remember correctly, a same kind of roller coaster here in Finland had also gotten stuck in the lift hill upside-down
That would make sense
Zoomerang at Lake Compounce valleyed at the low point of its cobra roll in 2001 because of a sensor failure that caused it to continue through the station instead of stopping and didn't have enough energy to continue all the way through the roll. The media really hyped this up as there had been a maintenance accident just the day before on a different ride and everyone claimed the ride had gotten "stuck upside down" when it really hadn't.
It’s funny how people can claim that and not watch the footage of the accident 🤣
Drayton Manor : G Force is an X-Coaster that's also been stuck upside down.
Any evidence? (News articles, etc.)
@@808CoasterLife Nah, I was there on a school trip. Wasn't there for long, like 3 minutes tops then it carried on starting.
I actually rode Demon in the late '90s a few times. Glad I didn't get stuck on it THIS time.
Don’t worry because it’s very rare!
I distinctly remember the Mind Bender at Six Flags Over Georgia getting stuck upside down once.
Yeah Bru try explaining that to me when i got stuck on the king cobra at king's island. I was there I was on the ride and fire department had to come get us out. Still want to call me out we were on the news. It was great
There was another incident. In belgium. Sirocco in walibi
It happened in Belgium as well some time ago
I’m pretty sure maverick vallied during testing in the horseshoe roll
coaster at phoenix, arizonas castles and coasters got stuck upside down sometime in the 2000s. was on the news there
I looked at multiple articles of Desert Storm getting stuck and it seems like the ride was stuck on a banked turn and not upside down. These were kinda recent articles.
“If that was confusing, I’m sorry...I don’t know how to make it any easier.” Lolol
At least, me 2 years ago can’t figure that out lol
That happened to my buddy Bob Sacamantas. He got stuck upside down on the zippyzoo at the Sienfeld international amusement park.

Wasn’t Maverick Valleying upside down? There’s a video on it.
Yes technically but no one was on the train when that happened.
I heard people saying that sooperdooperlooper at Hersheypark got people stuck in the loop all the time
of all the looping rides in the world - that one is a near perfect circle and thus IMPOSSIBLE to do so.
wow thank you this helped me with my fear of rollercoasters
I’m glad I helped!
Well I may or may not be getting alpengeist now that I have watched this video.
My husband says he remembers kumba got stuck upside down back in like 94
A few years ago my mom and aunt got stuck on the barrel roll on Thunder Bird upside down
very good!
I’m glad you approve it!
i got stuck upside down in a single loop roller coaster at a state fair
Kailee Pogue lol you're extremely GP. You rode a Larson super loop at your state fair. 1 Larson loops are NOT Roller coasters 2 Larson loops are intended to hang riders upside down
siroco at walibi park belguim 1997.
Yep, that one also.
It was one of the most terrible launch coasters i have ever ridden which used a "flying wheel" to launch it at the time.
Highly uncomfortable.
Does headbanging count as being injured
JPHudson08 YT Typically it doesn’t count unless the result of head banging was very bad.
Yes, definitely
I’ve seen it at my home park. It’s really sad when it happens
What’s your home park?
0:41 Bro this is the worst 😭 why do so many people make up this exact story? And they always include that they almost slipped out and their sibling or parent or friend or whatever had to hold them in? Why do people crave attention that badly?
It happened in Denmark in the 80's as well. I remember having all the newspaper clippings of the coaster with pictures of it stuck. I was a big deal (in Denmark)
Do you remember the name of the coaster?
@@808CoasterLife boomerang.
I've been googeling my butt off to try and find any online articles mentioning it. But i guess local papers from the north of Denmark from the 1980's has not been made available online.
Ok, thanks for letting me know!
It’s possible for something to get jammed just as it so happens to be upside down.
If I’m not wrong, I think that’s what happened with Mumbo Jumbo but that happened only once in roller coaster history. Also roller coasters are inspected and tested daily. The reason why it got jammed up is because of a poncho which is why people shouldn’t carry loose articles on a roller coaster.
mystery mine got stuck upside down once but no one was on it and it was at the gang at the end. i think theres a video on youtube
Yeah those things happen sometimes when it’s testing or it’s cold.
I’ve been on demon, it’s my least favorite rollercoaster your neck hurts for so long after going on it. And I love rollercoasters but not demon. No wonder it got stuck upside down.
I’ve gotten stuck on the wonder woman ride we were going up and I was the first one in their individual rights and I got stuck and I was the first one so I saw everything below it it was so scary and yes it went upside down but it was when we were going up
My world Baker What park did this happen at?
i worked at 6-flags astroworld and seen Greezed Lightnin get stuck upside down 2 times.....
1:46 Why did I expect him to say:
"But first...
Let me take a selfie!"

MAVERICK HORESHOE ROLL 2013 STUCK????
Ive heard better things from gp than coasters getting stuck upside down. things like a train falling off the track on a stuttle coaster, like wtf
Lol the gp are very weird sometimes
3:28- Mumbo Jumbo was built in 2009?
My date’s definitely incorrect
In fact I'm the only enthusiast in my school
GP on Texas Sky Screamer- *Oh my God those swing things will fly off and I will fall into the lake* 👌🏼 🤦♂️
Sounds typical lol
808CoasterLife Typical considering I overheard someone in line for the new ABC Tourbilion saying “ *Those axles will snap in half oh my gosh I hear creaking I’m out* “
SFOT is my home park and the GP there are ridiculous.
X-Coaster got stuck because of a power outage, not a mechanical failure.
Yeah I guess the power outage is what caused the lift hill to get stuck
Can it happen?
Yes I know Demon at SFGAm got stuck upside down once
Is it common?
NO if it does happen it's always the result of mechanical failure
Very true
Maverick???
Technically that does count but the train was empty and no one was actually riding it.
Nice video
Thanks
One time the people in front of me at six flags magic mountain on full throttle they didn’t make the loop🙁
did they roll back to the launch track?
Make that count 5 you forgot walibi belgium sirocco
I am aware of that.
make a reaction to the video from my animation story upside dow for 3DAYS!!!!!
💀 same.
I don’t do reaction videos but, that video is something... XD
Realistically coasters cannot get stuck upside down because coasters are friction powered so need less to say unless a rock somehow got in the way and another rock locked the coaster in place somehow
Agreed!
EGF got stuck on a airtimehill because of a technical defect, the same thing can also happen upside down on other coasters. But as you said, its not likely.
Good point!
Maverick was stuck upside down too.
I saw someone get stuck upside down on a corkscrew
Do you know the name of that ride?
I hurt my knee on a roller coaster so I don’t think they are safe
What roller coaster did you hurt your knee on and how did you hurt your knee?
808CoasterLife Invadr at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, my knee went up and it hit the lap bar
Yeah Boi54 Not all roller coasters are comfortable and I can think of a few that can hurt your head, shins, thighs, and give you headaches. But fatal accidents do not happen frequently.
808CoasterLife oh
Hopefully your knee is better and I hope other roller coasters don’t do the same thing to you.
I was there when the demon was upside down haha my cousin was on it and he got a ton of free stuff.
Lucky him!
